Consenting Hearts by Muffy Wilson

Excerpt

She told him what she had done to herself in the ladies’ room, the slight smell of vodka and lemons on her breath escaping from full, ruby lips as he watched them move with each word and syllable. He was getting hard again; she could see the bulge in his pants. She described in detail exactly what she had done, how she felt and how it had made her feel when she emerged from the ladies’ room: strong, powerful, in control—hot. She leaned in closer and whispered into his ear.“I am so tempted to guide your hand up to the wet desire you caused between my thighs.”His bulge was quite obviously rock hard, as he no doubt remembered when she’d returned from the ladies’ room but in earnest at her seductive suggestion…“I would be less than an officer and a gentleman if I didn’t oblige. I must confess,” Dylan said, “I thought I smelled the fragrance of sex on you, and you made me hard as steel—Navy steel hard…Jesus, Sailie…” Ordinarily, a comment like that would have brought some chuckles but the two of them were dead serious, staring into one another’s hungry eyes. “Last call for alcohol. You don’t hafta go home; you just gotta go. You can’t stay here,” the bartender hollered interrupting their locked gaze.People started to shuffle around them gathering their things, collecting their coats and umbrellas, leaving. Sailie and Dylan had just gotten fresh drinks, so they had a few minutes to whisper and touch before they would have to join the others and leave. Shortly, the bartender started turning on lights and flashing them dim to high. That was the universal message that before too long, they would stay on. Sailie and Dylan were unconcerned. They had nothing but one another in their shared look. And Sailie thought of the torch singer. The piano player stood, looked at Sailie and blew out the candle on her piano. In the flicker of the burning light, Sailie saw the invitation.Dylan broke his gaze, stood and took Sailie’s elbow. “We’d better leave before they have us arrested,” he said. And they smiled, knowingly, at one another. Sailie was hoping there would be better reasons ahead to get them both arrested.“Wait. Do you mind if I give my friend, Meesa, a ride home?”“Meesa?” Disappointment hung on his voice.“The piano player.”
“Oh…no, of course not. But, I have a small car.”“No problem. I mean, would you like to have a nightcap at my house? I’ll ride with you and Meesa can bring my car when she is finished here. She doesn’t have one. You don’t mind, do you?” What could he say sporting that hard-on?“No, I mean yes! I would love to come have a drink at your house and no, I don’t mind if she brings your car. I didn’t realize you were friends.”“Well, yes, we’ve been friends for a little while. I’ll explain later. Let me give her the keys.”As they rose to go, Sailie broke away from the man who had held her attention the entire night to the woman that held it now. She bent to the young woman’s ear as she slipped a twenty into the bountiful brandy snifter and inhaled the lavender fragrance she remembered so swell. Her aroma sent an electric bolt to the moist center of Sailie’s desire.“Come to my house when you are finished, won’t you?”“Yes, of course, I will. I’ve been watching you all night, both of you, but then you knew that,” the long-legged blond with the soft fingertips answered matter-of-factly.“Here are my keys. We’ll have a drink. You will come, promise? Do you remember how to get there?”“Of course, I said I will, Sailie. I’ll be here awhile cleaning up, but I should be there in about an hour. And yes, I remember how to get there. It hasn’t been that long—just last night.”“You don’t mind him, too, do you?”“Mind? Oh, lord Sailie, no. Are you fucking kidding? He’s gorgeous. And you look absolutely radiant. Is that an iridescent blush on your cheeks? You look beautiful.”“Thank you, sugar. No, it’s not blush but excitement and a little bit of cum. See ya at my house.”Sailie kissed her ear, the twenty safely tucked in the snifter, sucked her earlobe into her mouth with a little flick of her tongue and turned to the man that had her mojo melting.“Come on, Dylan. Are you ready to go? I’ll ride with you to my house.”“Ah, sure, Sailie. You, ah…you, ah, you kissed her…?”“Yes,” Sailie turned and wiggled a wave to Meesa. “We’re close.”“Oh, well, then…”

Light o' Love

Winter blues? Light it up with one of my favorite authors and writer friends, Jacqueline George, who has written a great witch romance. If you know anything about me, you know there's nothing I love more than romance and magic, which is why I'm shining a light on Light o' Love, a fun and fully engaging story set in the 60's.

Light is a quiet, naive girl just starting college who suddenly finds herself in the world of witchcraft. Her new school changes everything, most of all her. The more Light learns about magic, the more she grows into a powerful, sexually-confident woman who finds that life is full of pleasure.

Excerpt:
Holly Pendleton balanced a pile of books in her arms and made her way out of the stockroom. She glanced over at her boss and best friend, Gracie Harlowe, at the register and smiled. She enjoyed the busy throng of people at the winter carnival and usually looked forward to it. She had worked other retail jobs in the historic downtown shopping district, but working here was a dream come true. When Gracie had called her up three months ago and offered her the assistant manager’s job, she had taken it and hadn’t looked back.Teetering on the edge of depression for months after watching her husband die of cancer, Holly was having a hard time finding the holiday spirit this year.Derek had only been thirty-four, she thought bitterly. They’d been married for nine years, but she had known him since she was a geeky freshman in high school. The hole was too big to fill, and it left her feeling empty.Still, she was grateful to Gracie for kicking her in the pants and getting her out of bed and back into the world again. Just in time for the holidays too. It was a special time that she and Derek had always shared. He would have wanted her to be happy. She laid the stack of Christmas cookie books on a festive table near the window display and straightened the array of titles. Her gaze wandered to the small kitchen at the back of the store, and she made a mental note to grab some more cookies to refill the party trays on the dessert table.“Holly!” Gracie waved her arms. “Can you grab me another stack of Fifty Shades of Grey?”She glanced at the display where the books were and found they were down to one copy. Not good. Sales had started to slow down, but erotica had been steadily increasing over the past few months. It made her laugh to see the smut novels near the holiday displays, but it made the customers happy, so who was she to quibble? Besides, she loved reading them herself.“I’ll get them!” Holly wound her way back into the stockroom and yanked a box off the overstock shelves. She grabbed a box cutter, deftly opened the box and placed the books on a cart, adding some of the second, third, and the new fourth book in the series, as they were getting a little on the low side too.Erotic romance books were one of the few things she let herself enjoy these days, and she had several customers who came back to ask her about the latest and greatest. It was a fantasy land that took her beyond the walls of hospitals and now, the silence of the apartment at night. Reading was safe. She never even considered dating again. That part of her life was over.Holly shook off the melancholy and hoofed it back onto the shop floor. Stacking the books onto the table, she arranged them in orderly piles of gray covers with erotic masks, ties, and handcuffs. She passed the romance section and gathered up some of her favorites to restock her promo shelf at the storefront. Cherise Sinclair, Kallypso Masters, Jasmine Haynes, Red Phoenix, Rachel Kramer Bussel…she loved them all. There were so many great writers that had made bondage erotica take off. Fifty Shades may have gotten the public reading again, but she had been a fan for years. Now the movie had come out for the famous books, and she wondered how it compared.Smiling wistfully, she caressed the covers and wished her husband were still with her. She missed his firm hand and their power exchanges. He had been more than just her husband. He had been her Dom. Losing him had been the collapse of her entire world. If it hadn’t been for these books and Gracie, she would still be huddled in a miserable ball, crying her eyes out and wondering why he had to die. He was so young, and they hadn’t had much time.“Can you help ring for a second?” Gracie called out and made a quick jaunt to the restroom in the back of the store.Holly moved behind the counter and smiled as a woman arrived in front of her to check out. It was a unique store, and she loved being here. Gracie had crafted a special place for book lovers, and every holiday she spruced it up beautifully. Even when she wasn’t working here, Holly loved to come and check out the newest selections and pick up a couple of items for the house. Halloween, Christmas, or whatever was happening, Gracie always seemed to have the perfect balance of home décor and books to dive into, whether it was a cozy mystery or a pulse-pounding thriller. In the early days, it had just been decoration, but now she had expanded the business to selling the trees and offering to spruce up clients’ homes. The shop was every bit as special as Gracie, and it had, over the years, become Holly’s second home, even before she started working there.Decorating clients’ businesses and homes and working behind the shop counter kept her busy. Putting up a tree gave her joy, and she saw how other lives were touched by a few twinkle lights and some tinsel. She’d done some decorations for the folks in the cancer ward, and this was a natural transition. If she could bring happiness by hanging a wreath or by delivering an order of books to a shut-in woman, then she was pleased to do it. It took her mind off the loneliness and gave her a purpose. This time of year especially. The front door opened with a blast of snowy air, and an imposing thirty-something man sporting a thigh-length leather coat blew in. His chiseled features and mass of dark hair made her catch her breath and falter in her task of ringing up the woman in front of her. The black sweater he wore under his coat looked striking against the dark blue of his eyes. The gray slacks draped over his frame, his black boots befitting the weather outside. He said nothing to her, his gaze captivated by the display of holiday decorations. How odd.He reminded her of one of the Doms in her collection of books. Heat spiked through parts of her she’d thought were as dead as her husband. She wondered how it would feel to unwrap that package.Blushing, Holly turned back to the customer in front of her. Good grief, she hoped he hadn’t noticed her staring.Holly finished ringing the books up and slipped them into a bag. She tossed in a candy cane with a card offering their holiday decorating services attached. “Here you go. Have a wonderful day.”The woman waved good-bye and shuffled out the door into the snow. Looking anywhere but at the enigmatic man in front of her, Holly fought the sensation of butterflies fluttering in her stomach. He was incredible. The way his well-built form filled the space made her eyes automatically seek him out. Warmth stirred in her lower belly, and she nibbled on her lip.“Hello. Welcome to Harlowe’s.” She fiddled with the hem of her sweater and felt a surge of heat rush up the sides of her face.Ugh. How lame was she to just blurt that out?The man raised an eyebrow, a dark and sensual smile sliding over his features. “Thank you.” His voice melted over her like chocolate, and she shivered.Holly turned away and busied herself with stuffing bags with holiday activity lists. What kind of horrible woman was she to even be reacting to another man just a year after her husband’s passing? Lusting after the man in gray. Her lips thinned. No. She wasn’t ready for those feelings. Especially not from a stranger she had seen for all of thirty seconds. She sneaked a glance at him while she straightened gift bags. He walked up to the Christmas tree in the front window and stroked its branches. Fingering the ornaments, he explored their small holiday store with a reverence that reminded her of a priest in church. Men usually didn’t bother with Christmas tree ornaments, but he was enraptured. It was mystifying.A flush crept across Holly’s face. Stirrings of longing zapped through her body as she wondered if this dark-haired stranger knew his way around a flogger. Sighing deeply, she knelt down to pick up a bag that had fallen off the counter while she worked.“Time for a cold shower tonight,” Holly mumbled. Sensing someone in front of the register, she stood.“Hi. Did you need help finding anything…?” The very source of her temptation stood right in front of her. Oh God. She wanted to reach right across the counter and run her tongue over those amazing lips.

Holidays in Hell is the beginning to my new series, Demons in Darkness. The next two books will be released in 2016.

I'd look like [image error]  Nina Agdal or Lily Aldridge or Chrissy Teigen.

The only available upgrade to me is hard work in the face of obstacles, perseverance over painful disapproval and ignorant bullies, loving myself despite the demons in my head pushing their perception of success and beauty and propriety.

I've gone so long allowing external forces to hold me down, beat me up. No more.

I'm going to write my ass off, do what I love. And if when others don't love it, I will write through the pain of rejection.

Sneak Peak of Spellbound

Check this out! Here's a quick sneak peak of Spellbound, an erotic romance fantasy I'm writing for a short story collection titled Enchanted:

Linden
blended with the other witches at the Kansas City coven about as well as a poor
woman fit in with shoppers at the Country Club Plaza. And she would know since
the nearest portal-mirror to the covenstead had spit her out in a BCBGMaxAzria
dressing room on Nichols Road.

While
there was no place like home, she was not happy to be here.

The only thing worse than rich
bitches is rich witches,
she
thought as she worked her way through the elegantly dressed crowd of magical
practitioners who eyed her like a lost leper.

“Goddess
help us, even the lotus leaf incense can’t mask her stink,” a tall,
twenty-something woman said.

Linden
stopped and squinted past the woman’s muddy gray aura. Karma was already
working on the anorexic, haute couture model-wannabe; her power was dwindling
faster than her looks. Linden laughed in the woman’s sharp-boned face and kept
walking.

Still, Ms.
Anorexic wasn’t wrong. The coven’s expensive incense couldn’t mask the smell of
the booty call spell she had cast to find a magus, a male witch, for a one
night stand. To everyone but the one, she reeked. But to him, she should smell
like a sex kitten.

He was
here—the divination pendulum had pointed to the KC covenstead—which was the
only reason she had come home and taken the remote chance that someone would
recognize her.

In the
middle of the room she turned in a slow circle, taking in the faces of the
magi, looking for a response to her blatant invitation.

She needed this,
needed him. One of her own kind. Someone who understood magic. Who could match
her breath for breath. Stroke for stroke. Spell for spell. A man she wouldn’t
scare off.

She returns to her children and her life. With Jeff’s death his business and their income are also gone. Jenny, a novelist, hasn’t written a book in years, so she must move back to her childhood home in Summer Haven, Florida, where years before she and Jeff destroyed a sadistic family of vampires.

At least her brother, Joey, who owns a local diner, is there to help them.

But Jenny has no appetite. She’s edgy. Her eyes hurt. Could be trauma from the attack. Grief. Until one night, after they’ve moved into the rundown family farmhouse, she can’t resist the night woods or drinking animals’ blood.

Gradually she accepts the truth. Her attackers were vampires. Now she’s becoming what s he once hunted and fears she must either kill herself or run. She can’t abandon her children, but promises herself never to drink human blood; to find a way to live in the human world. It’s not easy. She fights to be a good mother and not let the blood lust overpower her. Gets a job and attempts to fit in.

People, bodies brutalized and emptied of blood , begin dying. Like years before. With her blackouts, she fears she may be their killer and confides in Joey. While a Detective, investigating her husband’s and his daughter’s murders, complicates things.

Jenny suspects it’s her attackers doing the killings. They’ve found her and demand she joins them–or her family will die. When she resists, they kidnap her children; to save them, she becomes part of their killing spree. Becoming a monster like them…until she finds a way to outwit and ultimately destroy them.

In the end it takes supernatural intervention, a ghost, and the help of a childhood friend to set her, and the world, free from the vampires once and for all.

Dinosaur Lake

Kathryn Meyer Griffith is here today to talk about her novel, Dinosaur Lake!

Dinosaur Lake’s
Backstory Essay

By Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Of
all my 16 novels Dinosaur Lake has the strangest story attached to its creation,
death and rebirth…20 years later…of any of them.

Not
so much because, as a few of my books, it took so long to write or publish, but
because in 1993 it was contracted, edited and the final galleys had been
proofed by me for a 5th  paperback
book release from Zebra (Kensington Publishing) after 3 earlier novels with
Leisure Books. I even had a stack of the full-color, printed and embossed
covers; it was only weeks before it was to go to the bookshelves (in those days
the brick & mortar stores were still king, no Internet or ebooks). I
strongly believed it’d be my breakout book. You know, the book that’d make my
career and launch me into the stratosphere with Stephen King and Anne Rice? How
wrong I’d be. But, hey, I thought who wouldn’t love a tale of a cunning but
malevolent rampaging prehistoric dinosaur living in Crater Lake, Oregon, and
the Park Ranger who, along with a ragtag gang of heroes who’d try to stop it? I
mean, I’d always loved anything about dinosaurs…dinosaur books, playing with those
little plastic figurines and watching old stop-action dinosaur movies of the
1950’s and 60’s…who hadn’t?

Apparently
someone. My new editor at Zebra.

By
1994, after four novels with them, I’d lost my sweet editor there and a new one
took her place...and over the next year he didn’t like anything I wrote for him and later that year Zebra unceremoniously
dropped me and my book (Predator…which
never came out but still lingers to
this very day like some weird ghost book in every computer on the global
Internet) only six weeks away from going
to the bookstore shelves. When we were editing the book and deciding on the
title and the cover, I’d begged the new editor not to call it Predator (his choice as they hadn’t
liked my American Loch Ness Monster
title), bad title since there was a popular movie out of that name and the
movie, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, was nothing about a dinosaur, and the cover
was awful, an empty boat on a lake…what!!! Having that book–my first ever–dumped
like that was a crushing experience, let me tell you. I had a stack of
finished, printed covers and my final edits were done! But nothing my agent or
I could say or do would change their minds. They said they were cutting their
horror lines and setting adrift a lot of their mid-list horror authors because
horror (in 1994) was on the decline. The new editor-that-didn’t-like-my-writing
explained: “And no one wants to read a
book about a dinosaur.”
Yeah, sure.

And
six months later Jurassic Park the book came out! We all know how that story
ended, don’t we? People loved the book, the movies; they loved dinosaurs.

I’ll
never know the real reason they cut the book but that male editor never bought
another book from me…which was another weird thing because when I’d met him in
New York (I went for a Horror Convention) in the summer of 1993 he’d taken my
husband and I out to lunch and gushed over me and said how much he’d loved my
last release WITCHES. Hmmm.

Anyway,
I got to keep my advance but the book was officially dead. It never came out. I grieved.

I
was so disgusted I stashed it in a drawer somewhere and tried to forget it.

Until
now. After I’d finished revising and rereleasing all my new/old 15 books (and besides paperbacks they’re in ebooks
for the first time ever) from Eternal Press/Damnation Books in June of 2012 I remembered
about my American Loch Ness Monster novel, took it out and reread it.

Whoa,
like a lot of my older novels now
years later I could see what was wrong with it and how to fix it. Back then I
hadn’t seen the head-hopping I did or the awkward phrasing, stiff or overly
dramatic dialogue, repetitive words and other things I’ve learned since to
recognize and stay away from. Of course, computers help make the editing so
much easier. I think I’d done the original book on my electric typewriter.

Anyway,
telling myself the dumping of that book had been a turning point in my writing
life–sending me in the wrong direction for a long time apparently…I couldn’t
sell a book for eight long years after that–I decided to rewrite and finally
release it. In fact, I was going to do something that twenty years ago would
have been unheard of and frowned on…self-publish the book myself. With Kindle
Direct. For the first time in forty years I was walking away from the
traditional publishers and going on my own. Thank you J.A. Konrath’s blog! I
figured I could sell the Kindle ebook a lot cheaper and, thus, use it to introduce
(as enticement) more readers to my writing and perhaps, if they liked it,
they’d buy more of my other fifteen novels, novellas and various short stories.

It
could work, right?

So
here it is, retitled, rewritten, updated and with an amazing new cover I love by Dawne Dominique… Dinosaur Lake. I hope my readers will like it.

About Kathryn Meyer Griffith...

Since
childhood I’ve always been an artist and worked as a graphic designer in the
corporate world and for newspapers for twenty-three years before I quit to
write full time. I began writing novels at 21, over forty years ago now, and
have had sixteen (eleven romantic horror, one historical romance, one romantic suspense,
one romantic time travel and two murder mysteries) previous novels and eight
short stories published from Zebra Books, Leisure Books, Avalon Books, The Wild Rose Press,
Damnation Books and Eternal Press.

I’ve been
married to Russell for thirty-four years; have a son, James, and two
grandchildren, Joshua and Caitlyn, and I live in a small quaint town in Illinois called Columbia, which is
right across the JB Bridge from St.
Louis, Mo. We have
three quirky cats, ghost cat Sasha, live cats Cleo and Sasha (Too), and the
five of us live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I’ve been
an artist, and a folk singer in my youth with my brother Jim, writing has
always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I’ll probably write
stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes.
