Is Quinn, The Heroine Of B Free, Human?

When I first ‘met’ Quinn, the heroine of B Free (releasing in November), I thought she was human. She looked human. She acted human. She was raised in an orphanage with other human children. And she certainly didn’t correct me when I assumed she was human.

Sure, when she touches a metal object, she can determine its past and the feelings and events of its previous owners. Not many humans have that ability. (It is called Psychometry here on Earth.) But some do. So that revelation didn’t shift my view of her.

I happily crafted the first draft of the book description, mentioning in it that she was human.

That wasn’t the truth, unfortunately. Quinn ISN’T human. When she undergoes a lifeform scan, she is classified as being humanoid, much to her dismay.

Cyborgs have a built-in lifeform scanner. Things get…interesting for Quinn when she meets B. One of her ‘secrets’ is revealed. She can’t fool him….about THAT aspect of her. (grins) She has other secrets that she can keep from her big cyborg warrior.

Their shared enemies are chasing them, would kill to get their precious specimens back. One minor mistake could reduce B and Quinn to a mere line in the databases of history.

B Free And Psychometry

Quinn, the heroine of B Free, the fourth story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in November), has the gift of psychometry.

Psychometry, also known as token-reading, is “the claimed ability to make relevant associations from an object of unknown history by making physical contact with that object.”

The term was first used on Earth in 1842 by Joseph R. Buchanan. Critics call psychometry a pseudoscience and there is quite a bit of disbelief around it. I believe, however, there are things in this awesome universe we don’t yet fully understand and psychometry might be one of them.

Quinn’s gift makes her even more suited to her role as a researcher. Whenever she touches a metal object, she can ‘see’ its history and feel the past emotions of the beings who held it.

Quinn’s gift also causes her problems. Like many present-day Earth scientists, her colleagues don’t believe in her abilities. Other beings are afraid of her gift. It is uncomfortable being around someone who can see your deepest darkest secrets.

As a certain cyborg will soon discover. (grins)

Throwback Thursday – Dark Arsenal

Dark Arsenal is a free short story, a thank you to regular readers. It assumes you’ve read some of the Dark Thoughts/Refuge series and some of the Cyborg Sizzle (first) series.

The heroine is Vicuska, the human rebel agent we first met in Dark Fire. The hero is Arsenal, the cyborg warrior we first met in Knowing Zip. Both of these warriors believe they will die on their mission.

They never projected they would find love.

A cyborg warrior and a Rebel female’s first mission together might be their last.

Arsenal considers himself to be a disposable cyborg. He drifts from assignment to assignment, forming no connections to anything or anyone. When the cyborg council requires a warrior for a high-risk mission, Arsenal volunteers. He believes no one will miss him if he dies.

He doesn’t realize he’s one female’s fantasy.

The moment Vicuska glimpses Arsenal’s image, she knows he’s the male she wants to spend her last moments in the universe caressing. The Rebel female craves the cyborg’s grim-lipped kisses, desires the touch of his hands, hears his deep voice in her dreams.

Their mission will end in explosions and death. That is certain if they fail or if they succeed. Whether or not they’ll find love during their dangerous assignment is the unknown.

Adventures With Nature

Two days ago (yes, on Canadian Thanksgiving), a western conifer seed bug entered the house via a fan vent. These awesome armored-looking bugs moved really, really slowly (they fly quickly, however). Everything seems to be in slow motion for them.

Our visitor exited the fan vent in the main bathroom, turned his head slowly from side to side. He was likely wondering where on the Earth he was.

He looked at me.

I looked back at him.

He continued to look at me, not moving.

I retrieved the flyswatter, carefully slid it under him and transferred him outside. He didn’t want to leave the flyswatter. I had to nudge him off it.

Once he was on the ground, he slowly turned his head and looked back at me.

I don’t know what he was expecting me to do. I left him there. (grins)

Yesterday, as I was gardening, a western conifer seed bug (not often spotted in my neighborhood) landed on a plant beside me.

He looked at me.

I looked back at him.

He very slowly waved one of his front legs at me.

I like to think he was the same insect and he was saying hi. (smiles)

B Free And Needing To Know

One of my Awesome Sisters always needs to KNOW things, to verify things she suspects are true. I could tell her there’s a bear in the backyard and we should all stay inside and she will insist on leaving the house, risking her safety to verify there’s truly a bear in the backyard.

(This is one of the reasons her loved ones, the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I included, send her cameras and other surveillance equipment to be installed around her home. So she can SEE possible dangers without leaving her home.)

In B Free, the fourth core story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in November, which is SOONER than we all think – grins), B intercepts a message mentioning the existence of a B Model Cyborg. He knows, deep down in his soul, he is the last remaining B Model Cyborg. He suspects the message is a trap. There are no other living B Models left in the universe.

But not knowing for sure bothers him. He can’t ignore the message. He has to investigate.

Celebration Of The Harvest

Today is Thanksgiving in Canada. I was always told that Canadian Thanksgiving is earlier than US Thanksgiving because our harvest is earlier. We’re farther north. Frost comes earlier.

That is what I celebrate about Thanksgiving – the harvest. It is a celebration that is near and dear to my heart as my Awesome Granddad was a farmer. It is an important event for my family.

And it is an important event for everyone who likes to eat. (grins) Harvest celebrations are held all over the planet (and I suspect on other planets) in many different ways by many different cultures. If beings in an area grow food (a high risk yet essential activity), they likely rejoice when that food is ready to be stored or consumed.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – October 10th

I started writing Seizing Power, the fifth and final core story in the Rebel Cyborgs subseries (releasing in February), this week and I already love it. This story will be explosive. (grins) Power and Cadet/Eirene Ours have a tension-filled history and so much heated emotion to conquer. They will have to fight for their happy ever after and for the safety of the cyborgs’ Homeland.

This upcoming week will be spent writing more first draft chapters on Seizing Power. It is also Thanksgiving in Canada on Monday so I will be eating turkey and pumpkin pie with the Dear Wonderful Hubby. As many folks in my corner of the universe are still being careful, there won’t be any big family jams…or any outside the immediate household dinners at all. But there will be some awesome phone conversations, laughs and great food.

Have a wonderful week, my friends. (big hugs) Call a loved one if you’re able. Read a steamy romance. Look up at the stars if you get the chance to do that. We are all part of the universe and I think that’s awe-inspiring.

B Free And The Hezen Language

Some of the first scenes of B Free, the fourth core story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in November), are set on Heze 478, a planet controlled by the Humanoid Alliance.

The Hezens, the locals on the planet, have their own language. It is roughly based on the Czech language here on Earth. (I adhere to the Common Ancestor theory. Humanoids share an ancestor with humans and it is logical that languages would be similar.)

The name of Quinn’s Hezen contact, Pomoc, for example, translates to Help or Helper.

Seizing Power – Cover And Description Reveal

Woot! I have a cover for Seizing Power. I have also crafted a very preliminary, completely unedited book description for this story. The description will likely change as it is a tad bit long. I was too excited about this story to keep its description short and snappy. (sheepish grin)

The cover was crafted by the always awesome Amanda Kelsey from Razzle Dazzle Design. I think Power looks a bit like Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation, don’t you?

This cyborg believes he’s in control.

Power is the self-appointed leader of the cyborg council. Other members might debate situations. He makes the ultimate decisions.

When a threat to the Homeland is revealed, he takes command of a fleet and ventures to the edge of cyborg-controlled space to investigate. He finds a rebellion led by a mysterious upstart he calls Cadet.

The plan Power derives is simple—he’ll quickly quash the uprising and teach its leader a lesson the warrior will never forget.

NO ONE challenges his authority.

Eirene Ours might have been called a cadet by Power but she is NOT his subordinate. She is the arrogant E Model’s genetic match.

For much of her mature lifespan, she has desired the male, yearning for his dark-eyed gaze, craving his sure hands, longing for his respect.

That esteem was never granted. And Eirene Ours can no longer wait to earn it. There’s an external threat to their kind, a danger that might destroy them all.

Having lured Power to her home terrain, she now plans to use everything within her means – her fists, her daggers, her ship-destroying missiles – to pound that truth into her stubborn warrior’s thick metal skull.

The future of every cyborg is at stake. She can’t fail them.

Power will believe her. Or he will die.

Berke and Elle from Warlord Reunited remind me a bit of Cadet/Eirene Ours and Power. Both of these couples have a lengthy, emotionally-challenging history. Berke and Elle met solar cycles ago. They had a whirlwind relationship, were wildly in love.

Then Berke sent Elle away. He didn’t give her any explanation. She was too proud to ask him for one.

Solar cycles ago, Berke, a savage Chamele Warlord, found his gerel, the one being he is destined to be with for all time…except he couldn’t embrace that fate. He was fighting a series of brutal wars.

To protect his little human female, he conveyed her far from the Chamele sector. He then returned to the endless battles, concealing his pain, his anguish, his need, under a thick layer of ice.

His gerel was safe. That was all that mattered to him.

When Elle was a young bounty hunter, she bonded with an arrogant warrior on a distant planet. She was deliriously happy…for a while. Then he dumped her in a strange settlement far from his home and left, never to return.

Their parting caused her excruciating pain—both physical and emotional. She endured it, earned the esteemed role of head bounty hunter of an academy, salvaged a bit of a life from the disaster her primitive warrior had made of it.

Now, two of her bounty hunters have made the same terrible mistake. Elle is determined to rescue her friends and break their connections with their Chamele Warlords.

While she is in the sector, she plans to kill the warrior she’d once considered hers. Elle is ending her relationship with Berke…permanently.
