June 18, 2014: Crowdfunding Focus: Luchador!

Luchador!

We at Steve Jackson Games love luchadors and dice. So, it should come as no surprise that we think Luchador! is kind of awesome. In addition to being a really cool-looking dice game, our very own Andreas Stein met the creators at the UK Game Expo and they were super nice. Go back this project; it's only got half a day left!

June 16, 2014: A Patently Classy Move From Tesla

Not content with building amazing electric cars, Elon Musk has now challenged his competitors to match his game . . . by throwing the Tesla patent portfolio open. As he put it on the Tesla Motors blog, "Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology."

He's doing this because he believes in electric vehicles, wants to see more of them, and is disappointed that the big carmakers haven't made a serious attempt to build really great electric cars. So he's making it easier for them . . . It's also worth noting that Tesla's know-how will have other important applications, including aircraft design.

One other thing that I haven't seen mentioned in any of the press coverage: he earns many, many style points for leading with an "All Your Base" reference.

June 15, 2014: Announcing Munchkin Smash Up

Munchkin Smash Up is coming!

Do you like  Munchkin ? Do you like  Smash Up , from AEG? Then chances are you'll like our joint venture,  Munchkin Smash Up ! This game will be developed by AEG with feedback from us, and it'll combine the best elements of both games to create something stupidly awesome.

Brian Engard

Andrew adds: I love Smash Up ! It's a cool new take on deck building and gives it a play style different from just "getting the most victory cards" or "knocking your opponent down to zero." I don't get to play it nearly as often as I'd like, unfortunately, but I'm looking forward to all the playtesting I'll HAVE to do to make sure that this new set is as wonderful as it ought to be. AEG has been a great partner on Munchkin Loot Letter and it's going to be a lot of fun working with them again.

June 14, 2014: Announcing a Munchkin Comic From BOOM! Studios

Munchkin comics to come from BOOM! Studios!

Admit it. You know you've always wondered what the story is behind the games of  Munchkin that you play. Okay, maybe you haven't. But you know what? You're going to find out anyway.

Last night at Origins we announced a deal with BOOM! Studios to produce a series of comic books based on  Munchkin ! They'll be monthly, with 4-issue story arcs; you'll be able to get it in print or digitally, through services like Comixology and iVerse; and the physical comics will come with bonus  Munchkin cards!

Brian Engard

Note from Phil: This is one I've been wanting for years now. I've got emails from 2008 and 2009 pushing for a Munchkin comic book (and Steve's been talking about the possibility of  Munchkin comics since the game was released in 2001), and I'm excited that BOOM! Studios has stepped up and is running with the ball. The best part of the comic books – besides seeing what sort of wacky stories the creative teams craft around Spyke, Flower, and all of the Munchkin characters – is that Munchkin fans will get to watch as the world of the game expands well outside of its gameland incarnation. I'd go into "brand extension" and "lifestyle" and other buzzywordy jargon, but for now I'll just sit back and smile and wait to see what's next for Munchkin .

June 13, 2014: Announcing Munchkin Toys From Funko

Funko to make Munchkin toys!

Our indefatigable COO, Phil Reed, loves toys. They're like an addiction to him. So it should come as no surprise that, when the opportunity arrived to create Munchkin toys with Funko, he jumped at the chance! Funko will be producing a whole line of toys, each with a bonus  Munchkin card, and first up is a toy of Spyke, our Munchkin mascot!

Brian Engard

Note from Phil: For anyone who follows my outside hobby at battlegrip.com , it should come as no surprise that when Funko contacted us to talk about Munchkin toys I couldn't say "YES!" fast enough. Funko makes a remarkable number of incredible toys, from their adorable Pop! Vinyl series to the retro-style ReAction line, and the opportunity to work with the Funko team on the creation of Munchkin toys is an experience I'll treasure forever. I cannot thank Steve, Andrew, and the entire SJ Games staff enough for encouraging and supporting this project, and I am sure that Munchkin fans everywhere will want Spyke, Flower, and even monsters once the toys complete production and start reaching stores.

Warehouse 23 News: Adventure And Glory Await You On The High Seas!

Have rousing battles between rival buccaneer ships on the high seas with Pieces of Eight: The Cursed Blade or Pieces of Eight: The Maiden's Vengeance .

You play this game with a stack of metal pirate coins you can hold in one hand, and that stack represents your ship. Each set has all you need to make your own ship and set sail. Your opponents will each need their own ship sets to play, but there's no other limit to the number of players who can join in.

June 12, 2014: Announcing T-Shirts From Mighty Fine

Munchkin T-Shirts from Mighty Fine!

Do you want more Munchkin t-shirts? Then you're in luck! Last night at Origins we announced that Mighty Fine will produce a full line of Munchkin t-shirts for your t-shirting pleasure! Go get 'em.

Brian Engard

Andrew adds: To the dismay of my mother, I have an entire closet full of geeky T-shirts from fine haberdashers such as woot!, Snorg Tees, 6 Dollar Shirts, and Cracked. I have enough nerdy shirts to last an entire month without repeats, and that's even excluding all the SJ Games company shirts I have. My point is, I have a LOT of shirts and don't need more.

Some would say I have a problem. (Thanks, Mom.)

And still, I am really looking forward to adding the Munchkin shirts from Mighty Fine to my Closet Of Endless Attire, because holy cats they're awesome. Y'all should go take a look.

June 11, 2014: Acid Rain World: Wouldn't This Make An Awesome GURPS Worldbook?

Back in the mid-eighties, Kenner Toys melded the high concepts of G.I. Joe and Transformers into a single line, creating M.A.S.K. (see Wikipedia). That series of action figures and transforming vehicles only survived at retail for a few years, but the idea of transformable vehicles – and the heroes and villains who pilot them – has remained popular in many types of media . . . and the newly-launched Acid Rain World is one of the more gorgeous examples of this that I've seen in a very long time.

These 1/18 action figures and vehicles are a little pricey, but the designs and amazing artwork make me wish there was a chance at producing a GURPS suppment dedicated to the line.

Click through to the Acid Rain World blog and scroll through the posts to see the designs. And then – if you're feeling ambitious – grab your GURPS Robots , GURPS Mecha , and GURPS Vehicles books and take a stab at crafting one of the transforming mecha for your post-apocalyptic military pleasure.

Brickworld Update

My signings now are scheduled for FRIDAY (not Thursday) at 3pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. They'll be at the CrazyBricks booth.

PS - Yes, Phil, that would make an awesome GURPS worldbook.

June 10, 2014: Adventure Time Twitter Text Adventure

Congratulations! You have died!

The creator of Adventure Time did something kind of awesome. I mean, besides letting us make Munchkin Adventure Time . Basically, Pendleton Ward used his Twitter account to run a live text adventure, in the vein of Zork or The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy . Check out this article on io9 for more information (and some pictures!).

June 9, 2014: Steve Is Off To Brickworld

It's a big Lego event in Schaumberg, IL next weekend – June 11 through 15. I will be meeting with Guy Himber, sponsor of the already-successful Crazy Bricks project on Kickstarter. There will also be an autograph session Thursday (for the LEGO fans at the pre-show) and the afternoons of Saturday and Sunday (for the general-admission visitors). Come see me, bring a game, and look at the evil munchkinosity you'll be able to get for your miniature figures.
