Spiritual Gifts, 36

 ~ The Spiritual Gift of Speaking in Tongues ~

Opening Comment  ~  “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.  Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).

Category  ~  The sign gift of speaking in an unlearned language.

Purpose  ~  There is significant division within Christianity regarding tongues and specifically the role of tongues in the Church today.

The purpose of tongues is an extremely important in discussing the subject of Biblical tongues.  A careful examination of the New Testament passages dealing with tongues clearly reveals that tongues were a sign not for believers but for unbelievers.  In fact there is one undeniable statement to this effect: “Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe” (1 Corinthians 14:22).

Scripture  ~  “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.  There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.  And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.  But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues[unlearned languages], to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills” (1 Corinthians 12:4-11).

This passage clearly denotes that those who were given the grace gift of speaking in an unknown language were not spiritually superior to those with other gifts.

“And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.  Are all apostles?  Are all prophets?  Are all teachers?  Are all workers of miracles?  Do all have gifts of healings?  Do all speak with tongues?  Do all interpret?  But earnestly desire the best gifts.  And yet I show you a more excellent way” (1 Corinthians 12:28-31).

This chapter ends with the “more excellent way” explained: “and now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13).

Additional Notes  ~  (1)  Are these “unknown languages” or new languages which did not exist?  No!  They were existing languages which the person speaking in tongues had not learned but was inspired to speak in for the benefit of the hearers.  A somewhat analogous situation in our day is the translation of Scripture into languages which do not have the Word of God in their own language.

(2)  During this period, as now, there were carnal Christians, living on a very low spiritual level who are fascinated by anything out of the ordinary.  So it was not surprising that the tongues movement became a topic of extreme interest.  This is what is being discussed.  In Corinthians Paul was correcting many of the wrong things in the Corinthian church.  In 1 Corinthians 12-14 Paul is emphasizing to them that there are many different spiritual gifts and it is the Holy Spirit who distributes to believers.  Paul was trying to decrease their preoccupation with the gift of tongues!

(3)  It is interesting to note: (a) Jesus never spoke in tongues.  (b) There is no record of the apostles speaking in tongues after Pentecost.  (c) We do not have a historical record of Paul speaking in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:18).  (d) We have no Biblical record of any sermon delivered in a tongue.

"Tongues seem to have ceased first of all the gifts." —Dr. A.T. Robertson

Closing Comments  ~  “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.  Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.  Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.  Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.  Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine.  Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:12-16).

“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:6-7).

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).

Question – Jesus, 111

 ~ Regarding Rest ~

Introduction ~  This series is about questions involving Jesus.  Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth.  Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others.  We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts).  Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.

Scripture  ~  “Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, ‘Sit here while I go and pray over there.’  And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.  Then He said to them, ‘My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.  Stay here and watch with Me.’

“He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, ‘O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.’  Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, ‘What!  Could you not watch with Me one hour?  Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation.  The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.’

“Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, ‘O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.’  And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.

“So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.  Then He came to His disciples and said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.  Rise, let us be going.  See, My betrayer is at hand’” (Matthew 26:36-46).

Comment  ~  Rest is part of the divine commands to humans.  But are you resting at the appropriate times?

God Is My… (Psalms), 78

 ~ God Is My Fortress, 5 ~

Introduction  ~  Previously from July 16, 2017 through January 6, 2019 ALN posted a series of 60 posts of “Jesus is…,” and now we look exclusively at who “God is…” from the Book of Psalms.  While not a complete list these posts occur are in the same order they are in the Psalms.

Passage  ~  “Blessed be the Lord my Rock, Who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle —  my lovingkindness and my fortress, my high tower and my deliverer, my shield and the One in whom I take refuge, Who subdues my people under me” (Psalm 144:1-2).

Other Passages  ~  “I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortressand my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies” (Psalm 18:1-3).

“In You, O Lord, I put my trust; let me never be ashamed; deliver me in Your righteousness. Bow down Your ear to me, deliver me speedily; be my rock of refuge, a fortress of defense to save me” (Psalm 31:1-2).

“For You aremy rock and my fortress; therefore, for Your name’s sake, ;ead me and guide me. Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, for You are my strength. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth” (Psalm 31:3-5).

“In You, O Lord, I put my trust; let me never be put to shame. Deliver me in Your righteousness, and cause me to escape; incline Your ear to me, and save me. Be my strong refuge, to which I may resort continually; You have given the commandment to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress” (Psalm 71:1-3).

Myth, 117

 ~ The Bible Is Too Old To Be Relevant Today ~

Myth  ~  The Bible is such an old book it is no longer relevant for our modern society.      Reality  ~  God is eternal and His Word is eternal.     Scripture  ~  “All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass.  The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the Word of the Lord endures forever” (1 Peter 1:24-25).     “Jesus Christ [the Living Word] is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).     “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).   Comment  ~  The day you were born you were terminal!

7 Life Essentials, 1

 ~ Basic Need: Water ~

Introduction  ~  In this series we will look at the four most basic physical needs for a human to survive, and how Jesus Christ satisfies the parallel spiritual needs.  Then we will look at three additional critical factors related to both our physical and spiritual needs.

Physical Needs  ~  According to basic physiological understanding mankind needs four basic elements in order to survive physically: water, air, food, and light.

Jesus satisfies the parallel spiritual needs.  Jesus is the Living Water (John 4:10-11, 7:38).  Jesus provides the Breath of Life (Genesis 2:7, Colossians 1:16-17).  Jesus is the Bread of Life (John 6:35, 48).  Jesus is the Light of the World (John 8:12, 9:5).

Key Scriptures  ~  “Jesus answered and said to her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, “Give Me a drink,” you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.’  The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep.  Where then do You get that living water?  Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?’  Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.  But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.’  The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw’” (John 4:10-15).

“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.  He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’” (John 7:37-38).

Comment  ~  The human body is 60 percent.  The brain and heart are both nearly 75 percent water.

Bible Answer, 89

 ~ Did You Get It Right? ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~ bible answer ~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
question:  How many times are cucumbers mentioned in the Bible?
answer:  Twice (Numbers 11:5; Isaiah 1:8)
“Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: ‘Who will give us meat to eat?  We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; but now our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!’” (Numbers 11:4-6).
“Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire; strangers devour your land in your presence; and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.  So the daughter of Zion is left as a booth in a vineyard, as a hut in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.  Unless the Lord of hosts had left to us a very small remnant, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been made like Gomorrah” (Isaiah 1:7-9).
3 People Classes
 ~ Are You Consistently Following This Important Teaching? ~
Instructive Scripture  ~  “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.  Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being.  Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience' sake; for ‘the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.’  If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience’ sake.  But if anyone says to you, ‘This was offered to idols,’ do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake; for "the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.’  ‘Conscience,’ I say, not your own, but that of the other.  For why is my liberty judged by another man’s conscience?  But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken of for the food over which I give thanks?  Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.  Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved” (1 Corinthians 10:23-33).
Inherent Concept  ~  This passage of Scripture’s primary thought is that the mature Christian will do everything for the glory of God (10:31).  But remember, “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1).
Interesting Note  ~  This passage lists three distinct classes of people: Jews, Greeks, and Christians (10:32).
Important Teaching  ~  The mature believer will never knowingly act in such a way to offend another believer—even though such an action would be perfectly acceptable in their own “freedom in Christ.”
Question – Jesus, 110
 ~ Regarding Response ~
Introduction ~  This series is about questions involving Jesus.  Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth.  Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others.  We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts).  Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.
Scripture  ~  Jesus is speaking, “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.  If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?  Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:9-13).
Comment  ~  Have you sincerely repented of your sins and asked God for forgiveness and the salvation that is only available through His Son?
Celebrate The Harvest
 ~ Turn Halloween To Praise ~
Avoid  ~  Practices which the Scriptures clearly warns against.  Do not glorify that which God has told His people to have nothing to do with.
Ghosts  ~  “Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary.  I am the Lord.  Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them.  I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 19:30-31).
Wizards  ~  “When you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations.  There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.  For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you.  You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.  For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the Lord your God has not appointed such for you” (Deuteronomy 18:9-14).
Witches  ~  Consider God’s statement to His chosen people Israel: “You shall not permit a sorceress to live” (Exodus 22:18).
Vampires  ~  “Moreover you shall not eat any blood in any of your dwellings, whether of bird or beast.  Whoever eats any blood, that person shall be cut off from his people” (Leviticus 7:26-27).
Quote  ~  “I’m glad that Christian parents let their children worship the Devil at least one night out of the year.” —Anton LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan.
Do Celebrate  ~  The blessings of God to you, your family, your local church, your community, and your nation.
“Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.  Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).
Fall is a good time to reflect on the cornucopia of blessings which we have received throughout the year!
