I Couldn't Have Said It Better Myself

The Three Musketeers: Sandy, Sara, Cynthia
From my friend Cynthia's blog:
And speaking of magic, the people who run the Squaw Valley Community of Writers manage to create magic year after year. Four years after attending the conference, my friends and I found each other in our rented condo. Happy to be together, we laughed and screamed and hugged. We'd come from as far as Vermont and Hawaii to meet up once again. We've reunited a few times before and it's always great, like...

Why I Won't Be Posting for a Few Days
I'd planned to do a nice little round-up with photos of my lovely trip to Squaw Valley and visit with friends in Danville and my sublime week in New York City, but last night my computer crashed abruptly. And I learned that when one file in the operating system is corrupted or lost, you can't access anything in your hard drive, as in nada, nothing, which makes no sense to me. And I also learned that Dell warranties no longer offer "software support," which would make sense if you're talking s...

Ah, the Messages You Get on Facebook ...
I am very new to internet dating cos i dont believe in it and i am very busy with lots of time flying hence have less time for frivolities, however with a success story of a close associate form this website who got married not quite long, i decided to try it out and see what it holds for me. I quite like your profile and admire your personality that's why i contacted you.I am quiet, caring and a gentle person, I love life and the opportunities it throws at you. I am very honest and...

Amazon, This You're Doing Right
You can debate the pros and cons of Amazon until you're blue in the face, but, well, it's here to stay. (And, oh, have they promoted my book through email blasts, all for free, so for that I'm grateful.) But one thing that has always irked me is its review system, where anyone can post pseudonymous "reviews"- one of mine said "It wasn't unpleasant, but nothing really happened" - and give a book one- or two-star reviews because it took too long to arrive ... or give away major plot points.

An Interview with Jodi Compton - and a Huge Giveaway: Signed, Personalized Books & More
Jodi Compton's newest novel -
Thieves Get Rich, Saints Get Shot
- came out this month, and since I love both this book and its predecessor,
Hailey's War
, of course I wanted to host her on my blog. But I've been slammed with work lately, so Jodi kindly wrote her own Q&A, supplying not just the answers, but the questions as well.

The House Where Troy Chance Lives
Yes, this is it: the house in Lake Placid, New York, on Main Street, across from Mr. Mike's Pizza, where Troy, the main character in my novels, lives. Okay, it's actually the house where I used to live with a batch of roommates, and it's the house I based Troy's on - but I gave her a private bathroom I never had. And the entire place has been massively fixed up and renovated from when we lived in it, believe you me. It's now The Guide House, owned by my friends Karen and Brian Delaney, who ow...

Here's How to Stay Cool in Vermont
Dig a hole in your yard. A very big hole, and get in it.
In case you're wondering, this is not a small dog. So it is a very large hole.

If You're Submitting a Manuscript Anywhere, for Anything, Please Read This ...
Here's the first instruction: Read the directions. Really. If you're submitting to a contest or to an agent or taking a manuscript to a writers conference, do what the guidelines or rules say. Barring any contraindications from the instructions, here are some basics:
Use Times New Roman 12 point. Not 14. Not some other odd font that will annoy the crap out of the person trying to read it. Yes, we all have font preferences. I'm partial to Goudy Old Style, or Tahoma or Arial when I'm in a...
