I love holiday books like damn and whoa and fortunately, my un-indicted co-conspirator loves them too. Having worked in social services for so many years, this series, about five young women who grew up together in foster care is near and dear to my heart.

I’ve tinkered with this cover forever. And you know how when you struggle with something for a long time and somebody else comes along and makes one suggestion that is exactly right? Yeah, Whit did that to me. Being the brat that I am I wanted to ignore his suggestion, but it was so right I couldn’t but I still pouted at him, so there. Here’s the blurb and I’ll post the links as soon as it goes up. I hope you enjoy it as much as we’ve enjoyed writing it. And remember, sign up for my newsletter between now and release day to be entered…

Lead me not into temptation, iPhone

iphone-6-rose-gold-006So…my cell phone carrier keeps sending me offers to trade in my old iPhone for the latest version for a measly 300 bucks. First, it hasn’t even been a year since I got my current phone, the iPhone 6, and it’s working just fine. Secondly (or sadly, as some people think), I am one of those people that don’t use even a quarter of the technology the phone has. Seriously, I might as well be a Luddite given my usage of this cell phone. Lastly, my current phone was free — bought it with a gift card I won — and looks practically brand new.

Still. I am so very tempted to give in and buy it.

It’s just so new and sleek and techy-looking and seems to be the picture of functionality. I mean, just look at it.

Oooh, I want it!

Sigh. I’m so shallow.

Went apple picking yesterday…BEHOLD:

the largest apple in a world…mine.

applepicking

I haven’t been apple picking in years, and it was such a great time. We went to the County Line Orchard in Hobart, IN. They have at least 10 different varieties of apples along with gorgeous pumpkins. After about sweaty, but enjoyable, hour of trumping through the orchard, we joined fellow apple-pickers at the onsite restaurant and enjoyed a live band made up of four middle schoolers who were clearly passionate about the music and excited to be in front of such a big audience. They’d probably hate this description, as they were rocking hard on their electric guitars, keyboard and drums, but they were just so ADORABLE. Actually, they were talented too, but mostly adorable. I wish I’d gotten the band’s name as I’d share it here.

Later we did a little shopping in the store and found apple butter, freshly-baked apple cinnamon doughnuts (Oh my God), and of course, caramel apples. I also enjoyed freshly grilled, still-on-the-cob sweet corn. It was just so…YUM. Before finally leaving for the day, we made our happy, muddy way through the maze in the cornfield, because of course they have a cornfield.

All in all, it was a terrific day, and had my brain churning with ideas for scenes in a sweet romance.

Laters,

Lisa

Boo Hoo

fallfoliage

Summer is winding down — you know it and I know it. I don’t like it when summer starts taking curtain calls. Unlike the end of winter and the start of spring, for me there isn’t that sense of new hope, a new beginning, that sense that anything is possible, and that I can affect huge change. The end of summer means the end of light, green and warmth. Curiously, though, I love fall. The colors: oranges, yellows, and russet reds and the temperature: anywhere from low 60s to mid 70s when combined, make me feel just good about almost everything. Autumn is not only gorgeous, but it’s also comfortable. It’s a sweet spot — not too hot and not too cold. I do like that I live in a place that offers a change of seasons.

Still. If the opportunity to move to San Diego arose tomorrow, I’d take it.

P.S. It’s been a long time since I’ve been here, and I apologize. I’ll explain why in a later post.

Getting going (even though spring is being sometimey*)

lake426

I’ve been stalled for most of the year. I haven’t been writing as much as I should (we’ll forget that little confession for the moment), and I haven’t been doing other things like I should. One of those things is taking a run every morning. My excuse for foregoing it was winter. Now to be fair, it’s a darn good excuse. Chicago winters are no joke, and  I, unfortunately, have a hard time making myself run in temperatures below 25 degrees or in more than a few inches of snow. So for me, the advent of spring usually works to give me a good swift kick in the pants and I get up and get going. But this year spring has been really sometimey  — and trust me, as a gemini with a mother who didn’t brook with sometimey (she never even tried), I know it when I see it, and spring, 2015 is definitely sometimey.

Anyway, all that is to say that I have barely been inspired by the season to get out and run. But today I made myself go, and besides getting some fresh air, I also got to enjoy a little bit of nature. So though my bum knee isn’t thanking me, I’m really glad I did it. Happy spring and getting going!

*sometimey: to act inconsistently; to behave differently from day to day

No Plans

A three-toed tree sloth hangs from the trunk of a tree in the jungle on the bank of the Panama Canal

For the first weekend in a month of weekends, I have absolutely no plans. No doctors’ appointments, no cultural or social events…nothing. And it feels GLORIOUS. I’m generally a slothful person anyway, so something like this is a total boon. Let’s see…What shall I do first? I know. Nothing. Life is good.

Bright New Shiny Things

coachdrifterblue

coachdrifterbagpinkcrocodile

Spring is here and throwing off the heavy shackles of winter, my mind (like other people’s, I’m sure) naturally turns to lighter, less weighty things, particularly in terms of colors and fabrics. Right now I’m fixated on getting a new purse (or two or three), and my attention keeps going back to the Coach drifter bag (pictures courtesy of Coach). I am a huge fan of blue and have been my entire life, but something about the pink one is calling to me. Buying that bag in that color would be a bit out of character for me and it would make a nice change. You can find out more about the each individual bag by clicking on each photo, which will take you to the Coach store.
