Synopsis:
It’s been three years since Micah’s spouse, Cat, passed away at the age of thirty-six. In the process of cleaning his house, Micah discovers a series of letters Cat hid before he died, in which he made one request: that Micah empty his life of Cat as a way of moving on. Micah has been able to work through his sorrow, but he’s unable to fulfill Cat’s last wish. He can’t see a way past his loneliness despite all the caring people around him.
Enter two new friendships. Jude, Micah’s vivacious new coworker, brings joy back into his life. But she has a big secret about her family, and the truth will rock Micah’s understanding of who she is. Chris, the new minister at Cat’s former church, intrigues Micah. Unlike Jude, Chris is an open book, from his musings on theology to his work as a trans advocate and activist. His gentle manner and deep faith become safe space for Micah to open up about his loss.
Through them, Micah becomes involved with the town’s new community center, where he offers a creative writing class. Using Cat’s detailed letters, he fictionalizes their love story to share with his students. In doing so, he at last begins to sort through his complicated grief. Micah learns he doesn’t have to erase his life with Cat in order to make new memories. He may even be falling for Chris, despite their vastly different spiritual views. With a little help from family and friends, Micah will need to open his heart to love completely again.
Content warning:
This book is about loss and grief, particularly the death of a long-term partner. There are scenes of character death, funerals, and reactions to loss. There are also numerous references to spiritual trauma, lgbtqia antagonism, abusive family members, and previous suicide attempts. There are no graphic or detailed scenes of the content, however they are mentioned throughout. It may bring up strong feelings in readers. It is not meant to describe every person’s experience nor give advice.

Exclusive Excerpt:

The cat showed up the day before school started.
It was an orange tabby, strikingly handsome and as cool as you please when he perched on the stoop staring up at the open door with his unblinking green eyes. Micah had only gone to retrieve the mail, but there was the beast. It opened its mouth and offered a meow in greeting.
Amused, Micah replied, “Hello to you too.”
He reached down to see if the cat had a collar and was rewarded with a whapof the cat’s paw. Fortunately, the thing kept its claws retracted. Micah straightened up and crossed his arms, glowering down at the cat.
“No need to be so touchy. Not going to let me see who you belong to, then? Fine. Maybe if I feed you. Wait here.”
He retreated inside the house and went to the kitchen. Inside, he pulled out a bowl and rooted through the fridge to see if there was anything cat-friendly. The most he found there was last night’s leftover casserole, which didn’t seem appealing for his guest. He finally located a can of tuna in the pantry and dumped the whole thing into the bowl. As he turned around to cart it back to the stoop, he nearly dropped it when the cat leaped up on the counter next to him, purring.
“Jesus, you scared me,” Micah muttered at him. “Thought I closed the door. Please, feel free to make yourself at home.” He nudged the cat, who jumped off the counter and wound himself around Micah’s leg.
Micah set the bowl down, and the cat began eating. At last Micah could see if the thing had a collar and tag. Unfortunately, he had neither. Micah scratched him a little behind his ears. Poor thing looked like he hadn’t had a decent meal in a while—he was on the scrawny side. Friendly, though, so he must have come from a family at some point. Micah would need to ask around to see if anyone had lost their pet.
When the cat finished eating, he rubbed up against Micah’s shin, stretching and purring. Micah chuckled softly. Mr. Whiskers had certainly made it clear he intended to stay a while. No harm in that; he would be well cared-for until Micah located his real owner.
He started for the living room, and the cat followed, hopping into Micah’s lap the moment he settled down in his chair to flip on the television. Micah put his feet up, and the cat curled against his stomach, rumbling away. As Micah stroked his fur, he thought about how nice it was to have a warm body in the house again. He loved living next door to his sister-in-law, and her kids kept him busy. But it wasn’t the same as having another soul around all the time.
“Wish I knew your name,” Micah said to the cat. “I can’t just call you Cat.” He swallowed the lump in his throat and fought the tears pricking his eyes. Every little thing, it seemed, brought up his long-gone spouse these days.
The cat placed his paw on Micah’s cheek where the tear tracked its way down. He head-butted Micah, still purring. Sorrow turned to laughter as the cat’s whiskers tickled Micah’s chin before the animal settled back down with his tail curled around him. Keeping one hand on the cat’s back, Micah flipped channels to find something—anything—which would take his mind off his grief even for a little while. Before he knew it, both he and the cat were fast asleep.

Countdown to My Zombie Wedding Release - Day Six!

What would My Zombie Wedding be without...well, the wedding? Here's a short taste of Kit and Edward's special day.

It wasn’t an enormous wedding, at least in terms of the number of people attending—for which I was supremely grateful—but both Kit and I would be well represented.
While neither of us was the ‘bride’ or ‘groom’, we’d originally discussed my father walking Kit down the aisle—until my dad realized that would leave me standing, alone, at the front of the room with everyone’s eyes on me. Just the thought had made me break out in a cold sweat, so Kit and I had decided to walk up together. Let the marriage commissioner and Mariel stand there by themselves for a few minutes.
“Are you ready?” Kit asked.
“I’m ready.” And I was. I didn’t feel nervous—well, not more than my usual baseline nervousness whenever I have to perform in any way.
I held his hand and we walked down the aisle, past our friends and family. There were no zombies—or other undead creatures—besides the one I was marrying. And Boo, of course, who was pacing in his cloth-bedecked kennel.

Kit and I had written our own vows in secret, so we’d each hear the other’s for the first time during the ceremony. Some of the audience—the ones who didn’t know Kit’s secret—might have been a little confused by the portion of mine where I promised not to control him, but I’d never meant any words more in my life.

Countdown to My Zombie Wedding Release - Day Five!

This is the story of how Edward’s ex-boyfriend, Bone, came to be. Back when the idea was to make My Zombie Boyfriend as a web comic, my wife and I wanted Edward to have an associate who worked in the morgue. Makes sense—necromancers need bodies. The web comic didn’t make it much past Edward resurrecting Kit—my fault—but we had a character design and even a few sketches for the proto-Bone (and another character, who, with slight modifications as to gender and relationship to Mariel, will be introduced in My Zombie Wedding).
Years passed. My Zombie Boyfriend demanded I write it, in novel form. The original manuscript was just over 50,000 words, and then I started publishing short stories and got distracted. By the time I was ready to look at it again, the publisher’s minimum word count for novels had gone up to 60,000 words. I needed to add...something. Lots of it.
Enter Bone.
I didn’t anticipate that he’d be such a fan favourite, but him getting such overwhelmingly positive feedback definitely helped shape his role in My Zombie Wedding—and it’s a big one. Bone fans, eat your hearts out. (Or you can eat one of Bone’s—he has two).
My wife and I knew from the beginning that Bone wasn’t human, or at least not entirely, but we never really fleshed out (heh) what he actually was.
I didn’t know. Bone wasn’t telling me. Typical. So I left it vague in My Zombie Boyfriend, and waited. Thought about tracking down my demonology book and seeing if anything jumped out at me.After it had been published, my wife was rereading My Zombie Boyfriend when she pointed out something interesting to me—how Bone addresses Edward. I thought I’d had Bone call Edward ‘Ed’ consistently, mostly just to be a dick, but she noticed several key instances where Bone actually uses Edward’s full name. She thought I’d done it on purpose (which I wish I could say I had, but I can’t. She’s always finding these happy accidents in my writing). It made her think of the fey, and the importance of names—especially true names.
Speaking of true names: Bone tells Edward that his real name is Boniface but he hates being called that and prefers going by Bone, but that’s just a cover. In reality, the opposite is true—Bone (or rather, Bein, which is Bone in Icelandic) is his actual name, Boniface is just what he uses for show when it comes to humans.
So. I knew Bone was some sort of fey creature, but not what. That’s a big place to start. Before I got out my book on demonology or Faeries by Brian Froud (a book that scared me shitless the first time I read it as a hapless nine year old, when one of my mother’s ex-girlfriends gifted it to me, along with Gnomes and Giants. Probably warped my brain forever) I started writing My Zombie Fiancé and that took me in an entirely new direction—Icelandic magic.

Without giving too much away - you'll have to read My Zombie Wedding to find out exactly what Bone is - let's just say that guided me toward finally reaching an accord with Bone about what on Earth he is. We're both very happy, and we hope you will be, too. If you have a theory about what he might be before the book comes out, I'd love to hear it!

Myths, Moons, and Mayhem - Guest Post by Carl Redlum

Werewolves and the gay experienceby Carl RedlumWerewolves are my favorite monsters, but I never understood why before writing “When the Big Moon Shines” for Myths, Moons, and Mayhem. In the movies, they often represent the darker side of a man's soul. An animal that still lives inside of us all. A carnality that must be repressed or destroyed for the good of civilization. That, to me, describes the gay experience. To be overwhelmed by the urge to seek out what society told me was pure evil. Resisting those urges caused changes in myself that I found horrifying. By giving in, I finally learned that the beast inside of me was no beast at all. That the monsters I was told to fear were simply men living their lives. That wasn't the story I'd meant to tell when I sat down to write for Myths, Moons, and Mayhem. But the story poured out of me, like it had been waiting for the right moment to emerge.

Excerpt from “When The Big Moon Shines” by Carl Redlum in Myths, Moons, and MayhemSteady chopping came from the other side of the house. The breeze streamed over the house, carrying that rich scent. Henry backed away. He didn't want to know that it was the smell of human flesh setting his brain on fire. He imagined rending a man's flesh to get at such sweet meat—but that couldn't be. The smell had to be a dear hung up and butchered. It had to be.He crept around the house one hesitant step at a time, staying deep in the brush until he glimpsed a figure through the hanging vines.A man, arms knotted with muscles and a back carpeted with reddish hair, chopped wood wearing nothing but cutoff jeans.Henry still refused to believe that a man could have such a heady scent, until the wind shifted, blowing over the man's shoulders and blasting Henry with a smell was so full and rich Henry squatted down, groaning with the desire to feed. The chopping stopped. The man looked over his shoulder. His weathered face was hidden behind a thick beard, graying on the chin.Henry ducked behind a tree, scared to breathe. A minute passed, then the chopping resumed.A new scent came on the wind, just as rich but lighter somehow. Moments later a man shouted, "God damn you, Bruce, put some clothes on.""What for?" Bruce's deeper voice scoffed.Peeking around the tree, Henry saw a businessman striding into the yard, kicking splinters of wood back into the pile. His scent was meaty and enticing, if not as strong. Probably because he didn't glisten with sweat like the half-naked hairy guy. The two discussed dinner plans—Alex, the business man, distinctly favoring pizza and beer over grilling steaks. Henry leaned back against the tree, half-listening as he breathed in more of their rich scents. It made his hands ache from the hidden claws trying to emerge. He'd never turned during the day, but the hunger had never been so strong. To keep those men safe, Henry had to stay far away. The men stopped talking.A twig snapped. Close.Henry peeked around the tree and startled. Both men peered into the woods, looking directly at him.Henry spun around and tore blindly back through the woods, dashing through sticker bushes and tangling vines until he crashed into his own backyard."Where were you?" his mother shouted from the door. "What did you do?"

Countdown to My Zombie Wedding Release - Day Four!

On Sunday I visited Mariel.
I rang her doorbell, enjoying—as I always did—the sound of the clapper hitting the cast iron bell. It was much more satisfying than an electronic chime. There was no answer, which was unusual; Mariel was almost always home during the day. As a hypnotist, she usually works evenings, and most of the time she let me know when she was scheduled to work. I called her number. Again, no response. Just as I was starting to worry, she appeared on the path between her house and the next, waving at me.
“I thought I heard something!” She motioned for me to follow her into her backyard, then stepped around the side of the house again.
She was kneeling in front of one of her plant beds when I entered the yard. She was wearing a broad-brimmed hat, a pair of canvas gardening gloves, and an apron over a brightly coloured, floral dress. “I had a feeling I would be seeing you today.”
That was just uncanny—had a ghost given her a warning, too?
Glancing up from her work in time to see my shocked expression, she laughed. “I am sorry, Edward. I was only teasing you. I did not know you would be visiting today. Oh! I still have your tarp; have you come to get it?” She inclined her head in the direction of the folded canvas.
Seeing it brought back memories of the night I’d first found Kit. I’d been looking for that tarp, so I could use it to drag his body from the park where he’d been killed to my house. I hadn’t really thought of it since then. “No, you can keep it. You’ll be needing it to cover your plants soon anyway, right?”
She gestured at the plant bed, and the pile of pulled-up plants beside her. “I am getting everything ready for winter as we speak. Care to help?”
“You’re joking, right? I wouldn’t know which of these was a weed or not. I have the opposite of a green thumb. I have a...black thumb.”
“That is true. Please, do not touch my plants.” Grinning at me, she continued her work.
I couldn’t tell why she selected some of them to uproot, while others got to remain; they all looked the same to me.
“To what do I owe the pleasure of your company, then?” she asked. The plant she held in her hand had small, round growths on its roots. I wondered if it was some sort of disease, but as she dug in the area around where she’d taken the plant from, she excavated several larger objects.
“Those are potatoes!”
Mariel sighed. “Yes, pitit mwen. Potatoes come from the ground. They do not simply appear in plastic bags at the supermarket.”
I blushed. “I-I know that! I’ve just never seen them growing before.”
She snorted, tossing a potato at me.
I actually caught it, and was very impressed with myself.
She motioned for me to put it in the basket beside her. “Clearly. I must be neglecting your education; I have taught you about herbs that will help you with your ghost busting....”
I rolled my eyes at her.
“...but I doubt that you could identify the plants they come from.”
Mariel had given me some of the herbs, already dried and looking like kitchen spices, and I’d bought the others online. I definitely had no idea what any of them had looked like when alive. “That’s...one of the reasons I’m here. Not to learn about plants!” My brain was so full of human anatomy already; if I had to add plant anatomy, it would probably give up the ghost entirely. Heh. “I was wondering...who did this job before me? Getting rid of ghosts. Helping people. I know it wasn’t you.”
“That is a very good question,” she replied, not looking up from her plants. “I was wondering when it would occur to you to ask.”
I loved when she told me I’d asked a good question. So often, I felt like I only asked her questions I should already know the answers to.
“There has not been someone filling that particular role in this city for a number of years, not since the last one died.”
My eyes widened as I imagined the last person who did exactly what I spent my nights doing dying in an epic battle against a powerful ghost.
Mariel laughed, patting my leg. “Sit down; I am tired of looking up at you. He was very old, Edward. He was not killed by ghosts.”
I sat. Phew. “What was he like?”
“I did not know him very well. Our paths seldom crossed, given the fact that I repel ghosts.” She smiled at me, flicking my arm with the long, slender leaves of the plant she was holding. “He would have liked you.”

That resonated deeply with me, made me feel like I was part of a tradition. That I was carrying on something, something that had begun before me and would continue after I died.

Countdown to My Zombie Wedding Release - Day Three!

Today is all about Pinterest! I love using Pinterest during my writing process, to give me visuals of scenes, characters, or images I'm creating, and so I can share them with readers once the book is finished. I have Pinterest boards for each of the main characters (see below) and I also have a general inspiration board for My Zombie Fiancé.

My Zombie Wedding also has a general board, which you can view a preview of here:

My Zombie Wedding

Some of the images will make more sense in the context of the book, but included are: Kit's ai tattoo, Kit and Edward's wedding outfits, and the flowers in Kit's wedding bouquet (flower symbolism, y'all).

If you'd like a bit more of a visual tour of the Undead Canadian world, here are the boards for each character:

Edward
Kit
Mariel (Edward's mentor)
Bone (Edward's ex boyfriend)
Boo (Edward's undead cat)
Winston (Kit's cat)

Countdown to My Zombie Wedding Release - Day Two!

Looking for a way to distract myself, I flipped through my notebook, double checking that I still knew how to accurately draw a few of the runes I hadn’t used yet.
The ‘moon’ stave was supposed to prevent hauntings. It was one of several staves that offered protection from the supernatural, and I hadn’t used this particular one yet. Partially because it was supposed to be drawn on a fox pelt with blood from my ring finger, and I wasn’t especially keen to do either of those things, but I wanted to be able to draw any of the staves from memory, in case I ever needed them.
I was still practicing when Kit came home.
“Finally using one of my adult coloring books?” he asked, setting his bag down and giving my forehead a kiss. “It’s relaxing, isn’t it?”
I held up a finger, indicating I needed a minute. I had to concentrate while I finished the rune; the notebook hadn’t said anything about it, but leaving a rune unfinished felt dangerous to me. Drawing the last few lines, I looked up at him. “Working on my staves, sorry. Though it is kind of relaxing.”
Kit made a face. “Kind of creepy, more like.”
“How is it creepy?” I asked.
He wrapped his arms around himself and made a shivery noise. “You know, ghosts and stuff.”I raised an eyebrow at him.
He laughed, giving me a playful nudge with his elbow. “Oh, shut up. No one likes a smartass. I’m making goulash for dinner; does that sound okay?”
“Better than being a dumbass, I guess. Goulash sounds amazing.” His food was always amazing, and I felt especially blessed that he made it for me, because he couldn’t eat more than a mouthful or two. “How did I get so lucky?”
Taking groceries out of his bag, Kit grinned at me. “You ask me that all the time, and my answer’s always the same. I guess we were just...meant to be.”
I got up and squeezed his hand. “I’m glad you feel that way.” I just wished he hadn’t had to die in order for us to be together.
“What, don’t you?”
“Of course I do. Don’t mind me; I’m just in a funny mood.”
He put his—cool, as always—hand on my forehead, frowning a little. “You do feel a little warm.” “I always feel warm to you.”
He grinned. “All right, true. But I’ve gotten pretty good at telling the difference between when you’re warm and when you’re warm. Why don’t you go lie down for a few minutes? It’ll be a while before dinner’s ready.”
“Yeah, I think I will. Thanks, Kit.” I gave his hand another squeeze, then gave him a full, lingering hug, wanting to have more contact with him.
“Not that I don’t appreciate the love, but...are you sure you’re okay? Did something happen?” He stroked a thumb down the back of my neck, soothingly, and I leaned in to him.
“I’m fine,” I reassured him, reluctantly leaving his arms after giving him a final kiss on his jaw. “Just tired.” I hated lying to him, but there was no sense in both of us being frightened of something I couldn’t even explain.
“Well, shoo. I’ll come get you when dinner’s ready.” He gave me a gentle, playful swat on the behind before turning his attention back to the meal preparation. He loved cooking—and baking, of course—and it was a shame he couldn’t enjoy much of what he made himself.
I must have been more exhausted than I’d realized; I lay down on our bed, closed my eyes, and woke to Kit telling me the food was ready.
I dimly recalled having strange dreams, but I couldn’t remember what they’d been about.

Countdown to My Zombie Wedding Release - Day One!

Any city is bound to collect restless dead. Armed with the notebook of Icelandic magic his ex boyfriend, Bone, gave him, Edward Grey has been tasked with removing troubled spirits or finding ways for the living and the dead to coexist in harmony. Between planning his wedding with his undead Canadian fiancé, Kit Ward, and his continued studies as a medical student, Edward didn’t need another commitment, but he can’t turn away people who are frightened or in danger.
A particularly vicious ghost gives Edward an ominous warning—theyre coming—and a few days later Edward’s notebook is stolen from him. While he’s attempting to find it, he and his mentor, Mariel, are confronted by a very powerful necromancer and barely escape with their lives.
On the run, Edward is pursued everywhere he goes, until the necromancers following him manage to capture Kit.

Edward’s hunt for his kidnapped fiancé will take him to the underworld and beyond.

The piece of music Edward can't remember the name of is Chopin's Nocturne No. 2 in E flat Major. I struggled a bit to come up with Edward's wedding music - I considered Victor's Piano Solo from The Corpse Bride (one of my favourite pieces of music) but my wife and I decided it was too sombre for a wedding - even Edward's wedding. We decided Chopin was the way to go, and Edward having a nocturne seemed perfect. I wanted Kit's wedding song to be modern, but still harmonious with Edward's music. My wife is a cellist and told me about several cello groups that play modern music. As soon as I saw "We Found Love" and looked at the lyrics, I knew that was the one! As for the other two pieces on this playlist - the Can-Can and In the Hall of the Mountain King...remember the last line of the blurb, about the underworld? I can't give away too much, but let's just say...they're related.

The Dragon's Gift, A Lesbian Tale - Angora Shade

Curl up this Fall and get your Halloween vibes going! "Choose Your Pleasure: The Dragon's Gift, A Lesbian Tale" is releasing October 11th, 2017!

In this unique title, you become the main character, the story design yours to create. In addition to the original story thread, there are multiple new pathways to choose from, five different love interests, and a dozen possible endings. Will you find a happily ever after, a content existence, or a situation that completely surprises you? The choice is yours.
"You," the college student, have been in love with Maxine as long as you can remember, but Maxine is straight, isn't she? Despite feeling you have little chance, you sit through Maxine’s latest theatre performance about a dragon to show your never ending support as her best friend. Besides, Maxine’s promise of a surprise for you following the show has piqued your interest. But what happens at the show? Do you bump into an old flame, meet a busty beauty, connect with a curly haired stranger, lose your sanity, or curl up next to the love of your life? In the dark, under the stage, inside a restroom or a bar, the allure and desire for a happy ending is within reach... Choose wisely.

This book contains graphic descriptions of intimacy and is intended for an adult audience.

Angora Shade is an American author living in what she lovingly refers to as "Sheep Shit Nowhere" Europe. In an attempt to add some spice to her small town life, Ms Shade began writing explicit erotica as a form of entertainment. Exploring the boundaries of acceptable sexual literature, she often seeks to create stories that not only entertain others, but also expose and push against the negative stigma surrounding sex in modern day society. She believes that sex, in literature, art, personal thought, and physical nature, should be celebrated and expressed freely and as easily as any God given freedom. Her favorite themes in writing include revenge, self discovery, alternative materials for love play/bdsm, as well as anything that produces a good tingle, sizzle, or laugh. When not writing, Ms Shade enjoys red wine, travel, dancing, classic cartoons, baking, and creating fine art.
