July 19, 2022: Foodly updates and such!
My favorite Toronto ramen…
The garlic ramen with thin noodles and extra pork chasu from Midori Ramen.
Lettage, a curious lettuce/cabbage hybrid.
Akemi making enough cole slaw to feed a small army.
I prefer my cheeses super runny.
Whenever we go out to eat, Akemi comes prepared with her handy take-home container.
The Philly Cheesesteak, Ryan’s Way (sautéed steak, provolone, cheese whiz, griddled green pepper and onions, crispy onions, green onion, hot peppers) from When the Pig Came Home.
Akemi’s chocolate mousse.
Akemi’s chocolate ganache squares.
Musu Osaka buns!
Suspicious character.
Akemi, Japanese-style.
Joe, Japanese-style.

July 18, 2022: The Horror Marathon continues!
La nuit a dévoré le monde (2018)
After waking up in an apartment the night after a raging party, Sam comes face to face with his new reality: an army of zombies has invaded the streets of Paris, and he is one of the lone survivors.

Thoughts: A solitary, slow-burn, introspective take on the zombie genre with bursts of visceral scares. There are touches of humor, a late unsurprising twist, and the whole is anchored by a protagonist who is, ultimately, a victim of his own making.
3.5/5
A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014)
Residents of a worn-down Iranian city encounter a skateboarding vampire who preys on men who disrespect women.

Thoughts: Art-house horror, stylish but slow, striking but ultimately hollow.
3/5
Happy Death Day (2018)
A college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again, in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer’s identity.

Thoughts: A great concept, well-executed. Very enjoyable – minus a few minor logical inconsistencies.
4/5
Willow Creek (2013)
A couple campout in the woods to capture firsthand evidence of Bigfoot.

Thoughts: Slow. And adds nothing new to the found footage sub-genre.
2/5

I’ll be dropping by. Hope to see you there!
Some goodies from the Stargate vault….
The "spicy" sandwiches at fast food restaurants aren't spicy for the simple reason that these restaurants cater to customers who can't eat spicy sandwiches – but order them anyway.

Just saw a trailer so bad that I am genuinely concerned for the execs who green lit it.

Just found a VISA and dropped it off at the issuing bank.
Months ago, found a VISA that ended up belonging to someone in my building.
Last year, found a driver's license and tracked down the owner online. She was disappointed I hadn't found her phone too.
I can only find so much.

This sounds kind of weird to me – but, to be fair, I'm admittedly old fashioned and out of touch. https://t.co/Jcwl2HCLZJ

July 14, 2022: The Horror Marathon continues!
The Devil’s Backbone (2001)
Soon after his arrival at an ominous orphanage, a young boy uncovers the secrets of the school, including the youthful ghost that wanders its grounds.

Thoughts: Wonderfully atmospheric, poetic and poignant. It’s a ghost story that leans into artfulness of its narrative over scares, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. Great.
4/5
Berberian Sound Studio (2012)
An Englishman is hired to create sound effects for a horror film studio in 1970s Rome, but the job ends up taking a heavy toll on his mental health.

Thoughts: An at times intense and unnerving tribute to the Italian giallo films of the 70’s that employs sound to great effect, ultimately in service of a meta wank that goes off the rails in its final act.
3/5
Thelma (2017)
A college student starts to experience extreme seizures while studying at a university in Oslo, Norway. She soon learns that the violent episodes are a symptom of inexplicable, and often dangerous, supernatural abilities.

Thoughts: Incredible performances in this character-driven coming-of-age tale that proves both haunting and heartbreaking. The horror is a slow build, more surreal than visceral, but some of the imagery is shockingly inventive. Ultimately ambiguous, but satisfying nevertheless.
