Spiritual Gifts, 23
~ The Spiritual Gift of Teaching ~
Opening Comment ~ “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).
Category ~ In my thinking the gift of teaching is in the Medical Community of gifts and specifically the Spiritual Pediatrician – one who grows an infant (intellectually) into a mature person. Sub-categories of this gift are the gift of the Word of Wisdom and the gift of the Word of Knowledge. We will look at these two gifts in our next two posts.
Definition ~ The teacher’s task is to set forth the fundamental truths of the Bible for the building up and edification of the saints.
Loren Fischer has defined the gift of teaching as, “The God-given ability to lay down in a systematic order the complete ladder of a doctrine and to apply it incisively and diligently to life.”
John Phillips puts it this way: “The teacher is the man who studies the Bible diligently, comparing Scripture with Scripture, using sound methods of exegesis, hermeneutics, homiletics, analysis, and synthesis, and who edifies others with the fruits of his efforts.” He then provides simple explanations:
Exegesis = interpretation (or the practice of hermeneutics)
Hermeneutics = principles of interpretation
Homiletics = the art of writing and preaching sermons
Analysis = the separation of the whole into its parts or elements
Synthesis = the assembling of separate or subordinate parts into a whole
Scripture ~ “And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers” (1 Corinthians 12:28a).
“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching” (Romans 12:6-8a).
“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-12).
Comments ~ J. Vernon McGee described teachers in his typical simple straightforward way: “The men who were to instruct the flock.” The teachers address the conscience and the heart through exhortation based on Scripture.
John Phillips provides this helpful breakdown: Teaching involves the interpretation of truth. Prophecy comes from inspirationof truth. Ministry is the incarnationof truth. Exhortation is given with the intentionof truth.
Biblical Examples ~ There are many. In the New Testament the premier example would be the Apostle Paul.
Traits ~ The Biblical teacher: 1) Studies a Biblical passage (or topic) systematically considering it in light of its broader context. 2} Picks out the main points in a presentation, summarize and evaluate easily and quickly. 3) Finds it as easy to talk to a group as to counsel with one person. 4) Sets a high standard in each endeavor, (and becomes irritated when people teach without adequate preparation). 5)Sets a pattern of behavior which is respected and followed by others. 6) Decides carefully what to do in order to set an example for others to follow. 7) Enjoys engaging in organized discussions when participants have thoroughly studied the subject. 8) Engages in careful study so as not to overlook details.
Closing Comments ~ “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:12-16).
“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:6-7).
“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).

Question – Jesus, 95
~ Regarding Priority, 1of2 ~
Introduction ~ This series is about questions involving Jesus. Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth. Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others. We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts). Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.
Scripture ~ “Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: ‘The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, “What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?” So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry’.” But God said to him, “Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?” So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God’” (Luke 12:16-21).
Comment ~ There’s an old saying, “There are no U-Hauls in heaven.” Do you have your priorities straight? Martyred missionary Jim Elliot is often quoted. The most frequent quote from Jim Elliot is “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
Resource ~ Two books which are full of Jim’s actual writings are “The Journals of Jim Elliot” and “JIM ELLIOT: Recorded Messages” (https://books2read.com/JimElliot).

God Is My… (Psalms), 63
~ God Is My Rock, 7 ~
Introduction ~ Previously from July 16, 2017 through January 6, 2019 ALN posted a series of 60 posts of “Jesus is…,” and now we look exclusively at who “God is…” from the Book of Psalms. While not a complete list these posts occur are in the same order they are in the Psalms.
Passage ~ “Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms” (Psalm 95:1-2).
Prior Passages ~ “Be my strong refuge, to which I may resort continually; You have given the commandment to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress”(Psalm 71:3).
“My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God” (Psalm 62:5-7).
“I will say to God my Rock, ‘Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?’ As with a breaking of my bones, my enemies reproach me, while they say to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’” (Psalm 42:9-10).
“I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;so shall I be saved from my enemies” (Psalm 18:1-3).
“In You, O Lord, I put my trust; let me never be ashamed; deliver me in Your righteousness. Bow down Your ear to me, deliver me speedily; be my rock of refuge, a fortress of defense to save me.” (Psalm 31:1-2).
“For You are my rock and my fortress; therefore, for Your name’s sake, lead me and guide me. Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, for You are my strength. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth” (Psalm 31:3-5).
Significance ~ A rock implies permanence and stability. In the Gospels we hear Christ teaching about the significance of a solid foundation. “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall” (Matthew 7:24-27).

Myth, 101
~ Intelligent People Don’t Read The Bible ~
Myth ~ This is a snobbish position held by some who are not open-minded. Like many urban legends this does have an element of truth which the Bible recognizes. Scripture ~ “For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God — and righteousness and sanctification and redemption — that, as it is written, ‘He who glories, let him glory in the Lord’” (1 Corinthians 1:26-31). Comment ~ One of the Queens of England held this Scripture as her favorite. She remarked that she was so thankful for the “m” in the passage. The fact that it read “not Many noble” as opposed to “not any noble.” Truth ~ Many of the most intelligent people have and do read, study, and believe the Bible. Examples ~ “The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will [may] make you an atheist, but at that bottom of the glass, God is waiting for you.” –Werner Heisenberg (father of Quantum Physics)“If you study science deep enough and long enough, it will force you to believe in God.” –Lord William Kelvin
“The more we get to know about our universe, the more the hypothesis about a Creator gains in credibility as the best explanation of why we are here.” –Dr. John Lennox, Professor of Mathematics, Oxford University.
“This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being.” –Isaac Newton (The Principia: Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosop)
“Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain Who set the planets in motion. God governs all things and knows all that is or can be done.” –Isaac Newton

Quiet, 2of4
~ A Time To Not Be Quiet: Jesus Our Example ~
Principle ~ “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven … A time to keep silence, and a time to speak” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 7b).
A Time To Preach(the truth of God) ~ “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God’” (John 3:10-21).
A Time To Speak Up (call upon God) ~ “Jesus went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. And He said, ‘Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will’” (Mark 14:35-36).
A Time To Witness (what you know firsthand) ~ Jesus said, “Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world” (John 6:46-51).
“Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, ‘You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me’” (John 7:28-29).
A Time To Defend (the truth) ~ “So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, ‘He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.’ And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst” (John 8:7-9).
Jesus said, “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation” (Matthew 23:13-14, continue reading the rest of this chapter).
“Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them, ‘It is written, “My house shall be called a house of prayer,” but you have made it a “den of thieves”’” (Matthew 21:12-13, also see Mark 11:15-17 and Luke 19:45-46).

The Trinity in Matthew 23
~ The Trinity Role’s In Our Lives ~
Introduction ~ While the English word “Trinity” is not found in the Bible the concept and truth of the Trinity is found throughout Scripture – beginning in the first chapter in the historical account of creation. In this post we find the Trinity in the Gospel of Matthew chapter 23.
The Passage ~ “Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, saying: ‘The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them. They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger. But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments. They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men. But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ. But the greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted’” (Matthew 23:1-12 nasu)
The Holy Spirit ~ Jesus said, “They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi [Bible Teacher] by men. But do not be called Rabbi [Bible Teacher]; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers” (Matthew 23:6-8 nasu)
While on earth Christ was our Teacher. After He ascended back to heaven the Holy Spirit is our Teacher. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (John 14:25-26). Jesus also said, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you” (John 16:12-14). “But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him” (1 John 2:27).
God the Father ~ Jesus said, “Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven” (Matthew 23: nasu)
The Son of God ~ Jesus said, “Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader [Master], that is, Christ. But the greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted’” (Matthew 23:10-12 nasu)

God Our Rock, 17
~ My Rock Is High ~
Introduction ~ In Matthew 7:24-27 and Luke 6:47-49 Jesus relates the importance of building your house upon rock rather than sand. This principle is even more critical when it comes to our spiritual life. Each post in this series looks at a different Biblical passage which refers to our God as a Rock (not a complete list).
Scripture ~ “Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
“For You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah
“For You, O God, have heard my vows; You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name. You will prolong the king’s life, His years as many generations. He shall abide before God forever. Oh, prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him!
“So I will sing praise to Your name forever, that I may daily perform my vows” (Psalm 61:1-8).

Spiritual Gifts, 22
~ The Spiritual Gift of The Evangelist ~
Opening Comment ~ “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).
Category ~ In my thinking the gift of evangelism is in the Medical Community of gifts and specifically the Spiritual Obstetrician – one who delivers spiritual babies!
Scripture ~ “And He Himself gave some to beapostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head — Christ — from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love” (Ephesians 4:11-16).
Comments ~ 1) God gifted “some” to be evangelists (see above passage). I believe that many well-meaning teachers in the modern church lay guilt trips on individual Christians teaching that all Christians should be evangelizing the world. I do not find that in Scripture. I do find that we all are to teach and make disciples as we go about living in the world (Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:19-20).
There are only three references to evangelists/evangelism in the New Testament and in each time it relates either to the special gift or an individual who had the gift of evangelism. In the New Testament evangelists were traveling missionaries.
I do find over and over that all Christians are to be witnesses! We should be quick to relate to others our own spiritual experiences. (That is a topic for a different post.)
Biblical Examples ~ “And when we had finished our voyage from Tyre, we came to Ptolemais, greeted the brethren, and stayed with them one day. On the next day we who were Paul’s companions departed and came to Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him” (Acts 21:7-8). Notice the reference to Philip is similar to us saying, “Billy Graham, the evangelist.”
In the New Testament we see clearly that Paul was an evangelist as were some others.

Question – Jesus, 94
~ Regarding Power ~
Introduction ~ This series is about questions involving Jesus. Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth. Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others. We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts). Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.
Scripture ~ “And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, ‘The Teacher has come and is calling for you.’ As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him. Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was in the place where Martha met Him. Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, ‘She is going to the tomb to weep there.’
“Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, ‘Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.’
“Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. And He said, ‘Where have you laid him?’
“They said to Him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, ‘See how He loved him!’ And some of them said, ‘Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying’?” (John 11:28-37).

God Is My… (Psalms), 62
~ God Is My Shepherd, 2 ~
Introduction ~ Previously from July 16, 2017 through January 6, 2019 ALN posted a series of 60 posts of “Jesus is…,” and now we look exclusively at who “God is…” from the Book of Psalms. While not a complete list these posts occur in the same order they are in the Psalms.
Passage ~ “Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who dwell between the cherubim, shine forth! Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, stir up Your strength, and come and save us” (Psalm 80:1-2).
Prior Passage ~ “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake” (Psalm 23:1-3).
