SGLSF: What were some of your favorite books growing up?
Cynthia Sax: I had so many favorite books growing up but I think it’s telling that one of them was Bambi (the Felix Salten original, not the Disney version). That was a children’s book yet very bad things happened in it. Felix Salten wasn’t afraid to hurt characters and do even worse. I remembered that while I was writing RELEASING RAGE Very bad things happen to the heroine but I had to allow these things to happen. They are key for Joan’s character development, for Rage’s character development, and for their relationship.

New Star Wars Trailer
There’s a new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer and it is epic. The more I read about this movie, the more excited I get.
Fight Over Space Rights
The fight over who owns space is heating up and giving me plenty of plot bunnies (What happens if humans claim a planet another species ‘owns’? What if we find out EARTH is ‘owned’ by another species?)
“Asteroid platinum and the briny water on Mars may soon be available for plunder, Republicans and Democrats have agreed, advancing a bill that would grant “space resource rights” and could challenge an international treaty on outer space.”
3D Printing In Space
When I first saw 3D printers years ago at the Consumer Electronics Show, I immediately thought ‘replicators’ from Star Trek. The space possibilities are endless (and gold for SciFi romance writers).
“The benefits of 3-D printing in space are clear: it would allow crews to produce tools or spare parts, helping solve the logistical challenges of long-term spaceflight. It could also be used to create structures that aren’t possible on Earth or which could not survive the acceleration and vibration of a ride into space.”
The Number Of Habitable Planets In Our Galaxy
What is the possibility of life on other planets? Pretty darn good.
Seth Shostak, senior astronomer, shares
“There is estimated to be in our galaxy alone a trillion planets. And we can see 100 billion galaxies. It’s believed that one in 10 stars may have a habitable world capable of supporting life. That’s a lot of real estate.”
He’s talking about our galaxy, not the much larger universe.
Space Weather
Are you setting your story in a grim futuristic world and you need a ‘disaster’? Consider space weather.
“The boisterous, volatile sun regularly throws off plasma, other particles and radiation that, with the right intensity and heading, could wreak havoc on modern society. In fact, extreme “space weather” recently came scarily close to slamming into Earth — and it has a shockingly high chance of knocking out power grids and doing other damage in the next 10 years, according to scientists’ best estimates.”

Breathing Vapor And Darkness
I’ve received some questions on Breathing Vapor, asking about whether or not this standalone sidequel to Releasing Rage is as dark as the first story.
It IS dark but it is a different kind of darkness. All of the stories in the Cyborg series are set during wartime. Bad things happen during wartime. Some people die. Some people are hurt.
Experiences are different. Joan, the heroine of Releasing Rage, thus far has had the most brutal personal experience of the four stories I’ve written in the series. Is it the most tragic? I don’t know. It depends on what YOU find most tragic.
All of the cyborgs have been tortured and tormented. That’s why they rebelled against their human manufacturers. But each cyborg handles that harsh treatment differently. In Releasing Rage, Rage’s torment is recent. In Crash and Burn (releasing in February), Crash starts his story as a free cyborg.
I WILL share that all of these stories are romances. They will have a romance ending. For me, that means a romantic Happy Ever After, not merely a Happy For Now.
These stories aren’t for the faint of heart. (grins) Expect the unexpected.

The Good Assistant And Next Contemporary Romance Stories

Third Excerpt For Breathing Vapor
Breathing Vapor, the standalone sidequel to Releasing Rage, is releasing on November 17th (you can pre-order it now).
This is the third scene.

I’ll investigate her. Vapor sheathed his daggers and moved toward the exit. If she deserves death, she’ll have it.
He hacked into the control panel, easily bypassing the flimsy security measures in place. The humans, not expecting cyborgs to take action, hadn’t concerned themselves with containment. The locks clicked open.
No one else touches her. Vapor looked over his shoulder, meeting first Ace’s gaze and then Thrasher’s. She’s my kill.
The two cyborgs looked at each other.
Vapor didn’t wait for a response. He slipped into the darkness, moving silently toward the Designer’s domicile. His cyborg heart beat quickly as he neared the structure, excitement heating his circuits. He’d see Mira now, smell her delicious female aroma, listen to her cock-hardening voice.
Vapor waited in the shadows for her to appear. She was the sole female in the compound, he rationalized. That was why he felt this way and why he considered her to be his. He had the top kill rate of all of the final stage cyborgs. He was more of everything, more fierce, more virile, more male. It was logical that she’d have a bigger effect on him than on the others.
The doors slid open. A curvaceous form skittered to the right, quickly moving out of the light. The doors closed soundlessly behind her.
The darkness concealed Mira from other humans, but not from a K model cyborg such as himself. His advanced vision system allowed him to view her clearly.
She was beautiful, with her full curves, pale skin, white-blonde hair and pink lips. A sheet of white was wrapped tightly around her large breasts, rounded stomach, and full hips, covering her from collarbone to ankles yet concealing little.
Seeing her body stopped his heart for one beat but it was the longing in her face that captivated him.
She leaned against the domicile, tilted her chin upward and closed her eyes, her eyelashes fluttering against her cheeks. “Vapor.” Her voice was husky, her lips parted.
He breathed in the scent of her desire. She knew he was there. Vapor didn’t understand how that was possible. He was the best. No other being could detect his presence.
Yet she always did, responding to him with a processor-frying heat. Her nipples were taut against the flimsy fabric of her garment. She hugged her torso, stroking her fingers slowly, sensuously over her arms.
He wanted those fingers curled around his hard shaft, her breath wafting over his balls, her mouth hovering near his tip. She’d be soft all over, surrounding him with curves.
His desire for her wouldn’t change her fate. Vapor was a cyborg, able to separate his machine side from his human side, to disconnect emotion from logic. He’d kill her if that were required.
But he’d enjoy investigating her first.
Mira’s panting slowed. She opened her eyes. As he watched with fascination, she donned a cold, hard mask, tucking her passion neatly under ice blue eyes, a stern jawline, downturned lips.
She became Mira the Merciless, one of the cruelest females in the universe, known for her tart tongue and ruthless nature.
Vapor wanted her even more. She was strong, defiant, a challenge any dominant male would revel in subduing. His fingers twitched, the urge to turn her over his knee and spank the chill from her countenance tremendous, that need pushing at his control.
She’d submit to him. His gaze dropped to her nipples. She couldn’t conceal her body’s response. Her musk filled his nostrils.
Mira turned her head and looked in his direction. She couldn’t see him, her gaze searching the darkness, not locking onto his face. But she was aware of him and that warmed his chest.
She sniffed, dismissing him, sending the message that she didn’t consider him to be a threat. It was a taunt he couldn’t ignore. When she strode along the path, away from the domicile and away from him, her hips swaying, Vapor followed her, aroused and intrigued.
She was a mystery and he would solve her.

Talking Sex With Christine d’Abo And Cynthia Sax
Cynthia Sax: As writers of erotic romance, many readers expect us to be sexperts. Today, we’ll chat about some of the more bizarre and fun aspects of writing in this subgenre. I’ve talked my buddy Christine d’Abo into answering these questions with me… ‘cause I’m tricksy that way.
Christine d’Abo’s latest release is the super delicious 30 Days. 30 days of sex. DIFFERENT sex. We’re not talking just missionary here. Can’t think of 30 different ways to have sex? Then you REALLY need to read this story. Be prepared to cry though. It was a three hanky read for me.
What is…
…the wildest sex scene you’ve written?
Christine d’Abo: Wild? *rubs hands together* There are a few that come to mind. Probably the two most notorious scenes I’ve written both involve food. Shh…don’t be icked out. I know some people are. The first scene is from A Shot in the Dark, and involves a condom filled with frozen peas. The hero has some fun with the heroine and confusing her body with a variety of sensations. The second scene is from 30 Days, and involves a grapefruit. The heroine uses it as an aid while getting down and personal with the hero. Yes there is a YouTube video that inspired the scene. No, I won’t give you the link (though if you type grapefruit and Auntie you should be able to find it!)
Cynthia Sax: Surprisingly I don’t have that many freaky deaky sex scenes (considering I’ve written about mafia bunny shifters). In Love, Hope, and Electricity, one of my post-apocalyptic erotic romances, the hero can manipulate electricity and uses it to… ummm… pleasure the heroine. In Americano Misto, a paranormal short, the hero can turn into mist, which means he can go where no man has ever gone before. (grins) Oh, and in Barb and the Barbarians, there’s one Barb and five, yep, count ‘em, FIVE barbarians.
…the biggest challenge you face while writing sex scenes?
Christine d’Abo: For me it’s trying to determine exactly what character trait is going to be impacted by the scene. Will they find the humor in a sexual mishap, or will they get angry? How will it impact the story going forward? What food item will they need to pull out of the fridge to solve this issue?? These are key things!
Cynthia Sax: Finding another word for thrust. My heroes are always thrusting here and thrusting there. I maintain a database of sex words and phrases. That helps with this problem.
…a (PG-rated) word you’re rather not see in a sex scene?
Christine d’Abo: Moist! It makes me think of a yeast infection. Her moist love tunnel embraced him… gag.
Cynthia Sax: Hearing about a certain female body part ‘weeping’ always makes me giggle, which is NOT the response we want to invoke during a sex scene. Get that vajayjay a tissue, folks. It has had a rough day.
…your go-to prop for sex scenes?
Christine d’Abo: Besides peas and grapefruits?? Umm, I’d have to say a flogger. Apparently, I like to inflict a little pain on these poor characters before I let them be happy.
Cynthia Sax: It isn’t a prop but an editor recently pointed out that I really like biting. Heroes are always marking their heroines with love bites, the pain accentuating the heroine’s pleasure. I think part of my problem is I’m usually hungry when I write sex scenes. That might be why I end up with so many food-related words in my scenes also.
Speaking of food…
…one food or prop you’d recommend readers never mix with sex?
Christine d’Abo: There are limits? *Cynthia leans in and whispers* Oh, yes. Right. Safety! I would say avoid using meat products in your moist love tunnels. Seriously, not healthy. And a waste of a perfectly good meat stick.
Cynthia Sax: NEVER eat spicy food before a romantic evening. I found that out in real life. Spice + Delicate Man Bits = Severe pain. Oh, and the cure for this pain is NOT a Popsicle pressed to the aforementioned man bits. That doesn’t help the situation.
…the craziest kink you’ve ever heard about?
Christine d’Abo: I read an article about some people who get sexually aroused by trees. I’m not entirely sure how that works. Plus nature walks? A veritable orgy!
Cynthia Sax: I thought tentacle sex (sex with an octopus or similar creatures) was the craziest… until today. Today, I read an article about toaster sex. I will never look at small kitchen appliances the same way again.

Famous folks bombarded Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens’s director JJ Abrams with questions in an amusing Q&A.

Close Calls In Space
