Review of Changing Paths

I had a wonderful chat with Hana the Suburban Witch yesterday for her podcast, and today she has posted a wonderful review of Changing Paths (she was one of the advance readers and is quoted on the cover).

Changing Paths by Yvonne Aburrow is a down to earth and extremely practical book on the complexities and intricacies of switching belief systems. Yvonne’s words will leave you feeling deeply seen, especially if changing religions is something you have already encountered in your life....

Snowdrops

Snowdrops in our gardenSnowdrops in our garden (Hespeler, Ontario)

The brave snowdrops must’ve come up under the snow! We first spotted them on 14 March, as the snow started to melt.

It’s raining now so I think it’ll wash a fair amount of the snow away. But there’s a lot of snow still hanging around.

The temperature according to the weather app is 5°C.

World Book Day 2023

My recommendations for World Book Day. LGBTQ+ and/or BIPOC, Indigenous, Latine, AAPI subjects and authors. All of them are brilliant stories.

“Ghost Squad” by Claribel Ortega

Coco meets Stranger Things with a hint of Ghostbusters in this action-packed supernatural fantasy. For Lucely Luna, ghosts are more than just the family business. Shortly before Halloween, Lucely and her best friend, Syd, cast a spell that accidentally awakens malicious spirits, wreaking havoc throughout St. Augus...

Borrowed, 2023

Some years ago, I started the festival of Borrowed. It’s on February 28th or 29th, and is a reminder that the Earth is precious and ecosystems are fragile. It seems even more relevant in the face of the climate emergency.

The festival of Borrowed highlights the idea that we do not own the Earth or the trees, animals, birds, and waters — we only “borrow” them, and share them with all other life. They are entities in their own right, flows in nature.

For the festival of Borrowed, you’re ...

Nature notes 5

Nature notes, Sunday 26 February, -7°C.

Walked by Hespeler Millpond. The fresh layer of snow was not slippery. We saw four or five swans. There were some rabbit tracks across the snow that’s laid on the frozen surface of the millpond. There’s also a fallen tree that was felled by a beaver. The sky was blue, crisp, and clear.

View over Hespeler millpond. The river was dammed for the grist mill just downstream and the millpond is mostly about two feet deep, except for the original river chan...

Belief in gods?

“Most witches don’t believe in gods. They know that the gods exist, of course. They even deal with them occasionally. But they don’t believe in them. They know them too well. It would be like believing in the postman.” — Terry Pratchett,
Witches Abroad,
1991“I don't hold with paddlin' with the occult,

An interesting pair of quotes from Terry Pratchett. Check out the discussion on the second quote at @marget.inglis_witchcraft page on Instagram.

In the 1990s, many Pagans would say that we don’t believe, we know by experience. I think that is what is being said here.

I think Terry Pratchett’s attitude to deities and magic changed in his later books. In the Tiffany Aching series, magic comes a distant second to Headology (Granny Weatherwax’s word for psychology). In the earlier ...

Vintage nature notes 2015

Small beauties from Oxford in 2015.

23 March 2015

Morrissey and Ziggy snuggled on the bed this morning, washing each other. The flowers coming up in my garden (daffodils, crocuses, anemones, grape hyacinths). Warmer weather and sunshine. Blue flowers (chionodoxa or squill) growing under a hedge. Blackthorn blossom. Two robins on a gate. The birds singing. More light. Spring!

A corkscrew hazel tree, all twisty and curly wurly. A truly psychedelic umbrella in the bus ...
