Eroticon Blog 2: After the Workshop

A few days have now passed since the dust settled on the last event of this year’s Eroticon conference in Bristol.

20160521_144809

The first part of my blog report on the event can be found here- If you recall, I began to write that last blog prior to teaching me workshop on musical inspiration. The palms were sweating, and the nerves were on high alert.

It may seem strange to you, that even after teaching so many workshops, that I still get nervous. It will seem less odd perhaps if you think about who came along for my lesson…Ashley Lister, Zak Jane Keir, Jaye Peache, Anna Sky…I could go one!1 These people are seriously excellent writers. What then, are they doing sitting listen to me rumble on? Let me tell you- there is nothing like having some of the people you respect most in the writing world waiting for you to impart knowledge to make your palms sweat!

This year my workshop was something of an experiment. I wanted to see if, under the influence of different types of music, I could help steer a writer’s imagination off into a different direction than the one they’d normally be comfortable in. However- I didn’t tell my class that. If I had, then they’d have got hung up on that fact- instead I gave each person a first line of well known song. This had to form the first line of their work. Then, I played three very different pieces of music.

After listening for 3 minutes with their eyes shut to Kate Bush singing, Man with a Child in His Eyes, the challenge was to write a five minute snapshot from the beginning of a story, using the given lyric to start them off.

Then the process was repeated. This time however they listened to What Have You Done Now? by Within Temptation, and had to produce a 5 minute snapshot from the middle of their new piece, before  final few paragraphs were penned after listening to the late great David Bowie singing Let’s Dance.

This workshop produced some incredibly interesting discussion, and more important, some incredible work. Each person found themselves pushed in a different direction- and found they could write in a way they hadn’t known about before. I am very hopeful that some of those fragmented paragraphs will be joined up in the fullness of time, and we’ll see some extraordinary new erotica as a result.

write_sex_right_button

Let’s leave my workshop aside and reflect on the remainder of the conference. From a fascinating (and personally very useful) talk by F D Solomon about editing anthologies, to Jilly Boyd’s smutting up of everyday objects, and on to the closing readings – which had us laughing one minute and squirming the way that is all too common amongst erotica writers the next- there really was something for every element of the wordy side of the erotic professions.

A big thank you to Ruby Kiddell for putting together another great conference – her last one. The challenge is now on to see who will take this event on… (and no, I don’t want to put myself forward to run it- but thanks for asking!)

Happy reading,

Eroticon 2016: Blog 1- Pre-workshop

As I write this blog, it is Sunday morning, and I’m in a deserted coffee room in a conference centre in Bristol, at Eroticon, rehearsing my talk for later this morning. Everyone else is in their various workshops and talks, and I’m having a small panic.

20160521_144809

I’m not the bravest person in the world, and it never ceases to amaze me that people actually want to hear me talking about writing and impart my ‘wisdom’ (I use the inverted speech marks advisedly). So I’m having a quick run through of my workshop while by dear friend Tabitha is upstairs teaching people how to draw- with the aid of the gorgeous John, and the sex bloggers are having an open question panel. Naturally…I have coffee, and I’m in easy reaching distance of a packet of biscuits (chocolate!)

20160522_102649

Sponsored by Mystic Vibe, Pulse, Doxy, and the gorgeous colourful and eccentric Godemiche, Eroticon Live is Ruby Kiddell’s last event as organiser of this conference.

20160522_100104

I have been to all but one of the Eroticon events- and boy have they made an impact on me over the years. I’ve learnt how to construct some fabulously fun poetry thanks to Ashley Lister, improve my writing curiosity of a wide variety of authors from Kristina Lloyd to Kd Grace.

I’ve had my eyes widened as I’ve watched demonstrations in different forms of kink, and I’ve learnt a great deal about the world of the sex blogger- a life/career that is a million miles away from that of an erotic fiction writer. It takes a very special skill and a great deal of bravery to blog your innermost secrets.

This year, the wondrous folk from Kink Craft are here, helping us cack-handed author and blogger types make latex garters and small floggers- you can imagine the giggles!

As ever of course, it has been the chance to catch up with my writer friends (my lovely Brit Babe friends Tabitha Rayne, Lily Harlem and Kd Grace are here with me, amongst many others), that is the biggest attraction. The opportunity to chat with those folk who I’ve interacted with on Facebook many times, but have never met in real life, and to generally remind myself that I’m not the only person who spends my days hunched over a keyboard, inventing sexy scenarios designed to make other people feel good, is always very welcome

Ashe Baker, myself, Kd Grace, Ashley Lister & Katy Swann

For me- of course- the most incredible thing to have come out of Eroticon is the Brit Babes. Where would I be without them !?

Well, it’s time for my workshop, you I’d better stop waffling…. Wish me luck…

Curious to the Core!

I’m often asked what the major driving force of inspiration is behind my writing. There are many things that influence me; overheard conversations, musical lyrics, friend’s fantasies; but at the very back of all that is a basic curiosity- a curiosity that always wants to know what is going on beyond my point of vision!

Not that I’m an eye to the keyhole sort of person (like Maggie in my story Through the Crack; Quick Kink Two). Nor would there be any point in me jamming my ear to the crack in the door (I’m deaf as a post); it’s more that I can’t stop my imagination from filling in the blanks. I just simply can’t stop from musing over what ‘might be’ going on. What could be happening, is often so much more interesting than what is happening!

qk2

What could the top floor of a nearby hotel really contain? Is it full of nice normal bedrooms, in which tired out members of the business community can crash after a meeting? Or is it, as in my series, The Perfect Submissive Trilogy, a hotbed of private services and kinky sex?

Per Sub 3

When you see a sign on a lift saying ‘staff only’ where does that lift actually take you? When they announce over the loud speakers in the shop or club ‘Would a member of staff come to the storeroom,’ what happens when they get there? Are they sold to aliens for experimentation? Is there some erotically eccentric Sheik waiting to whisk them away to his harem? I always hope they aren’t just going to do something as dull as unpack boxes. I want them to have as much fun as the bar girls, and the young man they lure into their storeroom, in my story Break Time (The Collector)

The Collector

When you meet a stranger on the train; a stranger who catches your eye and sends your pulse racing- what would happen if you asked them out? Would you have coffee, maybe visit the cinema- or would you find yourself in the backroom of an exclusive club, doing sexually interesting things you hadn’t ever dreamt about, like the lead character in my story Black? (Yes Ma’am)

Yes Ma'am promo 2015

So basically I’m curious- or should that be nosily inquisitive- but only for what might happen- not for what really is happening- it’s far more fun that way!!

Happy Reading

My First Time: Zander Vyne

It’s time for another in my interview series, ‘My First Time.’ Today I’m delighted to welcome to Zander Vyne to talk about her early erotica writing experiences.

First Time

Can you remember writing the first story you actually wanted to write, rather than those you were forced to write at school? What was it about?

I had a fabulous creative-writing teacher in high school, so I began writing things I liked way back then. But, it being a school situation, I didn’t feel free to fully express myself in writing until much later in life. The first story I wrote with that sense of creative freedom was an adult fairy tale called Amethyst’s Feather. On surface, it was about a princess expected to marry and love the right kind of man who secretly longs to be with a mysterious man she’d met as a child. On her wedding day, she runs from the church, breaking free from convention only to discover her dream lover is an immortal beast and not a man at all. But she loves him anyway. It’s a morality tale which was actually a break-up letter to the person I wrote it for, to convince them to choose the beast over me (the more obvious choice).

ARCove-S

What was your first official publication? Was that erotica?

Amethyst’s Feather turned out to be the first story I sold. It was erotica, I thought, but a member of the writing group I belonged to at the time told me it was not erotica at all. My story contained “rape” and “beastiality” she said. She strongly discouraged me from submitting the story and warned that the editors would be horrified and never work with me again if I broke their “rules”. Instead, I wrote the editors, explained my dilemma and storyline and was asked to submit Amethyst’s Feather. They bought it, and this was the beginning of a long association with one of the editors. To my knowledge, the lady who found my story so offensive never went on to publish anything.

I had no idea I’d be an erotica writer- it just came from nowhere! Was writing erotica something you intended to do, or was it a bit of a shock?

I never set out to write erotica. Back in the early days of the internet, I was into chatting online. I loved interactive story-telling. I also developed an interest in BDSM (mostly the D part). Some of my early stories came from scenes or sprang out as ideas based on talks with people also interested in the lifestyle. So, yes, this writing direction was a huge shock. I’d always assumed I’d write horror or romance. Erotica gave me a chance to combine the two and opened a whole new world to me.

TalesofaVampireHunter_ebook_Final_small

What affect did that have on your life?

Writing erotica created issues with my family and friends. This was before FSG made erotica “okay” for all but the most uptight people. I saw most of my writing as mainstream, literary . . . more like Anais Ninn, Henry Miller, and other current, popular authors. Though I wrote my fair share of porn, most of my work was more about the impact our relationship with sex has on us as people and less about the sex itself. But it turned out most people didn’t feel that way in my Midwestern suburban community of Catholic girl-scout moms. Suddenly, I was a peddler of porn. One step removed from a paedophile. It was hard to take at first, but ultimately, their narrow minds opened mine and made me more determined to stick with writing what moved me, regardless of what anyone else thought. It encouraged me to be even more shocking. I worked in the film business for a long time and learned when people react strongly to you, you’re doing something right. I did stop talking about it while I grew a tougher skin and learned to write to please me and not others. Just to make life easier for my kids, I keep my pseudonyms separate and seldom discuss my writing with the soccer moms in my ‘hood or members of my family who are not supportive. I also support other writers with a vengeance through writing groups, workshops, encouragement, and help through many entities, including blogs, a small press publishing company, and an author services company.

Does your first published story reflect your current writing style?

Not at all! Though Amethyst’s Feather did push buttons, and explore topics that made some uncomfortable, it was really a morality tale . . . a fairy tale. Possibly the only one I’ve ever written. Now, I tend to try new styles, new genres, and new ways of expressing ideas. I love complex stories told using sparse language and writing that challenges me as well as the reader.

Bespelled by Zander Vyne Cover Art blog size

What are you working on at the moment?

I am working on finalizing print versions of my Tales of a Vampire Hunter novellas as well as an omnibus edition combining all three books. The publishing company is forming imprints and working with several clients in various genres. And I am writing a fun mainstream novel under another name as well as developing a grizzly thriller with my writing partner and a YA novel about a teenager’s murder in a small suburb very similar to the one I live in. Like much of my erotica, the surface story will be about one thing, but underneath, it’s a book about the way people judge others and think they know people, when actually few of us ever truly know others.

Random facts about Zander Vyne:

I used to let people think Zander was a he, to sell more stories, and because it was fun having a penis (even if imaginary, those things are the shit).

Unusual talents – drunken palm-reading and Improvisational story-spinning (usually not at the same time)

Fears – big ass spiders (because, really . . . a spider in your ass is scary as fuck); Bad punctuation (recurrent nightmares about it creeping into finished books)

Loves – weird people, head-banging music (extra points if made by a woman), sailing (lived on a sailboat for five years), used-book stores

Best job I ever had- (besides writing, which is not a job, but a love) working in a movie theatre

Many thanks Zander- fabulous interview!

Happy reading,

OUT NOW!!! ‘The Collector’ Rides Again!

It’s been absolutely AGES since I have had a new book out! The short stories have kept coming, but I’ve been so busy ‘being’ Jenny Kane, that Kay has had to wait patiently in the wings for a while.

However, never does a week go by without me writing some new words of erotica. Every Wednesday I take naughty pen to wicked paper- and as well as writing a new novella (out later this year), I’ve been giving my first solo work, The Collector, a reedit, and added 2 brand news stories to the 20 already snuggled between it’s pages.

The Collector 2016 b

Blurb

Gathering salaciously erotic stories against an everyday backdrop of bus trips, train journeys, coffee shops, and restaurants, The Collector documents a wide variety of sexual encounters as she travels Great Britain.

The Collector’s research takes her into every arena of the erotic experience, from love, lust, submission and dominance, to voyeurism and beyond.

Are you brave enough to see if it was your supposedly private conversation she overheard – and then wrote down?

The stories within The Collector vary greatly in length, style, and taste. The best way to think of it is as an erotica menu- lots of tasty tasters to help you discover which erotica works best for you. If you alike all sorts of erotica already, then you should (I hope!) like them all!

Ruby Glow - Copy

Anyway…my blog-

I’ve been writing erotica for a loooonnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggg time. Even so, the words I create from the images that fight for storylines in my head still have the power to make me- shall we say a little wriggly- as I type them.

Of course, if my words didn’t turn me on as I wrote them, then how could I possibly expect them to work for my readers? Erotica has to be as much about a good, sustainable, storyline as any work of literature- but it is also expected to give its readers a certain frisson…

It is this tingle that can- on occasion- hold up wordage production for us writer types.  For, after concocting paragraph after paragraph of other people getting their rocks off, our own needs can make themselves known – and it can distract things a little.

You can imagine therefore, that when my friend, writer, and fellow Brit Babe, Tabitha Raynehttp://www.thebritbabes.co.uk/?zx=65b88b1a32f65809 told myself and the BB crew that she was going to create a sex toy that would help address this issue, we were right behind her. That toy was to become the Ruby Glow.

brit babe button

I was very proud to be on the early ‘testing’ team for the Ruby Glow– and I’m incredibly proud of Tabitha for sticking at her dream. The process of creating a sex toy from idea to final product is a very complex and difficult one.

And so-  am now the proud owner – and user- of the Ruby Glow- a sit on, hands free toy for women, that can be used with your clothes still on!! Yes- it is that convenient… I can’t help wondering how many office drawers have a Ruby Glow hidden inside to cheer up those dull days at the office…

Ruby Glow was designed by Tabitha Rayne, is endorsed by the Brit Babes, and was manufactured and is sold by Rocks Off.

To add an extra flourish of yippees- the Ruby Glow has been nominated as a contender for the Most Innovative Product at this years ETO awards. If you can vote- then please do!!

This is how the Rocks Off website describes the Ruby Glow-

“A saddle style non-penetrative toy, designed to stimulate your whole vulva. The Ruby Glow has a ribbed clitoral stimulator and vibrating vaginal/perineal mound which sit snugly in place anchored by your pubic bone. Dual vibrations are controlled by buttons at the front for easy access, putting you in control of your orgasm. Made from firm yet velvety silicone, Ruby Glow can be used through clothing but is skin safe to enable full contact if desired. The Ruby Glow has many unique contours making it also ideal for using against your body as a traditional clitoral stimulator or massager. Let the potent sensual rhythms of Ruby Glow be your guide as you feel your body respond and move to its powerful dual heartbeats, seductively taking you to your ultimate hands free orgasm.”

Don’t forget to catch up with all the other blog hop blogs!

ETO Nomination: Best Erotica Writer 2016!!!

ETO nominee 2016

Regulars to this blog will remember the story of my trip to the ETO award last June. I was on my way to the ceremony in when life struck and I ended up drinking water in Worcester A&E, wearing a gown with an arse gap, rather drinking champagne and wearing a long velvet dress with a thigh gap at Birmingham’s NEC, … (A blog about last year’s adventure can be found here)
I am still, almost a year after the event, stunned that I won Best Erotica Author last time. I suspect it might have sunk in more if I’d been there- but even as I dust my award- which has pride of place in my hallway -it doesn’t feel real.

ETO Awards trophy and champ 2015

You can imagine my surprise and delight therefore; when I discovered that this year I’ve been nominated again!! Not only that, but my fellow nominees in the Best Writer category, are some of my closest friends. Kd Grace, Victoria Blisse, Tabitha Rayne and journalist Emily Dubberly are all fab folk- and three of those aforementioned gals are also Brit Babes!!!

brit babe button

Count them- that’s 4 Brit Babes out of a group of 5 nominations!!
I could not be prouder! I know it sounds all twee and a bit cliché, but we Brit Babes are such a team, such close friends, that a win for one of us, is truly a win for us all. We all work long hours, and we support each other on and off the smutty page. It’s good to know when I’m up against it, there are 7 other writers standing in my corner, cheering me on.
That, I have to tell you, is something a bit special.
Please may I urge you my friends- if you are in the trade- to get that vote registered. Choose your favourite out of all us wordy types and vote. Then on the night of 12th June, listen out for those BB cheers. Whether one of us wins or not, I guarantee you’ll hear us loud and clear!!
I hope to see you there this time- the frock I purchased for last year has to be worn eventually after all!
Happy reading,
Kay x
PS- Don’t forget you can also vote for Tabitha Rayne’s amazing new sex toy, The Ruby Glow, in the Most Innovative New Product category!
