September 9, 2015: Checking in on some old friends! Dark Matter Set Tour Part 3!
Hey, what’s the old Stargate gang up to? Well, I’m glad you asked.
Former Stargate Executive Producer and writer (and, oh by the way, Dark Matter season 1 Consulting Producer) Martin Gero is show running his own series, Blindspot, that premieres on NBC – Monday, September 21st at 10:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, I little further north, former Stargate fight and stunt coordinator – and present Arrow right and stunt coordinator, James “Bam Bam” Bamford is multi-tasking this upcoming season, assuming the directorial reins for an episode.

Very happy for both these guys and wishing them all the best in the coming weeks and months. Looks like they’re going to be VERY busy!
Speaking of which – big conference call today with Executive Producer Vanessa Piazza and Line Producer Norman Denver to discuss Dark Matter’s second season. Then, next week, the room reconvenes to – hopefully – finish breaking those last handful of episodes!
Let’s cap today’s blog entry by continuing our tour of the Dark Matter sets: the quarters!

September 8, 2015: I’m back! Dark Matter Set Tour II!

I return from my Toronto trip – three hours after leaving for the airport.
I left the house at 10:30 a.m. this morning and arrived at the airport just before 11:00 a.m. About a half an hour before departure, I picked up a take-out burger and a side of jalapeño poppers, met up with my writing partner, Paul, and patiently waited to board. If all went according to plan, we would get into Toronto for a 8:00 p.m., get a good night’s sleep, and then spend much of Wednesday talking prep and production before catching the 6:00 p.m. flight back to Vancouver.
IF all went according to plan.
But, of course, we were flying Air Canada. I didn’t the first announcement in its entirety, but caught the words “cancelled” and “broken”. Broken? Broken?! What were the chances that, of the four dozen or so flights on the board, OURS would be the one that was cancelled.
As it turned out, pretty good!
It was confirmed. Our flight was cancelled. But arrangements were being made to put people on flights leaving later, throughout the day. Priority, however, would be given to those catching connecting flights. “Who’s catching a connecting flight?”asked the woman behind the counter, prompting fully two-thirds of the people at the gate to throw their hands up and step forward. “We’re not getting into Toronto until after midnight,”Paul predicted.
Of course, that wold have entailed our leaving Vancouver sometime in the next four hours – which, honestly, didn’t look like it was going to happen. So we called it a day and went home, out the $60 I’d spent on transport, airport bottled water, and lunch including those jalapeños poppers that, in hindsight, should be eaten immediately and not left to cool and congeal in their own little grease jackets.
Let’s celebrate my return home with Part II of the Dark Matter Set Tour!

September 7, 2015: And the winner is…!

Deleted reveal – photo c/o Melissa O’Neil
Ladies and gentleman, we have a winner! A little over a week ago, I offered fans a chance to win a signed, annotated script of Episode 13. All you had to do? Guess Answer the following questions:
In the season finale, who makes known their intention to go their own way?
Who wiped the crew’s memories?
Who should the crew fear in the season finale?
Which crew member will NOT survive the shocking season one finale?
The answers:
FOUR
FIVE
SIX
They all survive.
As reader Nicola Prigg pointed out in this blog’s comment section, the chances of guessing correctly were 1 in 4096 or 0.0244% – but your odds improved dramatically if you were able to make some educated guesses (i.e. All clues pointed to FIVE being the author of the mind wipe program; The only crew member with a reason to leave this ship is FOUR as he has a throne to recover; And come on, did you really think we’d kill someone off in the finale? Well…maybe.).
In the end, the prize goes to ceresis64:
Congratulations! I’ve sent you an email for your mailing address. And I’ve finished annotating that script!
As for the rest of you – don’t feel bad. Even the cast had a helluva time trying to figure out the answers to these various questions – something I made all the more difficult for them by keeping the identity of “the mole” a secret until the very last scene on the very last day.
And, when the time came for the big reveal, I gathered them on the bridge, like the suspects in an Agatha Christie whodunit, and tortured them a little. Check out the behind-the-scenes video (and pay extra close attention to Melissa’s reactions throughout!)…

September 5, 2015: Dark Matter behind the scenes! Filming the Android Drop – Episode #12!
Dark Matter’s first season may be over (or nearing an end in other parts of the world), but that doesn’t mean you all have to wait until next year for new material. Over the course of the next few months, I’ll be offering up behind-the-scenes insights, pics and videos of our awesome first season. Then, when we start rolling into production in late November, stay tuned to this blog for updates on Dark Matter’s spectacular second season. No spoilers, of course. Just teasers to whet your appetites – and reward you all for your amazing support.
Today, I offer up some behind-the-scenes videos of Episode #12 (aka “Android’s Day Out”), the shooting of the Android Drop.
Check it out!

That’s one helluva noisy fan!
Like Stargate, one of the trickiest aspects of production – timing the closing of the doors!

September 3, 2015: That finale…
“I think he is crazy, Joey. He makes people anxious!”
My mother halfway through watching the Dark Matter season finale.
Sorry, mom.
My sis followed up with this text: “And I have no nails left.”
Would love to open this blog up to discussion about the finale, but I’m going to hold off until next week, after our viewers across the pond have caught up. All I’ll say now is that, contrary to io9’s assumption that we just pulled the “big reveal” out of our collective asses at the last minute, it was actually something we worked towards – and oh-so-subtley set up – in the episodes leading up to the big finish. In fact, a number of fans have put together the pieces and posited some dead-on theories of the how’s and why’s. Well done!
And another ?Well done!” to our recent contest winner who correctly guessed all four questions I posited in the lead-up to the finale. I’ll be revealing the winner next week!
Also next week, I’m going to do a rewind and take you through the show’s first season run, behind-the-scenes style, offering insights, pics, and vids to accompany every episode.
Speaking of which, here are a few behind-the-scenes non-spoiler pics from that finale…
Anthony Lemke (THREE) and Melissa O’Neil (TWO) kicking back between set-ups.
Director Andy Mikita, Director of Photography Craig Wright, and actor Alex Mallari Jr. (FOUR) take in “the infirmary scene” run-thru.
Jodelle Ferland (FIVE) checks her light before heading into the dark.
Who is this masked man?
If you have any questions for me, post ’em in the comments section! I’m going to try to do a mailbag in the coming days!

September 2, 2015: Dark Matter deleted scene!
Our season 1 finale ran overlong and, as a result, we had to make some trims. One scene – a late addition dream sequence – didn’t make the final cut. While not crucial to Episode 13, it does explore two of our pre-amnesiac crew members, and sheds light on the fate of Hrothgar and co. while letting us now how that mysterious pendant came into ONE’s possession (Episode 1)…
Deleted scene Episode 13 (dream sequence):
