The Fascinating Story of What Happened to Scotland's Excellent Selective School System

I am keenly aware that the UK education disaster of 1965 played out very differently in Scotland. I am also aware that Northern Ireland's grammar schools were spared, though like other surviving grammars in England they were left to operate a comprehensive curriculum and allowed to take examinations designed for comprehensive schools, which gravely lowered all standards.  My new book also covers events in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Here, I discuss events in Scotland after1965:

An incre...

The Foolish Act of Spite That Wrecked a Fine School System

An incredible act of spite and folly has robbed this country of what was once one of the best school systems in the world. Nearly sixty years after this stupid mistake, our Education establishment still has not admitted it was wrong, and persists with it. These people are like a vain and foolish driver who took the wrong exit from the M25 on his way to Manchester, has now reached Warsaw and will soon arrive in Moscow, with a petulant expression on his face, rather than accept and undo his origin...

PETER HITCHENS: I warned there would be a price to pay over Covid. Now do you believe me?

This is Peter Hitchens' Mail on Sunday column

PRI217613452The coming years of heavy taxes, along with the inflation and rising mortgage rates we face, are not caused by some unstoppable force of nature. Nor is the wild rise in energy prices.

All these things are the direct result of government actions. They did not need to happen. I have warned against them all. And yet there is no political party, not even a minority group in Parliament, that has been remotely interested in such warnings. The whole Hous...

Why are British Conservatives so Hostile to France?

Why are British patriots so rude and dismissive about France? It has been fascinating to watch the sour, grudging reaction to one of the few sensible things done by any British government the deepening of co-operation with Paris, to slow down people-smuggling across the Channel.

It is in fact already working. Anglo-French joint efforts prevented more than 23,000 crossings in 2021 and have stopped over 30,000 this year. Not enough, you rightly say, but could it also be that we have not done ...

Some Analysis of the Ziegler Case, as discussed elsewhere on this blog

Who is supreme in our government? Is it Parliament, answerable to the people of this country? Or is it a grand new elite of lawyers and police chiefs, in the grip of a more or less religious belief in their own rightness?

This basic issue is now being fiercely tested. Global warming fanatics are amazingly free to obstruct the ordinary working of the country. They ceaselessly block roads and attack works of art, their faces fixed in expressions of smug piety.

Many of us have watched i...

PETER HITCHENS: Fed up with Just Stop Oil zealots? Blame Blair and his revolutionary court

This is Peter Hitchens' Mail on Sunday Column

Do you want to know why the Just Stop Oil fanatics manage to cause so much chaos?

It is because of New Labours Left-wing Supreme Court , which has made the police and the law so feeble when faced with green zealots blocking motorways and roads.

This grandiose tribunal, whose very existence has given liberal judges more power, should really be called the Blair Court. It has existed only since 2009. It decided in June last year that deliberately...
