Want To Change History? Here’s How:

Screen Shot 2013-03-21 at 10.35.49 AMAs I navigate this unprecedented time of life, my therapist suggested I read James Hollis’Finding Meaning In The Second Half of Life.

It has shaken my world. In a much needed way.

Hollis suggests we can change history (and our own lives) by this simple exercise.

Unconditionally affirm our children by saying these words to them. I wish to say it now to my children (Paige and Lauren) with all my heart and soul. I wish I had known to say and live it out to both of them and write it down for them...

10 Best Kept Secrets Unknown To Mankind

Kapari Beach

Kapari Beach

Here are my ten best kept secrets unknown (mostly) to mankind. In no particular order.

1. The wineries in Bandol — The Bandol wine region in Provence, Southern France may be one of the best kept secrets in the world. While Burgundy and Bordeaux get all the press, the small independent winemakers in Bandol make exquisite reds themselves. The Mourverdre grape is cultivated here like no other place on earth. And the wines…oh, the wines, are big, flavorful and exquisite.

The next time...

My Skylights – What Are Yours?

The Skylight

You were the one for skylights. I opposed

Cutting into the seasoned tongue-and-groove

Of pitch pine. I liked it low and closed,

Its claustrophobic, nest-up-in-the-roof

Effect. I liked the snuff-dry feeling,

The perfect, trunk-lid fit of the old ceiling.

Under there, it was all hutch and hatch.

The blue slates kept the heat like midnight thatch.

But when the slates came off, extravagant

Sky entered and held surprise wide open.

For days I felt like an inhabitant

Of that house where the man si...

Reasons I’m Thankful Today

ThankfulnessWhen one goes through any type of suffering, choices must be made.

We choose either to walk a journey of self absorption or to walk a journey of thankfulness.

On the first mile of running yesterday, I realized my mind was consumed with thoughts of bitterness, anger and questions of why. I literally stopped in my tracks.

And shouted out loud, “No!, I will not continue to let these thoughts consume me. I choose to be thankful.”As tears came, I screamed it louder, “I CHOOSE TO BE THANKFUL.”

Here a...

The Fine Line Between Carpe Diem and Who Gives A $#*! — A re:create 2013 Recap

The_Show_Must_Go_OnInevitably each year at re:create, a beautiful painting emerges.

This phenomenon has recurred for the past thirteen years.

Refreshment, encouragement, and diffusion of ideas always stand out as the primary colors of our gathering, but it’s the pattern that emerges and surprises us, that ties the composition together and provides what Aquinas, and later Joyce, calls claritas.

To wax philosophical for a moment, claritas is the quidditas of re:create.

And I suppose that’s what this post is all abo...

Just What Is The re:create Conference All About?

[image error]“Just what is the re:create Conference all about?”

“What are the reasons you started it?

“Why another conference? Why re:create?”

“What do you want people to walk away with?”

These unexpected but timely questions came at lunch yesterday from (of all people) Melissa Greene, a long-time friend and mentee (22 years), who now serves as the re:create experience director.

I could not help but think, if Melissa needs these questions clarified, EVERYONE needs clarification.

Over 20 years ago, while servi...
