October 19, 2015: The Snow Monkeys’ Miracle Win! Let’s celebrate with some exclusive Dark Matter season 2 concept art!
There was the 1980 Miracle on Ice that saw a team of gutsy American amateurs best a powerful team from the USSR/
There was the Boston Red Sox 2004 defying seemingly impossible odds to rally from down 0-3 in a series to beat the heavily favored Yankees.
And now, it’s the 2015 Snow Monkeys who projected to lose by over 50 points, rallied late in Sunday night action, down 20, to upset the hitherto undefeated Fighting Hyphens (renamed Eager To Stay Employed by owner and Dark Matter VFX Supervisor Lawren Bancroft-Wilson).
Oh, they’ll be talking about this one for years to come. The victory puts my Snow Monkeys at a record of 4-2 in Fantasy Football League play with an inside track on a playoff spot.
What better way to celebrate then with a sneak peek at some amazing Dark Matter season 2 concept art compliments of Production Designer Ian Brock, Set Designer Doug Slater, and Concept Illustrator Sanford Kong.

October 18, 2015: Let’s hit the mailbag!
Answering your burning questions…
mannas7mom writes: “Whaddya mean??? Dark Matter got a second season, and presumably you did, too, or you wouldn’t be heading to Toronto. If you got a 2nd season, why can’t you move to Toronto? What was it that didn’t work out? And is that why you were shopping for an agent in LA? You know we all pick up on these things…”
Answer: Well damn, there’s no getting anything by you. In truth, I approach every season like it’s the last – or my last. Great for fans of the show because it means that, creatively, I’m not holding anything back. The show’s first season was a terrific experience. I had a great time, told the stories I wanted to tell, and we were lucky enough to get picked up for a third season. If the same holds true this second time around, you can be sure I’ll be back for a third season. Ideally, I’ll have the opportunity to bring you the entire five season arc I have planned. Just in case though, it’s always a good idea to hedge your bets. Thus my search for a new agent.
dasndanger writes: “1. How many months are you going to be living in the Bates Motel?”
Answer: I’m out of here by November 1st.
“2. What’s your mailing address now?”
Mail me at the production office c/o Prodigy Pictures.
“3. How’s Lulu’s tummy issues?”
Answer: Better.
“4. How’s your lung?”
Answer: Better?
“5. How’s mom and sis?”
Answer: Both are great.
Ponytrail writes: “In Dark Matter, what is that “trough” running down the middle of their dinning table for?”
Answer: It’s a leftovers and dirty plates/cutlery trough. What did you think it wa
Tom Gardiner writes: “1) ‘Fess up. You secretly used the Aquarium Channel on the Raza, right?”
Answer: Also the desert and arctic channels.
“2) Will you be watching Big Ass Spider (the movie, not the houseguest) any time soon?”
Answer: Probably not.
“3) What comes next for season 2?”
Answer: Next comes the building of the sets!
“3a) Is it mainly writing for now or are other processes running in tandem with it?”
Answer: We’re writing while our Production Designer, Ian Brock, and his team design and start building sets. We’re also finalizing our directors’ schedule and started auditions.
“3b) When is shooting on season 2 planned to begin and how long is it expected to last?”
Answer: Shooting will begin in mid-December and should wrap in early May.
“4) Has Jodelle given back the goggles or are they now part of her permanent wardrobe?”
Answer: She gave back THOSE goggles – but I’m sure she has her own pair.
“5) Who’s adjusting to Hell Home better, you or Akemi?”
Answer: Oh, definitely the dogs. They’re pretty chill.
“6) As someone who owns an older dog, but has always lived in the same place, how do you accustom yours to a new place and routine?”
Answer: They adjust pretty quickly on their own. No assembly required.
“7) I’ve seen a few sites saying the DVD release of season one was October 12 (not sure what country/countries), but can’t really find much information beyond that – you know, like where to buy it. I’ve not even seen any press releases, so I’m hoping you might have some insight into when I can relieve my grubby hands of this filthy cash and replace it with a shiny box of Dark Matterness.”
Answer: Hmmm, can’t help you there. Not sure of the various release dates.
shyone65 writes: “1)When does season 2 start filming?”
Answer: Mid-December.
“2)What were the last flavors of the cola tasting?”
Answer: I believe it was Ranch Dressing. Not good. Not good at all.
“3) How is Lulu doing?”
Answer: She’s doing better – but is definitely more needy in unfamiliar surroundings.
bambamfans writes: “1. Have you told everyone here to VOTE for Dark Matterfor Favourite SciFi/Fantasy show at People’s choice? You can vote multiple times.”
Answer: I have – and I’m reminding them again here. Vote for Dark Matter!
“2. Do you know if the featurettes Ivon shot that were only available on the SyFy site solely for people in the US will be available on the DVD?”
Answer: Yes, I believe they will be available on the DVD.
“3. Will the Raza become property of the Galactic Authority?”
Answer: It was at the end of season one.
“4. Are there still more past secrets that the Raza crew don’t know about themselves?”
Answer: Yes, definitely, many more secrets to be revealed.
“5. If I sent something to the studio in Toronto (like a birthday present) would you get it or is it too soon?”
Answer: No, I’ll get it.
jorie74 writes: “1) Aren’t tenants allowed to change the curtains or put up curtains in a rental space? Or did the apartment not come with a curtainrod?”
No curtain rod. Or anywhere to put a curtain rod.
“2) Would pretending the new-to-you place is an “undiscovered until now” section of the Destiny (or the Raza) help with your writing?”
Answer: Alas, no.
“3) Are you going to try and find a few culinary spots in the area you’re living in and perhaps blog about those (when not writing scripts) along with pics and/or a “pass or fail” report on them?”
Answer: I’m revisiting a number of the culinary spots I discovered last time I was in town – and, hopefully, discovering new ones. There’s a soft serve place right around the corner we’ve been meaning to check out.
“4) How are the pups taking to the new neighbourhood?”
Answer: They’ve settled in quite nicely. I’m sure they appreciate the extra walkies.
Scott writes: “!. What do you think of The Expanse? From what I’m hearing and seeing, it seems like it’s more soap-opera-y, like Ascension… and that show failed… On another note, I thought I read The Expanse was the most expensive show Syfy has produced to date, so does this mean it’s more expensive than SGU was?”
Answer: Don’t know anything about it. And, yes, definitely more expensive than SGU.
“2. What are your thoughts on the Star Trek situation? Do you think we will ever see another TV series in our lifetime, or are we pooched because of the split between Viacom and Paramount, and the fact 10+ years have passed since Enterprise ended?”
Answer: I didn’t realize there was a “Star Trek situation”. Haven’t seen the movies. To me, Star Trek will always be an awesome television series.
“3. What do you think about the “Pick and Pay” situation the CRTC is enforcing on all cable/satellite providers starting December 2016, where you can pay for individual channels instead of being forced to subscribe to bundle packaging? Do you think the CRTC’s decision played a part in Verizon deciding to offer ‘Pick and Pay’ with their Fios setup?”
Answer: I think that consumers are already picking and playing through alternate viewing streams so it’s time traditional viewing caught up.
“4. Do you agree that ‘simultaneous substitution’ sucks, when it comes to Canadian networks (CTV, Global, City) being intentionally substituted over American ones (NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX) by all cable/sat providers in Canada, thus making Canadians miss the American show promos, episode previews, and commercials?”
Answer: I really, really, REALLY HATE missing this Super Bowl commercials.
“5. I think gforce brought this up before, but… any plans for a time travel episode in the future, similar to SG1’s Window of Opportunity… with… you know… lots of humor involved?”
Answer: I can’t comment on particular episodes, but we do have some trademark SciFi stories in the works for season 2.
“6. Has anyone ever accidentally associated the name Dark Matter with something else entirely? I just recently found out there’s a movie called “A Dark Matter”, and also that the science channel has a series called “Dark Matters”. Wonder if anyone’s ever gotten confused between the three…”
Answer: Oh, all the time. There was a blurb in a local Toronto paper last year about all the productions in town. It listed our show, Dark Matter, and then proceeded to offer details on a completely different production.
Johan Backman writes: “1) Any word on when the next DM cast Q&A will be held?”
Answer: As soon as Alex Mallari Jr. answers the batch of questions we already sent his way. Head over to twitter and bug him about it!
“2) Do you know if DM season 1 will be available as Blu-ray as well? If so, when?”
Answer: I’m not sure what is being released or when. Sorry.
ceresis64 writes: “1) Directors ‘some new yet familiar faces as well’ – David Hewlett, please?”
Answer: Some new yet familiar. Alas, not David this year but I would love to find a way to get him in for an episode sooner than later.
“2) Can we have just a few ‘more’ wee teasers about Nyx, Arax Nero (love that name!), Devon, Kierken, Shaddick, Treihan, Reynaud and Misaki?”
Answer: The first three are potential allies, the next five definitely not.
“3) How many of Season 2’s scripts have you completed?”
Answer: Depends what you mean by “completed”. We have about four rough drafts.
Shinyhula writes: “So what new projects can you tell us about; short story anthologies, movie projects? I’d love to see Blumhouse put out a cool horror flick of yours.”
Answer: Funny you should mention horror – I do have a script I’ll be going out with…along with three new pilots when the time is right.
“Are there new faces in the writers room? Any familiar faces lined up to direct and/or star this season?”
Answer: Yes, yes, and, hopefully, yes.
phil_jack writes: “1.) Any news about Brad Wright or Robert C. Cooper? (Scripts, upcoming projects?)”
Answer: Brad is hard at work on several projects that we’ll hopefully be hearing about soon. As for Robert Cooper, he was in the writers’ room with us and is, no doubt, hard at work on his script.
“2.) Was Anthony Lemke your first choice for the role of “Three”? (brilliant job)”
Answer: Yep. Anthony ws a slam dunk for the role.
“3.) Do you have any former Stargate actor in mind to for an upcoming role in season 2?”
Answer: Yes. I actually wrote the role for this individual. Hopefully, it all works out.
Ponytail writes: “Where is our Alex Mallari Jr Q&A? Did I miss it?”
Answer: This is a question for Alex!
Keith writes: “Did a large chunk of season one’s budget go towards building the sets?”
Answer: Indeed it did. A large chunk went toward our standing sets: the bridge, corridors, quarters, infirmary, mess, underbelly.
“Will an equally large chunk go towards more new sets for season two, or will it translate into more guest actors / location shoots / special effects?”
Answer: I’d say that, in season 2, it will be a more even distribution. The guest stars will be bigger, then visual effects more spectacular.
Elminster writes: “Is Robert going to do some writing for you???”
Answer: In fact, he is.

October 17, 2015: Fan hello’s! Dark Matter Season 1 DVD Reviews!
First off, a little something I received today from Zoie Palmer (Dark Matter‘s Android) who is at Dallas Comic Con meeting her fans – some of who, it turns out, are Stargate AND Dark Matter fans AND read the blog!
Thanks for the hello’s. Wish I could’ve been there! Next time you see Jason Momoa, ask him to tell you the story of how he scared the crap out of two would-be burglars in Vancouver.
Bring the crew of The Raza home with you in this 3 disc DVD set which includes all 13 episodes plus special features including the infamous mole reveal!
Here’s what reviewers have to say about Dark Matter‘s first season:
“Overall then, a series which opens intriguingly and ends with the possibility for danger pushed to cinematic levels. If you’ve ever enjoyed a slice of TV sci-fi, or just love a good drama with winning characters set in an engaging environment – you’ll find plenty to enjoy and perhaps even obsess over here.”
http://www.denofgeek.com/dvd-bluray/dark-matter/37293/dark-matter-season-1-dvd-review
“The series is action-packed, but also has a gripping way with cliff-hanger endings, meaning almost every week ends with some sort of hook that makes the show not just a good weekly watch but a good binge too. In fact, it’s exactly the sort of show one used to look to Syfy for back when it was Sci-fi, and it’s great to have this sort of thing back on the air.”
http://culttvtimes.com/dark-matter-season-one-u-k-dvdout-now/
“As a first season, DARK MATTER has set a good basis in the direction it’s going, paving a clear way for something significantly unique and new while keeping an identity to the genre. There is more than enough mystery with the memory loss sub-plot and even displays some nice action set pieces.”
http://www.screenrelish.com/2015/10/11/dark-matter-season-one-review/
“From the pens of the dynamic duo who brought us such great Sci-Fi as Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and SGU Stargate Universe Joseph Malzlozi and Paul Mullie, they bring us a 13 part series that stands out as a riveting show.”
http://www.road-rash.co.uk/dvd/dark-matter-dvd-review/#.ViGrdbQ-BmB
“Much the shows humor comes from a combination of the Android and Anthony Lemke as Three aka Marcus Boone. Boone starts off as the most out of control of the characters and also the least sympathetic. This kind of changes by the mid season point where we get a glimpse of his softer side.”
http://scifipulse.net/in-review-dark-matter-dvd-set/
“Dark Matter is stronger than its opening would suggest, becoming a more intricate web with each episode.”

October 16, 2015: The Birthday Highlights!
1200 – 12:50 a.m.: Watch double episode of Million Dollar Listing: New York, one of Akemi’s favorites. She’s particularly fond of Fredrik and even purchased his audio book. I, on the other hand, am with Team Ryan.
3:00 a.m.: Wake up with a recurring cough and congestion. A progression of that lung thing? Benilyn is my friend.
6:00 a.m.: Lulu starts dry-heaving. I am UP and she is OFF the bed – just in time. She has been restless all night. Akemi says she ate something “yellow” off the elevator floor. Mustard? Ecstasy? She is seems agitated so I massage her back until she falls asleep, some 45 minutes later.
7:00 a.m.: Start checking and responding to birthday messages!
8:00 a.m.: I jump out of bed to answer my first birthday call! Only to discover it’s my alarm going off. Time to wake up.
9:30 a.m.: Get reacquainted with Toronto traffic.
10:00 a.m.: Find THIS sitting in my office compliments of Alice and co. in the production office…
Inside = a chocolate selection from Soma, Toronto’s premier chocolatier.
11:30 a.m.: Return to the apartment with a bunch of stuff I’d been storing in my office since I left town = socks, doggy beds and, for Akemi, the “humidifighter” (“It fights for humidity!” – Akemi). I manage to ease the car into my extra-tight parking spot.
Fits like a glove! Of course because the doors won’t open, the only way in and out is through the sun roof.
12:30 p.m.: Lunch and gelato with my former Toronto nemesis, Tara Yelland.
I couldn’t imagine two people having more fun!
3:00 p.m.: Pass out on the bed and nap for 30 minutes until Lulu hops up onto my chest and then, when I fail to respond, sneezes on my face.
5:00 p.m.: Early dinner at Buca Yorkville
My favorite dish was the tiramisu – which I was too busy eating to photograph.
6:30 p.m.: Take the dogs for a walk, field some phone calls, update the blog and then the night is WIIIIIIDE OPEN? How shall we cap off my birthday celebrations? A trip to the CN Tower where we’ll take in a breathtaking view of the city? Drinks at an upscale bar? Dancing? Nah. We’ll probably just watch another two episodes of Million Dollar Listing: New York.

October 15, 2015: Lulu demonstrates her distaste for gravel!
“Oooh, is she old?”asked the fellow dog owner, looking on as Lulu trudged her way along the gravel.
“No,”I told him, “just dramatic.”
I swear, she only does this when she’s at the dog park. She otherwise walks perfectly fine…
Further proof that the “cleaning” of our apartment prior to our arrival was less than thorough, I discovered this in the freezer today –
Varied mystery meats! I’m, admittedly, and adventurous eater, but I even I have to draw the line somewhere…
Hey! Speaking of eating, look at who Akemi and I had dinner with tonight.
It’s belated birthday boy and former Stargate writer, director, Executive Producer Robert C. Cooper! What’s HE doing in town?

October 14, 2015: Back in Toronto!
Wow! A pretty exciting time to be in Toronto. The Blue Jays just clinched a spot in the American League Championship Series. It was an amazing, hard-fought victory. And these were the highlights…
Oh, right. I forgot. My place in Toronto only offers the most basic of channel selections. I may not get the sports stations or food network or AMC, but I do get The Aquarium Channel. Look at that blue fish go!
Although it’s not all bad. After a long and exhausting cross-country flight with the dogs (on which they were mostly well-behaved) we were finally able to settle in to a place that, if not exactly clean (Akemi, who complained that the dishes “smelled funny”, ended up spending an hour wiping down the counters, refrigerator, and washing the cutlery), WAS cleaned out of the pantry supplies left behind by the previous tenant. Well, mostly. The landlord was kind enough to gift us a whole garbage bag full of expired herbs and spices –
Also the former tenant/landlord’s prescription medication. What’s Champix? Well, whatever it is, it should be taken twice daily with plenty of water.
Oh, they DID end up picking up a dust pan – which they helpfully left propped up on the wall, right next to the pile of spilled dirt.
So, when WAS the last time this place was actually cleaned? Hard to say but, in the interim, THIS big-ass spider had time to spin one equally big-ass web in the living room –
Because Bubba is suffering from separation anxiety, and because I didn’t want to miss a second of that exciting baseball game hearing my neighbours’ reactions to that exciting baseball game, we elected to eat in…
Which allowed us to break in the already-well-broken-in dining room table.
So, how was YOUR day?
Hey, it’s time for another mailbag! Post your questions in the comment section and I’ll field them this weekend!

October 13, 2015: And that’s a wrap on Vancouver 2015!
Our last day in Vancouver for the foreseeable future was marked by a lot of frenzied dashing about driving. Did some banking, visited a couple of book shops, picked up some replacement light bulbs and baby Gravol for the dogs. For my final Vancouver lunch, it was tacos at La Taqueria. Damn, I’m going to miss that place.
It’s an early turn-in for us tonight as we’ll be up bright and early dark and early tomorrow morning well before the crack of dawn. Out of bed at 4:30 a.m., picked up at 5:20 a.m., flying out at 7:00 a.m. Crazy, I know, but I’m hoping the dogs will be nice and tired for the flight. They’re usually pretty good so…fingers crossed.
Just received word from the production office that the landlord/realtor of our crap apartment in Toronto –
is unwilling to let us out of the lease. They’re also unwilling to install blinds or dressers. So, in the event we can’t work something out and I’m stuck with the place, I will be posting the full address of this condo from Hell on this blog as I highlight it’s hilarious lowlights in regular instalments. In the event this place goes back on the market, a quick google search will bring up ACTUAL photos of the place…along with an honest tenant’s appraisal.
Today, I also bid adieu to my friend Vancouver Ivon who is leaving the city after fifteen years to move back to his home town of Toronto. Granted, since he’s a Consulting Producer on Dark Matter, I’ll no doubt be spending more time with him than I’ll care to this coming season, but it will nevertheless be sad to think I’ll have to make my own slow cooked pork tacos next football season. The end of an era.
Speaking of which – a blog dedication to Vaun Wilmott and the rest of his Dominion team for two ferociously unique seasons of television. And another dedication to Dominion fandom. Fight on, Angel Corps!

October 12, 2015: Travel plans!
Akemi: I can’t believe we’re going back to Toronto.
Me: Neither can I.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, will mark our last day in Vancouver for the foreseeable future. Our last day to enjoy the city and all the comforts of home.
Can’t say I’m actually looking forward to Wednesday. We’ll be up at 5:00 a.m. so that we can catch our 7 a.m. flight. The dogs, of course, will spend the better part of the day – roughly six and a half hours – in their cramped little pet carriers, hopefully calm, comfortable, and crap-free. And, when we finally arrive in Toronto, we’ll be settling in to this place:
Hoo boy!
Back in early 2015, when the wheels were in motion to get the series green lit, there was talk of producing the show in Vancouver. When we finally got that green light, it was bittersweet news for me because, while on the one hand I finally had my own show, on the other hand I had to travel to the other side of the country to produce it. I had, admittedly, mixed feelings about moving to Toronto at the time but it was my show and I told myself that, ultimately, I could just do the one season.
We wrote the scripts, prepped, cast the series, then rolled into production. And – surprise surprise – I had a great GREAT time working with some of the most talented, kindest, down-to-earth people you could ever hope to spend time with. We were well-prepared (with 12 of 13 scripts written before we went to camera), got to tell the stories we wanted to tell, had an unbelievable cast that brought the characters to life and an equally unbelievable crew that brought the world of Dark Matter to life. The fact that everyone was so damn good at their jobs ensured that the production ran smoothly – and the money ended up onscreen. That first season was hard work, but incredibly satisfying. And, most importantly, a lot of fun. “If this show gets a second season,”I remember my writing partner, Paul, telling me at the time, “you should just sell the house and move to Toronto.” And I actually considered. And when the time finally came to pack up and head west after the show wrapped, I was genuinely sorry to leave.
Well, while a permanent Toronto move is no longer in the cards, I nevertheless do look forward to reconnecting with my Dark Matter teammates and starting work on the show’s second year. Whereas season one was a slow burn that gradually peeled the onions on our characters’ backstories, building on the mystery and suspense as it drove toward a shocking finale, season two will see a more fast-paced, action-packed, sci-fi-themed narrative. It’s going to be crazy!
And, hopefully, like season 1, a lot of fun – because when it stops being fun, why bother?
Regardless of how things shake out for me in Toronto this coming year, if the production runs as smoothly as it did last season (And why shouldn’t it?), you, dear viewers, are in for one hell of treat!

October 11, 2015: Don’t know what it is, but I can tell you what it isn’t!
“Excuse me! Excuuuuuse me!”the guy in the bathrobe called out to the hospital staff. “Can I have a yogurt?” When it became clear he wasn’t getting one, he sighed, strolled into an examination room, turned off the lights and went to sleep. There he snoozed peacefully away – until he was chased out by a doctor about twenty minutes later.
As the elderly lady in the gurney started to regale a nurse with tales of her recurring bowel obstructions, I checked my phone. I’d already been there three hours – but, in that time, I’d accomplished quite a bit: read three graphic novels, one novel novel, taken a blood test, an EKG, and a chest x-ray. Seemingly out of tests, and reading materials, there was nothing left to do but wait. And avoid eye contact with the bearded starer roaming the hall.
I’d been suffering from what I’d termed “a sore lung” for going on almost two weeks, a dull ache that manifested whenever I took a deep breath – or lay down for any extended period of time. When the initial visits to my doctor yielded no definitive results, I decided to get a second opinion. Dr. Google’s findings were more expansive and, potentially, more dire, running the gamut from strains and pleurisy to embolisms and cancer. And so, suitably terrified, I decided to get a third expert’s opinion.
The blood work, EKG, and x-ray came back all clear. I wasn’t suffering from any of the more tragic possibilities. And it was unlikely I was suffering from a blood clot.
Hang on. Unlikely?
Well, yes. The doctor informed me that the only way to know for sure would be to do a ct scan, but he wasn’t convinced I needed one and it would mean being subjected to more radiation. I gave it some thought and decided to what the hell. It had worked out for Peter Parker and Bruce Banner. Besides, I had a few hours to kill before I had to wake up and put that turducken in the oven.
They hooked me up to an i.v., pumped the blue liquid through my veins, and ran me through the humming machine like a leftover dinner on sensor reheat. And, when all was said and done – another all clear. I was perfectly healthy! Except for the whole sore lung thing. I still don’t know what THAT is.
Anyway, having received the clean bill of heart health, I was able to enjoy THIS today…
[Thanks to Rob for the charcuterie platter, Ivon for the pie and ice cream, Tio for the laughs, and Akemi for EVERYTHING else including the turducken she popped in the oven at 5:30 a.m. to ensure it was cooked in time for lunch.]
After all is said and done, I’m glad I went and got checked out. I can finally rest easy knowing it isn’t anything serious.
Instead, I’ll just worry about the alarming amount of radiation I was subjected to.

October 10, 2015: Dark Matter clues!
These voice-overs were intended for a late season episode, but didn’t make the final cut. The dialogue hints at some possible future storylines and backstory elements. Can you make out what is being said?
