Welcome to our Party! We've got freebies and a contest for you!
"Boots and Saddles!" the cry rings out and the Youngs come running. We have long used the old cavalry call to tell our children to gather up, it's time to "ride out" (get in the van and leave
. I can't even remember where we first heard it or when we first started using it, but it's only one of a myriad of quirky things that we do just because we're Youngs.
We long for our children to serve Christ. We want them to share their hearts with us and to follow us as we follow Christ. We believe...

Minding Your Own Business – Your Own Business To Mind!
I grew up in an entrepreneurial family and I have to confess that when we were first married, I thought it was great that Hal went to work and then came home and was done. Over the years, though, life as an employee changed: more hours, less security, less freedom. We also grew to need more time and flexibility for ministry. Working together as a family like we did growing up looked more and more...

Please Pray for Katie
Dear Friends,
As many of you old friends know, our baby Katie has an electrical problem in her heart – when we found it when she was two weeks old, her heart rate was 278 beats per minute! We nearly lost her, but God graciously spared her life. Tomorrow she is having a dangerous, but necessary test to see if those extra electrical pathways are still there. I'd be grateful if you'd be praying for her.
We've had a lot of challenges this year with Katie's heart and Hal's cancer. The love...

Celebrating Boys: Hands-On and Hearts-On Education
One thing we hear all the time is how hard it is to get boys to "sit down and do schoolwork" and when I look back at the most effective learning we've done, it's been when it was hands-on, hearts-on education. Such as when we toured Civil War sites in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania on a family camping trip one year. A few months later, our boys participated in a History Fair. Our then-six-year-old had done a salt map of Bull Run/First Manassas. Afterward, an elderly gentleman came up...

Raising Real Men is highly recommended by Teaching Good Things!
Kathy Brodock of Teaching Good Things says:
Raising Real Men should be a regular bed-side read. It's practical advice on raising godly young men was such a great reminder! Mothers, particularly, need to read this book. There is so much we need to understand about our boys' differences, and understanding those differences is crucial to their growth and character development.
I loved what married-team authors Hal and Melanie Young emphasized regarding the importance of our training to evoke...
Saving Money, Finding Treasure and Math – Today's Celebration!
We are so excited about the official release of Raising Real Men! This is something we have poured our lives into and it is very exciting to see God using it for His glory. It encourages us to read comments like:
"Just received the book over the weekend. By page 2 1/2 of the introduction I knew I had to read the entire book. By page 23 I was crying. So far, every paragraph begs for the next one to be read. And I don't even have boys. God has blessed me with three girls." Ken Porter
"I'm...

Bearing One Another's Burdens
Hey guys, some of you may be familiar with Jeff & Kate Estes of Hands and Hearts history kits and their awesome blog but we didn't meet them until last year when they reached out to help us deal with the financial aftermath of our little Katie's heart problem. Their love and good counsel was a critically important part of God's provision for us. Well, they knew how to reach out to us because of what they have been through.
Their absolutely adorable 3yo, Noah is suffering from the terrible and ...
Boys, Violence, and What About It
Here's a great essay from the journal First Things – Sally Thomas' thoughts on boys, violence, and how to think about them:
What I think I have come to understand about boys is that a desire to commit violence is not the same thing as a desire to commit evil. It's a mistake for parents to presume that a fascination with the idea of blowing something away is, in itself, a disgusting habit, like nose-picking, that can and should be eradicated. The problem is not that the boy's hand itches for...
