Just Discovered I Have a Copy of THIEVES GET RICH, SAINTS GET SHOT for a Giveaway!

Ashamed to say I completely forgot that I acquired an extra advance reader's copy of Jodi Compton's upcoming novel, THIEVES GET RICH, SAINTS GET SHOT from my agent just for this purpose - to do a giveaway.  Until, well, I cleaned house yesterday. And there it was.

I've also just realized that Jodi put a lovely note at the end of her recent entry at Crown's Read It Forward mentioning me:

"I am taking my cue in this endeavor (getting onto Facebook, etc), from my gifted stablemate at Crown...

Maybe You Won't Find This as Funny as I Did

My friend Quinn ended up adopting a rabbit she didn't want (it showed up on her doorstep - don't laugh - I had a dog follow me home once and refuse to leave). Recently, said rabbit (who has been dubbed Dr. Bunstein) was nowhere to be found, and her significant other, Consort (no, that isn't really his name) went in search:

He called for the rabbit in all of his favorite places, then in the obscure places, finally looking in the far dusty corner of the yard. There was Dr. B, lying on his...

Just About the Strangest & Creepiest Thing I Have Ever Seen in Microsoft's Word Program

I'm typing along in my current manuscript, tweaking away. I decide to add the word Spike (don't ask), and when my fingers get to the K in Spike, an odd  little box appears with some fragments of words, and the instructions (PRESS ENTER TO INSERT). Hey, I can't resist (there is a reason the main character in my  novel does the things she does), so I press enter. Here is what gets inserted in my manuscript:

YELLOW MEDICINE, HOGDOGGIN', AS King

AS King

LEARNING TO SWIM THE USUAL SUSPECTS you ...

Yes, I Just Got This from a Complete Stranger

Does this approach actually work? (Don't answer that.) I mean, I can appreciate some of the sentiments expressed here and maybe this fellow is a lovely person, but can't imagine this is a particularly good way to strike up a, well, whatever is trying to be struck up here. Yes, I changed the name. No, I have no idea who this person is. No, I did not respond.

Hi Dear... What a beautiful day...Am [john doe] born in Arizona Mesa but grew in australia but presently now in scotland ..seeking for...

Come See Me in Lake Placid - July 2

I'm doing a book store event in Lake Placid, New York - where Learning to Swim opens, and where Book 2 takes place. It's a gorgeous area - come up for a visit. Bookstore Plus, 2491 Main St., Lake Placid, Saturday, July 2, from 3 to 5 pm.

That's me in Placid, working as a bike mechanic, with my pal Annie - who doesn't truly have any idea what to do with the pedal wrench she's holding.

I'd Like to Hire This Guy to Write My Flap Copy

Here's how David R. Slayton described my novel Learning to Swim in his recent review, "Into the Deep":

Troy Chance thinks she knows who she is. She's got a comfortable life, with all the right people at just the right distance. She's safe. When an impulsive act of good sends her diving off a moving ferry in search of what might be a child thrown overboard, her previous self is washed away.

One of Many Reasons to Avoid Goodreads

Readers, knock yourselves out. There are free books to be had at Goodreads. But for authors, it's best to stay away. And here's why (from Lauren DeStefano - and thanks to Lisa for pointing this out):

... One of my favorite lines is "gets in our heads like a morbidly obese bumblebee with a venomous stinger."

To close, I'll quote one of the few Goodreads reviews I've read about my novel: "I assumed this book would be amateurish because I got it in a giveaway on Goodreads." After that, yep, ...

A Somewhat Profane Look at an Ongoing Issue

It's an ongoing issue for bookstores - folks who meander in to "shop" for books, but are actually simply using the bookstore and its personnel to find books they're interested in, and then go home and order it online or scan the title into their smart phone to find out where they can buy it the cheapest.

"They type titles into their iPhones and go home. We know what they're doing, and it has tested my patience." - from "Book Store Owners Are Onto You, Cheapskates" (Although this quote is...
