Strong Women in History and Literature by Bonnie Hobbs

Usually,I am lost in history. Especially American history, and usually immersed in thelives and loves of “Westering Women.” I think of my grandmother, mygreat-grandmother and all the greats before them. Coming from the hills ofKentucky and Tennessee, settling on farms or small-holdings in Texas andOklahoma, then trying to outrun the dustbowl into California. Thinking of themis when I think “

Anna Wessels Williams M.D.

by Diana McCollum I had never heard of Anna Wessels Williams.  Anna Wessels Williams, 1863-1954, lived life to the fullest. She was fun loving and loved adventure.  During her free time she would ride in stunt planes feeling free in the stomach-dropping danger and the exalted feeling of gliding, something not everyone could enjoy. Anna’s sister lost her baby and almost died during childbirth

Elizabeth Peratrovich. A Strong Woman by Lynn Lovegreen

Alaska has its share of strong women. One of the strongest is an historical icon here: Elizabeth Peratrovich. Elizabeth Peratrovich (Ḵaax̱gal.aat) was of the indigenous Tlingit Lukaax.ádi clan, and the grand president of the Alaska Native Sisterhood. When the territory’s Anti-Discrimination Bill was introduced in 1945, some expressed concerns that the measure would aggravate racial tensions.

Strong Black Women In History - my muses

Strong women in history. This post should be a slam dunk for Women’s history month. Yet somehow, the subject was a hard one for me. Then my thoughts went to two women I had already written about.   The first was a strong woman named Clara Belle Williams. She raised three strong sons who not only fought America’s enemies in World War II, they each became prominent physicians who helped change

You Should See Us Now - by Eleri Grace

This month's theme of strong women in literature and history is TAILOR-MADE for me and my novels! Don't misunderstand - I know so many authors are strong women and write kick-ass heroines set in all periods of history. But my Red Cross Girl heroines bucked tradition and normative gender roles for the era *before* they then went overseas and became larger-than-life heroines. I believed their

Strong Women in my Life (real and fictional) by Paty Jager

Me and JanAs a writer, I enjoy writing strong women. I feel it has taken us much too long to be seen as an equal to men, when in fact, if you scan history, it has been the woman who helped "man" get as far as he has. If not for the mothers and wives, men would not be able to procreate or have someone to tend to the people they make, or make their clothes, or feed them foods that are more than a

Re-Defining Strong Women

By Robin WeaverMycrocodile brain had an issue with this month’s theme—strong women.  In an unbiased, diversity-accepting world, wouldn’t the theme be “Strong People?” Since we don’t inhabit that unbiased, diversity-acceptingworld, we unfortunately must promote the idea that women are strong.Thedictionary defines strong first as physical strength, but the second definitionis: thecapacity of

breakfast for supper

It’s Pancake Day! I used to love ‘breakfast for supper’ meals when I was kid, and I still do. Pancakes, French toast, a quick omelette – all good options when you don’t feel like putting in too much effort. I have two favourite pancake flavours. One is blueberry – so good with those juicy pops of blueberry goodness. And the other is this one, which I’ll be cooking this evening. Pumpkin Spice
