Week Ending 17th June 2012 - A fantastic reception from Torbay Schools

Hello Everyone...

With the disappointment of missing the Wychwood Festival in Cheltenham last weekend behind me because of a niggling back injury, I was determined not to miss any more events. So I dosed myself up with strong painkillers and headed off to some local schools in Torbay.

This week I've been very busy visiting schools in my local area to present the Amazing Adventures of Bradley Baker to over 1200 students! The author visits are helping the children to learn about the story lines and main characters in the first three Bradley Baker adventure books. All KS2 school children in the Torbay area have been invited to enter a literacy competition to win Waterstones Gift Cards and a chance for their written work to appear in the third book... "Bradley Baker and the Pyramids of Blood"!

I visited four schools this week. Starting at Torre Primary on Tuesday followed by Brixham Primary, Ilsham Academy and finishing on Friday at White Rock in Paignton. The reception I received at all the schools was fantastic and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the teachers and students for making me feel so welcome.

Here are a few pictures from the events;-

I will be returning to White Rock on Monday to sign more books for those children that were unable to attend this weeks presentation. I'll also be revisiting Brixham on Monday to see all the wonderful Bradley Baker pictures painted by the children in year 5. There will be some more photo opportunities and I'll post them here next week.

All the best for now and catch you again same time next week... DLJ

Week Ending 10th June 2012 - Wychwood disappointment

The week didn't get off to the best of starts... a recurring back injury has been niggling me for some time and has ultimately forced me to withdraw from the Wychwood Children's Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse at the weekend. This was a cruel blow, as I was really looking forward to taking part in my first Festival of the year. Special thanks go out to my festival contact Josie and Barbara at Waterstones for their support. I sincerely hope that all the other children's authors who attended the event had a great time. Hopefully, I will be be able to make up for my absence next year!

On a more positive note, I received a request from Michele Darmanin asking if I was able to donate one of my Bradley Baker adventure books to the school children of Viwa Island, Fiji. Of course, I obliged without hesitation and if you would like more information about this very worthy cause, please send Michele an email to heart2heartsydney@yahoo.com.au or check her out on FB; https://www.facebook.com/#!/ShellyBel...

I have spent some quality time on the third Bradley Baker adventure book "The Pyramids of Blood" ... it took some getting there but I finally broke through the 40,000 word count barrier! I'm getting to my favourite part of the plot line and the words should flow even faster over the coming weeks. Remember, you can pre-order the book ready for its release in September either from Waterstones or Amazon or Gardners Books!

Finally I'd like to thank all my Facebook Friends, who have liked the Bradley Baker page. You have been really great and the number of likes have passed the 70 mark. I would be most appreciative if you could please "like" the new page on Facebook and spread the word about the new boy hero! Here is the link... https://www.facebook.com/thebradleybaker  Thank you :)

I have four school events scheduled for the coming week and hopefully the back pain will ease off so I can spend some important time with the students. These visits form part of a Torbay wide literacy competition that has been organised... with the overall winner having their written work edited to appear in Bradley's next adventure.

That's all for now... hope to catch you all same time next week. DLJ

Week Ending 7th June 2012 - Birthday Wishes

I have been writing non-stop all week (well not quite non-stop but it certainly feels like it) so its going to be difficult to comment on much else and complete a blog entry without giving away too many plot lines from my next Bradley Baker instalment... the Pyramids of Blood. Well obviously I'm not going to spoil it for the Bradley Baker readers so I thought I would be totally self indulgent and dedicate this particular blogspot to my birthday, which I celebrated last Monday... and to the way a single day in your life can gauge just how effective social media is on shaping your future. Just over a year and half ago I joined Facebook and Twitter to start sharing my writing experiences and my journey as an author with others. It's amazing how social media has changed the way we interact with each other in many different and diverse areas of our lives. In particular, where my wriiten work activities are concerned... during the last twelve months the awareness of my Bradley Baker children's adventure books has grown dramatically, which is fantastic. A good example of how social media relationships grow over such a short period of time on cyber-space can be gauged by the responses I received on a single day this week. As mentioned, I celebrated my birthday and the same time last year I received some happy returns from a handful of FB followers... a dozen to be exact. However, this year I received over 90 messages to celebrate the anniversary of my birth and I feel this demonstrates very well just how strong social media friendships can become and have developed over such a short period of time. I was blown away by the attention received and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all my FB friends that sent me birthday wishes this year and I honour you all here; Melissa Studdard, Barry Stone, Zoe Powell, Tracey Jones, Zoe Jones, Phil Trenfield, Jane Lovering, Mandasue Heller, Elaine Manton-Rattee, Adrienne Hennessey, Clement Hendrix, Athina Paris, Giles Paley-Phillips, Sue Hyams, Susan K Franklin, Aquablast Drains, Jane Harris Dickinson, Rikin Parekh, Sheri Larsen, Bev Jepp, Denise Parton Plunk, Nikki Mutch, Gabrielle Balfour, Meg Sanders, Darran Lambe, Martha McCabe Current, Pauline Elizabeth Kerslake, Andrew Birbeck, Joe Whittington, Dan Tunstall, Market-Harborough Waterstones, Jeanne Hogle, Kitty Dinners, Deborah Carr, Laura Goodall, Christoff Rodriguez, Annabelle Bryant, Nell Dixon, Bobbie Derbyshire, Jeannette Towey, Dee Shulman, Annaliese Matheron, Vanessa Harbour, Mark Goddard, Kathryn Evans, Thomas Taylor, Suzan Collins, Geraldine Finnegan Gaul, Francesca Nield, Helen Stirling, Kimberley Chambers, Lee Howell, Julie Cole, Sammy Deen, Barbara Spencer, Melissa Spencer-Jones, Anita Loughrey, Kizzy Kemp-Gee, Lobke Gill, Mike Walsh, Johanna Farrell, Steve Rolfe, Nikki Goodman, Sam Jones, Wendy Phelps, Trauma F Newell, Trish Thomas, Susan Halley, Helen Robinson, Penny Jones, Becky Bettesworth, Carrie Jones, Nancy J Para, Remarkably Raven, Authors ArtistsMag, Leesa Link, Sue Whitehead, Steve Travers, Nick Gunning, Bev Tregunna, Nicky Lewis, Tom Kilpatrick, Laura Hooson, Colin Page-Smith, Sarah Lee Thank you so much for taking time to send me your messages :) On a quick note I was really pleased to receive confirmation this week that pre-orders are starting to come in for the third book in the Bradley Baker series. This is very encouraging for pre-sales in September when the Pyramids of Blood will be released. This is also having a very positive knock on effect for the current sales of books one and two. Thank you to everyone who has purchased a copy of my Bradley Baker books so far. I'd like to finish this week by congratulating my very good FB friend and author Giles Paley-Phillips for winning the children's award for the peoples book prize. His picture book The Fearsome Beastie is a great read and I'd recommend anyone with very young children to purchase a copy. That's all for this week. Catch you again this time next week. David :)

Week Ending 27th May 2012 - Third book taking shape nicely!

Totally fell into a creative time warp of words this week... started and finished a mind blowing "write-athalon" culminating in in over 10,000 words being contributed to the third Bradley Baker adventure "the Pyramids of Blood". I'm really excited about this new adventure in the series and pleased to say that all the Bradley Baker fans patiently waiting for the new boy hero's third installment (which is still on track for release during September)... will not be disappointed. The book is really taking shape nicely and I'm very pleased with how the plot lines are developing.

I'm also looking forward to the start of June because KS2 students at schools in the Torbay area will be entering their creative writing tasks into my Bradley Baker competition. The judging will take place in July and the overall winner will be rewarded with their work being edited and published to appear within a chapter of the third book.

My writing is taking most of my time at present so not much else to shout about... and I don't want to give away too much so as to spoil it for all the Bradley Baker fans!

So catch you all next week with some news of my four up and coming library events, to which I received an unexpected invite a few days ago.

Thanks for reading and have a great week ahead. :)

Week Ending 20th May 2012 - Preparing for Wychbold

Received correspondence this week from the Wychwood Festival confirming my arrangements from the event organisers... I'm really looking forward to presenting my Bradley Baker adventure books in the Waterstones Marquee on Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th June at Cheltenham Racecourse. I'll be talking to the lovely folk of charming Cheltenham and visitors to the festival for about an hour on each day... both sessions will start at 1.30pm. You can find out more information about my activities at Wychbold by clicking on the following link... http://www.wychwoodfestival.com/david-lawrence-jones/ and you'll find lots more about what's going on at the festival too.

Moving away from my book activities for a moment... later in the week I called in to Haddons Gallery at Torquay's harbourside to see my good friend and artist Becky Bettesworth. Becky's work is currently on  display in the gallery and you can also check out her fantastic commissions at http://www.beckybettesworth.co.uk/

Back to Bradley Baker... I've been working on some brilliant ideas for props this week. These will feature in my up-and-coming school events but I'm not going giving too much away at this point... I'll wait till they are finished then I'll post some pics. Watch this space!!!

That's it for now... catch you next week :)

Week Ending 13th May - Very inspired by Vinspired!

This week was totally dominated by the Vinspired awards with "The Power of Stories in Torbay" - Young writers were invited to enter their 500 word short stories with the theme "Changing the World for the Better.
Team v is a new program run by the national charity Vinspired, which gives 18 – 24  year old volunteers who want to encourage positive change in their communities the chance to become effective social campaigners whilst gaining valuable leadership skills. Team v leaders run a variety of projects throughout the country, and their current project was aimed at improving literacy among children through the power of stories, and encouraging children to use their imaginations and have fun with creative writing.
As part of this project Louise Gaubert, Team v leader for Torbay, organised the story writing competition for local children aged 7-11. The ‘Torbay Stories’ competition encouraged local children to let their imaginations run wild. Over the past month, school children across Torbay have been busy writing their stories of up to 500 words on the theme of ‘Changing the World for the Better’. A short-list of eight stories were subsequently judged by myself and two other local authors, Ellen Renner and Myfanwy Cook.
A talented young writer called Nicole Burns from Ilsham C of E Academy School won the competition and a signed copy of “Warhorse” by Michael Morpurgo. Two other highly commended stories were selected and the awards went to Rueben Renton and James Rowe, who won signed copies of my first children’s adventure book “Bradley Baker and the Curse of Pathylon”, plus there were more great literacy prizes for all the winners.
All three winners of the “Torbay Stories” competition received their prizes during an awards ceremony, which was held at Torquay’s Central Library in Lymington Road on Saturday 12th May  and I was quoted on the day as saying; "It's a great privilege to be involved in this local incentive for local children and it's also an excellent opportunity to recognise the work that vInspired carry out within our community."
Here are a few of the pictures taken during the event;-

Checking out the winning stories in Torquay Central Library
Oh nearly forgot to mention... I wrote another 5,000 words towards my third Bradley Baker adventure "the Pyramids of Blood"... taking the total word count so far to just over 30,000... so all in all, a very successful, productive and rewarding week.
Catch you again same time next week.David :)

Week Ending 6th May 2012 - writing, writing and more writing...

I really managed to get ahead with writing the new book this week and a good job too!!! I was starting to get a little concerned that the deadline for Bradley Baker and the Pyramids of Blood would be missed. End of June seems a long way off but with another 70,000 words plus editing, I'm glad I managed to pen 5,000 words this week... and most importantly the words flowed well and they all stayed in the draft manuscript.

The Torbay school visits in June are all secured in the diary now and I've been working on the related KS1 and KS2 exercise sheets. I've decided to let the children enter a Bradley Baker competition to coincide with my visits. Should be fun and the winner will get to have their work edited & published in Bradley's third adventure. I'm really excited about this project and it's nice to involve children in a literacy exercise of y very own that has such a rewarding initiative to work towards.

This week I also found time to judge the Vinspired Torbay Literacy Competition for local school children, who had entered their work under the theme "Changing the World for the better!" Vinspired is a national charity encouraging 18 to 24 year olds to get involved in local community activities. Louise Gaubert is the V Team Leader for the Torbay project and I'm looking forward to meeting her and the winners at the prize giving ceremony on Saturday 12th May... at Torquay Library. Local press, TV and Radio have been invited and I've also donated signed copies of my first Bradley Baker adventure book to the three winners.

Hey and some great news... here's a quick SHED UPDATE....!!!! At last the sun shone through the clouds this week and allowed enough time for the "Writing Shack" roof to be mended... so no more raindrops falling on my manuscripts!!!

Finally, I thought I'd post some artwork from my publisher this week... this just shows off the talented Abie Greyvenstein's work in perfect style. Three stages are shown from initial sketch to finished artwork for the new front cover image... Bradley Baker the Pyramids of Blood. I love working with Abie and it means I get to keep control of the illustrations as well as the narrative.

Well thats all for this week... take care all and catch you again same time next Sunday.
Best wishes, David :)

April 29, 2012

Week Ending 29th April - Shed Damage dominates the week!

The weeks activities were dominated by the unfortunate sequence of events with regards to my writing shack in the garden. I interrupted my Facebook updates with an unimportant "tongue-in-cheek" news bulletin.... "Torquay Shed Roof Survives the Night"; following the meteor strike, the tarpaulin has held well and the water level in the bucket has not increased... we'll keep you posted and stay tuned in to this channel for more Shed updates! The meteor was actually a fallen rock from the cliff that stands imposing at the rear of my property and the poor old shed sits directly beneath it. Any rainy weather tends to disturb the odd stone and down it comes... and this occasion right through the roof. The posting on my profile time line attracted a very humorous response from some of my fellow "dry-sense-of-humoured" FB friends. I find it funny how such unaffected topics such as SHEDS can muster up a furor of interest. Whereas boring stuff like info on my very important book activities doesn't seem to conjure much interest. It's a funny old world.... ramble, ramble! The middle of the week was spent writing... Hurray! Yes writing... something I happen to enjoy and the thing that contributes to my livelihood in a very monstrous way! Another few thousand words found their way into the third Bradley Baker installment and the Pyramids of Blood is coming along just dandy! Really excited about this book and I can't wait for it to be published in September so I can share another adventure with what is now a pretty impressive legion of Bradley Baker fans. More emails to schools and follow up calls for the Torbay Literacy Competition filled the rest of my time. The lack of Waterstones events at the moment has taken the shine off the public awareness campaign for Bradley, but I need the break from the stores to get everything else on course to secure a successful year ahead for the new boy hero. I issued another SHED UPDATE this morning: What's going on with this weather??? First a meteor strike hits Torquay and happens to land directly on my shed roof... Now Hurricane Humpty Dumpty is powering through the bay and has ripped the tarpaulin off! Not impressed... spent half the day battling through the perfect storm to reattach temporary covering. Have you ever tried to form a perfect folded square out of a gigantic piece of tarpaulin that was originally used as a ground sheet for moon base alpha... with the wind howling round your lugs? Brings back memories of certain camping holiday! "Reduce the size of the tarpaulin!" I hear shouts from cyber world... now that would be far too easy :) Too much shed stuff... Promise to change the subject next week. See you then, David

Week Ending 22nd April - School Visit Planning

I managed to achieve my main objective this week and that was to complete the school visit information pack for the up-and-coming Bradley Baker Torbay Literacy Competition in June. Another six schools confirmed their participation in the project... Torre, Ellacombe, Shiphay, Sherwell Valley, Brixham and White Rock. Another week before the deadline for entries and It's looking like the majority of the bay's schools will be taking part. There's some great prizes to be won for both KS1 and KS2 pupils including; Waterstones book vouchers and the chance to have their written work included in the third Bradley Baker book.Speaking of which... I completed another 1500 words (not enough but I have been busy with other bits and bobs) this week and "the Pyramids of Blood" is really starting to take shape with some fantastic new characters being introduced into the latest Bradley Baker adventure... I've broken through the 20'000 word count and I especially like a new school boy character called Jefferson Crabtree that I introduced into the storyline this week. He is from Hudson Valley New York and he will play a very important role in the latest adventure. The third book is still on course for publication in Sept 2012 and I'm really excited about Bradley's latest exploits. With no Waterstones event Saturday, I managed to complete a few jobs around the house (which pleased my wife immensely). I was up on the roof and kicked off some moss (literally)... as Elton John wrote in the the lyrics to Our Song (one of my favourites by he way)... Now I'm waffling!Next week will definately be a writing week... it has to be, I have to get ahead with the next book as I need to complete the draft manuscript by end of June. Not panicking... Yet!I will also have to put some time aside next week to read some competition entries for the charititable organisation vInspired. Local children in Torbay have submitted a 500 word piece entitled "Changing the world for the better". I will be joined by fellow judges Ellen Renner and Myfanwy Cooper. I'm really looking forward to reading the children's written work and it's a great honour to have been invited to judge such an important project. That's all folks. Going to settle down in my comfy chair and watch the F1 Bahrain Grand Prix... and have some me time!Catch you next week, David :)

Week Ending 15th April... What a week!

What a week... most of it spent busy preparing for the Bradley Baker Literacy Competition, which will take place in Torbay during the month of June. Deadline for entries is 27th April so another reminder to all the KS1 & KS2 literacy coordinators in the bay to let me know if you want to take part in this fantastic project.

Received confirmation of my invitation from Waterstones to attend and present at the Wychwood Literature Festival, which is being held at Cheltenham Race Course in June (Wowzers... June is going to be a very busy month)... I'll be presenting my Bradley Baker books inside the Waterstones Marquee on Sat 9th and Sun 10th. Be great to see you there and your support would be most welcome.

Yesterday (14th) I attended Waterstones in the Cribbs Causeway Shopping Mall just off the M5 near Bristol. Another fab book signing event and special thanks to Simon for arranging the event and to Georgie for looking after me on the day. It's always a pleasure to visit the booksellers at Cribbs and Saturday was my third signing event there. Looking forward to the fourth as we get nearer to Christmas. It will also be a great opportunity to introduce the Bradley Baker fans to the third installment of the series... The Pyramids of Blood.

Speaking of which... I also managed to squeeze in some writing ths week. Another 2000 words penned and that takes me upto 18,000 words (only another 82,0000 to go - no pressure).

That's it for this week... more updates on the Torbay Literacy Competition next week and hopefully some good progress on the new book. Till then see ya!
