More Intolerance

Well, it seems that many secularists will never quit trying to make a mockery of God’s Word. The BBC in the UK has started airing a new documentary TV show called Conspiracy Road Trip. Each show has a theme, and the host, Irish comedian Andrew Maxwell, takes a group of people committed to whatever belief he’s talking about and tries to convince them that they’re wrong.

Maxwell considers creationism a “conspiracy,” no different than a belief in UFOs. Of course, it becomes obvious that the program is not intended to sincerely search out a matter but to make a mockery of Christians—particularly biblical creationists.

In a recent episode, Maxwell took five British creationists on a tour of various sites in America (though not all of them were professing Christians). He asked five evolutionary scientists to speak to the group. Maxwell claims he just wanted to have a debate, and seemed at first like he was trying to be objective. However, as he realized that most of the group would not be swayed, he lost his objectivity.

At one point, Maxwell took the group to the Grand Canyon to meet with Don Prothero, an evolutionary geologist and professor at Occidental College in California. Prothero told the groups that he’s a scientist and that he deals “only with natural forces and things that we can observe and test in nature.” He then proceeded to give an evolutionary/millions of years explanation of the Grand Canyon’s formation. His determination to deal only with “natural forces” eliminates God automatically. In other words, he started with the assumption that God and His Word have nothing to do with explaining reality. He started with a bias against anything to do with the God of the Bible. He did not start by looking objectively at the evidence.

Though he claims to work only with observational (or operational) science, evolutionary ideas like millions of years of history are not observable or testable. They’re part of what we would call historical (or origins) science. (Find out more about this distinction in Troy Lacey’s (AiG—U.S.) article, Historical and Observational Science.)

Prothero falsely claims that “all scientists around the world” believe in naturalism and uniformitarianism. One of the TV participants, a vocal creationist and professing Christian named Phil, challenged Prothero on this false claim, noting that there are many scientists who are creationists. In fact, not only does AiG employ such scientists with advanced degrees (like Dr. Georgia Purdom, Dr. Andrew Snelling, Dr. David Menton, Dr. Tommy Mitchell, Dr. Terry Mortenson, and soon Dr. Danny Faulkner), but a list of very qualified creation scientists appears on the AiG website.

Prothero’s response to Phil speaks volumes. “I don’t count them as scientists.” In other words, he has arbitrarily decided that if a person is a creationist, he or she cannot be a “scientist.” So much for Isaac Newton, James Clerk Maxwell, Michael Faraday, and so on!

You see, evolutionists really cannot handle any dissent from their view of human origins—their religion—the religion of evolution and millions of years. So they resort to questioning people’s credentials and refusing to acknowledge their abilities and qualifications as scientists if they disagree with their evolutionary beliefs.

Recall Bill Nye’s recent video about how necessary he believes evolutionary ideas are to every area of science. He believes that we will be unable to produce good scientists without them. (You can read my blog post on Bill Nye’s comments.) But, molecules-to-man evolution has nothing to do with observational science and the great advances scientists have made in research and technology!

In the BBC program, evolutionist Jerry Coyne told the creationists that “any reasonable person who’s not perverse” would have to call the account of Noah’s Ark a “fairy story.” Throughout the episode, the host, Maxwell, like the evolutionary scientists, spoke very negatively of the creationists in his group. He was puzzled as to why all the supposed evidence for evolution and millions of years did not sway them. But of course, his agenda all along was to mock those who believe the creation account in Genesis.

Unfortunately, the program’s failures do not all lie with the evolutionary scientists and the host. With the exception of one (Phil, mentioned above) the creationist participants displayed their own lack of biblical knowledge or the ability to defend their position with reasoned and well-researched answers. Phil seems to have a firm grasp on what the Bible actually says about creation. Of course, he was generally shut down when he tried to explain his views.

Such is typical of so many intolerant secularists nowadays. They don’t want Christians to be shown giving answers and thus showing up the evolutionists for what they are—anti-Christian activists with a blind faith in their anti-God religion of evolution and millions of years. But most of the other participants on the TV program seem unfamiliar with what Genesis says about creation, Adam and Eve, the global Flood, and so on.

I don’t want to eliminate personal responsibility for professing Christians to be reading their Bibles, but I think this highlights an even bigger problem. If the church fails to teach apologetics (i.e., how to use logic in defending the Christian faith and giving answers to the skeptical questions), believers will not be able to give an answer when they are faced with skeptical questions about their faith.

I usually find that when the secular media are discussing the topic of origins,

they try to find some leader in the church who compromises with evolution,
they find people whom they know are not equipped to answer the questions, and
they avoid using creationists who are qualified scientists.

They act this way because they are not out for the truth. They want to shake their fist at God—and “suppress the truth” (Romans 1).

Overall, this BBC program is just another demonstration of the kind of intolerance for God’s Word that exists in our Western culture today.

Frankly, we weren’t surprised at all about what happened during this show—we expected it. And particularly with the BBC network involved, we anticipated nothing but a slam against Bible-believing Christians. That seems to be the norm for the BBC, as we have discovered over the years (especially in its coverage of our Creation Museum). We have found them to be perhaps the most aggressively anti-God media in the world today.

Watch the Opening of “Verbum Domini”

This past Thursday at the Creation Museum, we opened the new exhibit featuring a selection of Bible manuscripts and artifacts that are part of the large Green Collection (of the Green family of Hobby Lobby, the arts and crafts retail store chain). The exhibit is called “Verbum Domini,” which means “the Word of the Lord.”

Steve Green (president of Hobby Lobby), Cary Summers (COO) of the “Passages” traveling exhibit—a large exhibit of manuscripts and artifacts from the same collection currently in Charlotte, North Carolina), and I participated in the opening on this spectacular exhibit at the Creation Museum.

You can watch this special time below:

Click here to view the embedded video.

I urge everyone to visit the Creation Museum and spend two days (all tickets are valid for two consecutive days) visiting the various world-class exhibits, the outside gardens, and the petting zoo. Verbum Domini can be toured at no extra cost—it’s  a part of regular museum admission.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken

A Special International Handover Plus a Tribute

AiG continues to have an influence beyond the USA in teaching biblical authority and the gospel. Our books, DVDs, and web articles have been translated into more than 75 languages, and we continue to travel abroad to give seminars that proclaim the creation/gospel message.  We also host dozens of Christian leaders here at the Creation Museum  each year from around the globe, including through our annual International Training Seminars where leaders from several countries receive intensive apologetics training for about a week, and then return home with several complimentary DVDs, texts, curricula, etc.

Much of the recent effort abroad was due to the efforts of Dr. David Crandall, director of a division called AiG Worldwide. Yesterday at a special chapel in front of our staff, we announced a transition: after 7 years of being our international director, Dr. Crandall is retiring. I shared with the staff that when Dr. Crandall first came on board, he intended to minister with us for two years.

Steve Ham, our executive VP, will now oversee both our American and international outreaches, including our teaching seminars, translations work, and so on.

Here are some photos of the handover Friday:

I shared with the staff that Dr. Crandall will be retiring from AiG, although he would remain on stand-by to assist from time to time, even though he now lives in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Crandall spoke to us and gave an update on international ministry, include a recent stint in a closed  country.

I gave Dr. Crandall and his wife (and assistant) Diana a plaque of recognition and paid tribute to them for their service.

A part of the handover from Dr. Crandall to Steve included the passing of Dr. Crandall’s collection of flags (that were on his desk) to Steve.

Then Steve thanked Dr. Crandall for the foundation he had laid for our international outreach, and told the staff about how AiG will build on what Dr. Crandall had started.

Steve prayed with Dr. Crandall and Diana as we closed our special chapel.

Pray for Steve as he now leads the strategic work of AiG Worldwide. For more about our global efforts, see www.AnswersWorldwide.org

Spectacular New Exhibit

A Striking New Addition to our Bible-Proclaiming Museum

Yesterday, a stunning new exhibit was dedicated inside our Creation Museum. It’s an exhibit of 27 valuable Bible-related artifacts that honor God’s Word as it has endured over the centuries, called Verbum Domini (“The Word of the Lord”). It’s a loan of a small number of the rare Bible manuscripts and other items from the famed Green Collection . The entire collection will eventually be placed in the future Museum of the Bible in Washington DC and just two blocks south of the most-visited museum in America, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and right at a subway stop.

Thursday’s dedication ceremony in front of our staff was led by Steve Green, chairman of the board of the future Museum of the Bible, which has already collected more than 40,000 biblical antiquities. He is the president of the well-known retail arts and crafts chain of stores called Hobby Lobby.

Here is Steve briefing our staff about the full collection.

Steve Green

Steve told us something about a page from the Codex Climaci Rescriptus that is now on display—it’s from one of the oldest near-complete Bibles in the world. This Bible was produced in the fourth century AD in Aramaic, Jesus Christ’s language.

Steve and the Codex Climaci Rescriptus

Steve said that whenever the Green Foundation can reach as many people as possible to encourage them to read the Bible, he would look into it. In chapel, Steve declared that Verbum Domini honors the world’s most indestructible book. He indicated that the exhibit also mentions the efforts of brave Christians like Tyndale (burned at the stake for translating the Bible into English) and Martin Luther.

Two rare items in the display include a King James “HE” Bible (1611) and a Tyndale New Testament (1552)—the latter features woodcut illustrations. See the photos below.

King James Version

Tyndale New Testament

Steve told our staff that his family’s love of the Bible was a major motivation in gathering the collection. He noted that he has toured the Creation Museum twice, once with his family.

During the dedication ceremony, I shared that our museum is dedicated to proclaiming the authority of the Bible—and that we show visitors the Bible has been translated accurately over the years. It is the Word of God. Here I am with Steve in front of the Verbum Domini exhibit and just before we prayed over it.

The staff participated in the ceremony—see this photo.

Here is the outside of the exhibit—with a Verbum Domini sign.

Exhibit

The Museum of the Bible will be remodeling an existing building in Washington DC over the next few years. The Green Collection is maybe the best collection of Bibles and related artifacts that is in private hands. Steve emphasized to us that The Museum of the Bible will become a center of research for Bible scholars. We are thrilled to exhibit a few of the incredible items from this spectacular collection. I can’t wait to be able to see The Museum of the Bible finished in a few years in DC.

By the way, for Creation Museum guests there will be no additional cost to view Verbum Domini.

The Creation Museum and the Passages exhibition (the sister traveling exhibition of Verbum Domini and which is also a part of the future Museum of the Bible collection) are looking into a possible long-term relationship, with additional items to be placed in the Verbum Domini exhibit at the Creation Museum—and perhaps being changed out every six months or so. This would mean that every six months, visitors to the Creation Museum will have the opportunity to see new spectacular items from the Green Collection/Museum of the Bible.

For more information about Verbum Domini’s sister touring exhibit, Passages (currently in Charlotte, North Carolina), plus the future Museum of the Bible in Washington DC, go to www.explorepassages.com. If you can visit Passages, I urge you to do so.

Be sure to read our web article on yesterday’s thrilling dedication ceremony.

Battling with Christian Colleges

Well, it’s not just professors at Christian colleges that we have to worry about challenging our young people’s faith—even admissions counselors are out to “dialogue” about whether or not Christians should accept Genesis as literal history.

An AiG supporter recently sent me this exchange he had with an admissions counselor from a Christian college. You see, the counselor contacted this young man in the hope of recruiting him to the school, but (sadly) he ended up challenging this supporter’s belief in a literal Genesis.

The supporter, A.M., told the counselor he had already chosen a college to attend, based on their acceptance of the creation account in Genesis as literal history. The rest of the conversation is below. It is important to note how the counselor defines “true education”—basically, because A.M. decided to take God at His Word and refused to compromise, no “true education” could happen.

Admissions Officer:

If you don’t mind me asking, is that the only reason you are attending there?

A.M.:

One’s views on Genesis affects everything, so yes, it is. I would never attend a school that compromised on the Word of God in order to appease secular scientists, and if a school says they believe the Bible to be the infallible Word of God, yet they allow for consideration of billions of years, death before Adam, etc., then they clearly are doing nothing more than double speak; the seven core doctrines of all Christianity all spring forth in the first book of the Bible: creation, corruption, catastrophe, confusion, Christ, cross, consummation.

Admissions Counselor:

Our school would hold to that as well. However, solely from your words in this email exchange, it seems that you are approaching your education as if you already are decided on how you approach Biblical interpretation and your philosophy on the canon. Therefore this leaves little room for true education, as you already have set parameters on what you will and will not be taught.

A.M.:

I took hermeneutics from Dr. Daniel Akin. I sat under Dr. Ed Gravely for History of Ideas. I have been in seminary for almost 5 years, and find it reproachable that you would demean my stance, my position because of your own lax hermeneutics. Do not lecture me on “true” education, for you have shown the exact opposite in this e-mail by questioning my credentials, my philosophy and most importantly my biblical worldview. If you think that your education exceeds that of the following scientists who support the young earth belief, then I am truly sorry. http://www.answersingenesis.org/home/area/bios/

Admissions Counselor:

I don’t in any way mean to demean you or your professors or any one’s stance. I tend to hold your worldview as well. I’m not familiar with these names but I’m sure they are fine gentleman who take an honest approach to Scripture and are Biblical in their interpretations. I am just trying to dialogue about the way we often approach the weighty yet fragile subjects of scripture and its teaching. Thank you for your time.

You know, the most incredible part of this email exchange is that the admissions counselor is from a Christian college—one he says holds to young earth creationism—and that he himself says he would “tend” to believe the same. But his approach to God’s Word is all wrong. Rather than take God at His Word, this counselor seems to think that being open to interpretations of Genesis that conflict with what it actually says would provide “true education” for students.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with learning about other interpretations and philosophies in regard to Scripture. But you know, what we believe about the Bible must be grounded in what it actually says. The truest kind of education about Scripture comes from Scripture itself. Proverbs 9:10 tells us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

Christian colleges should be affirming a belief in a literal Genesis, not challenging students about their desire for an education because they refuse to compromise about the Bible. I would urge you to read my book Already Compromised to find out more about what is being taught in our Christian colleges and seminaries. And if you’re looking for a Christian college that teach young-earth creationism, visit CreationColleges.org for a list of schools that affirm Answers in Genesis’s statement of faith.

For a list of Colleges that state they take a stand on a literal Genesis, go to CreationColleges.org.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken

ABC Getting Rave Reviews

AiG’s new Bible curriculum for Sunday schools (Answers Bible Curriculum) is really taking off and getting rave reviews.

AiG speaker, researcher, and writer Dr. Georgia Purdom wrote a blog post on the curriculum recently. She began this way.

A few weeks ago, I received this testimony about AiG resources from Kathy, a senior pastor’s wife in Nevada.

I really want to encourage you, Dr. Purdom, and the work you are doing with Answers in Genesis. We, at Calvary Chapel Lone Mountain in Las Vegas, are preaching and teaching the same fundamental truths from the same starting point and are thrilled with your new resources! Currently, we are doing the Foundations course as a class for our church (men, women, & teens), and having special break-out sessions for the teens to give them opportunities for mock debates to learn how to graciously and intelligently defend their faith. They are thriving and loving it!

We are also using the AIG Sunday school curriculum. Dr. Purdom, I want to encourage you with what I am seeing. Even though the curriculum is designed to reach the intended age audience, what we are experiencing is that our teachers are so excited about what they are learning, their enthusiasm about the content and how it is presented is transforming our children’s ministry (hence, teachers -> students -> Church -> etc!).

To God be the glory! The teachers are so stoked about what they are learning that they cannot contain themselves! God is totally blessing the work of your hands. There is so much fruit, and it is fruit that will remain for all of eternity! Praise God!

I encourage you to read the rest of Dr. Purdom’s post (and find out about her own experiences with this curriculum)—I believe you will be blessed and will want to find out more about AiG’s ABC!

To find out more about ABC and how to order, go to www.answersbiblecurriculum.com.

Rescuing Our Kids

Almost every year, AiG formulates a theme for a ministry emphasis that will last throughout the year.

Because of the increasing emphasis by secular evolutionary humanists to try to stop kids from hearing the truth about creation, and to teach them evolution as fact, we decided that the theme for the next two years should involve reaching the current generation of children—and coming generations.

We are also seeing an increasing number of atheists who are accusing Christians—like those of us at AiG—of “child abuse” because we teach children the truth of God’s Word in Genesis.

After much discussion, and working with our marketing agents at Joseph David Advertising, we came up with the following as our theme for the next two years:

“Standing Our Ground”
“Rescuing Our Kids”

Who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father. (Galatians 1:4, NASB)

Through the apostle Paul in Galatians 1:4, God tells us we live in a “present evil age.” But Jesus Christ “gave himself for our sins so that He might rescue us.” Proclaiming that gospel message in this evil world is the church’s most urgent call. Satan, however, is after the minds of this and future generations, and his key tactic is to deceive our youth (and adults) into believing lies (such as evolution and millions of years) that discredit the Bible’s authority and accuracy. It is from the Bible that we get the trustworthy gospel message, and so God’s Word needs to be upheld.

With this urgent gospel-proclaiming task in mind, the AiG team came up with this theme of Standing Our Ground and Rescuing Our Kids (Galatians 1:4).

The rescue from this evil world is through the gospel of Christ alone. In our humanistic age, the anti-biblical ideas of millions of years and evolution are causing countless people to doubt the Bible, including its salvation message. Our hearts need to be filled with an urgency to see children, teens, and adults rescued from the coming judgment. There is no greater task for Christians today than to be Standing Our Ground and Rescuing Our Kids—in fact, rescuing anyone heading to a Christ-less eternity.

At our staff chapel yesterday, Steve Ham (who heads up AiG’s Worldwide outreach) gave a 10-minute message to explain Galatians 1:3-4 in regards to our new ministry theme. I encourage you to listen to his message below:

New Ark Exhibit Opened at Creation Museum

The Creation Museum opened a new Ark exhibit this past Friday. This is a large outside display—a very intriguing one.

The talented designers for the Ark Encounter project (involving building a life-size replica of Noah’s Ark out of wood), designed one Ark bay (one of 132 such bays to go in the future Ark) to illustrate how much room there is inside, as well as a teaching exhibit about the size of the Ark.

This Ark bay has been built just outside the portico area of the Creation Museum and is facing the lake. See the following photos:

Jesus Created Ministries

Since we opened the Creation Museum over five years ago (hard to believe!), many people have traveled here from the Tulsa, Oklahoma, area to tour our 75,000-square-foot museum—more than 700 miles away. One of the reasons we’re seeing so many museum visitors from the eastern part of that state is through the efforts of our ministry friend Clint Bishard, who leads an organization called Jesus Created Ministries. Earlier this month, Clint brought another 40 people with him on a bus trip to the museum. They drove all day Thursday to our area, spent the entire Friday at the museum, and then drove back on Saturday.
If you live in Oklahoma or one of its neighboring states, I encourage you to get to know more about Clint and his ministry of “creation evangelism,” and then consider joining him for one of his periodic bus trips to the Creation Museum. His website is www.JesusCreated.org.
We greatly appreciate Clint’s zeal to proclaim the reliability of the Bible from the very first verse.
The Lie Now Available
The revised, updated, and expanded twenty-fifth anniversary edition of my first major book, The Lie—that has seen around 450,000 copies in print over the past two years—is now available.
Here are signs we have placed in our bookstores at the Creation Museum:

Evangelism at the Fairgrounds
Just minutes away from the Creation Museum at the Boone County Fairgrounds there was an evangelistic outreach last night to the local community called the Festival of Grace. The festival included a concert from the very popular Christian singer David Crowder.
Just before David Crowder came to stage, Steve Ham of AiG represented the Creation Museum and gave the crowd an appeal for the gospel of Christ. Steve covered three main points.

The confirmable reliability of the history in God’s Word helps us to know that the Bible is authentically and authoritatively God’s Word. In doing this, Steve outlined the confirmable history in the first 11 chapters of Genesis.
Because the Bible is the only true revelation of God, then only in God’s Word can we know the truth about life.
Steve then outlined the Bible’s teaching on the only way to salvation: faith in Jesus Christ alone and not our own good works.

Please pray for the people who heard the gospel clearly and that Christ would save people to His glory.

Sad—But a Confirmation of the Decline

Sadly, what we’ve been saying and predicting here at AiG for years has been confirmed in a recent study. The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life’s latest research shows that the “religious” group growing the fastest in America consists of those who do not identify with any “religion” at all. (Of course, everyone has a religion—atheism is a religion).   Now, I posted about this on my Facebook page recently, but I wanted to write some further thoughts on it.

The quote I posted on Facebook was from the CNN story (religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/10/09/survey-one-in-five-americans-is-religiously-unaffiliated). I think it sums up the research well enough to repeat here:

The fastest growing “religious” group in America is made up of people with no religion at all, according to a Pew survey showing that one in five Americans is not affiliated with any religion. . . . The survey found that the ranks of the unaffiliated are growing even faster among younger Americans. Thirty-three million Americans now have no religious affiliation, with 13 million in that group identifying as either atheist or agnostic, according to the new survey.

In the new edition of my book The Lie: Evolution/Millions of Years (that  was released this month), I discuss the shift that has occurred in American culture. Basically, the culture has become more anti-Christian, despite having more access to churches and Christian resources than any other country. Below is the explanation I give in my new edition of The Lie for this shift in our society, and I think it’s very appropriate in light of the Pew Forum’s results:

In recent times, however, more and more people have rejected the Bible as the absolute authority on which to build one’s worldview. As people have increasingly rejected belief in God’s authoritative Word as the foundation for their thinking, they have also questioned the basis of the morals of the society in which they live. For instance, if there is no God, then why should they obey any of the Ten Commandments? Why should anyone say gay marriage is wrong? Why should women be barred from having abortions whenever they desire? Once people eliminate God’s Word as the basis for their morality, they set about to change any laws based on Christian absolutes that help God as Creator (and thus owner) of everything.

You see, the authority of God’s Word continues to be eroded in our culture—even in many of our churches!—and we’re seeing the fruits of that erosion in statistics like the above. When I give presentations, I tell people that America is heading down the same path as England and Europe. Two-thirds of England’s young people say they don’t believe in God! Furthermore, church attendance is down to just 5% there. America is headed that direction—and this Pew Forum survey confirms it.

Now, our research and predictions on the exodus of young people from the church are in my book Already Gone. According to our research, two-thirds of young people are walking away from the church by the time they reach college age. Britt Beemer (co-author of Already Gone, and head of America’s Research Group who conducted the study) and I also deal with why this is happening. At the root, our children are being secularized—through public school teachers, Christian leaders who have compromised on Genesis, and others. Additionally, our children are not being taught creation and general biblical apologetics (a defense of the faith), but they are being taught how to defend naturalism (atheism), evolutionary ideas, and millions of years. So it should come as no surprise that young people are leaving the church in America! (To order Already Gone, visit our our online bookstore at www.AnswersBookstore.com.)  And it only takes one generation to lose a culture!  America is on the brink of such a change right now.

Romans 1 lays out the battle that is before us: “although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:21–22).

Sinful man is rejecting God for a lie. And I believe the Pew Forum’s research confirms the critical importance of the ministry of Answers in Genesis as we combat the anti-God religion of evolution and millions of years that is taught throughout the world—which justifies people’s rejection of God’s Word—and as we call the church and its leaders away from compromising with the secular religion of the day and to return to the authority of the Word of God, beginning in Genesis.

Believers everywhere must be diligent in combating this rapid secularization of America. I urge you to ask your church leaders where they stand on biblical authority and to hold them to account—and to boldly proclaim the truth of God’s Word to the world. As Colossians 4:5–6 tells us, “Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”
