Vapor is the most advanced cyborg the Humanoid Alliance has ever developed. He’s a finely honed weapon, a warrior without parallel, half man and half machine. No lock can contain him. No being can stop him. Whatever he wants, he takes.

He wants Mira Breazeal, the Designer’s daughter.

She’s his one temptation, his sexy target. Vapor shouldn’t crave her caresses, steal her kisses, make her scream with ecstasy. The cyborgs want her dead and they would question his loyalty if he didn’t kill her. The humans would shoot him on sight if he dared to touch her.

Their love is forbidden. Their desire could be lethal. One human and one cyborg will risk everything for a moment of passion.

Interview With S. Usher Evans

I sat down (virtually) with S. Usher Evans for a short interview. S. Usher Evans’s latest release is Conviction (Razia #3), a Space Opera.

Cynthia Sax: What is one thing that will really excite readers about Conviction?

S. Usher Evans: The Razia Series isn’t your typical space opera in that it’s less about space and wars of humanity and more about the war within one woman’s humanity. Lyssa, otherwise known as the space pirate bounty hunter Razia, is Daddy issues wrapped up in abandonment wrapped up in snark, and topped off with a bit of sass. What I love about writing her is that she is her own worst enemy most of the time, and now that we’re in the third book of the series, we see her begin to apply the lessons of how not to destroy every relationship she makes.

Cynthia Sax: How does Conviction start?

S. Usher Evans: I like to say that the prologue from Double Life sets the scene for the entire series. Lyssa is eleven years old, with her father at the center of a mysterious phenomenon—and religious icon—called Leveman’s Vortex. Her father is a scientist, intent on discovering what makes this place exist, and Lyssa’s just there to be yelled at and be told she’s worthless. Since she learned in temple that the Great Creator is just beyond an arch with a silvery veil, she decides to go ask the Man Himself. The world begins to disintegrate as she learns the truth—she is as bad as her father has been telling her.

That one experience dominates her actions and thought processes throughout the series. The bottom line is: Lyssa does not think she’s worthy of glory, and yet she still pursues it. It’s an interesting dichotomy that is so much fun to write.

Cynthia Sax: What creates problems between Lyssa and Sage?

S. Usher Evans: Double Life and Alliances are extraordinarily light on romance, but that’s mostly because Lyssa’s too squirmy to even get close to anyone. Her long-time best-friend-but-not is Sage Teon, who has known her since she was kidnapped by Tauron Ball, the pirate who eventually became her mentor. Sage’s main problem with Lyssa is that she gets herself into trouble because her ego gets in the way, and he feels an obligation to protect her. Lyssa’s main problem with Sage is that she doesn’t want his help ever.

Sage is an incredibly complex character, one who is fiercely loyal to those he considers his family. He takes a lot of Lyssa’s bull in the first three books, and even through the fourth book, coming in February. But he finally reaches his limit with her, and then Lyssa finally gets what is coming to her.

Cynthia Sax: What advice would you give new writers?

S. Usher Evans:
Everyone has their own path, everyone has their own intentions. The trick to finding happiness is to know what will make you happy. What all that yoga mumbo jumbo means is that you have to decide what you want out of writing (to be published, to create stories, to have those stories read, to make money, etc.) and keep that in mind as you pursue your publication path (self/small press/traditional) and write books.

Cynthia Sax: Thank you for joining us today, S. Usher Evans!

Breathing Vapor And Tau Ceti

See other great SciFi romance posts here – http://sfrcontests.blogspot.ca/p/sfr-brigade-presents.html

The cyborg manufacturing facility in Breathing Vapor is set on Tau Ceti, a fictional Earth-like planet. This is a nod to the real Tau Ceti, a star, and its surrounding planets — Tau Ceti b, Tau Ceti c, Tau Ceti d, Tau Ceti e and Tau Ceti f.

In Breathing Vapor, I simply called the inhabited planet in the system Tau Ceti. My thinking is that this is how beings would casually refer to it. No being would be living on the other Tau Ceti planets so there would be no reason to distinguish it from the others.

The (real life) Tau Ceti system belongs to the constellation Cetus, situated less than 12 light years from our solar system. Its star is similar to our sun yet smaller. Of the five planets orbiting its star, two are in the habitable zone. These planets are of extreme interest to SETI. They might, just might, contain life.

In Breathing Vapor, the locals are humanoids. Before development, the terrain was mostly grassland. The locals evolved with striped green and brown skin, assisting them in blending into this terrain (similarly to how an Earth zebra has stripes to assist it in blending into its terrain).

The Tau Cetians believe that white represents death, as it would on a grassland planet. That color would draw the eye of predators. White is also the color of sun bleached bones. This belief causes problems with the newly arrived Humanoid Alliance female. White is the color of prestige for them. One species believes the color means one thing. The other species believes the color means something else. This escalates the culture clash.

We’ll be returning to Tau Ceti in Crash And Burn (releasing in February), learning more about the culture and the planet.

Interview With Harper Miller

I sat down (virtually) with Harper Miller for a short interview. Harper Miller’s latest release is Entwined, an Erotica/Interracial Multicultural Romance/Bisexual Erotica.

Cynthia Sax: What makes your heroes super sexy?

Harper Miller: Simple answer? They’re go-getters. My heroes see something they like in my heroines, and they go after the girl. No mixed signals, no I’m not sure how I feel, no sitting around twiddling their thumbs, they go after their women without hesitation. How great would it be if all men were respectfully aggressive in real life? LOL, another reason I remain single. I think in reality men forget women wish to be courted. I feel as if courting is a thing of the past. My guys communicate effectively, which makes them crazy awesome book boyfriends!

Cynthia Sax: Hmmm… I love go-getter heroes! Is Entwined part of a series and will you be writing more stories in this series?

Harper Miller: Yes, and yes! The Kinky Connect Chronicles is indeed a series, and Entwined is the third book in the series. I have a few more stories on tap that I’d like to write. I can say for certain I won’t beat a dead horse and make this a neverending series. I have a goal I’d like to attain with how many stories I write for the Kinky Connect Chronicles. I always want to keep material fresh and readers engaged.

Cynthia Sax: What is one thing that excites you about Entwined?

Harper Miller: It’s different. In most ménage stories, we tend to see an M/M/F dynamic or an M/M/M dynamic but I can’t say I’ve read many stories where the ladies are the ones who are getting down for the most part. It’s also the first story I’ve written that’s scared me to death and taken me outside of my comfort zone. I read almost all genres and I feel considering our society is quite diverse, wouldn’t it make sense to incorporate diversity into romance reads? All types of folks are having sex… but why do a majority of stories showcase specific genders or specific ethnicities? I wanted to spice things up, so I did. Not all romance and erotica readers are heterosexual or white. Readers cover a wide spectrum of ethnicities and sexual identities. It’s only fair authors highlight that. I’m hoping to do that with this series.

Cynthia Sax: I LOVE diversity in romance characters. What one piece of advice would you give new writers?

Harper Miller:
Stay true to yourself. Figure out what experience you want to give readers and what you want your brand to represent, and stick to it. Things will get rough. You will meet some of the most sweet and kind people who will continually support you, and you will meet some people who will cross your path and try to bring negativity to you door. Don’t let them destroy your inner peace.

Most importantly, write the types of stories you wish to read.

Cynthia Sax: Great advice! Thank you for joining us today, Harper! (big hugs)

After twenty years of devotion to Uncle Sam, I called it quits. I was wired and looking to get into some trouble. Trouble found me all right, in the form of a hot-bodied fox.

Little did I know how much she’d rock my world.

You’re getting one hell of a tale. This is my story.

*Disclaimer* This is a novelette. Not a short story, novella, or novel. This story features an F/F/M ménage à trois scenario. If ménage stories are not your cup of tea, and you are easily offended by threesomes and lesbian sex, you should bypass this story. Content is intended for a mature audience, 18+.

Entwined is the third installment in The Kinky Connect Chronicles. The Kinky Connect Chronicles are short erotic stories/novelettes all wrapped up in neat little bows. These stories are standalones. No cliffhangers in the lot!

The Good Assistant – Toronto, City Hall And Ghosts

One of the secondary characters in The Good Assistant is the (fictional) Mayor Of Toronto. The Mayor, of course, works out of City Hall.

The current City Hall is situated in the heart of downtown. Inaugurated in 1965, it was designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell (who unfortunately died before it was completed).

The space in front of City Hall is often used for concerts (including the New Year’s Eve celebrations). Residents wade in the reflecting pool during the summer and skate on it during the winter. I worked close to City Hall and my coworkers and I would skate on lunch hours.

If you ask where Toronto’s City Hall is, residents should know that this is the building you’re referring to. They might ask for clarification, however. Toronto, like many big cities, used to consist of many different Burroughs or smaller towns. It has amalgamated these smaller neighborhoods into a larger city. That means there are many former City Halls.

There’s even a former City Hall situated right next to the current City Hall. Called ‘Old City Hall’, this Romanesque Revival building was inaugurated in 1899. The Ontario Court of Justice is its current tenants. When you pass, you might see happy brides and grooms having their photos taken in front of the building. It is designated a National Historic Site.

For paranormal lovers, Old City Hall is said to be haunted by several ghosts. (http://www.torontoghosts.org/index.php?/2008081476/The-Former-City-Of-Toronto-Public-Buildings/Old-City-Hall.html ) Especially haunted is Courtroom 33, where you might, just might, see the ghosts of the last men condemned to hang in Canada.

Releasing Rage And My Top Writing Tip

The always awesome Nicola Cameron asked me what my top writing tip was.

http://nicolacameronwrites.com/2015/11/04/wicked-wednesday-reads-releasing-rage/

Write balls to the wall.

Get your mind out of the gutter. (grins) That saying refers to cannonballs, though I suppose it could apply to other kinds of balls also. What it means is to write that first draft all out, no filters, no thinking ‘will my agent, editor, reviewers, readers like this?’ or ‘is this sellable?’ Dump everything on the page—your words, your heart, your guts.

Half Man. Half Machine. All Hers.

Rage, the Humanoid Alliance’s most primitive cyborg, has two goals—kill all of the humans on his battle station and escape to the Homeland. The warrior has seen the darkness in others and in himself. He believes that’s all he’s been programmed to experience.

Until he meets Joan.

Joan, the battle station’s first female engineer, has one goal—survive long enough to help the big sexy cyborg plotting to kill her. Rage might not trust her but he wants her. She sees the passion in his eyes, the caring in his battle-worn hands, the gruff emotion in his voice.

When Joan survives the unthinkable, Rage’s priorities are tested. Is there enough room in this cyborg’s heart for both love and revenge?

Why I Wrote Releasing Rage

I’m on Pauline Baird Jones ‘ online home today, talking about why I wrote Releasing Rage.

http://www.paulinebjones.com/BlogWP/wrote-releasing-rage

Here’s a snippet…

I wrote Releasing Rage primarily for me. I’d already pitched the idea to my agent and she relayed that there would be little publisher interest in it. But when I finished the story, I knew it was special, one of those rare gifts a writer receives. I realized that I had to share it with reading buddies.

Second Excerpt For Breathing Vapor

Breathing Vapor, the standalone sidequel to Releasing Rage, is releasing on November 17th (you can pre-order it now).

You can read the first scene from the first chapter here: http://tasteofcyn.com/2015/10/27/first-excerpt-for-breathing-vapor/

This is the second scene.

***

The cyborgs looked at each other.

The Designer. Raw was the first to supply a name.

Heads dipped. The Designer was the mastermind behind the entire cyborg program. Every system, every abuse linked back to that human. He approved the hiring of their sadistic trainers, treated cyborgs like pieces of machinery, decided which of them would be decommissioned, orchestrating that brutal process also.

During decommissioning, the humans harvested all possible parts. To ensure these parts were functional, cyborgs were dissected alive, given a prolonger to keep them from losing consciousness. They felt every slice.

Vapor didn’t wish decommissioning on any being. If killing the Designer would stop it, he’d support that death whole-heartedly.

The kill wouldn’t present a challenge. The Designer was an older male, an engineer, not a warrior. Ending his life would be easy, too easy for his liking. A couple flicks of his wrist. Vapor slashed his daggers through the air. And the human would be dead.

A bomb could then be constructed, using materials in the Designer’s laboratory. Vapor would leave the body there, detonating the improvised explosive, and the death would look like an accident.

The Humanoid Alliance would lose one of their most valuable council members.

Though not all humans thought the Designer was necessary. There were council members who vocally opposed the use of cyborgs. They preferred weapons without traces of humanity—robots lacking the instinct that was necessary in battle, missiles launched and controlled at a distance. Given the opportunity, they’d eliminate all cyborgs.

Kill the Designer and the anti-cyborg contingent within the Humanoid Alliance will triumph. Ace voiced the same reservations. They’ll decommission all cyborgs. Millions of our brethren will die before we have the opportunity to free them.

Cyborgs rumbled, shaking their heads.

Then we kill Hun, was the next suggestion.

Hun was the final stage trainer. The would-be warrior reprimanded the cyborgs for the slightest offenses, stole supplies meant for them, pitted them against opponents with greater numbers and better weapons, hoping the cyborgs would die during training.

Hun might have proven a challenge to kill solar cycles ago. Now, he was older, flabby, addicted to fermented grain beverages. Loud sounds made him jumpy and put a fear in his eyes.

Vapor would kill him slowly, repaying Hun for the torture he’d inflicted on others. He twirled his daggers. A slice here and a slice there. The humanoid would bleed out, whimpering, pleading for a speedier death.

When the trainer’s last breath had left him, Vapor would strip him of all identification and toss him onto the pile with the deceased convicts. The corpse retrieval unit would dispose of him. He’d be ground into feed for the animals, a fitting end for a male who wasn’t much more than a beast.

The Designer would replace Hun within heartbeats. Thrasher dismissed the trainer as a possible kill. There’s a long waiting list of humans wishing for his position. He isn’t important enough for his loss to make an impact.

The cyborgs offered names of other trainers, of guards, of council members currently residing on Tau Ceti. Vapor devised a different death for each of them, the kill suiting the crime the target had committed against his fellow cyborgs.

He didn’t debate the merits of each choice, allowing the others to argue for or against the target. All of the targets deserved death. He would kill any of them without hesitation.

Mira Breazeal, Ace expressed his preference of target.

The Designer’s daughter. Vapor froze, his daggers becoming still. He’d stalked Mira since he could walk and considered her to be his, his female, his target, his obsession.

In public, she was cruel and heartless, doing and saying horrible things with a cold look on her beautiful face. But under the cover of darkness, when she thought she was alone, Vapor had seen yearning, sadness, anguish in her pale blue eyes.

His instincts said there was more to her than he knew, that she had secrets, that she might be worthy of life. That she belonged to him, his heart whispered.

His processors reasoned that she was evil and should be killed.

Ending her life would be a challenge. Although Mira had no fighting skills, she was cunning and strong and she lied constantly, something no cyborg could do. It was a dishonorable tactic, a form of cheating, but it was also an advantage he couldn’t ignore.

Mira wouldn’t be defeated without a battle. His body hardened, the thought of touching her, even in that way, arousing him.

She’s female, Thrasher argued.

Her gender was a consideration. Cyborgs were designed for two purposes—killing and breeding. The breeding program had been deemed unsuccessful and female cyborgs became unnecessary. There hadn’t been a female cyborg manufactured in twenty human lifespans. Mira was the only female any of them had seen.

She was special. She was rare. Vapor tightened his hold on his daggers. She was his.

Yes, she’s female. Ace smiled. The humans will feel her loss.

Her death would hurt the Designer, Grin added.

There was a murmur of approval. All of the cyborgs wanted vengeance on their maker, the being who brought them into this universe simply to use them, to hurt them.

Vapor was uncertain that the death of offspring would hurt the Designer. He’d never seen the male show any emotion other than impatience while he was in Mira’s presence.

She’s not innocent, Ace pressed. This planet rotation, she plans to sell one of the newly manufactured units.

That cyborg is slated for decommissioning, Thrasher pointed out. He’ll die if he stays here. Being sold gives him a chance at a lifespan and possibly freedom.

That was the challenge with Mira. There was no purely evil or purely good act with her. She sold cyborgs for credits but the cyborgs would have died otherwise. She mocked them to their faces, knowing they couldn’t respond or they’d risk being decommissioned, but that cruelty saved them from Hun’s harsher reprimands.

She’s not selling him to save him, Ace scoffed. She thinks only of the credits and of herself.

Thrasher stepped closer to his opponent. And you know that because?

They call her Mira the Merciless for a reason. Ace’s gaze dropped to Thrasher’s lips. She’s like her father.

She’s nothing like the Designer. Thrasher’s eyes glittered. She’s never killed or harmed any cyborg.

Not with her hands. Her tongue is her weapon.

They argued back and forth, focused on the issue and on each other. Vapor listened for several moments and determined that his friends would make no decision this planet rotation. The cyborgs were equally split for and against killing Mira, but they had also discarded any other possibilities.

That was significant.
