Even the most random toss…

So, being a gal who lives in the country (well, off and on, at the moment), I’m accustomed to taking walks with a peach, or some other fruit in my hand, and just wandering and munching. It’s relaxing for me. I also tend to pitch the remains of whatever I’m eating into the tall grass or woods — let the animals and insects pick it apart. As we always joke, maybe a tree will grow.

Well, an amazing thing happened. A tree did grow, from one of those random tosses. We just didn’t realize it until re...

Grace notes…

From an article about photographer Dawoud Bey:

This time he locked eyes with his would-be subject and asked if he could take a photograph. The man said yes. When Mr. Bey asked him to do what he’d been doing before, the man leaned against the railing and cupped his left hand, providing what Mr. Bey calls a “grace note.”

“I had figured out the geometry of the space and the interlocking shapes,” Mr. Bey said. “But I needed the quirky little gestures of behavior that mark the individual, the stuff...

Some words, to lift you…

“If I lose the light of the sun, I will write by candlelight, moonlight, no light. If I lose paper and ink, I will write in blood on forgotten walls. I will write always. I will capture nights all over the world and bring them to you.”

– from Henry Rollins

A moment, with inspiration…

Inspiration is elusive, glorious, and utterly fleeting. People talk about the thunderbolt hitting, but for me, there’s a physical and mental component to being hit with inspiration. The mental aspect is an unfolding, an image, a set of words that ring true, feel right, and that remain with you as though your brain suddenly laid a big fat egg that it wants to sit on for a while.

The physical sensation is a little different. What I feel is a hot jolt that starts in my heart, accompanied by a lit...

The iPhone and Kitty Ears!

So, I’ve been home from Comic Con for three days. Here are some thoughts:

I love the iPhone. I resisted it for years, said that my cheap no-contract flip phone was good enough, that I didn’t need anything fancy — no internet, no email, no whatever. All this high-tech stuff! Phooey! I was No-Frills Liu.

Until, after losing internet access for a couple days, I finally gave in. And became an addict.

When it comes to communication, everything is easier with the iPhone. Plus, it’s fun. I didn’t even...

Sunday. I made it.

Yesterday I had my first wave of Comic Con fatigue. It hit me hard, just before I left the hotel room (all I wanted to do was hide under the covers), and then every now and then throughout the day I was like, “Meep! Meep! Too many people!”

I’m not great with crowds. Which doesn’t mean that Comic Con is my personal hell. Just that I need to take a couple deep breaths before throwing myself into the fray.

The Northstar panel was great, though — maybe my favorite so far. Loved the other panelists,...

Saturday! Comic Con! Madness!

It’s Saturday, which is typically the busiest, craziest, wildest day of the convention. Which means, today, there will probably be a lot of superheroic thongs.

Here’s my one panel of the day (but first, check out my interview with Chris Morrow of CNN):

1:00-2:00 Northstar: Coming Out to Getting Married!— Northstar, the first openly gay superhero in mainstream comics and a member of both the X-Men and Alpha Flight, came out of the closet 20 years ago-and this year he ties the knot! Northstar has...

SDCC continues! Friday!

As I tweeted last night, my celebrity encounters have gone like this:

Today, Anthony Bourdain strode past me, and I got into an elevator w/ Tricia Helfer, Tahmoh Penikett, and Michael Trucco. #CYLONS #HOT #SDCC

Oh, Comic Con. You are fun.

I woke up this morning and couldn’t find my computer or glasses. After a long, sweaty search, I discovered both those things on the floor, beside the bed — apparently kicked there in my sleep like a pair of dirty socks.

There’s no point to that story. Excep...

SDCC Giveaway

This year at San Diego Comic Con I’m giving limited edition access to a story I wrote several years ago: a prequel to the Dirk & Steele series, called WHERE THE HEART LIVES. If you’re at Comic Con, you can pick up the card at Booth #236, where I’ll be hanging out with the lovely Anne Elizabeth — and I’ll be happy to sign it, as well.

And here’s my signing/panel schedule for the day!

Things I love…

I have rediscovered the television series, Witchblade, which I never had much of a chance to watch when it originally aired in 2001. This time around? I love it. The mythology, the writing, the emo-angst, Yancy Butler’s performances…it all comes together in an energetic, entertaining bundle of girl-power love.

Speaking of excellent television, the original Danish version of The Killing is wild, complex, tense, and powerfully good. I haven’t seen the American remake, and to be honest, have litt...
