Windows 8 custom icons

The new Windows 8 start screen is dynamic, but just unfortunately just as stuck in two worlds as the whole operating system itself. Any Windows 7 app can be pinned to the start screen, but it's truncated and looks like a legacy app.

This has led to a small but burgeoning market of custom tile creation. My favourite so far is Oblytile, which allows you to upload your own images and link them to either apps on your computer or websites. With it, I was able to create a start screen with a lot more visual punch.

As you can see, I'm not finished yet. I haven't made icons for Cyberduck or Filezilla, or the plethora of other Win7 apps. But I have made icons for the major CS apps, Office, and the six main websites I spend time in. I'll be adding more as time goes on, but I thought I could do something cool here and share the files.

+ Download the Builder Files for these Windows 8 custom icons, and add to the set with your own ideas. This link contains the jpegs you see here, and the Indesign file with the Microsoft Zegoe font.

Skype apps for recording podcasts on Windows

Ever since I moved from Mac to PC, one giant hole has been in how Skype records apps. Frankly, I simply haven't found one that works as well as Ecamm's Skype Recorder for Mac worked.

I first tried Amolto Call Recorder, but found that after 30 minutes or so the audio would begin to fall in on itself. The person I was speaking to would sound like he was answering me 2 seconds before I finished talking. This was no good.

Next, I tried Callnote Premium Call Recorder. The interface looked great, and it appeared like it was recording. It even made a little save dialogue after it was done. But the file doesn't exist. It didn't actually record anything. If it did, it saved it on some nebulous version of my computer where I have no access.

I'm going to try Virtual Audio Streaming next. I'll let you know how it goes. Any recommendations?
