The Timeline of Computable Knowledge

Not all data (or knowledge) is inherently computable. But as humanity has marched on, we have invented ways to capture knowledge as data that can be searched, compared, analyzed, crunched, cubed, and everything in between. In fact, one could say that over the past few years we have moved from just an “information age” to a “compute age.”

Wolfram Alpha has published a timeline of humanity’s progress towards this “compute age.” This interactive application is a really cool way to appreciate how,...

College-Level Writing Courses…For Free

If nothing else, the Web has enabled us to learn from great professors without having to actually attend the colleges at which they taught (or where they appeared). MIT has had the OpenUniversity project going for quite sometime but they aren’t the only game in town.YouTube EDU, a massive collection of free educational videos from Harvard, Yale, MIT, University of California and other great universities.

Regardless of who is publishing, teachers and students are gaining access to a growing rep...

Bye Bye Dropbox?

It’s not just Dropbox that may go bye-bye, it’s all of the cloud storage providers. Well, at least if ownCloud has anything to say about it!

OwnCloud is an open-source alternative for enterprise cloud services. Instead of pushing files and calendar outside the corporate firewall, companies can deploy ownCloud within their infrastructure, keeping everything secured without giving up the flexibility of cloud-based resources. Have a VPN connection? Establish it and start browsing your company’s i...

Defining the “Mobile” In Your Video Strategy

This was originally published on the Limelight Blog as part of my role as Sr. Director, Solutions Marketing for Digital Media (and acting Streaming Product Manager).

Perhaps you are only just incorporating video delivery into your online presence. Perhaps you are an old-hand with a business built on delivering video. Regardless, video is increasingly becoming a way to interact with and create more meaningful online experiences around content. And as Cisco’s five-year forecast projected, mobile...

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers

I hate numbers. I’m a product guy. I love business, don’t get me wrong, but numbers drive me nuts. It seems like mental masturbation to go through permutation after permutation of financial analysis and projection when successful businesses come down to one simple thing: adoption. Whether it’s by customer or by user, if a business can get their product adopted, number crunching becomes based on actual digits and not imaginary numbers.

When Advertising Pays Off…for Consumers

There is no doubt that advertising, in its truest sense of pushing a marketing message/image at us, does nothing for the consumer. They don’t get anything from it.

But with the growing consumption of online games, there seems to be a natural fit with showing advertisements and providing the user with something in return. This is especially relevant for MMOs in which people play to achieve something.

The obvious play? Pay users with in-game currency for their eyeballs on the ads. One such compan...

Infographic: State of Mobile Malware

A rather disturbing infographic on mobile malware. The worst? Nefarious applications with bogus reviews to make them seem legit.

When ET Attack!

Okay, the title is a little flamboyant but it seems that there has been a greater concern over the possibility of alien encounter. Perhaps this is simply indicative of current trends in popular culture (or the reverse) but regardless, the fear stems from the information that we send out:

To bolster humanity’s chances of survival, the researchers call for caution in sending signals intospace, and in particular warn against broadcasting information about our biological make-up, which could be us...

Visualizing the Impact of the Internet

A new, great interactive infographic on the Internet:

http://www.onlineschools.org/state-of-the-internet/soti.html

As I’ve written about before, there will be a greater need or visualization in the coming years as the pool of data continues to grow and things get connected at an even more frenetic pace.
