The Less Gun Availability

Having enjoyed my 82nd birthday, I am part of a group of about 50 million Americans who are 65 years of age or older. Those who are 90 or older were in school during the 1930s. My age cohort was in school during the 1940s. Baby boomers approaching their 70s were in school during the 1950s and early ’60s.

Try this question to any one of those 50 million Americans who are 65 or older: Do you recall any discussions about the need to hire armed guards to protect students and teachers against scho...

Earth’s Crust in Turmoil

What is causing our planet to shake so violently all of a sudden?  Rivers of lava have been pouring out of the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii for weeks, a massive eruption of Mount Merapi just a few days ago shot volcanic ash 38,000 feet into the air, and now rivers of lava are pouring out of Guatemala’s Fuego Volcano.  Overall, Volcano Discovery is reporting that a total of 34 volcanoes around the world are erupting right now.  So what is causing so much seismic activity all of a sudden, and is t...

The Tyranny of Institutional Licensing

Driving south on I-5 into Seattle, the Cascadia Subduction Zone came to mind, especially when the highway dipped into a gloomy tunnel beneath Seattle’s relatively new skyscraper district. This fault line runs along the Pacific coast from north of Vancouver down into California. The western “plates” move implacably east and downward under the North American plate, building up massive tectonic forces that can produce some of the most violent megathrust earthquakes on the planet.

The zone also a...

Science or Science Fiction?

This is an oldie, but goodie, but worth revisiting in the context of today’s false belief that there is a 97% consensus. It would be interesting to see the exact same study done again today.

It seems that, inconveniently,  a scientific consensus exists concerning global warming after all – but it isn’t the one you think.

In this 2012 peer-reviewed study published not long after Cook’s ridiculous 97% claim, only 36 percent of geoscientists and engineers believe that humans are creating a globa...

‘Everyday Saints’

Russian literature has a long history of dealing with Church themes. Pushkin, Leskov and Chekhov come to mind at once. However, these themes are also central in Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy and more recently in Pasternak and Soloukhin, and in fact they are present in all Russian literature, as an underpinning and uniting background of spiritual and cultural values.

What is original about this book is that the author is not just a very talented writer with a sensitive artist’s heart, but he is also...

Roseanne and the Racism-Industrial-Complex

Roseanne, one of the most popular series of all time and the most highly rated show at the present moment, has been unceremoniously cancelled by ABC because of a single tweet—a “racist” tweet, according to everyone in Big Media, including and tellingly Big Conservative media—fired off by its leading lady.

Roseanne Barr tweeted on Tuesday that Valerie Jarrett, senior adviser to Barack Obama, looked like the offspring of the Muslim Brotherhood and The Planet of the Apes.

Jarrett, as it turns o...

If We Want Your Money

We live in a Deliverance nation. If the government wants your money, they’ll take your money – simple as that.

Rustem Kazazi, 64, was recently relieved of his life savings – $58,100 – by the US Customs and Border Protection “service.” The money was found in his possession – and that was enough to take it from him, without so much as a traffic violation alleged.

Kazazi was traveling by air to his native Albania and – stupidly, but not illegally – brought the cash with him to the airport, inten...

Why Expose Children to Violence and Marxism?

The February mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida prompted many parents to consider homeschooling. This is hardly surprising, as the misnamed federal “Gun-Free Schools” law leaves schoolchildren defenseless against mass shooters. Removing one’s children from government schools seems a rational response to school shootings.

School shootings are not the only form of violence causing more parents to consider homeschooling. Many potential homeschooling parents are concerned about t...

Burrito Index Update

Long-time readers may recall the Burrito Index, my real-world measure of inflation. The Burrito Index: Consumer Prices Have Soared 160% Since 2001 (August 1, 2016). The Burrito Index tracks the cost of a regular burrito since 2001. Since we keep detailed records of expenses (a necessity if you’re a self-employed free-lance writer), I can track the cost of a regular burrito at our favorite taco truck with great accuracy: the cost of a regular burrito has gone up from $2.50 in 2001 to $5 in 201...

Whiner Bill Clinton Claims He’s a Victim

Former President Bill Clinton insisted in a weekend interview that he doesn’t owe a personal apology to Monica Lewinsky, the former White House intern whose adult life has been defined by their inappropriate sexual affair and the global scrutiny that followed.

‘No,’ he told NBC in an interview airing Monday on the ‘Today’ show. ‘I do not – I have never talked to her. But I did say publicly on more than one occasion that I was sorry.’

‘I apologized to everybody in the world,’ Clinton said, imp...
