Awards Season 2018
Hey, all. It’s awards nomination season again!
As is tradition, I’d like to do a quick post highlighting what I have that is eligible for the various awards in sf/f. As always, I request that you nominate based on work, not author. If you are eligible to nominate, and truly think one of the works below is among the best you read this year, I’d love to have your vote.
Nominations for the Hugo Awards are now open. In order to nominate you need to have already been a Worldcon member (Helsinki, San Jose, or Dublin) as of December 31st, but members who join this year’s convention anytime may vote on the final ballot once it’s available.

Announcing the Oathbringer Reread + Updates
Adam here. In this week’s new Writing Excuses episode, Protagonists Who Aren’t Sympathetic, Brandon, Valynne, Dan, and Howard discuss protagonists who, per writer intent, do not engender audience sympathy.
Alice Arneson and Lyndsey Luther of Tor.com announced their new reread series for Oathbringer. This week they introduce themselves but next week they’ll launch into the actual reread.

The Way of Kings, Escape the Shattered Plains VR Experience
Virtual reality makes the viewer an active participant in the story, allowing them to step into the creator’s imagination and explore their world. You are fully immersed in the experience. And we can’t imagine a better world to enter than that of The Way of Kings. Arcturus has always been fans of the world that Brandon Sanderson created for the opening movement of the Stormlight Archive.
For those that are new to Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings is the first book in an epic series set in Roshar. A world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars are fought for them and won by them.
One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, a medical apprentice, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.
It is the scale of the Shattered Plains, the creatures that roam them and the power of stormlight that all combine to create an amazing opportunity for VR. We have only taken a few steps with this adaptation but are so excited for you to join us.
In this short form adaptation (written by Joshua Rubin, known for his work on Destiny,
Assassin’s Creed 2, and Telltale’s Game of Thrones), you will experience the world of Roshar through the eyes of Kaladin. You will walk on the Shattered Plains during a high storm, learn to harness the power of stormlight, battle the Parshendi and encounter some surprises along the way. Throughout the experience, Syl will be there to guide and assist you in understanding your new powers.

The Reckoners board game + Updates
Adam here. In this week’s new Writing Excuses episode, What Writers Get Wrong, with Aliette de Bodard, Dan, Mary, Aliette, and Howard discuss “What writers get wrong.” This year the third-week episodes will follow this theme and each of the episodes will feature an expert guest who will help us understand what writers get wrong about something in which they have expertise.
Aliette de Bodard will be co-hosting several of these week-three episodes, but this week her role is “subject matter expert.” She has several fields of expertise, and among the hats she expertly wears which writers often fail to correctly describe is a hat labeled “motherhood” (note: not an actual hat.)
Many of you may have already seen Brandon’s post yesterday regarding the board game based on his Reckoners books from Nauvoo Games, but if you haven’t, here is the game trailer which will begin its Kickstarter on February 13.
If you want a bit more detail about the game, you can watch the game overview with the design prototype.
There will be a special post tomorrow from Arcturus XR. The VR company that produced “Escape the Shattered Plains VR Experience” which is set to release next month, so keep your eyes open for that.

Kaladin Album + Update
Adam here. In this week’s new Writing Excuses episode, Hero, Protagonist, Main Character, Brandon, Mary, Dan, and Howard start the new season with a quick discussion exploring the differences between heroes, protagonists, and main characters. Beginning with addressing the question “wait, aren’t they all the same person?” Because that’s the elephant in the room. Or maybe it’s three elephants. Or two. Sometimes there’s no elephant, and if you look carefully you can see an elephant-shaped hole, which is probably more like a negative number of elephants.
I have some more exciting news regarding The Black Piper’s album: Kaladin. As of this week it is available from iTunes and Amazon mp3.
