Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – August 28th
Grin And Bare Him, the second story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in November), remains with my Awesome Editor.
This story is a bit lighter than my other core stories. The death count is still huge. I DID write it. (grins) And there are explosions. But both Mohini and Grin cope with their respective traumas by focusing on the future.
I continue to work on the first draft of Raw Desires, the third story in the series. This is a no-holds-barred knock-’em-down enemies-to-lovers romance. I hope to release this story in February, providing everything goes well.
Enjoy these final days of August 2022, my friend. (big hugs) Eat a new-to-you type of food. Take another route to work, even if this means wandering through the kitchen (for those of us fortunate to work from home). Read a romance written by a writer with a ‘z’ in their name.

The To-Do List
I’m a huge day dreamer. I could lie on the bed all day and think about the stories I want to write. That’s a wonderful experience but it, unfortunately, doesn’t get those stories written.
The only reason I get things done is…
I put them on a to-do list.
I force myself to complete those tasks and I receive a little blip of happiness every time I cross items off my list.
This year, I used one of my hoarded notebooks for my daily to-do lists. And that makes me feel like one of the rich and famous. (grins) I’ll definitely use nice notebooks for my to-do lists going forward.

Seeing Someone From Another Perspective
Grin And Bare Him, the second story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in November), features Grin and Mohini. We first met Grin in Breathing Vapor. We met Mohini in Provoking Odium.
But we meet both of them from the viewpoints of other beings. And those other beings have their own perspectives on the world and on them.
Mohini, for example, doesn’t view herself as Briella does.
Briella doesn’t trust easily. She is cynical about other beings and the universe in general and that shows with her interactions with Mohini.
Mohini, in contrast, has secrets. She has legit reasons for doing what she’s doing, but, as no one else knows these reasons, they also don’t truly know HER.
We always bring our own perspectives to every situation and that perspective is unique to us. I find that truly fascinating and I LOVE experiencing that in stories.

Throwback Thursday – Chasing Mayhem
I love the cover of Chasing Mayhem. My Awesome Cover Artist, Amanda Kelsey, perfectly captured how truly wild Mayhem is, with his out-of-control hair and the flash of rebellion in his eyes.
Imee, his heroine, is as extreme. She’s a retriever, which is the Humanoid Alliance’s name for their forced-to-work-for-them bounty hunters. And she risks her lifespan with every fraggin’ assignment.
Kralj, the all knowing, all powerful hero of Dark Thoughts, also makes his first appearance in Chasing Mayhem.

Back To School Supplies Happiness
I LOVE school supplies.
When I was a kid, we didn’t have any money for anything other than the cheapest, most necessary supplies. So I would look at catalogs for school supplies and dream of all the pens and notebooks and markers I would buy once I was ‘rich.’
Today, I can afford some of those school supplies. And I’m a writer so those supplies are often necessary. Different colored inks, for example, stimulate different parts of our brains. I use them when the words aren’t flowing.
So I’ve been dreaming of school supplies. (grins) I plan to buy a huge pack of PaperMate Flair felt tip pens in a variety of awesome colors and, of course, a couple new notebooks.

Writing Posts In Advance And Other Jokes
I’ll share a secret with you.
I write many of my not-time-sensitive posts for Taste Of Cyn in advance.
I do this for a number of reasons.
It is easier to write blog posts when I think of them is one reason. This is especially true because I have a gazillion characters ‘talking’ in my head and I tend to forget things that aren’t the stories I’m planning to write.
I also like to post here every day and some days, I’m so excited I only want to write the current story and that’s it. Having a blog post ready to go means I don’t have to exit the writing cave.
But most of all…
I REALLY like the idea of posting after I’m dead. Yes, that’s a bit dark but I think it would be hilarious. I’m gone to the next place but I’m still chattering away happily here.

Muse Food – Toppled Trees
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were trekking along a path through the forest and we came across this toppled tree.
It was likely toppled during a wind storm.
OR maybe Mohini, the flying-impaired heroine of Grin And Bare Him, clipped it while she was flying her modified freighter over Earth.
OR maybe Balvan, the HUGE green gatekeeper hero of Dark Strength, leaned against it and accidentally flattened the tree.
There are a gazillion ways this tree could have fallen over.
What do you think downed it?

Prey And Details
I’m talking about Prey, the latest Predator movie installment, today. There won’t be many spoilers in this post so you should be okay with reading it before watching the movie.
I LOVE the Predator movies. Some of them are better than others.
Prey, the latest installment, is one of the best. If you’ve never watched any of the movies, it is a great place to start.
One of the many things I love about this movie is…
It is EXTREMELY detailed.
Almost every scene does multiple jobs.
The title is an example of this. It serves multiple purposes.
The first movie is titled Predator. Of course, there would a movie in the series called Prey. I’ve been waiting for it. (And it did NOT disappoint me.)
Prey is perfectly suited for a story featuring a heroine who goes from being prey to being a predator. (That story arc was extremely well-done.)
And I found the Predator’s relationship to beings and creatures he classifies as prey extremely interesting. This, of course, impacts his changing relationship to Naru, the heroine.
I try to put the same level of detail into my stories.

Hybrid Tomatoes
We planted four types of tomatoes this year. One (the Beefsteak) was grown from dollar store seeds. Three (Mini, Heirloom and Roma) were grown from seeds we’d harvested from bought tomatoes.
The Mini and Heirloom tomatoes grew pretty much true to their bought tomato. And wow, there are a gazillion tomatoes on each plant. The Mini tomatoes are trying to take over the garden. The Heirloom tomatoes are HUGE.
The Roma tomatoes, however, didn’t grow true to their bought tomato.
Some of them were huge (bigger than my hand) and looked like a traditional tomato. I often mistaken them for the Beefsteaks but no, they were grown from the Roma tomato seeds.
Some of them look a bit more like how I expected Roma tomatoes to look. These tomatoes, unfortunately, have a tendency to rot at the bottom (the flower end).
If I had unlimited garden space, I would harvest the seeds and see what THEY grew. Would they be different yet again? Or would they be similar to this year’s tomatoes?
I only have a small garden, unfortunately. So I won’t be running that experiment.
Anyhoo… hybrids are tricksy – both in tomato form and in sexy character form (thinks about Kralj from Dark Thoughts). We never know what we’ll get!

Throwback Thursday – Defying Death
The cyborgs’ main focus, now that they have escaped their cruel manufacturers and have settled on the Homeland, is finding their genetic matches, the beings they are destined to be with forever and perhaps produce babies with.
Not much is known about these genetic matches…
Until Death meets his scientist female, Tifara. He would do anything, would gladly trade his lifespan for one moment with his little human.
She is extremely intelligent, in an absent-minded mad scientist sort of way. And her area of focus is viruses, which, at first, she believes the pull between them is.
Tifara will soon uncover it is an entirely different type of science. (grins)
Defying Death
He’ll risk it all for one moment of happiness.
Cyborgs don’t show emotion. Death learned that lesson early in his long lifespan. To survive, he hides his fierce passions behind a stoic wall. He calls no warrior friend. He never admits to caring for any being.
Even the human female he’s destined to love.
Tifara is Death’s obsession, his sole opportunity for happiness, to express the all-consuming passion burning brightly inside him. He’ll do anything to obtain the curvaceous medic: defy a direct order, abduct Tifara from her battle station, and wage war on his fellow cyborgs.
To earn her love, he’ll have to risk much, much more.
