Breathing Vapor And Dolls
In Breathing Vapor, Pepe, the young Tau Cetian child, has a doll. It’s a simple doll, made out of scrap material but she loves it and cares for it, just like children on Earth do.
But how can that be? Pepe lives on Tau Ceti, 11.9 light years away. She’s humanoid, not human. Why would she play with dolls?
I recently attended an exhibition of dolls. They were all different, made of different materials, wearing different costumes but almost every culture on Earth had a variation on the doll. Dolls were placed in the Egyptian tombs as early as the 21st Century BC, and they might, just might, have been the world’s first toys.
Why?
Because dolls weren’t seen as mere playthings. Caring for dolls was training for little girls (and sometimes boys). They learned how to take care of their siblings and eventually their own children. The garments they crafted for their dolls were practice tries for human garments.
Sometimes dolls had magical, spiritual or ritual significance. Some were passed down from mother to daughter. They were important culturally.
Because Tau Cetians are humanoid and reproduce similarly to humans, it makes sense that they would also need to teach their future moms how to care for offspring. Aumakua, Pepe’s mother, is a garment fabricator also. She’d wish for her daughter to follow in her footsteps. Pepe would likely start with her doll’s garments.
Now that Vapor has learned about dolls and their importance for offspring, all cyborgs will likely craft these toys for their own offspring. Cyborgs share information. They would share their knowledge about dolls also.

Second Excerpt From Seducing My Billionaire Boss

“I didn’t know how big of a bastard you were until last week.” I jam my fist on my hips. “How dare you try to replace Mrs. Bellows after all she’s done for you? She’s your biggest supporter within the company, constantly singing your praises to everyone who will–”
“I’m not replacing her.” He places the tissue in the wastebasket. “I’m helping her. If you took two minutes and read the job posting before applying, you’d know the role I’m filling is her assistant, not mine.”
“Right.” Does he think I’m an idiot? “Then why are you interviewing candidates and not Mrs. Bellows? Why are these interviews happening on her day off?”
He opens his mouth.
“And even if you truly wanted an assistant for your assistant, your candidates have different objectives. Most of them plan to push her out of her job. They’d smile in her face and knife her in the back simply to sit in her chair.”
“Except you.”
“Except me.” I nod. “She’s a dear sweet lady, one of the nicest women I’ve ever known.”
“I agree.”
“And I plan to protect her.” I ignore his comment. “If that means taking this fuckin’ fabricated job and fulfilling all of your crazy sexual demands, so be it.”
“Sexual demands?”
“I know what you want. Everyone knows.” I glower. “Now that the no-fraternization rule has lifted, you desire a hot piece of ass that you can fuck during office hours. You’re a pig.”
“Everyone thinks this?” Rob lifts his eyebrows.
“Everyone knows this.”
“That explains the last four interviews.” He rubs his face. “The last candidate–”
“Showed you her breasts.” I glower. “I’m aware of that.” I unbutton my suit jacket and pull down my camisole, taking the cups of my bra with it. “These are breasts.” My nipples tighten in the cool air. “Cerise Case’s pair doesn’t compare to these.” I’m a big woman with a big rack.
Rob’s gaze lowers. I wait as he peruses my breasts slowly, leisurely. He obviously likes what he sees, his eyes darkening.
Silence stretches. He doesn’t say anything, doesn’t tell me my breasts are better.
“Well?” I demand.
Rob blinks once, twice. “What?”
“Are they the best you’ve seen today?”
“They’re the best I’ve seen in my lifetime.” He leans forward and inhales deeply, his nostrils flaring. “They’re even better than I envisioned.”
He has envisioned my breasts. Joy unfurls inside me. “Then I’m qualified for this job.” I cover myself up again.
He shakes his head, appearing dazed. “There are other qualifications. This is an assistant position. You’re a project manager.”
“It’s a temporary position which makes it a project.” My goal for this project is to keep Mrs. Bellows employed. “And don’t give me that ‘you’re overqualified’ bullshit.” I pace back and forth. “I finished my last project at the end of the month and have been sitting on my thumbs since then.”
“I know.”
“If I choose to take this position, that’s my business, not yours. I can do the job. That’s all you should be concerned about.”
His lips twitch. “You do realize the job is to help me.”
“It’s to help Mrs. Bellows.”
“She helps me. I’m your executive. I expect you to respect me.”
“In public.” I roll my eyes. “Have I ever disrespected you in front of other people?”
Rob opens his mouth, hesitates, then closes it again.
“Exactly, jackass. I haven’t.”
“Your language–”
“Again, have I ever cursed in public?” I shoot down this next excuse not to hire me. “Have I ever once told you to fuck off while other people could hear me, no matter how badly you deserved it?”
His forehead furrows.
“I’m a professional, Rob, and I’ll be yours to command.” I wave my hands. “During office hours, I’ll do anything you want—oral, anal, hell, I’ll let you fuck my hair if that’s your kink.”
My hair, currently confined in the usual chignon, is thick and long. It’s a vanity of mine, one of my best features, and past fuckbuddies have been fascinated with it.
Rob’s gaze lifts to the tendrils. “How would that work?”

Chapter One
Assistant to his assistant. Like hell I’m believing that fabricated title. I crumple a copy of the internal job posting, one of five that had been left on my desk.
Robert Reyes, the executive I previously believed had a heart, the man I want, the man I like more than is prudent, can call the position whatever he wants.
I know what it truly means. His sure-to-be-sexy new hire’s number one goal will be to push Mrs. Bellows, his current assistant, out of her job.
Fuck that. I toss the paper into Mrs. Bellows’ wastebasket across the hallway, nothing but net…or the wastebasket equivalent. Rob’s assistant can be a bit flighty, has been even more so over the past three months since her stroke, but she’s a wonderful woman, a capable employee, and a dear friend.
Two years ago, I’d walked into Powers Corporation’s lunchroom, knowing no one, and she was one of the first employees to welcome me, insisting I sit beside her. She introduced me to everyone, including her boss, the hottest executive in the company.
I will protect her, even from him, which is why I’ve been sitting outside Rob’s office for over an hour, watching the parade of job-stealing tramps saunter by, waiting for my turn to be interviewed.
Uncomfortably straight-backed black guest chairs are lined up against the wall, my generous ass parked on one. I’m now alone, the sole remaining candidate.
According to a friend in Human Resources, my résumé was the last one Rob reviewed. Applications closed immediately after mine was received. I have the final interview of the day.
I’ve been assessing the previous interviewees and haven’t been impressed. All of them see the position as a stepping-stone, a short stop before landing the assistant’s role.
Cerise Case, the ambitious blonde in his office at the moment, wasn’t quiet about her plans to force Mrs. Bellows’ resignation. She’d bragged that she’d make the sweet older woman cry by the end of the first week, quit by the end of the second.
I’d do anything to prevent this and it looks like anything may be required. I tug on my conservative black suit jacket. Rumors are, if a candidate is being seriously considered for the position, she’ll be asked to give Rob a blowjob during the interview.
The thought that Cerise might be down on her knees before him right now bothers the hell out of me. He wants me. I’ve seen the way he looks at me, how he makes any excuse to argue with me. Last Christmas, when the two of us had too much to drink and he almost kissed me, I’d felt how one long, thick part of him desired my curvaceous self.
But maybe he wants everyone. Perhaps the company’s no-fraternization policy was the only thing stopping him from boinking half the staff.
The unwritten rule stating that employees and management couldn’t fuck was blown to pieces when Powers Corporation’s CEO shared his bedroom with his assistant. “Mr. Reyes will see you now.” She smirks at me.

I stand, smooth down my skirt, and stride into Rob’s office, shutting the door with a bang behind me. The space smells like hot java, cedar chips, and man.
It doesn’t smell like sex, but that doesn’t mean anything. She could have swallowed.
She did kiss him. The proof of that is visible. Rob scrubs at his face with a tissue. There’s red lipstick on his tanned skin.
“Yes, remove the remnants of the last applicant.” I glare at him, wishing he didn’t look so damn handsome, seated behind his big wooden desk. His shoulders are broad, his fit physique clad in a dark suit. His chin is square and strong. His brown curly hair is so thick; I want to sink my fingers into it. That warmth I always feel whenever I see him spreads across my chest.
And that irritates me even more. “You’re a bastard, did you know that?”
“It’s hard not to know that, Miss Court.” Rob’s brown eyes spark with gold. “You tell me I’m one every time we meet.”

A Sneak Look At Crash And Burn
In January, I’ll be sharing the first chapter from Crash And Burn (releasing February 23rd) but a dear reading buddy (hugs Amy Stewart) was hankering for a sneak so I figured I’d share the first scene of chapter two.

Chapter Two
Female.
I’m not talking to you. Safyre continued to be angry with him the next planet rotation. Metal rang as she banged around her ship.
Crash wasn’t certain how he’d upset her. She hadn’t yet discovered he was a cyborg, that he wasn’t the human male she thought him to be, or that, due to her B Model communications device, he could hear everything she said or did. She didn’t realize he never planned to escort her to Tau Ceti.
Those revelations would anger her. She’d be especially livid when she discovered that, once he apprehended her, she’d never again be free.
He sat on the bridge of the ship, only half listening as Gap, his friend, chattered about kill rates and the various females in the Academy’s birthing class, females neither of them were ever likely to meet. He applied most of his processors to scanning the sector around them, looking for Safyre’s ship.
Crash had never lied to her during any of their communications. He couldn’t. Cyborgs had been programmed to always tell the truth. But he hadn’t corrected her erroneous assumptions either.
He doubted his lack of lies would dampen her ire.
“It feels strange, Rage not being here,” Gap expressed Crash’s feelings.
The three of them had been a team for over a human lifespan. Crash expected to glance behind him and see the C model’s scarred face.
“But if I was him, I’d never leave the Freedom either.” The kid’s humanlike eyes shone. “He has found Joan, his female. Why would he spend one planet rotation without her?”
Joan wasn’t the reason Rage hadn’t accompanied them. There would always be a space for her on their ship. The reason was Rage. He had no patience. The waiting would have strained the primitive cyborg’s already volatile temper. He’d have threatened to kill some being by now.
“Rage says breeding with the right female is better than battle,” Gap chattered. “Can you envision that? There’s nothing better than battle.”
Crash didn’t enjoy battle and he couldn’t envision that.
He indulged his friend’s reveries and talked about finding his female but, in his big cyborg heart, he never expected to find that almost mythical being. Crash was aware that his matte-black eyes scared others. He was also cognizant that his revulsion for violence made him different from his cyborg brethren.
He’d claim Safyre. He’d already decided that. But she would never be his true female, not like Joan was Rage’s female and Mira was Vapor’s female. The nanocybotics he transferred to her would fade, not replicate, grow weaker, not stronger. She’d age and eventually die. They’d never have offspring. She’d never love him.
But the only other alternative was to kill her. Safyre knew too much about him, about his cyborg brethren, to be allowed to live freely.
The Humanoid Alliance had manufactured him to do that, to end lives. He had the skill, the ability, and in the past, he’d had no choice. Either he killed the human’s enemies or the humans killed him.
But he didn’t enjoy killing, and, when he’d escaped from the Humanoid Alliance’s diabolical rule, he swore he’d never again take a life.
Especially not a life belonging to a reckless, orange-haired, husky-voiced female.
So he would settle for his Safyre and consider himself fortunate to have her. They’d have a diluted version of happiness during her short human lifespan, experiencing a weaker version of caring.
Once she forgave him.
He surveyed the blackness of space. That might take a solar cycle or two.
She cursed at him through their private transmission line, calling him an arrogant, ungrateful male, vowing to ‘show him’.

I loved this interview with John Boyega, the actor who plays Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I feel his excitement. As a cyborg writer, I also loved his insights on playing a Stormtrooper.
“It was so intriguing about the role. I think for me, wearing the helmet and being part of the Stormtroopers felt so strange. Like, so this is what it feels like to just be one of the many. And to look the same, and to have to do the same thing. To be under the same orders. This is what it feels like. And I was actually quite shocked as to how much Finn’s journey is investigating [that idea]. He’s a fun character, he has a very complicated history, but we get to experience the individuality of Stormtroopers, and it’s never been done before.”
