I just sent off my polished, deeply edited manuscript to my agent!

I worked myself really hard but I’m excited about it and it felt so good to do. It helps so much when you get feedback from someone who not only understands story but also really gets YOUR story. (Thank you, Jennifer!) I am now going to take a much-needed rest! YAY!

On a mini break from editing my manuscript I tried out Google’s new Poem Portraits

where you “donate” a word and the AI generates a poem. The word I chose was “healing.” I didn’t like the first poem, but the second was better (which I’m showing first). I still prefer poetry that is written by humans – it is more meaningful – but it was a fun experiment.
I found the service via Jane Friedman. You can try it out at https://artsexperiments.withgoogle.co...
If you want to save a copy of your generated poem portrait click “save portrait” or take a screenshot.

I just got the sweetest gift from reader and friend Lynn Postlewait – scented pens with fine-tip points!

I only write well with fine tips, so I thought I wouldn’t be able to play like this editing my manuscript, but now I can! And it came at the perfect time – when I am exhausted, doing one last (light) edit of my manuscript before I send it to my agent, and dealing with heavy content that draws on my own trauma. So a little bit of scented fun is delightful and lightening my mood!
Did I mention that I love pens? And scented pens? And being able to play and to work? Fun! Thank you, Lynn!

I am delighted that #YAlit author Jamie Deacon, who also writes about #LGBTQIA teens who struggle,

included SCARS in their list of 10 YA LGBT+ Novels To Read For Mental Health Awareness Week. You can check out all their recommended books as well as the books they’ve written at http://www.jamiedeacon.com/10-ya-lgbt...

If you’re having a hard time this Mother’s Day you are not alone, and I see you.

Mother’s Day can be hard for so many of us–those of us who had abusive mothers, those who had good mothers but have lost them, those who want to be mothers but can’t, those who were forced to be mothers, those who are caretakers for their sick or dying mothers, those who have lost their children, those who have strained relationships with their children, and anything else that I’ve forgotten that makes it hard.
If this day is hard for you I hope you do whatever you need to do to take good, gentle care of you. Get a snuggle from a pet, get a hug from a friend, call or text someone, use positive distraction, whatever works for you. Today I’m using positive distraction strongly, watching movies and eating chocolate, going for a walk, cuddling with Petal, and staying aware that my depression and pain are from my past trauma.
I’m also trying to remind myself of the positives, of Petal who is like a baby to me, of Jean my therapist who is like a mom to me, of my close friends who are my chosen family, of my published books that give me a voice and that help other people, and of all the lovely readers who let me know that my books help them.
If you are having a hard day today, I hope that your struggling eases, that your mood lift, and that you find comfort.
