Egalitarian quotas will not destroy privilege in our universities
This article was published The Mail on Sunday on 6th November 2022
You can be privileged in Britain, but only if you have the brass neck to pretend that you arent. Increasingly, parents who in strain their budgets to the limit to pay private school fees are being punished for their thrift and responsibility. Their children are rejected for Oxbridge university places and jobs for which they are well-qualified. Applicants from state schools are preferred for political reasons, as if this...

PETER HITCHENS: Every time I set out on my bike I prepare for war. Its time for peace on the roads
This is Peter Hitchens Mail on Sunday column

My Roger Scruton Lecture, delivered at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford on Monday 24th October
Normally I do not write speeches. As this was a lecture, intended to last a full forty minutes, I thought I should write an actual text. The following is the script I prepared, though not exactly as delivered (especially the opening, which was a mess because I somehow lost the second and third pages and had to improvise) :
Before I begin, I must mention that the misleadingly philosophical title of this lecture - After Conservatism- was devised only so that it could fit on a rather smal...
