Excerpt and giveaway with author Jennifer Lane

Happy Sunday, peeps!  Please join me in welcoming Jennifer Lane, author of the Conduct series.

I'm excited to participate in the Sizzling Summer Author Extravaganza! Thanks for the invitation, Lisa.
Sophie Taylor and Grant Madsen, the heroes of The Conduct Series, invite you to enter a giveaway for an ebook from their romantic suspense stories. Comment on this post and enter to win With Good Behavior (Conduct Series #1) or Bad Behavior (Conduct Series #2).

Here's an excerpt from the first chapter of Conduct Series #3, On Best Behavior.
"You're not like my mother, either," Grant said. "You actually have a backbone."Sophie cocked one eyebrow. "Don't you forget it."He laughed.Turning back to the door, she gave a rueful sigh. "I guess it's good you realize in advance what kind of woman you're getting, you know, with this whole 'til death do us part thing."Crystal-blue eyes floated down her spine. "I sure do. It's a beautiful backbone, by the way."His silky voice unnerved her, as usual, and she rapped on the door to distract herself. She didn't think their inevitable PDA would be appropriate in the church hallway.Opening the door was a man in his early fifties with thinning sandy hair and intelligent brown eyes that crinkled at the corners when he identified his guests. He stuck out his hand. "Sophie."She returned his warm smile during the handshake. "Pastor Tom. Thanks for meeting with us. This is Grant Madsen, my fiancé."Tom Kelley shook Grant's hand too, looking up a bit to meet the taller man's eyes. He led them inside his office and gestured to two chairs. Sitting across from them behind his desk, Tom noticed a soft blush on Sophie's high cheekbones, then took in her classy outfit beneath her long camel-colored coat. "You're looking good, Sophie.""Thank you." She gave an awkward smile, and Grant noticed she seemed especially tense.Tom leaned forward a bit. "How's life been treating you since I last saw you?""Alright." She shrugged, adding a nervous chuckle as her hands splayed open, palms up. "No, uh, no handcuffs this time."Her forced attempt at humor made Tom frown with sympathy. Confused, Grant lightly grasped one of her roving hands in his. "Handcuffs?"She eventually met his questioning gaze. "The last time I saw Pastor Tom was my mother's funeral."Grant was beginning to understand her earlier hesitation was about more than cold feet. "You…were cuffed at her funeral?""Two CO's brought me from Downer's Grove." She despised the tremor in her voice. "They said I was lucky the warden let me attend."Grant couldn't think of anything more humiliating. Squeezing her hand, his voice was soft. "I'm sorry you had to go through that.""I'm sorry too," Tom interjected, sadness in his eyes. "You didn't get to properly mourn Laura's death. And you looked so cold, standing there in the rain.""I felt nothing." Sophie swallowed, looking up and putting on a brave face. "Anyway, I'm happy to report that's behind us now. We're here to talk about moving forward."Though Grant still looked concerned, Tom decided to play along. "Then I'm glad it's all in the past." His eyes shifted over to Grant. "Sophie's father told me you two met on your parole officer's doorstep?"Grant winced. "Yes, sir—not your most typical hookup spot. Sophie's dad isn't exactly my biggest fan.""Aw, he's slowly coming along," Sophie countered.Tom hid a smile. "Well, if you can win him over, you can win over anybody.""Ain't that the truth," Sophie muttered.

Guest post with author Robin DeJarnett

Hey, everyone! Please join me in welcoming a good friend and fabulous author, Robin DeJarnett.

Help Stop a Killer
No, this isn't America's Most Wanted – this culprit isn't a mysterious stranger. This killer is much worse, and goes by the name Cancer. And it has to be stopped. This summer, I've joined Lisa in contributing to Omnific Publishing's Summer Lovin' Anthologies. The publisher and all the authors are donating the proceeds from these books to Save the Ta-tas, a charity raising money to fight cancer, but you can find out more about that below. What I'd like to do today is dedicate my contribution, a short story called Concessions, to my cousin, Susanna, a Cancer survivor.
She Saw It Coming
Cancer is no stranger, attacking both women and men I know and love in its many forms, but Susanna knew early on Cancer was tracking her. It'd already targeted her family. Cancer, specifically Breast Cancer, came after her aunt, who fought the disease and won. Cancer didn't stop there, silently stalking Susanna's mom. In 2004, Susanna's mom lost her fight, and Cancer stole from us a woman with a heart of gold, whose life work was helping children as a school psychologist.
Knowing she was next on Cancer's list, Susanna got regular checkups. She and her husband share a full and healthy life, but Cancer found her in her early thirties, a year after she gave birth to a beautiful baby. It was in the prime of life, as Susanna breastfed her baby, that the disease reared its head again.
A Happy Ending, With Your Help
Susanna battledYou see, Susanna has a daughter. She's three.
We need to stop Cancer now, before it takes another mother or attacks another daughter or aunt or sister. Whether you decide to purchase one or both of the Anthologies, or would rather give directly to a specific organization, please take a minute and open your wallet. With your help, we can put Cancer away for good.
Thank you to Susanna and her husband for allowing me to tell a little of their story. A fun way to join the fight is to pick up the Summer Lovin' Anthologies. Available in two volumes, Summer Breeze (sweet romance) and Heat Wave (fiery love), you can sample some great writing and kick Cancer where it hurts, all at the same time. Lisa and I are both a part of the Heat Wave edition, so grab a tall cool one and buckle your seatbelts – and help us stop Cancer in its tracks.

Guest Post and giveaway with author Kristin Miller

I'm very excited to have my friend and talented author, Kristin Miller here today!

Kristin is president of the San Francisco RWA chapter and just got back from National. Lucky girl!

Take it away, Kristin!

What I learned from my week at 2011's RWA National Conference
The RWA National Conference was held in New York City this year. Even though I'd been to two other conferences--one in Washington D.C. and the other in Orlando, Florida--I was thrilled to have the opportunity to be amongst the best in the business once again.
I learned a ton.
Surprisingly, most of what I learned didn't come from sitting in on workshops. I could probably write a gazillion blog posts on what happened, who I met, where I went, etc, etc, but what I learned from the experience could easily be summed up in three points:
1- If you introduce yourself to everyone who crosses your path and kill them with kindness, fate will smile upon you. You never know when you'll be standing in front of the president of the major publishing house you're selling your book to. (It happened to me, it could happen to you!)
2-Success isn't measured by the amount of pitches you schedule (0), the number of workshops you attend (1), or the pages of notes you took sitting in the publishing houses' spotlights (2). Success is weaving your way through the mine fields of the conference with grace and confidence, learning as much as you can, from whomever you can. Success is sitting next to your favorite author at the keynote luncheon and not wetting yourself. Success is walking around the lobby with a smile on your face, being so open and willing to talk, that agents and editors start conversations with you instead of the other way around. Success is a warm, fuzzy feeling in your heart that tells you the smallest victories--like having more people recognize you by face than ever before--are often times the greatest victories.
3-Writing friends are the best ones to have. Hands down. They understand how absolutely insane writers actually are. We sit in front of our computers, day after day, night after night, talking to characters in our heads. We get excited about newly discovered plot points and itch to get our fingers back on the keyboard when away too long. No one understands that world like another writer. Cultivate those relationships by sharing conference experiences. Exchange cards. Dine together. Laugh until your sides hurt. Those friendships are worth their weight in gold…or wine and chocolate. (Thank you, Lisa, for being one of those friends and having me on your site today!)
If you've a romance writer who's never had the opportunity to attend an RWA National Conference, I highly suggest you do. You'll walk away learning more about yourself than the writing business. And it's a glorious thing.
Kristin Miller is Betty Homemaker by day and a dark and gritty paranormal romance writer by night. The first novel in her Vampires of Crimson Bay Series, Intervamption, releases from Avon Impulse July 26th:

Slade, a fallen assassin, has been given a second chance. Called back into action by his boss for an unknown task, Slade must become what he hates most: a vampire. When he awakens in a rehabilitation center for "newborn" vampires, an instant attraction ignites between him and his sexy vampire teacher, Dylan, who's been assigned to show him the ropes. Dylan's orderly life blew up recently, when a rogue vampire killed himself right before her eyes. Forced to question everything they've known, Dylan and Slade have no choice but to trust in each other, while mayhem ensues around them.

Guest post from author Susan Kaye Quinn

I'm so very pleased and excited to welcome author Susan Kaye Quinn to my blog today. Susan is the author of one of my favorite YA romances, Life, Liberty, and Pursuit.

Long Distance Romance

When I set out to write Life, Liberty, and Pursuit, I knew I would have to research the ins and outs of boot camp for sailors and the program requirements for being a Linguist in the Navy, but I thought I understood the long distance romance part.

After all, I had a long distance boyfriend and lived apart from my husband for 9 months while doing my Ph.D. research.

When I dived deep into the story, I realized how wrong I was. Military families not only face the stress of separation, but both the service personnel and the families have to worry about each other in their absence. Facing ongoing danger as well as separation is part of life for military families, especially active duty personnel serving our country. We owe thanks not only the men and women in our armed services, but to the families they leave behind – often for months or years at a time.

Life, Liberty, and Pursuit
takes a look at the hard choices a young couple has to face in following their dreams, but in the end it's an uplifting story about how love is stronger than anything, even distance and time.

This last weekend we celebrated the birth of the U.S. as a free country. Since that freedom comes directly from the sacrifices made by our military families, I want to give away a copy of Life, Liberty, and Pursuit plus a $25 Barnes&Noble Gift card, but here's the catch: the winner has to be part of a military family, with a loved one in the military (active duty or retired). So please tweet, FB, and share this with everyone you know, so we can reach as many military families as possible.

To say "THANK YOU!" for all you have sacrificed. And to give a little something back.

To celebrate the Summer Breeze Anthology, which has a new "after" story with characters from Life, Liberty, and Pursuit, I'm giving away special bookmarks to anyone who purchases an e-book or print copy. All proceeds go to Save the TaTas breast cancer research! Check out the details here.

Author bio: (taken from Goodreads)

Susan Kaye Quinn grew up in California, where she wrote snippets of stories and passed them to her friends during class. Her teachers pretended not to notice and only confiscated her stories a couple times.

Susan left writing behind to pursue a bunch of engineering degrees, but she was drawn back to writing by an irresistible urge to share her stories with her niece, her kids, and all the wonderful friends she's met along the way.

She doesn't have to sneak her notes anymore, which is too bad.

Susan writes from the Chicago suburbs with her three boys, two cats, and one husband. Which, it turns out, is exactly as a much as she can handle.

You can find Susan Kaye Quinn on Facebook, Twitter, and her Ink Spells blog. The Life, Liberty, and Pursuit website contains fun stuff about boot camp, love letters, and ways to support our military personnel. Life, Liberty, and Pursuit is available for purchase at Omnific Publishing, Amazon.com, and BarnesandNoble.com.

Guest post & giveaway with author Corrina Lawson

Hey, everyone! Please join me in welcoming author Corrina Lawson to my blog today!

The Romance Guide To Superheroes
Superheroes aren't thought of as a romance heavy genre. It's true they rely a great deal on action and over-the-top plotting but, as in any good story, relationships play a huge role.
That includes romantic relationships as well. And superheroes make wonderful romance novel heroes and heroines.
The superhero relationship that is so famous it's practically one word: Lois & Clark. Their romantic entanglement has been at the heart of the Superman story for decades. Sometimes it's done poorly, as in many Silver Age stories about Lois scheming to expose Superman's secret identity or in Superman Returns, which the actress cast as Lois neither captured her intelligence or her understanding of Superman. (To give the writer's credit, they didn't get Superman at all either. Superman as a deadbeat dad just does not work.)
Sometimes it's done wonderfully, as in the 1980s comics when Lois and Clark finally tied the knot and many stories since. The marriage was inspired by television's Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman in which the characters also finally were married but the comic book relationship has lasted far longer. And, in the final episode of Smallville, Lois and Clark again were married.
And, of course, there's the wonderful "aww..." moment in the very first Superman movie when Lois falls from a helicopter and Superman catches her in mid-air and says "I've got you," and Lois says "You've got me? Who's got you?"
That's probably my favorite scene from the whole movie and one I played homage to when I wrote Phoenix Rising, my superhero story due out from Samhain Publishing in November.  LINK: http://corrinalawson.wordpress.com/ta...
You don't have to go back to DVDs, however, to find some fun superhero romance to inspire your writing. Recent movies have also included some wonderful romantic relationships.
In Thor, when Jane Foster is entranced by the Thunder God walking around without his shirt, well, who can hardly blame her? The movie hits a lot of the usual romance points, even with a "meet cute" as Jane runs over Thor (he's fine), to her believing in Thor despite all logic to the contrary, and to then Thor's realization that Jane, though human, is more worthy than some Asgardians.
In fact, two women are prominent in Thor, setting up a fun romantic triangle for sequels. There's Jane and Thor's comrade in arms, the kick-ass Lady Sif. The cliffhanger ending of Thor is full of romance angst as Thor and Jane are separated, at least until the next movie. It's also a movie full of fascinating relationships between all the supporting characters that romance readers will love, particularly Thor and his foster-brother, Loki. Lesson: supporting characters can add tremendous depth to a story.
Another relationship, between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, is at the core of both Iron Man movies. Pepper is Tony's touchstone, the one person who understands him. But, of course, he won't allow her to get too close, until it's brought home to him that he can lose her.
When Pepper reaches into the recesses of Tony's artificial heart to help repair it in the first Iron Man, it's an unusual scene but incredibly romantic and definitely another "aww.." moment.
I have high hopes for some similar "aww..." moments in the upcoming Captain America, and not just because I have a crush on the Star-Spangled Avenger. Hey, what's not to like? Steve Rogers is powerful, he's intelligent, he's determined, and he's blond and in incredibly good shape. He's also probably the most decent and honorable hero in all of superhero comics. Without his powers, Steve would still be awesome.
From what I can tell from movie's trailers, the relationship between Steve and spy Peggy Carter seems to be front and center. Cap's best partners have always been powerful and smart woman like Peggy. No wallflowers or woman who sit an wait on the home front for Cap. He's always been paired with woman who fight at his side.
Unfortunately, I should warn everyone that Peggy and Steve's relationship will not last. In the comics, Cap is supposedly killed in an explosion of a rocket. He's really frozen in ice for many years until modern superheroes find his body and thaw him out. When he wakes up, Peggy has already lived her life. Given the hints in all the other Marvel heroes movies, I suspect this is going to happen on film as well.
The current comic book Steve Rogers, however, has a long-running and currently steady relationship with SHIELD Agent Sharon Carter aka Agent 13. The pair have their difficulties, which include Steve being dead for a while and Sharon being mind-controlled to kill him, but they got past all that and you can find them in the pages of Secret Avengers. (For those interested in a wonderful and human superhero story, I cannot recommend Ed Brubaker's run on Captain America highly enough.)
I can't say there's much of a romance in X-Men: First Class but those of you who write or read male/male romance may find much of interest in the Magneto/Charles Xavier relationship. It's all subtext but in the comics the subtext is so heavy that I sometimes want to tell the pair to get a room. And it's their friendship that drives the movie.
In a world where psychics, vampires, shapeshifters, ancient Atlantean warriors, and witches abound, I think it's time there are some stories that focus on superheroes.
Resolute and heroic men and women with incredible powers that lend themselves to some very interesting ideas for sex scenes. I made good use of telekinesis in Phoenix Rising and I'm writing a short story now in which the heroine is invisible, which gave a new twist to writing the sex scene.
Phoenix Rising is hopefully the first in a series of people who are not only gifted with powers but also heroes in the truest sense of the word. To me, that's the largest appeal of superheroes. Not the battles or the costumes or the fun villans.
Or, as the tagline to Phoenix Rising states, "He was trained to be a weapon. She taught him to be a hero."
Now if only Marvel or DC would call and ask me to write Batman or X-Men.

Guest post and giveaway with author Daisy Harris

Hey everyone! Please join me today in welcoming author Daisy Harris to my blog. Take it away, Daisy!

Sexy Undead
Firstly- thanks Lisa for having me on the blog! And now, without further ado…deep thoughts with Daisy.

It is a truth universally recognized that things that disgust us also get us hot. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before brave authors began writing zombie love stories. Zombies terrify us! They're contagious, soulless, a-moral things- and we love watching them pick off heroes one by one.
But what of the experience of being a zombie? 28 Weeks Later explored this question. So did Star Trek Voyager when Seven of Nine left the Borg. The Borg hinted at zombie-ism, thought their hive mind behaved more like a network of frankensteins. Still, they prompted questions…questions I've thought a lot about in writing my upcoming release, Lust After Death.

For example- what is the difference between a zombie and a Frankenstein?
In frankenstein and zombies stories alike, themes arise of self-determinacy, expectation, mind control, and objectification. Yet only in frankenstein stories can we relate to the monster's point of view. Don't get me wrong- I love zombies! However, zombies display a smaller range of emotions. Zombies epitomize our fears of contagion, disease, and mental illness. One cannot relate to a zombie- and therein lies their horror.

Frankenstein-type creatures are another matter. In Mary Shelly's story, the scientist was the true villain. Time and again, we catch a glimpse of the monster's soul. In every movie in which humans re-animate a frankenstein-type corpse- whether comedy, horror, or tragedy- we see that glimmer, that humanity. (And in Weird Science, the manufactured woman was smarter than her makers.) "Steins" feel, love, hope. It's society that evil, it's mankind that objectifies. When man creates monsters in his image, we as readers relate to the monster.

In Lust After Death, I wrote a stein love story. It's a marriage of convenience tale involving a re-animated bride and a zombie freedom-fighter. My heroine Josie combines Kelly LeBrock, Seven of Nine, Sasha from the first Psy-Changeling book, and Summer Glau. And my hero Bane? He's part terminator, part GI Joe, and all man! After all, don't re-animated corpses have the right to be free? A chance at love and hot smexin'?

I think so! Support stein rights and buy Lust After Death. Releasing July 8th from Ellora's Cave.
You can purchase Lust After Death at Ellora's Cave, here.
A little bit about Daisy:
Birkenstock-wearing glamour girl and mother of two by immaculate conception, Daisy Harris still isn't sure if she writes erotica. Her paranormal romances start out innocently enough. However, her characters behave like complete sluts. Much to Miss Harris's dismay, the sex tends to get completely out of hand.
She writes about trampy mermaids, sexy dragons, and snuff-y shark-shifters. Her work also features zombie ingenues, horny gods, and some holiday characters like you've never seen them before. And there's almost always a mad scientist in there somewhere.

If you like science-y subplots, fantastical creatures, and red-hot chemistry, you'll love Daisy Harris. You can find her on Twitter, Facebook and at www.thedaisyharris.com/.

Oh, and comment below to win a FREE copy of Lust After Death! You may have to wait a few days, as I don't have the

Meet an author Monday

Happy Monday, peeps!

Here we are, the last author blog hop at Cali Cheer Mom (don't forget I'm moving to my author blog beginning July 1st.)

Before we get to the hop, I'd like to remind you all of a very special project I'm participating in. I'm very proud to be a part of Omnific Publishing's Summer Lovin' Anthology. There are two anthologies releasing on July 5th: Summer Breeze and Heat Wave . If you click on the titles, you'll be directed to Omnific's website where you can see a small blurb for each of the books, as well as the participating authors. All proceeds from these two works will be going directly to Save The Ta-Tas foundation in support of breast cancer research.

If you've read any of my work you know I lean toward the shmexy side (rawr!) so you'll find my story, Starstruck in the Heat Wave anthology. I wrote this story a few years ago as a small break in between projects (EOS and Pleasures Untold.) It's sexy, silly and a lot of fun, and I hope readers enjoy it as much as I do.

Here's the blurb for the story:

Forced off the freeway with a blown tire, Amberly's day was off to a bad start. Tired of her boring, predictable life, all she wants is to get through her day and put the blind date she's been roped into for later that evening behind her.  What she didn't account for was the tall, dark, sex-on-a-stick Good Samaritan who came to her rescue, or the cosmic explosion that would forever bind them together.
Tired of dating money-grubbing, plasticized garden tools, Tristan wants a girl who will love him for who he is and not his millions. What he doesn't want is to waste another evening making nice with a blind date he's not interested in. He never expects to find the woman of his dreams standing alongside a cornfield with a blown tire, or to end up chasing a fallen star that gives them both strange, supernatural powers.
Fiercely attracted to one another, Amberly and Tristan find they can keep their newly acquired superpowers in check as long as they're together.
