December 24, 2016: A Visit From An Ogre

I wrote this for a special event, intending it as a kind of sendoff for the Ogre Designer's Edition . Now it seems appropriate to use it as a welcome for the upcoming release of Ogre Sixth Edition . What says "Happy Holidays" better than a giant cybernetic tank trying to destroy a command post?

A Visit from an Ogre
by Stephen Sciame
Based on Ogre by Steve Jackson and A Visit from St. Nicholas by Clement Clarke Moore

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through command
people were preparing with attack orders in hand;
The howitzers were placed by the building with care,
determined no enemy unit would get there;

The soldiers were geared up all snug in their tanks,
Watching the monitors in their computer banks;
And GEV pilots kicking up dust in their wake,
Came back toward the base to take a short break,

When suddenly at one post there arose such a clamor,
Everyone sprang up to see what was the matter.
When on the monitor there showed a new motion,
Appearing out on the river, approaching from the ocean.

The moon shining bright on the snow,
Gave the light of midday to the infantry below,
When what to everyone's terrified eyes did appear,
But a cybernetic tank, bringing new meaning to fear,

With a complement of missiles and armor plating thick,
They knew right away they must prepare quick.
More rapid than any tank the monstrosity came,
And the men in the post knew the enemy by name:

"It's an Ogre, it looks like a Mark Five,
We need to stop it quickly if we want to stay alive.
Get the tanks in motion and the howitzers on call!
Get the GEVs back out there, we're going to need them all!"

Back toward the front the GEVs did fly,
While the howitzers' bombardment began to fill the sky;
When from the giant tank a missile suddenly flew
The three lead GEVs quickly became two.

And then, with a roar that was heard through the field,
Came the first GEV hits with nuclear yield.
The response from the Ogre did just as loudly resound,
And under its treads disabled GEVs were driven into the ground

They were armored for defense with long range to boot,
The missile tank's volleying attack left the snow covered in soot;
The Ogre's treads were damaged as were some guns on its back,
While the big tanks, the heavies, moved in hunting as a pack.

The shells, how they fired, the Ogre was wary,
Its own guns blazed back its opponents to harry.
The command was then given to take out those guns,
Two more heavies fell 'fore the task was done;

The last heavy commander took aim and gritted his teeth,
Through the smoke he saw another gun down and sighed with relief;
The Ogre still had weapons that fired out more rounds,
That took out the tank and rained fragments all over the ground.

The howitzers could finally hit the giant tank,
And new damage was showing quickly on its flank;
The general yelled to the infantry to take out its treads,
The men rushed at the Ogre, though full of dread;

It spoke not a word, as its weapons cut the infantry down,
And decoding the enemies' battle plans turned right around,
To run over the last of the mechanical units that had come in too close,
And after taking out the howitzers headed back at the command post;

It crashed through the walls turning the command into rubble,
The mission complete it headed back to its lines on the double.
Though no one was left to hear as it rolled away from the fight –
The robot called out: "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"

December 23, 2016: Rudolph The Regular Guy

If any of you out there are like me, you're panicking right now because you still have gifts to buy and time is most definitely running out.

That's why I want to sing you a song I heard recently, about a last-minute shopper who had a happy ending. Enjoy!

Munchkin Reindeer Games

Rudolph the Regular Guy

Rudolph the regular guy
Had a very long gift list.
He never got 'round to shopping!
Now all his friends will be … mad.

So with two days till Christmas
He ventured out to the stores!
But he had no idea
Where to make holiday scores!

Then through the crowded outdoor mall
Rudolph saw a sign:
"Boardgames and card games make great gifts!"
In the window at his FLGS!

Then how Rudolph's friends loved him!
As they shouted out with glee,
"Rudolph the regular guy!
I love what you got for me!"

And the best part about that song is that it's probably 100% true, somewhere, for someone. Probably. Since your friendly local game stores are, in fact, great spots to buy last-minute gifts. Like some of our games, as detailed in our gift guides, for example.

So get out there. Be like Rudolph.

December 20, 2016: Munchkin Comics #24 Will Swoop Into Stores Soon! Mwah!

Munchkin Comics #24 Munchkin Comics #24

Sometimes, Munchkin comics from BOOM! Studios answers the real questions we all have in life. Questions like, "What would it be like to go on dates with the monsters from Munchkin ?"

And in this case, the answer is . . . Annoying. At least, Spyke and Flower seem to be annoyed by their speed-dating experience in "You Meet At The Tavern…", a story penned by Munchkin Czar Andrew Hackard and drawn by Phil Murphy. Turns out Ghoulfiends, Net Trolls, and Maul Rats aren't exactly sparkling conversationalists. Neither Spyke nor Flower reacts well to their series of bad dates. But that's okay; in the end, they both return to what they really love.

And that's what this issue is all about: Love. And Munchkin Valentines . But mostly love.

The comic's second story answers another question entirely: "How do you superhero?" You'll have to read the issue to get a step-by-step answer, written and illustrated by Art Baltazar. It's very detailed. It even tells you how to handle your laundry. Will it prepare you for real superheroing? Maybe. Will it prepare you for playing Super Munchkin Guest Artist Edition? Yes!

December 19, 2016: A Munchkin Guest Artist Season's Greeting

Lar's Season Greeting

This time of year, everyone is getting into the holiday spirit – including our guest artists! These talented folks are the pens behind our Munchkin Guest Artist Edition line, celebrating the 15th anniversary of Munchkin . Each of them has contributed their own take on the Munchkin characters, so I asked a few of them what they think the true meaning of Christmas is . . . to a munchkin!

The answers were sometimes funny, sometimes heartwarming, and always special. Heck, Lar DeSouza ( Super Munchkin Guest Artist Edition ) even responded with an original picture (right)! Thanks so much to all of the artists who made 2016, and are making 2017, amazing years for Munchkin !

"The true meaning of Christmas is sharing the loot you grabbed with the friends you just stabbed in the back. Who are dead. So no sharing. It's a Christmas miracle!" – Len Peralta (Star Munchkin Guest Artist Edition, Munchkin Apocalypse Guest Artist Edition)

"The true meaning of Christmas . . . No crying, no fighting, be nice to each other. That's what I tell my kids. Oh. And eat lots of good food!" – Art Baltazar (Super Munchkin Guest Artist Edition)

"For a munchkin, I'm sure the meaning of the holidays is maybe 1-2 days with no monster trying to kill them. Even monsters take Christmas off." – Katie Cook (Munchkin Cthulhu Guest Artist Edition, Munchkin Oz Guest Artist Edition)

December 18, 2016: Crowdfunding Focus: Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5

Crowdfunding Focus

Not many Kickstarters make millions of dollars. Even fewer do that in a matter of hours. But that's what happened for Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5 (WARNING: some adult content), which launched its campaign in late November. This dungeon-horror fantasy game made over two million dollars in its initial 1.0 run; destroying all expectations with the 1.5 launch, it currently sits at over seven million dollars.

I was one of the people who passed on Kingdom Death: Monster the first time around, but I couldn't stop thinking about it. It has stellar miniatures (its calling card among gamer circles). But the fact is, the game seems solid. I haven't played it myself, but after watching multiple walk-throughs and getting first-hand accounts from my friends, this is a campaign I'm interested in jumping into.

Kingdom Death Monster

But ready to jump you must be, because the price of entry is steep. To get a full game experience, you need to drop $250. I will say that the quality of the components seems to justify the cost, though of course you'll have to decide that for yourself. Keep an eye on the fulfillment time frames as well. While the original Kingdom Death: Monster campaign had notoriously long shipment times, this one seems to have realistic promises, even if it takes a while. Don't go in expecting a ton of games coming in early 2017.

Regardless of your opinion on the game, this campaign is making a big impact on the boardgame industry, so it's worth watching.
