Bag of Bones by Stephen King (Book Covers I Like)

I still remember when the review copy for Bag of Bones by Stephen Kingshowed up at my front door. This was King’s first book with his new publisher, Scribner, and I was extremely excited about how they were marketing his work.

How Do You Deal With Reviews?

A collector on the Cemetery Dance forum asked: “Do reviews impact/affect you differently between your CD gig and your author gig? Or do you just shrug these off for both?”

Typewriter

I basically have two rules when it comes to reading reviews of my own work:

1) If the review is good, don’t pat yourself on the back; the reviewer was probably just feeling generous.

2) If the review is bad, for the love of God, DO NOT RESPOND unless your response is NOT going to make things worse.

Guess what? When it comes to...

Scenes from the Cemetery Dance office: The Dark Man by Stephen King Review Copies

The review copies forThe Dark Man by Stephen King arrived on Friday. Also pictured is the interoffice proof that is not for review or distribution — it was produced before we had the final cover artwork and was solely meant to give us a better feel for how the final book would look when printed, so we could adjust the pages and artwork as needed.

Fate and The Exorcist: An In-depth Interview with William Peter Blatty

Many readers asked if my 10,000 word interview with William Peter Blatty from the Cemetery Dance Publications special edition of The Exorcist/Legion would ever be available again, so I’m pleased to report it’s been republished as an eBook for just 99 cents:

Author Joe Konrath on Writing and Publishing and his 10,000 Hours

Last year I interviewed Joe Konrath, but somehow that interview never got posted. Most of this is still very relevant, but keep in mind that a lot can change in a year. Still, there’s good stuff in here for all kinds of writers and I didn’t want thatto go to waste:

Brian James Freeman: I’ve heard a lot of very large numbers thrown around over the years, buthow many books/stories/words did you really write before you sold your firstnovel?

Joe Konrath:I wrote nine novels before selling Whiskey So...

A Pessimistic Customer Emails Me About The “Pavement Pizza” Book

I saved this email from December 2011 because I love how passionate our collectors are and yet this email might be one of the more pessimistic messages I’ve ever received after a production update:

Hi Folks,

I do not normally do this, but I just saw what you are proposing as the covers for this book.

I am very disappointed. It will devalue the book, it literally looks like pavement pizza, I’m going to cry, I buy these books because they are usually works of art, but this …

Can you go back to the...

The Dark Man by Stephen King featured in USA TODAY

I guess it’s to be expected because it’s Stephen King, but I’m still thrilled when a project I’ve worked on for the last six months is featured over at USATODAY.COMin their Book Buzz section:

“Beware, for the Dark Man cometh! That is, the book The Dark Man by Stephen King, reigning master of scary tales. Cemetery Dance Publications will publish a hardcover edition of the title on July 30. It’s a change of pace for the author: The Dark Man is an 88-page poem featuring artwork by Glenn Chadbourn...
