In Search of Heroes? Try Our New Podcast!

One of the things we emphasize with our sons is the need to follow real heroes, not fanciful or dubious characters. History is full of great examples, and an interesting source is the book Hero Tales From American History, written by Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge.  These short stories published in 1895 are lively, interesting accounts that illustrate integrity, courage, persistence, and other great "manly virtues."

We're launching our new feature, the Raising Real Men Podcast...

Green Chili Casserole

[image error] Here you go, folks! Here's the recipe I converted for bulk cooking at the CHAP, SHEM, and MPE conferences in the last few weeks during my Sanity's in the Freezer workshop.  This delicious recipe was given to me many years ago by Robin Graff-Spies when we lived across the street from one another and our children were young. Happy memories!
Green Chili Casserole

1 1/2 lb hamburger

1 medium onion, chopped

1 pkg flour tortillas

1 can cream of mushroom soup (or homemade version from white sauce)

The Way to Play It

As one commentator said it, there's honesty, and then there's Brian Davis.  Last Sunday at the PGA Verizon Heritage golf tournament, Davis was in the running for his first PGA championship when his ball rolled off the 18th green.  :

Wow. What a strange ending. Brian Davis called on himself what he thought might be a penalty when his club made contact with a twig on his backswing from the hazard left of the 18th hole. It had zero impact on the shot, but was a rules...

Finding A Reason

"It has not been easy being your dad, but it has been great. Greatness never comes with ease. I am proud that you are my son."  A father looks back on his son's 17th birthday and finds meaning in tragedy and blessing  in difficulty.  Read the whole letter.

Learn to Study the Bible: A Review and A Contest!

When I first heard of Andy Deane's new book, Learn to Study the Bible, I was drawn to it because I have been looking for years for something to help our sons to dig a little deeper when studying the Word of God. This book is a great start.

Learn to Study the Bible grew out of the author's effort to teach the youth in his church inductive Bible study methods with, at first, little success. His search for an easy to teach and understand system led him to realize that there were many approaches t...

Men, Marriage, and Terrorism

The earliest chapters of Scripture, God states "It is not good for man to be alone."  There are many ways this works out in everyday life, but an interesting article in The Deseret News says that marriage even plays a key factor in recruiting — or suppressing — suicide bombers in the Islamic world.

The study by professors at Baylor and Brigham Young University found that Islamic marriage traditions — multiple wives, dowries, and very expensive wedding ceremonies — means younger sons often...
