One more Gift…Winners!
I hope your holidays were magical and full of new stories, old memories, friends and family! And I hope great things are ahead for each of you in 2019.
My year is already off and running! The deadline for TRAITOR’S GAME book 3 is this week so I’m finishing up those edits! Book 2, THE DECEIVER’S HEART, will be released on Feb 26th, so I’ll begin making plans soon for that. And I may work on some smaller writing ideas before diving into SUPER SECRET PROJECT! I’ll also be releasing my next historical this fall, WORDS ON FIRE, but more about that later!
I’ll also be on the road quite a bit this year. Through May, my travel plans already include events in California, Georgia, Japan, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

The RESISTANCE Trailer!!!
This trailer has been a long time coming, but I hope when you see it, you will understand why. It was made by my older son and husband, almost entirely in my small town, and against a green screen built in the garage of my home. The actors are my daughter, son-in-law, and other friends and neighbors.
I am so proud of the work they all did. I hope you will love this book trailer as much as I do!

Signed Holiday Books
As is my tradition, once again I am offering signed books for the holidays. If you want one for yourself or as a gift, here are your options:
Buy the books of your choice from my local indie, The King’s English Bookshop. At checkout, in ‘Notes,’ put in the name of the person to whom you want the book signed. Once I’ve signed it, King’s English will send the books to you.
You can buy the book on your own and send it to me with return postage included. Send a request for my mailing address at jen@jennielsen.com, then send me your book. I will sign and return it.
You can buy the book on your own and send me your mailing address and I will send you a signed bookplate to stick inside the cover of your book.

RESISTANCE is Released!
This week, finally, RESISTANCE will be released! You can find it in your library, in your favorite bookstore, in online bookstores, and at your Scholastic Book Fair. I hope you will check it out!
The last quote is below, this on the eve of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, in which a few hundred Jewish civilians took on the Nazi army with homemade weapons, careful planning, and courage rarely seen elsewhere.
One evening, after three months of preparation, three months of wondering and planning and hoping for 
even one day more, a man I knew only as Chaim burst into our bunker, his eyes wide with fear and only two words on his lips: “They’re here.”
The Germans had come.
Just like that, the last of the sand ran out of the hourglass.
Chaim and the other lookouts on the rooftops reported that thousands of soldiers were gathering in Warsaw, setting up camp like we were the new front line of the war, and maybe we were. It suddenly made sense why the Germans waited this long—it took time to organize an army of this size, extensive planning to prepare a ghetto of seventy thousand people for total liquidation. No doubt those were their orders.
By six o’clock, they had the ghetto surrounded.
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was about to begin.

RESISTANCE Quote 7 (and a couple of winners)

If you didn’t win, I hope you’ll still try to find a copy to read, either of your own or at your local library or Scholastic Book Fair. If you want a signed copy, I’ll be updating my events page soon and hopefully I’m coming to a place near you, or you can order by Thursday Aug 23rdto my local indie bookstore, King’s English. In the notes at checkout, tell them how you’d like the book to be signed and they’ll mail it out to you.
In the meantime, I’ll leave you with this quote from the book:
Chaya is on her way to the Cyganeria Café, a place frequented by Nazi officers and a target for her resistance group. This little known event really happened in history and was one of the first and one of the few attacks against the Nazis outside the ghetto by Jewish civilians.
The route I was given took me through a German district, since I was less likely to be stopped. Not only because of my looks, but because I knew the expectations for my behavior around the Germans. I walked in the street like all Poles did—the sidewalk was for conquerors, they said. I kept my head up and eyes focused on the road, but never looked directly at anyone. Confident, but not arrogant. Purposeful, but not driven. Formidable, but not dangerous.
I smiled at that thought. Whether I made it to the café, or if some unfortunate soldier stopped me along the way, these grenades I was carrying were going to be thrown.
One way or another, I intended to be exceptionally dangerous.

QUOTE: In this scene, Chaya and Ester are trying to figure out a way to sneak inside the Lodz Ghetto, midway between Krakow and Warsaw.
The truck passed and we walked away from the direction it was driving in. When all was clear, she said, “I can’t help it. Chaya, how can you not be afraid?”
“Because it’s not possible to be afraid all the time!” I hissed. “I feel it, but I keep it in the background. You must use fear to sharpen your senses and heighten your instincts. It will drive your determination to stay alive, but it cannot control you.”
Her hand had stopped shaking, but not because of my words. For now, she was only pretending to have her fear under control, pretending that she could face what lay ahead. And for now, that would have to be enough.
If she could pretend well enough, then one day she would feel the churning in her stomach, the sweat on her palms, the pulse in her temples, and know that she was terrified because of what was about to happen. But she would go forward anyway.
Just as I would do tonight.
Because deep in my heart, I knew this was a bad idea. That sole thought occupied my mind as Ester and I stared at the ghetto in Lodz. It was the one place we’d been told never to go, considered the impossible ghetto. And we were going in.
