In Broad Daylight — Never Dies

I spent four exhausting hours on Saturday shooting the narrative of In Broad Daylight for an independent production company who hopes to sell a four-part series to a network. Stay tuned.photo_1

Gone, baby, gone

Gone, baby, gone. After final approval of the jacket, “The Joy of Killing” goes into print today. Out of my hands and into the world. But still two months to publication date, so now we wait. And do what we can on social media to give it a boost, and try our best not to get obsessed about it. We like to think what others think of the book won’t matter, but of course it will. You write to be read. Maybe not loved, but at least read. One great review from Kirkus is a good start.
The cover is co...

Kirk’s Review of “The Joy of Killing”

I was very pleased to received a very favorable review for “The Joy of Killing” from the Kirkus Review. Kirkus is famous for either ignoring or blasting books. Here are my favorite lines:

MacLean’s writing is lyrical, ebbing and flowing like a deep riptide that conceals the danger beneath; there is something unsavory and even panic-inducing about being pulled inside his tale. .

Joy of Killing_FINALA dizzying and delirious meditation on desire, violence, guilt, and philosophical justification.

The Joy of Killing — Tattered Cover

The Joy of Killing – Tattered Cover Signing

This notice may seem a little premature, but we know how time flies: I will be signing my new novel, The Joy of Killing, at the Tattered Cover in Denver on July 30. I would love to have a great turnout.

The book so far has been described by various readers as a literary thriller, a psychological thriller, even a philosophical thriller (Publishers Weekly). Here are two blurbs from New York Times bestselling writers which give you an idea:

“Not since...

Trolling For Blurbs

Trolling for Blurbs

Every author of lesser stature than John Grisham or Anne Tyler seeks out “blurbs” for their jacket cover and publicity documents on a new book. Personally, I’ve never been sure blurbs were worth a whole lot. My first book “In Broad Daylight” got no blurbs whatsoever, yet won an Edgar and sold over a million copies. My second book, “Once Upon A Time,” got great blurbs from well-known authors yet never found real traction.

Yet, more than once I’ve found myself buying a book of...

Cuba Libre

I was going to shut up about Rubio and Cruz and Menendez railing over Obama’s move to open relationships with Cuba. But I have to make one point: The Cuban people are a good deal better off under the Castro regime than they were under the American-supported regime of Fulgencio Batista, whom Castro overthrew. Under the brutal, corrupt dictator, the people lived in abject and total poverty, with little education and non-existent health care. The island was a haven for wealthy Americans and gang...

The Joy of Killing

I received the galleys for my new novel The Joy of Killing yesterday. As with past books, it was an exciting yet some discomforting experience. You recognize the words on the pages, yet they seem strangely disconnected; they’re in different type than when first pronounced, and squared off on the edges. They don’t seem mine anymore, not totally. It’s like they have a different inflection.

I experienced that somewhat with non-fiction, but it’s even more intense with fiction, where the only groun...
