5 Lessons of Love & Peace from the Last Night of Hanukkah

Yesterday afternoon I had the honour of speaking at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue at their multi-faith Hannukah (Chanukkah) celebration.

A few people from different faiths spoke about sharing our light and love, and bringing peace into the world.

We need peace and togetherness more than ever today in our troubled world – and this was an inspirational reminder of what’s possible when people from all backgrounds and faiths share their common humanity.

The two main speakers were Julie Siddiqi (Islamic faith) and Laura Marks (Jewish faith), who both spoke eloquently about peace and bringing people together during this challenging time.

You can watch the entire celebration here:-

I was asked to speak too from the Hindu perspective but as I was suffering from a sore throat, my friend Phillipa read out my speech.

Love-filled evenings like this fill me with hope and inspiration for the future.

Here’s the long version of my speech:-

Good afternoon, everyone,

It is an honour to be here with you all to celebrate Chanukkah, a festival that holds deep meaning not just for those of the Jewish faith, but for all of us who cherish the values of love, light, peace,
and joy.

1. Common Threads of Light and Joy

In Hinduism, we celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, which, much like Chanukkah, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.

Tonight, as we gather to light the Chanukkah candles, we are reminded that light is a universal beacon of hope and positivity.

In these flames, I see a reflection of our shared joy – a joy that transcends our different backgrounds and unites us in celebration.

2. Love as a Universal Language

Love is the language that transcends all barriers – it does not know the boundaries of religion or culture.

It is the force that can bring us closer, bridge gaps, and foster understanding.

In a world often divided, love is our greatest tool for unity.

As we come together tonight, let us remember that our capacity to love is our most powerful commonality, the thread that weaves through every faith and every heart.

3. Peace Through Unity and Respect

Peace is not just the absence of conflict; it is the presence of respect and harmony among diverse groups.

Events like this, where we gather in mutual respect and celebration of each other’s traditions, are vital.

They are the stepping stones towards a world where peace is not just an aspiration but a reality.

As we light the candles tonight, let us commit to being ambassadors of peace, respecting and cherishing the multitude of beliefs that enrich our world.

4. The Light Within

In Hindu philosophy, we often speak of the inner light – the Atman or soul, which is a part of the universal spirit.

This divine spark exists within each one of us, guiding us towards righteousness and truth.

The Chanukkah candles, with their gentle, steadfast glow, remind me of this inner light.

They remind us that each of us carries within us the light that can dispel darkness, the light that can guide us to live with love, peace, and joy.

5. Joy in Diversity

Tonight, as we gather from different faiths and walks of life, we celebrate not just Chanukkah, but the beauty of diversity.

Each tradition, each culture, brings its unique light to the human experience.

It is this diversity that makes our world so rich, so vibrant. Let us embrace this diversity, learning from each other, growing in understanding, and finding joy in the multitude of ways we express our humanity.

In closing, I wish you all a joyous Chanukkah.

May the lights we kindle tonight illuminate our paths, guide us towards greater love and understanding, and remind us that, in the end, we are all part of one human family.

…………………………………………………………………………………………..

Reminder – you can watch the entire celebration here:-

I wish you all a joyous festive time, filled with love, light and magic!

With Much Love

Arvind

13+ Ways to Naturally Detox When You Feel Bloated & Fed-up

bloated and fedup

Do you often feel bloated and fed-up, searching for ways to naturally detox and overcome those persistent digestive issues?

Are you tired of feeling bloated and sluggish all the time?

Are digestive issues getting in the way of your daily life?

It’s okay, we’ve all been there.

I know how frustrating and exhausting it can be to deal with constant bloating and sluggishness.

It can feel like an uphill battle, especially when you’re doing everything right but still not seeing results.

In fact, I know exactly how you feel.

That’s why I want to share with you 13 ways to detox your body and feel like your best self again.

I know it can be tempting to try those quick-fix detox teas or extreme juice cleanses, but trust me, there are healthier and more effective ways to detox your body. And the best part? These methods won’t leave you feeling hungry or deprived.

So if you are one of many people out there who secretly struggle with digestive issues, I want to reassure you that you’re not alone. And more importantly, there is a way to feel better. Naturally.

Let’s begin our journey to a happier, healthier you

1. Drink Warm Lemon Water in the Morning

Starting your day with warm lemon water can help to flush toxins from your body and promote digestion.

Lemon is rich in vitamin C, which is an antioxidant that can help to neutralise free radicals and reduce inflammation. Plus, it can help to stimulate bile production, which aids in digestion.

2. Cut Out Processed Foods

Processed foods are often loaded with sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, which can contribute to inflammation and digestive issues.

Cutting them out of your diet can help to reduce inflammation and improve your overall health.

3. Eat More Fibre

Fibre is essential for maintaining good digestive health. It helps to promote regular bowel movements, reduce constipation, and improve gut health.

Eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help you to get the fibre you need.

4. Try Probiotics

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your gut health. They can help to improve digestion, boost the immune system, and reduce inflammation.

You can get probiotics from fermented foods like yoghurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut, or from supplements.

5. Practise Mindful Eating

Mindful eating is all about paying attention to your food and eating slowly. It can help to reduce stress, improve digestion, and prevent overeating.

By taking the time to savour your food, you can enjoy it more and feel more satisfied.

6. Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise can help to improve digestion by increasing blood flow to your digestive system.

It can also help to reduce stress, which can contribute to digestive issues. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week.

7. Drink Plenty of Water

Staying hydrated is important for good digestive health.

It helps to keep things moving smoothly through your digestive system and can prevent constipation. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day.

8. Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is crucial for good health, including digestive health.

Lack of sleep can lead to stress, which can contribute to digestive issues. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night.

9. Reduce Stress

Stress can have a major impact on your digestive health. When you’re stressed, your body produces more cortisol, which can cause inflammation and other problems.

To reduce stress, try relaxation techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga.

10. Avoid Overeating

Overeating can put a strain on your digestive system and lead to bloating and discomfort.

To avoid overeating, try eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day.

11. Cut Back on Alcohol

Alcohol can be hard on your digestive system, particularly if you drink too much or too often.

Cutting back on alcohol can help to reduce inflammation and improve digestive health.

12. Try Digestive Enzymes

Digestive enzymes can help to break down food and improve digestion.

They can be particularly helpful if you have digestive issues like bloating or gas. You can get digestive enzymes from supplements.

13. Seek Professional Help

If you’re struggling with digestive issues, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. A gastroenterologist or nutritionist can help you to get to the bottom of your issue.

No need to suffer on your own.

Bonus Tip: Connect with Nature

joyous nature

Immerse yourself in the serenity of nature. Whether it’s a stroll through a lush green park, sitting by a gentle stream, or tending to your garden, nature has a profound way of detoxing the mind and soul.

The fresh air can boost your mood, the calm environment can reduce stress levels, and the act of walking or gardening can serve as gentle physical activity, promoting better digestion.

Just a few minutes a day in nature can refresh your senses, rejuvenate your spirit, and offer a holistic detox experience.

Take Control of Your Digestive Health Today

By implementing just a few of the above tips, you can start taking control of your digestive health today and naturally detox.

Whether it’s drinking more water, eating more fibre, or trying a new relaxation technique, each of these strategies can help you feel better and more energised.

So, what’s the first step you’ll take?

Will you commit to drinking a glass of water with lemon first thing in the morning? Or perhaps you’ll make a conscious effort to chew your food more slowly and mindfully during meals.

Whatever it is, I encourage you to start small and build momentum from there.

Because here’s the thing: when it comes to our health, small actions can have a big impact. And by taking charge of your digestive health, you’re setting yourself up for a more vibrant and fulfilling life.

So go ahead, take that first step.

You’ve got this!

How to Conquer the 2024 London Marathon and Be a SuperHero

glory forever

Can you even imagine yourself at the start line of the London Marathon?

Are you tired of feeling like you’re stuck in a rut, going through the same mundane routine, day in and day out?

Do you crave a challenge that will push you to be your best self and inspire others around you?

Look no further than the London Marathon, where you can become the ultimate inspirational winner and conquer the challenge of a lifetime.

In April 2024, thousands of runners from around the world will gather in London to test their endurance, commitment, and resilience.

Will you be among them?

Or will you be on the sidelines watching on? Just like you watch your life drift by?

You might be thinking, “Who is mad enough to run 26.2 miles?”

“I am not a runner, there’s no way I can do this.”

But let me tell you, that couldn’t be further from the truth. With the right mindset and preparation, anyone can cross that finish line and achieve their dreams.

My Crazy Addiction to the London Marathon

A few years ago, I was just like you. Dreading the thought of endlessly running for hours and hours. Pounding the solitary roads in excruciating pain. Suffering the harrowing loneliness of a long-term runner.

Then one day, I made the crazy decision. I got a running place through a charity, and I committed to take part.

I was going to get to the finish line. No matter what.

It took me over seven hours. But I did it.

Then it got even crazier. I caught the bug, and I got hooked on marathon running.

Last month in April 2023, I completed my 9th London Marathon. And I raised thousands for various good causes along the way.

I became a hero in my own life. And in the eyes of all my friends.

They too at first thought I was crazy. But secretly, they were in awe. And full of grudging admiration.

They all bragged about running a marathon.

But I was the only one who did it.

Not once, not twice but nine times!

Arvind's London Marathon medals

Time For You to be a Hero Too.

Are you ready to become a hero too?

Then let’s begin your journey to becoming a London Marathon finisher and inspire those around you to chase their own aspirations.

You can do this.

Running a marathon is not for the faint of heart. It requires months of preparation, discipline, and sacrifice. It demands physical and mental strength, as well as the support of family, friends, and fellow runners. But it also offers a unique opportunity to transform yourself, to overcome obstacles, and to inspire others.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for and conquer the London Marathon in 2024:

Why Run the London Marathon?

The London Marathon is not just another race.

It is a celebration of human achievement, a showcase of cultural diversity, and a fundraiser for hundreds of charities.

Since its inception in 1981, the London Marathon has raised over a billion pounds for various causes, such as medical research, social justice, education, and the environment.

By running the London Marathon, you can make a difference in someone’s life and contribute to the greater good.

You can get a place in the London Marathon by choosing to run for any one of many good causes. You just have to commit to raising sponsorship for your chosen cause.

If you are really lucky, you can get a place through the marathon ballot.

Taking part also offers numerous benefits to your physical and mental health.

Regular exercise has been proven to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. It also strengthens your bones, muscles, and immune system, and improves your mood, energy, and sleep.

By training for and completing a marathon, you can achieve a sense of accomplishment, confidence, and purpose that can last a lifetime.

Prepare for the Marathon

Preparing for a marathon requires more than just lacing up your shoes and hitting the pavement.

You need to have a plan, a purpose, and a passion.

Here are my tips to help you prepare for the London Marathon:

Create a training schedule that suits your level of fitness and your lifestyle. Gradually increase your mileage, incorporate speed work, and cross-train to prevent injuries. There are various training plans online that you can follow.       Invest in good running gear, such as shoes, socks, and clothes, that fit well and provide support and comfort. Consider using a GPS watch or an app to track your progress and motivate you.       Eat a balanced and nutritious diet that fuels your body with the right amount of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Hydrate yourself with water, sports drinks, and electrolytes before, during, and after your runs.       Take care of your mental health as well as your physical health. Practice relaxation techniques, such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing, to reduce stress and anxiety. Find a running buddy or a coach who can support and motivate you throughout your journey.Conquer the Marathon

On the day of the London Marathon, you will face many challenges, both internal and external. Here are some tips to help you conquer the marathon:

Pace yourself wisely. Start slowly and steadily, and avoid the temptation to sprint at the beginning. Use the aid stations to hydrate and refuel, but don’t overdo it.

Focus on your form and your breathing. Keep your shoulders relaxed, your arms swinging, and your head up. Breathe deeply and rhythmically, and exhale forcefully to release tension.

Stay motivated by setting mini-goals and milestones. Break the race into sections, such as the first 10 miles, the halfway point, and the last 6 miles. Use positive self-talk and visualisation to stay focused and confident.

Draw inspiration from the spectators and fellow runners. Listen to the cheers, the music, and the encouragement of the crowds. Hi

Be An Inspirational Winner in Your Life

Crossing the finish line of the London Marathon is a moment of triumph that will stay with you forever.

But being an inspirational winner goes beyond the race itself.

It means embodying the values of perseverance, compassion, and gratitude that define the human spirit.

Here are some ways to be an inspirational winner:

Share your journey with others. Document your training, your struggles, and your victories on social media, a blog, or a vlog. Inspire others to follow their dreams and to support your cause.         Give back to the community. Volunteer at a charity, a shelter, or a hospital, and use your platform to raise awareness and funds for a cause that you care about. Show your gratitude for the blessings in your life by giving to others.         Learn from your experience. Reflect on what you have learned about yourself, your capabilities, and your values. Use the lessons you have gained from the marathon to improve your life and the lives of others.         Plan your next challenge. The London Marathon is just the beginning of your journey as a runner and as a human being. Set new goals, take on new challenges, and continue to grow and inspire others. Your journey of inspiration has only just begun.Go Claim Your Medal!

Picture yourself at the start line of the next London Marathon. Along with thousands of other heroes.

You have put in the training mileage. Paid your dues over the winter months. Got yourself in the best shape of your life.

You have already raised tonnes of sponsorship money for your favourite charity.

You have your running number tightly pinned to your running vest. And you have your water and energy gels ready and packed.

The adrenalin is buzzing, the excitement all around you is building and your friends are waiting to cheer you on along the course. And they are ready to see you at the finish line, to celebrate with you, and to admire your shiny winning medal in awe and envy.

Then imagine yourself gliding past some of London’s most iconic landmarks. The incredible noise of the cheering crowds makes you float through the miles.

You are a superhero in a sea of heroes.

And before you know it you are going past Buckingham Palace just before the finish line.

The crescendo of the cheering crowd is deafening.

The finish line is in sight – and you sprint the last few yards.

You are in ecstasy as you cross the finish line.

A bunch of volunteers congratulate you. One of them garlands you with a precious marathon medal around your neck. Someone else gives you a goody bag with your marathon finisher’s t-shirt.

Now you can relax. Wobble home. Get a massage. Grab a celebratory beer. Or two.

You are ready to sleep. Put up your legs. (Until the next marathon!).

You have done it.

You are a winner!

A dream fulfilled.

The London Marathon conquered.

And you know your life will never be the same again.

You’ve got this.

You can do this.

It’s time to become a hero in your life.

Carpe Diem!

17+ Smart & Proven Ways to Improve Memory As You Get Older

improve memory

Have you wondered how you can improve memory as you get older?

Who can ever forget the sensation of triumph when they first rode a bike without training wheels? Or the palpable excitement and fear on their first day of school.

Memories like these, and countless others, construct the unique tapestry of your personal history.

Contrary to popular belief, ageing does not necessarily entail memory decline

How do you improve your memory as you age?

Science shows us that your brain, much like a muscle, has a remarkable ability for growth and change. With the right approach, you can maintain and even improve your memory as you age.

This guide will walk you through over seventeen scientifically-proven strategies to enhance your memory, regardless of your age.

Let’s dive in.

17 Strategies to Optimise Your Lifestyle for Enhanced Memory

Memory isn’t solely reliant on mental activities.

Everyday lifestyle choices, like diet, physical activity, and mental health practices, can significantly impact your memory function. Small changes in these areas can lead to substantial memory improvements.

This section will highlight key lifestyle factors that influence memory and suggest strategies for optimization.

1. Maintain a Balanced Diet

A balanced diet with foods to improve memory is crucial for optimal brain function.

Including brain-boosting nutrients in your meals will enhance memory and cognition.

Berries are rich in antioxidants that delay brain ageing and enhance memory. Fatty fish is a source of Omega-3s, which is essential for brain health.

Nuts, especially walnuts and dark chocolate, also have beneficial compounds for the brain.

2. Eat Mindfully

What if enhancing your memory was as simple as paying attention to your meal?

Mindful eating is a practice that involves savouring each bite, being present in the moment, and appreciating the food we consume.

This active engagement with food not only improves digestion but also promotes memory function by training the brain to concentrate and remember details.

3. Reduce Sugar Intake

Sugar might be sweet, but its effects on memory are not.

High sugar intake is linked to memory impairments and cognitive decline.

Swapping sugary treats for healthier alternatives, like fruits or nuts, can significantly improve your memory.

Reducing sugar has so many other health benefits, such as weight management, improved mood, and increased energy levels.

4. Take Food Supplements

path to wellness

Certain food supplements, particularly Omega-3 fatty acids, have been shown to enhance brain function and improve memory.

These fatty acids, which are found primarily in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, are crucial for brain health.

Taking these as supplements can fill in nutritional gaps and complement a balanced diet, thereby promoting optimal memory function.

5. Avoid Memory-Draining Foods

Just as some foods can boost memory, others can impair it.

Foods high in saturated fats, such as red meat and full-fat dairy products, and highly processed foods can negatively impact memory.

Instead, choose a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to provide the necessary nutrients for optimal brain function and memory.

6. Moderate Your Alcohol Consumption

While a glass of wine can be beneficial for heart health, chronic heavy drinking can lead to severe memory problems.

Hence, it’s essential to moderate and curb your alcohol consumption

Reducing alcohol intake can improve many aspects of health, including cognitive function and memory.

7. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Obesity can contribute to various health problems, including memory impairments.

Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular physical activity can support optimal memory function.

8 . Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise not only keeps the body fit but also boosts your brainpower.

Moderate-intensity exercises such as walking, cycling, or swimming increase blood flow to the brain, helping to boost memory and cognitive skills.

So, make it a point to get moving every day.

9. Improve Sleep Quality

Quality sleep plays a vital role in memory consolidation and optimal retention.

During sleep, our brain actively processes and stores the information we learn throughout the day.

Improve your sleep quality by establishing a regular sleep schedule, creating a sleep-friendly environment, and avoiding screens before bedtime. All these changes will significantly enhance and improve memory.

10. Manage Stress Effectively

meditate to manage your stress

Continual high-stress levels can wreak havoc on the brain, leading to memory impairment.

Incorporating stress-reducing activities like deep breathing exercises, yoga, and mindfulness can help manage stress levels and improve memory function.

Try effective stress management techniques, such as journaling, meditation, or even simply spending time in nature.

Pursuing hobbies and activities that you enjoy can also serve as effective stress-relievers.

11. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is often overlooked when considering memory improvement strategies.

However, even mild dehydration can impair cognitive function, including memory.

So, make sure you drink plenty of water each day to keep your brain hydrated and functioning optimally.

12. Promote Better Gut Health

Recent research has uncovered a profound connection between gut health and brain function.

Improving your gut health will contribute to a healthy brain, enhancing memory and cognitive function.

Probiotic-rich foods and a fibre-rich diet can boost gut health, leading to better memory.

13. Cultivate Mindfulness and Meditation Practices

Mindfulness and meditation can greatly enhance memory and focus.

These practices cultivate a sense of presence and help us focus on the task at hand, a critical aspect of memory.

Even just a few minutes of mindfulness or meditation each day can lead to significant memory improvements over time.

14. Organise Your Life

An organised life can lead to an organised mind.

Simple strategies such as establishing daily routines, creating to-do lists, and decluttering your living space can greatly enhance memory and reduce feelings of overwhelm.

The less clutter and chaos in your environment, the easier it is for your brain to focus and remember information.

15. Reduce Dependency on Technology

While technology can be a useful tool, excessive dependence on it can lead to memory impairment.

Limiting screen time and making an effort to memorise information instead of relying on digital devices help improve memory.

Try to remember phone numbers, directions, and other critical information without the aid of your smartphone.

16. Nurture Social Connections

make friends

Social engagement is great for our mental health and memory.

Regular interactions with loved ones, participating in group activities, and forming new connections can help keep our minds sharp.

These social experiences provide mental stimulation that helps preserve our cognitive abilities and memory function.

17. Minimise Environmental Factors Affecting Memory

Our environment can significantly impact our memory.

For example, chronic exposure to high noise levels can impair memory function. Similarly, air quality can affect cognitive abilities, including memory.

Therefore, ensuring your living and working environments are clean, quiet, and well-ventilated can support optimal memory function.

11 Strategies to Boost Your Brain Power and Amplify Memory Retention

Improving memory isn’t a passive process. It requires consistent effort and the right strategies.

You may wonder how to increase brain power and memory.

In this section, we’ll dive into scientifically-proven memory-boosting techniques and memory-improvement games that will boost your brain power and help you remember information better.

From organising information effectively to leveraging technology wisely, these strategies will empower you to take charge of your memory fitness.

1. Master the Art of Information Organization

Information organisation is a powerful tool for improving memory.

Techniques such as outlining, categorising, and using visual aids can help break down complex information into manageable chunks.

By creating a structure and establishing clear connections between pieces of information, your brain can process and retrieve information more efficiently.

2. Forge Powerful Associations

Association is a cornerstone of memory.

By linking new information to something you already know, you create a meaningful context that can enhance memory.

Whether you associate information with a personal experience, a visual image, or a particular emotion, these connections can act as memory anchors and significantly improve recall.

3. Leverage Technology

Strategic use of technology can help improve memory.

Tools like flashcard apps, mind-mapping software, or note-taking apps can provide external memory support.

Using technology to practise active recall or spaced repetition can also be incredibly beneficial.

However, it’s important to balance technological aids with direct, active engagement in the learning process.

4. Learn Techniques for Improving Long-term and Short-term Memory

Understanding the mechanisms behind long-term and short-term memory can help you harness your memory power.

Techniques like spaced repetition (revisiting information at increasing intervals) and chunking (grouping information into smaller, manageable chunks) can enhance long-term memory.

In contrast, rehearsal (repeating information) and visualisation can improve short-term memory.

5. Utilise Visual Cues

Our brains are inherently good at remembering visual information.

Using diagrams, charts, or mind maps can help visualise information and enhance memory. Even imagining a scene or event can serve as a powerful memory aid.

So, when trying to remember something, try to create a mental picture.

6. Create Mnemonics

Mnemonics, like acronyms, rhymes, or visual imagery, provide a handy mental shortcut for recall. They provide a framework for embedding, organising, and retrieving information effectively.

So, the next time you’re trying to memorise a list, try creating a catchy rhyme or a memorable acronym.

7. Write It Down

make it happen

Writing information down can enhance memory. This active engagement forces the brain to process the information more deeply, facilitating memory consolidation.

Whether it’s taking notes during a lecture, jotting down a shopping list, or keeping a journal, writing can be a powerful tool for memory enhancement.

8. Speak Out Loud

It may feel a little silly, but speaking out loud can significantly enhance memory.

The act of vocalising information engages multiple senses, making it easier for the brain to remember.

So, when you’re studying for an exam or trying to remember a shopping list, try reading the information out loud.

9. Engage in Active Recall

Active recall is the practice of actively trying to remember information without looking at the source material.

This could be in the form of self-quizzing or practice tests. By strengthening the neural pathways associated with the recalled information, active recall significantly enhances memory retention and retrieval.

10. Rehearse Information

Repetition is a fundamental principle of learning. The more you rehearse or repeat information, the stronger the memory becomes.

This can be especially useful when trying to remember critical information like dates, names, or key facts.

Whether it’s repeating the information aloud or writing it down multiple times, rehearsal can greatly enhance memory.

11. Explore New Hobbies

New hobbies can be a source of cognitive stimulation and memory enhancement. They encourage mental agility and adaptability, which are both vital for maintaining a sharp memory.

Artistic hobbies, like painting, sketching or sculpture, encourage visual thinking and boost creative problem-solving, both of which enhance memory.

Learning to play a musical instrument or even just listening to music can have profound effects on your memory and cognition. This is because music stimulates multiple areas of the brain, enhancing creativity, attention, and memory.

Learning a new language is a great way to flex your cognitive muscles. It challenges your brain to recognize, comprehend, and communicate in a completely new system, significantly enhancing cognitive flexibility and memory.

Unleash Your Memory Superpowers

happy father and son

Believe me, I get it. It’s frustrating when you feel like you’re doing everything right, but you’re still not seeing the results you want.

But here’s the thing. These 7 ways are different. They’re not your typical “eat more vegetables” or “get more sleep” advice. They’re unique, surprising, and, most importantly, effective.

Brainpower is a crucial component of our lives, influencing our ability to think critically, solve problems, and make decisions.

There are many common ways people try to enhance their brainpower, such as reading, exercising, and eating healthy, but there are also some surprising techniques that you may have never heard of.

In this article, we will explore seven unique and effective ways to boost your brainpower, from polyphasic sleeping to meditating with binaural beats.

So, if you’re ready to take your brainpower to the next level, let’s dive in and explore these 7 surprising ways together.

You never know, one of them might just be the missing piece you’ve been searching for.

1. Try Polyphasic Sleeping

Polyphasic sleeping is a sleep pattern where you break up your sleep into multiple shorter periods throughout the day, as opposed to the traditional one long block of sleep at night.

This method may sound strange, but it has been proven to enhance brainpower by allowing the brain to recharge more frequently throughout the day.

There are many benefits of polyphasic sleeping, including increased alertness, better memory retention, and improved cognitive function.

To try polyphasic sleeping safely and effectively, you should start with a schedule that involves one or two naps per day, gradually building up to a more complex sleep pattern.

You may experience some initial difficulty adjusting to the new schedule, but with persistence and discipline, you will find that polyphasic sleeping can be an effective way to boost your brainpower.

2. Learn a New Skill with Your Non-Dominant Hand

Learning a new skill with your non-dominant hand can have significant benefits for your brainpower, as it forces your brain to work in new and different ways.

This process creates new neural pathways in the brain, strengthening your cognitive abilities and improving your overall brain function.

Some examples of skills to try with your non-dominant hand include writing, drawing, brushing your teeth, or even using chopsticks.

To get started, simply choose a skill that you want to master and begin practising with your non-dominant hand. At first, it may feel difficult and awkward, but with practice, you will see improvements in your hand-eye coordination and overall brain function.

3. Use Mnemonic Devices

Mnemonic devices are memory aids that can help you remember information more easily. There are many different types of mnemonic devices, including acronyms, visualization, association, and many more.

These devices work by creating a connection between new information and something that you already know, making it easier for your brain to retain and recall the information.

To use mnemonic devices effectively, you should start by choosing a device that works best for you, depending on the type of information you want to remember. Then, create a mental image or story that connects the new information to something you already know.

With practice, you will find that using mnemonic devices can be an effective way to boost your brainpower.

4. Practise Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is a pattern of eating where you cycle between periods of fasting and eating.

This method has been shown to improve brain function by reducing inflammation in the brain and increasing the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that plays a crucial role in promoting the growth and survival of neurons.

To start practising intermittent fasting, you should begin by choosing a fasting schedule that works best for you, such as the 16/8 method or the 5:2 method. Then, gradually work up to longer fasting periods, allowing your body to adjust to the new eating pattern.

With time and discipline, you will find that intermittent fasting can be an effective way to boost your brainpower.

5. Play Video Games

Believe it or not, playing video games can actually improve your brainpower!

Studies have shown that playing video games can improve attention, spatial reasoning, and decision-making skills, all of which are important for cognitive function.

In particular, strategy games and games that require problem-solving skills have been shown to have the most beneficial effects on brainpower.

Games like chess, Sudoku, and even certain mobile games can help improve cognitive function and promote healthy brain ageing.

One of the ways that video games improve brain function is by increasing the amount of grey matter in the brain. Grey matter is the part of the brain responsible for processing information and making decisions, and studies have shown that playing video games can increase grey matter volume in certain areas of the brain.

However, before you go out and buy the latest gaming console, it’s important to note that moderation is key.

Too much gaming can have negative effects on your brain and your overall health, so it’s important to find a balance that works for you.

6. Listen to Music with Specific Beats

Music has long been known to have a powerful effect on our emotions and mood, but did you know that certain types of music can also boost brainpower? Research has shown that music with specific beats and rhythms can improve cognitive function and enhance memory.

In particular, music with a beat frequency of around 60 beats per minute (BPM) has been shown to have the most beneficial effects on the brain. This is because this beat frequency is similar to the rhythm of our resting heart rate, which can help to promote a state of relaxation and reduce stress.

Examples of music genres that use this beat frequency include classical music, jazz, and certain types of electronic music.

Listening to this type of music while studying or working on a project can help to improve focus and concentration, making it easier to retain information and complete tasks efficiently.

7. Meditate with Binaural Beats

Meditation is a powerful tool for reducing stress, improving focus, and promoting overall well-being. But did you know that meditating with binaural beats can also have benefits for your brainpower?

Binaural beats are a type of sound wave that is created when two different frequencies are played simultaneously in each ear.

The brain perceives a third beat that is the difference between the two frequencies, which can have an effect on brainwaves and create a state of relaxation or focus.

By incorporating binaural beats into their meditation practice, a person who struggles with focus during meditation is able to achieve a deeper level of focus and feel more relaxed overall.

Bonus Tip:- Engage in Mindful Meditation

Mindfulness has gained attention for its numerous mental benefits, but its influence on cognitive abilities is particularly noteworthy.

Practising regular mindful meditation can lead to changes in the brain associated with learning, memory, and stress regulation.

In fact, mindful meditation has been linked with increased grey matter density in the hippocampus. This is vital for memory and learning.

Additionally, structures related to self-awareness, compassion, and introspection also benefit from it.

By reducing the negative effects of stress, meditation can preserve and even enhance cognitive functions.

To start, dedicate a few minutes daily to sit in a quiet place, focus on your breath, and simply be present in the moment.

Over time, as you increase your duration, you might find clarity, focus, and cognitive improvements you didn’t expect.

Unleash Your Brainpower Now

You might be feeling a mix of excitement and scepticism about the seven surprising ways to boost your brainpower that we’ve discussed.

I get it.

Trying new things can be daunting, and it’s natural to feel a bit hesitant about implementing them into your life.

But remember that you have the power to unleash your brainpower and take control of your life. You can break free from old habits and embrace new ones that will help you grow and achieve more than you ever thought possible.

6 Key Lessons in Life from a 150 year Old Man

Today, 2nd October 2019, is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi.

So he would have been 150 years old today had he not been assassinated in 1948.

Gandhi may not be around anymore but his legacy and his message of non-violence lives on and he is indeed the light the world needs today.

He has always been one of my heroes from a young age and I remember crying after watching Richard Attenborough’s famous film Gandhi.

We had made a special trip to London and watched the film in Leicester Square just a few days after its release – watching it was a defining moment in my life.

I have watched this remarkable movie about a remarkable man many times since then.

Generations to come will scarcely believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood.” – Einstein

I have read a lot about Gandhi since then and also been influenced by my late father who collected a huge library of Gandhi’s teachings.

It is now up to all of us to apply Gandhi’s teachings in our daily life – after all his message about peace and non-violence is more pertinent than ever before today.

On this 140th anniversary of his birth, here are 6 keys lessons for all of us to apply in our life from today

1. Be the Change You Wish to See in the World.

This is possibly Gandhi’s most famous phrase and tells us that before we can go and change the world, we have to change ourselves.

From the being, comes the doing and ultimately the having.

So we now have the message – “Do the change you wish to see in the world”.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world before it’s too late.

Check out this truly inspirational video clip about being the change:-

Focus on changing yourself and being the change you wish – and soon we can begin to look at the bigger picture and solve the world’s challenges.

There is this anecdotal story about how a mother came with her son to see Gandhi. She wanted Gandhi to tell her son to stop eating too much sugar as it was harmful for his health. He asked her to come back a month later by which time he himself had cut down on his own sugar intake.

The point is that before you can get anyone to take on your own teachings, you have to apply them to your own life. There are various phrases to reflect this message such as “practise what you preach” and “walk the talk”.

Let your life be your message” – Gandhi

Is your life the message you want to give the world?

When will you be the change you want the world to be?

2. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

There is enough in the world for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s greed” – Gandhi

Even in Gandhi’s time there was vast disparity in the world between the rich and the poor. He could see how the world’s resources were being pilloried to satisfy the excessive demands of the West whilst most people in the rest of the world were barely surviving.

Today I would argue that the way we are all living in the West and elsewhere, there is not even enough for everyone’s needs. We must revisit how we live our lives and truly learn to reduce, reuse and recycle – the 3Rs.

The time has come when we cannot just rely on others – each one of us has to do our bit. Increasingly, more and more people and also businesses are waking up to their responsibilities to the environment, the larger community and the global implications of their activities.

Start today and apply the 3Rs in your life.

3. Live a Simple, Minimalist Life.

Gandhi lived a very simple, frugal life. He died with very few possessions and he preached simplicity and minimalism in all areas of life.

He also dressed simply and even persisted with his simple Indian loin cloth when he visited England and met the King. When asked if he was under dressed for a meeting with the King, Gandhi replied that the King had enough clothes on for both of them!

Minimalism is something I am beginning to apply in my life too. To get you started, please check out this excellent “Minimalist Guide” from my blogging mentor and friend Leo Babauta of Zen Habits.

Leo is a man Gandhi would have approved off for his humility, sharing, compassion and also his hairstyle:-)

Start living a simpler minimalistic life from today – and you will release a lot of time and energy to bring more of Gandhi’s teachings into the world.

4. If No One Walks With You, Walk Alone

Walk your path no matter what others do

Believe in your cause, follow your truth and stick to your journey even if you have to walk the path on your own.

Gandhi at the end of his life was said to be heart broken with the partition of India as millions were killed and displaced. Even then, he still had a message for the world – it takes just one man to make a difference.

If no one responds to your call, go forward alone.
If no one talks to you, oh luckless one,
If everyone turns away from you in fear,
Reveal your thoughts and express your ideas to yourself.
If everyone leaves you while you are travelling a dangerous road,
If no one wants to look after you,
Walk on alone, on the road strewn with thorns, trampling on them with bleeding feet.
If no one shows a light, if in the dark stormy night everyone shuts their doors,
Use your rib as a torch, lit from the fire of thunder.Rabindranath Tagore

So anything and everything you do counts and will make a difference.

5. Get Your Power Through Humility

Gandhi was a very humble, down to earth, ordinary human-being but therein lay his power and authority. His power came from being very clear about who he was, his values and his mission.

So the clearer you are about who you are and what you stand for, the more power you will exert in the world, whilst remaining humble and as down to earth as you wish.

Of course, by power what I mean here is not the power that corrupts but one that changes the world and makes a positive contribution.

6. Start Today

The difference between what we do, and what we are capable of doing, would solve most of the world’s problems” – Gandhi

Believe that what you do matters, and that it will make a difference.

You can’t save the whole world single-handedly, and we can’t all be a Gandhi or a Mandela, but you can certainly make a difference to one person at a time. So look for ways to contribute.

Ask yourself what special skill or knowledge you have that can solve a problem or make the best of a situation and that will help or support others.

And actually, maybe we can all be a Gandhi or a Mandela

Friends & Friend’s Friends Picnic 2019 (Year 18!)

picnic2016

It’s time for my annual picnic in Regents Park!

Called “Friends & Friend’s Friends Picnic“, it is held every year – and this is YEAR 18!!!

This year it is to be held on Sunday, 11th August 2019.

(Post-picnic update – This year’s picnic was phenomenal with around 500+ people attending during the course of the day! You can see all the photos here on Facebook – Friends and Friend’s Friends Picnic #18“).

17 years ago, I had a vision of bringing people together in community in a spirit of fun and contribution – and so I invited all the people in my life to a picnic. And I asked them to invite all their friends too.

So my “Friends & Friend’s Friends Picnic” was born!

With all that’s going on in the world right now, I believe that it’s imperative that we come together as a people as much as possible – and what better way to meet and create new friendships than in a gorgeous setting and with a fun, friendly vibe?

History of the Friends and Friend’s Friends Picnic

I first had the idea of the Friends and Friend’s Friends Picnic in summer 2002 when I wanted to bring together people from my family, my friends and the communities that I was part of.

Rather than inviting everyone out on different days, I asked them all to join me for a picnic in Regents Park – and to also invite their friends and ask them to invite their friends.

I had a few friends comment on how easily I was able to connect and make new friends – it was like magic to them!

So I wanted to introduce all my London friends to each other – and bring strangers together in a spirit of community and friendship in London where people seem to live in isolation and everyone is so busy.

That first year, around 60 people came, despite it being a cold and rainy Sunday in June – and the Friends and Friends Friends Picnic was born.

I chose Regents Park because I live nearby but mainly because to me it is the nicest park in London and offers so many activities for my picnic attendees.

The following year over 100 people came with some relatives coming from as far away as Coventry, Birmingham, and Brighton.
That second year I started the tradition of African drumming and dancing and that theme has continued ever since with some years over 20 drummers in full flow!

The picnic grew every year – and in the last few years we have had over 400 people attending – and it’s getting bigger every year!

The picnic has now become a fixed highlight in many people’s social calendars and I now usually hold it end of July or early August. Experience has taught me that that is the most popular time for people and also when we are most likely to get reasonable weather.

One year it rained so heavily that we all had to shelter under the trees for almost an hour. Despite the wetness, over 50 hardy party animals stayed till dusk.

I now usually get 200 to 300 people attending every year – and in August 2016 we had our biggest picnic ever with over 500 people attending in the course of the day.

We now have even more fun activities such as laughter yoga sessions, Bollywood dancing, hula hooping, friendly football matches and the perennial favourite – African drumming.

A lot of new friendships have started as a result of the picnic – 6 years ago a good friend of mine landed a key job in television directly as a result of someone she met at the picnic who then recommended her to a job.

Best of all, in the last two years we have had our first picnic babies! A couple who first met at the picnic in July 2013 started dating soon after and recently became proud parents of baby Lyra in 2016 and recently had their second baby.

Here is the Facebook event page for this year’s picnic:-

It’s actually a very simple concept.

The idea is to get a lot of friends and their friends together. I invite all my friends and they invite all their friends and they invite their friends and so on……and before we know, there will be 100’s of friends, new and old, having a lot of fun.

Everyone is invited to bring their own food and drinks plus some extra to share. We will also be playing Frisbee, frisbee etc for fun, so bring those trainers and sports gear. And of course children are most welcome. If you haven’t got any, borrow some for the day

Help Me Help More Brave, Sick Children Like Maddison

Happy Friday everyone!

It’s finally spring time in London – and that means it’s time once again for the London Marathon :-).

Do you get deeply moved by stories of brave, sick children?

And then are you moved to help them in some way?

Today I am going to share the incredible and moving story of Maddison.

You will then understand and appreciate exactly why I am taking part in the London Marathon.

On this coming Sunday 28th April, I’ll be lining up with over 41,000 other runners and each one of us will be raising awareness and sponsorship for their chosen cause.

I have chosen Well-Child, a charity that helps look after sick children like Maddison.

Some friends have been asking me why I am so passionate about WellChild and why I am taking part in the London Marathon for them once again.

Well, this is my way of contributing and making a difference to children. And you too can do your bit by sponsoring me.

Click here to go to my sponsorship page

Your contribution will be helping Maddison and other brave children like her.

(I have been given permission by WellChild to share Maddison’s incredibly inspiring and moving story).

Here is Maddison’s story:-

Maddison was born in August 2008, full term, at a healthy weight and apparently with no problems at all. Shortly after she was born, she was diagnosed with talipes (club foot) but her parents were reassured that this was an orthopaedic problem, which could be resolved with physiotherapy and possibly surgery.

Then Maddison’s Mum, Lidia, started to notice other things about Maddison, which were a little concerning. Maddison had a very feeble cry and didn’t seem to be moving her toes, stretching her feet properly or demonstrating a walking reflex.

Shortly after Christmas 2008 when Maddison was only a few months old, she contracted Respiratory Syncytial Virus and needed to be admitted to hospital for oxygen and a feed tube.

After a few weeks, although much better, her breathing still didn’t seem right and in February, doctors told her parents that they had discovered an abnormality with Maddison’s diaphragm, which they believed could be rectified with surgery.

Over the next few months Maddison remained in hospital. Throughout this time, although clinically still very poorly, Maddison caused confusion by her cheerful disposition and ability to thrive despite being in and out of intensive care.

Therefore on May 20th  2009, it came as a dreadful shock to Lidia and Jamie when they were given a diagnosis of SMARD (spinal muscular atrophy with respiratory distress) for Maddison.

Support from WellChild:-

Over the last few years Maddison has continued to thrive and exceed all expectations. She overcame concerns that mainstream school might be too much for her, attending along with all her peers and keeping up her stamina.

Since then she has been able to eat without a feeding tube and even has up to three hours a day off her ventilator. Maddison is doing well at school and she can propel herself independently using her special walking frame.

Maddison still needs 24/7 specialist care and the support of her ventilator is crucial.

WellChild Children’s Nurse, Rachel provides vital support for Maddison and her family in ensuring that any concerns with equipment, training for new carers or worries over Maddison’s breathing are addressed swiftly.

Rachel liaises with Maddison’s school and carers, rushes over with a replacement ventilator when Maddison’s equipment shows signs of malfunctioning and provides constant expert reassurance to the whole family.

This continuous monitoring, specialist advice and ability to intervene really quickly can make the difference between Maddison having to go to hospital or staying at home.

Maddison has proven that if she’s given the chance, through the medical and other support she receives, she can thrive and get the most out of life just like her siblings and her school friends.

So there you are – my participation in the London Marathon and your sponsorship will help provide more nursing support for children like Maddison.

My target is to raise at least £1,600 and more for WellChild.

Please help me get there!

Click here to go to my sponsorship page

If just 160 people sponsor me for at least £10 each, I’ll reach my target easily.

Thanks everyone for your kindness and generosity.

And look out for me on Sunday at the London Marathon – I shall be wearig my famous Red Wig!
