Jack and the Beanstalk by Mary Uhles
Earlier this week, Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast blog featured the work of Mary Uhles, leading with her interpretation of Jack going down the beanstalk. I like it and wanted to share and then realized Uhles is a Nashvillian like myself which made me even more eager to share.
You can see more of Uhles's work on her site. And don't miss the Seven Imp post since it also features Susan Eaddy's amazing work, alas none of it fairy tales. Drat!

A-England's Gothic Beauties Nail Polish
Jane Eyre - Tess D'urbervilles - Ophelia - Lady of Shalott - Dorian GrayI have posted about A-England nail polish before. It's a double threat to my pocket book since my only makeup weakness is nail polish. I have to wear it to keep my nails from breaking (some things about getting older are a nuisance although I enjoy it overall) and I might as well have fun while applying and wearing it.
Well, A-England is a double threat because (1) it's a great polish, one of my favorites for application and wear and (2) the collections--only three so far--are all literature inspired. Now isn't that an impossible lure for someone like me? Yes, it is.
The first collection was King Arthur inspired (Tristam and Lady of the Lake are my faves) and the second drew from other Legends (St George and Dragon are my faves from this one).
The newest is the Gothic Beauties collection and it pulls mostly from 19th century literature (excepting some Shakespeare), including two favorites of mine, Jane Eyre and Lady of Shalott. (Hey, those are related to Bluebeard and Rapunzel, so we're still on topic here. Sort of!)
The best places for now to see how the polishes look is at the Fashion Polish Blog (one image below) and at the A Polish Addict blog (source of picture at top of this post). The polishes can be ordered from the A-England site as well as Llarowe from whom I have ordered in the past with success.
Now this would be the company to create my dream fairy tale inspired nail polish collection. Orly and China Glaze and BB Couture and others have made some fine attempts but I'd tweak every single collection.

New Release: The Annotated Brothers Grimm (The Bicentennial Edition) edited by Maria Tatar
The Annotated Brothers Grimm (The Bicentennial Edition)
edited by Maria Tatar is coming out next month. This post is a little early, but the book is currently 41% off on Amazon so I wanted to highlight it now. The original edition is out of print in anticipation. I have the original, of course, and I know many of you do, too. Which will either make you want this new edition or at least consider it as a holiday gift for someone else. To spread the love and appreciation of fairy tales, of course! I will try to get more information about the expanded edition, but for now, this is the official description from the publisher:
Celebrate the 200th birthday of the Brothers Grimm stories with this lavish volume now richly expanded for a new generation.
Publication of the Grimms’ Children’s Stories and Household Tales in 1812 brought the great European oral folk tradition into print for the first time. The Annotated Brothers Grimm returns in a deluxe and augmented 200th-anniversary edition commemorating that landmark event. Adding to such favorites as “Cinderella,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Snow White,” and “Rapunzel,” Maria Tatar includes six new entries, among them “Four Clever Brothers,” “The Water of Life,” “The White Snake,” and “The Old Man and His Grandson.” The expanded edition features an enhanced selection of illustrations, many in color, by legendary artists such as George Cruikshank and Arthur Rackham; annotations that explore the historical origins, cultural context, and psychological effects of the tales; and a biographical essay on Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. A perennial favorite in the acclaimed Norton Annotated series, this magnificent volume will draw both children and adults into the enchanting world of fairy tales.

Previewing Sephora's Cinderella Collection
“Forget the entrance, it’s the exit he’ll remember.”
Now that's a solid marketing line for a Cinderella inspired product.
And here's a teaser trailer which hardly references Disney at all but definitely references Cinderella herself, at least the Perrault version:
From First Look: Sephora’s Cinderella Collection! at InStyle:
Courtesy of Disney and InStyle/Instagram![]()
Cinderella is having a stylish year! Not long after Christian Louboutin gave her glass slippers a couture revamp, Sephora teamed up with Disney to create a limited-edition collection inspired by the princess. We got a sneak peek at the lineup, and we’re loving the regal perfume, four-shadow palette, and compact mirror, shown here. Also included: A six-piece nail polish set, four lipsticks, a roll-on fragrance, and a 20-shade palette inspired by the colors used in the animated film, all of which will land in stores this October. Plus, Sephora will roll out two more Disney princess-inspired collections, so be on the lookout for those in spring 2013 and fall 2014.
And that is a pretty compact. A pretty trinket that resembles a pocket watch but is of course referencing Cinderella's midnight deadline. I, of course, am most interested in the nail polish colors and names. Should be interesting. This is all part of a bigger Disney Princess line in the works at Sephora apparently.
If you shop at Sephora and are a Beauty Insider, you can also get passes for a screening of the Cinderella re-release. The offer comes in a Sephora email.

Once Upon a Time Season 2 Trailer
That's the preview for the second season of Once Upon a Time. There's talk of Mulan and Captain Hook and other interesting things. Which also makes me weary, I admit. Is it just me or are most of the best parts of the show independent of the Disney film inspirations? I know I am in the minority and I am grateful the show is a breakout hit since it has people talking and reading fairy tales, too, but I wish I could mash this one up with Grimm, take my favorite parts, add some more and make the show that I would adore.
I am pleased that the ending of last season blew things up and gives us a whole new premise for Season 2 though.
Season 1 has been steadily dropping in price on DVD all week, too, unless it pops up again in price before this post goes live.

Fairy Tale Vanguard Programme
The Fairy Tale Vanguard conference happened in August but I wanted to share the Programme (alas, no abstracts) with you since it looks like it was a great conference. Did anyone reading here attend and d would you like to report to the SurLaLune readership? The Fairy Tale An "Innocent" Genre panel papers sound particularly interesting to me in my own reading although it all sounds marvelous, of course.

SurLaLune on Wal-Mart Exclusive Snow White & The Huntsman
I just wanted to verify to the SurLaLune readers here that the film short--"Snow White Through Time"--which features an interview with me appears on the Wal-Mart exclusive release of the Snow White & The Huntsman (Blu-ray + DVD). You can buy it in stores or online. I don't think the DVD will be reprinted in any new print runs, so once these sell out, the exclusive release will no longer be available.
The Bonus DVD also includes extra features about the music and the art of the mirror ("A Mirror Like No Other) as well as a music video by Florence + The Machine.
I bought my copy yesterday and was relieved. It's hard to give up control and one always hopes that the editing is fair. In other words, I don't think I sound like a fool! And I have been told the piece was re-edited to add more of my interview into it so the studio was happy with it, too. Thanks to Karina and her team who handled me so well and made this a great experience.

Latest Trailer for CW's Beauty and the Beast
Have you seen this latest trailer for the upcoming Beauty and the Beast on CW? It premieres on October 11th, a month from today so I am expecting more and more press to start appearing on it.
So far the most common complaint, not just from me, is that the hero is no Beast. A scar makes him beastly? And we won't even get into how insulting that is to war veterans--like the hero--who bear worse scars than this. Ick. Yes, he may be beastly in other ways, such as a tendency for violence, but that then leads us into other prickly issues about abuse, doesn't it? I hope not, but it's always a possibility.
And after all that, I bet this is going to be a big hit for CW's audience. But for now we'll play the waiting game. And worry just a little...
