ALL THE FIENDS OF HELL - EARLY REVIEWS

ALL THE FIENDS OF HELL lands today.

A story I first attempted in 2018, tried in four mediums, and eventually completed in May 2023. A long gestation. More of an alien parasite than a chest burster. But, at last, it walks among us.The early responses from readers are most welcome and hugely appreciated. So, on publication day, and as publicity director of Ritual Limited, I'm going to share a selection of reactions from some generous Bookstagrammers on Instagram:

"Readers who love aliens, apocalyptic narratives, existential dread, and cosmic horror will devour this book" @the_wandering_reader

"a terrifying and relentless journey to survive the alien horrors that have descended on the night of bells." @castanedawrites Castenada

"I was completely absorbed into this nightmarish hellscape of alien terror, a truly terrifying read, I think this may be my favourite Nevill so far!" @thevampireslibrary

"the perfect combination of all of my favorite alien stories, creating a fresh new take on the genre and solidifying itself as one of the scariest to be penned." @adamsfall

As far as alien invasion stories go, All the Fiends of Hell must be one of the most unique, and terrifying - @robs_horror_room

"this story took over my life for three days. I felt invested in these characters and their world from the very first page to the last" - @belladonnabooks Books

"I became emotionally attached in a way I seldom do in horror novels and this made it all the more heartbreaking and unsettling." @evelovesbooks_travel_art

"Rarely since Cormac Mccarthy’s The Road have I been soaked through so thoroughly with impending doom" @book_guy_si

"Think total immersive apocalyptic horror experience in a book." @ladyvampmanor

"His writing pulled me deep within the story and at times I felt overwhelmed by the horror, despair and hopelessness of a world invaded by a species hellbent on complete annihilation of the human race." @oneconstantreader

"Scary & demented as hell but I honestly had one night I woke up in tears after I finished." @brokenbinding13

A novel of alien horror from the author of Cunning Folk, The Reddening, The Ritual, No One Gets Out Alive.

My thanks to all readers who call down the Fiends!

ALL THE FIENDS OF HELL PUBLICATION DAY. THE INVASION BEGINS.

Greetings from beneath the red sky, my Fiends. The bells are ringing the changes on civilisation. Man's stewardship of the earth is being brought to an end by the Horrors! You can't see them, though they have a weird smell and if you listen hard, you may hear them. When the light changes, you will see vestiges of them. Then, even more of what crawls the earth can be detected. If you're still breathing at that point, then something even bigger and more horrifying is imminent.

Or, at least, this all happens in my new novel.

ALL THE FIENDS OF HELL lands today. The advance reconnaissance preceding the invasion, took the form of a limited edition hardback. 600 marines, now sold out. The infantry follows today, in successive waves of editions. Trade paperback, audio book and eBook officially put boots on the ground today in online stores, some high street retailers and libraries.

A little more about the book:

The red night of bells heralds global catastrophe. Annihilation on a biblical scale.

Seeing the morning is no blessing. The handful of scattered survivors are confronted by blood-red skies and an infestation of predatory horrors that never originated on earth. An occupying force intent on erasing the remnants of animal life from the planet.

Across the deserted landscapes of England, bereft of infrastructure and society, the overlooked can either hide or try to outrun the infernal hunting terrors. Until a rumour emerges claiming that the sea may offer an escape.

Ordinary, unexceptional, directionless Karl, is one of the few who made it through the first night. In the company of two orphans, he flees south. But only into horrifying revelations and greater peril, where a transformed world and expanding race of ravening creatures await. Driven to the end of the country and himself, he must overcome alien and human malevolence and act in ways that were unthinkable mere days before.

A novel of alien horror from the author of Cunning Folk, The Reddening, The Ritual, No One Gets Out Alive and the four times winner of the August Derleth Award for Best Horror Novel.

ALL THE FIENDS OF HELL will be available in four formats - a limited edition hardback (exclusively from www.adamlgnevill.com), trade paperback, eBook and audiobook. PUBLICATION DATE: APRIL 2ND, 2024.

More information about my books, signed and personalised books, my monthly newsletter, and a free eBook are available at: www.adamlgnevill.com

"A broad, electric, and brutal story that goes for the throat with no remorse"

ALL THE FIENDS OF HELL - EARLY REVIEWS

The limited edition hardback edition of All the Fiends of Hell sold out a couple of weeks back, and some early readers have already posted reviews. Mercifully, they're kind, so I hope the first reactions augur well ahead of the publication invasion, April 2nd.

A huge thank you and two horned salute to all who have read and reviewed the book. It's genuinely much appreciated.

[Follow the links for the full reviews].

'Highly recommended and a magnificent change of pace from one of the Britain’s finest horror writers' - Tony Jones, Gingernuts of Horror

'Can't recommend it enough, especially if you love apocalyptic fiction' - Happy Goat Horror

'The book itself is an excellent and exciting read, and the devastated world Nevill presents is incredibly rich ... There’s not a weak link among the characters, and the monsters of this story are some of the most interesting I’ve encountered in recent fiction. All the Fiends of Hell is a strong entry in Nevill’s catalog, and an ideal entry point for new readers.' Vogue Horror

''All the Fiends of Hell' by Adam Nevill is one of the bleakest books you'll ever read. A red sky approaches. Glass breaks. The horrors descend. And all you can think is, when will we die? Masterful.' Steve Stred.

'As far as alien invasion stories go, All the Fiends of Hell must be one of the most unique, and terrifying works ever committed to paper' - Rob's Horror Room - Instagram

'I am not exaggerating when I say this story took over my life for three days. I felt invested in these characters and their world from the very first page to the last' - Belladonna Books - Instagram

AUTHOR INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL WERTENBERG - PARTS 2 & 3

In parts 2 and 3, over at his channel, Michael and I continue our chat about my horrors, publishing choices and even the fate of horror. We also cover the visceral origins of The Reddening, and ponder how disturbing horror can be.

First interview I've done in a long time, mainly due to capacity, so we covered a lot of unhallowed ground. A few recommendations emerge from me. More cat action too!

NEW AUTHOR INTERVIEW, HOSTED BY MICHAEL WERTENBERG

I've also been in conversation with Michael Wertenberg and the first part of my gibbering, digressing and rambling, can be endured over at his YouTube channel. In the first part we cover the origins of 'All the Fiends of Hell', but there's also discussion about publishing, cover art, readers' reactions, writing during lockdown, my disappointments and satisfactions with my own books, the allure of emptiness, and childhood daydreams that found their way into later stories ...I think his cat also makes an appearance at some point, which might be the best bit. But, it's been a while since I've taken an interview and I really enjoyed talking to Michael. I'm enormously grateful for his time and interest.

MY NOVELS RANKED BY MICHAEL WERTENBERG

Michael Wertenberg has ranked my novels according to his tastes on his YouTube channel. He's been an appreciative reader of my books for a while. Someone that I would classify as an ideal reader. And his taste, like mine, leans to adult horror and the literary.

Curiously, however, I see few midships and patterns in the way that readers rank my books in order of their preferences. Mostly, I'm just relieved they get read, and talked about. But, with the exception of The Ritual most often being cited as the most common favourite, and Lost Girl being the least favourite, reader preferences vary widely enough for me to struggle to discern a pattern. I've also seen the Ritual/Lost Girl preference inverted.

Even this example is a result of variables - chiefly, the way the books are published. The Ritual has been out longer, is often core stock, and has been read more widely, and there is a film. Lost Girl, however, has hardly touched bookshops on the high street. I've only ever seen it in a handful of bookshops. And it doesn't look like a horror novel either.

To be clear, writing a novel is an ordeal, so I only attempt it when really compelled by the idea of a story. This can lead to some strange offerings, but following trends wouldn't work for me. So, I don't crowd please, or have one of my eyes on charts or literary fashion. But, despite the fact that I couldn't change what I am writing, I am interested in what readers think.

And as a keen collector of data, I'm never sure what to make of this very mixed trend of reader preferences, but my instincts tell me that a lack of consistency in reader favouritism across my range is a good sign, as there is an even split of favourites selected across the whole range of titles. This way, the author avoids the accusation of his "early stuff was better". Michael's favourite book gives me a great deal of satisfaction.

Also, what I do find encouraging, is that my books that more clearly present themselves as horror, tend to be more popular with readers. This is why I've always believed that, from a publishing perspective, aiming for a wider general adult readership, by removing the "taint" of horror, from a horror novel, is flawed. As is giving horror imagery to a book that is not horror. That was once endemic. Horror has a huge audience but it doesn't tend to buy books in Smiths or ASDA. I digress.

I'm never entirely comfortable, either, with rankings and hierarchies of books, due to the subjectivity (taste, sophistication, experience, education, even literacy) involved - though my books  often feature in all kinds of lists and rankings online. But, despite having reservations about their general value, I am fascinated by them. A conundrum. But, if you get sufficient momentum as an author, you will be lauded just as easily as you will be denounced as an incompetent fraud. So, the readers that I tend to pay attention to are the ideal readers who have read most or all of my books, and who are well read in the field. Important people. To me. Like Michael.

Anyway, thank you, Michael, for your thoughts and for spending so much time on this video.
