7 At Jesus’ Feet
~ Literally and Figuratively at His Feet ~
The Scripture provides at least seven reasons for gathering at the feet of Jesus.
For Forgiveness~ “And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil” (Luke 7:37-38).
For Healing~ “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people” (Matthew 4:23). “And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. For she said to herself, ‘If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.’ But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, ‘Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.’ And the woman was made well from that hour” (Matthew 9:20-22). “But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing” (Luke 9:11).
For Instruction~ “Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word” (Luke 10:38-39).
In Distress~ “Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, ‘She is going to the tomb to weep there.’ Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, ‘Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died’” (John 11:31-32).
In Prayer~ “So it was, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him. And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus' feet and begged Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying” (Luke 8:40-42).
In Fear~ “And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, ‘Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death” (Revelation 1:17-18).
In Worship~ “Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. And they lifted up their voices and said, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!’ So when He saw them, He said to them, ‘Go, show yourselves to the priests.’ And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan” (Luke 17:11-16).
Closing Questions ~ Have you been at Jesus’ feet recently? Should you be at His feet more frequently?

7 At All Times
~ A Christian’s Checklist of Continuous Responsibilities ~
Praise At All Times ~ “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the Lord; the humble shall hear of it and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lordwith me, and let us exalt His name together” (Psalm 34:1-3).
Trust At All Times ~ “My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us” (Psalm 62:5-8).
Righteousness At All Times ~ “Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? Who can declare all His praise? Blessed are those who keep justice, and he who does righteousness at all times!” (Psalm106:2-3).
Longing At All Times ~ “Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your Word. Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law. I am a stranger in the earth; do not hide Your commandments from me. My soul breaks with longing for Your judgments at all times. You rebuke the proud—the cursed, who stray from Your commandments. Remove from me reproach and contempt, for I have kept Your testimonies. Princes also sit and speak against me, but Your servant meditates on Your statutes. Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors” (Psalm 119:17-24).
Friendship At All Times ~ “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” (Proverbs 17:17).
Zeal At All Times ~ “It is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you” (Galatians 4:18).
Peace At All Times ~ “May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all” (2 Thessalonians 3:16).

7 Always
~ The Christian Should Always… ~
Consider seven things the Christian should always be.
Be Focused ~ “I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved” (Psalm 16:8). God is to be our constant focus.
Be Living Right ~ “Let your garments always be white, and let your head lack no oil” (Ecclesiastes 9:8). The garments of the life are to be kept white by righteousness. God the Father sees us covered with the garments of Christ’s Righteousness. Oil in Scripture is often symbolic of the Holy Spirit. If we live sensitive to the Spirit we will live a pleasing life to God.
Be Obedient ~ “Therefore you shall love the Lord your God, and keep His charge, His statutes, His judgments, and His commandments always” (Deuteronomy 11:1). The commandments of the Lord are to be obeyed.
Be Holy ~ “You shall also make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, like the engraving of a signet: HOLINESS TO THE LORD. And you shall put it on a blue cord, that it may be on the turban; it shall be on the front of the turban. So it shall be on Aaron’s forehead, that Aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things which the children of Israel hallow in all their holy gifts; and it shall always be on his forehead, that they may be accepted before the Lord” (Exodus 28:36-38). Holiness is to be the key feature in the character of a Christian.
Be Prayful ~ “Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:17-18). Prayer is the oil that helps the believer run smoothly through the friction points of life.
Be Joyful ~ “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). Joy is the outcome of the recognition of the Lordship of Christ.
Be A Witness ~ “And you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually” (Exodus 27:20). The light of your witness and testimony will burn brightly if fed by the oil of the Spirit. “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15).

7 Activities
~ 7 Christian Direct Involvements With Their Savior ~
Walking With Him(companionship) ~ “Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them” (Luke 24:13-15).
Talking To Him(fellowship) ~ “Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem” (Luke 9:28-31).
Listening To Him(instruction) ~ “Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word” (Luke 10:38-39).
Abiding With Him(joy and peace) ~ “Jesus said to them, ‘Come and see.’ They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour)” (John 1:39).
Living With Him(oneness) ~ “Jesus said to them, ‘Come and see.’ They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour)” (John 1:39).
Waiting On Him(power) ~ “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:31).
Watching For Him(expectancy) ~ “So it was, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him” (Luke 8:40).
additional note ~ For us today our Lord’s command is clear, “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42).

7 Actions
~ Jesus Christ in Action ~
Introduction ~ Looking back at the history of “Abundant Life Now” posts, we discovered that there have been 60 posts entitled “7 [topic]” through June 2021. Surprisingly, that equals two months’ worth of daily posts since the beginning of ALN on October 21, 2009. During each day of this seventh month of 2021, each ALN post is a “7 [topic].”
The Scene ~ “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, are You washing my feet?’”
Key Concept ~ In just three verses we see Jesus Christ taking seven actions as the ultimate servant-leader in action!
The Actions ~ “Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose (1) from supper and laid (2) aside His garments, took (3) a towel and girded (4) Himself. After that, He poured (5) water into a basin and began to wash (6) the disciples’ feet, and to wipe (7) them with the towel with which He was girded” (John 13:3-5).
Emotional Impact ~ In looking at this passage it is easy to overlook the fact that the “Beloved Disciple” is writing about a personal experience which occurred some 60 years earlier! The fact that he remembers such details makes it clear that the Savior serving His followers left an indelible memory. John’s personal time with Jesus had long-lasting impact.
Concluding Thought ~ How much lasting impact does your time alone with Jesus (in the Word of God and in prayer) have on you and the actions of your life? How do you measure up as a servant following in your Master’s footsteps?

God Our Rock, 20
~ God Is My Rock, 3 ~
Introduction ~ In Matthew 7:24-27 and Luke 6:47-49 Jesus relates the importance of building your house upon rock rather than sand. This principle is even more critical when it comes to our spiritual life. Each post in this series looks at a different Biblical passage which refers to our God as a Rock (not a complete list).
Scripture ~ “In You, O Lord, I put my trust; let me never be put to shame. Deliver me in Your righteousness, and cause me to escape; incline Your ear to me, and save me. Be my strong refuge, to which I may resort continually; You have given the commandment to save me,for You are my rockand my fortress.
“Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. For You are my hope, O Lord God; You are my trust from my youth. By You I have been upheld from birth; You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb. My praise shall be continually of You.
“I have become as a wonder to many, but You are my strong refuge. Let my mouth be filled with Your praise and with Your glory all the day” (Psalm 71:1-8).

Spiritual Gifts, 25
~ The Spiritual Gift of Teaching – Word of Knowledge ~
Opening Comment ~ “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).
Category ~ Sub-categories of the gift of Teaching are the gift of Words of Wisdom and the gift of Words of Knowledge.
Definition ~ “Knowledge” implies having investigated, or to dig into, truth. J. Vernon McGee once remarked, “Many people simply do not have the time to dig into the Word of God, to dig out the nuggets.” Loren Fischer describes the gift of the Word of Knowledge as, “The God-given ability to arrange the facts of Scripture, to categorize these into principles and to communicate them to repeated or familiar situations.”
Scripture ~ “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:4-8).
“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).
Comment ~ Although the Holy Spirit is sovereign in bestowing gifts, we have the right to ask God for the gift we want. He says we are to “covet earnestly the best gifts” (1 Corinthians 12:31).
Quote ~ J. Vernon McGee was well-known as a simple straightforward teacher who had down-home folksy manner. Here is a small part of his testimony: “Not having been brought up in a Christian home, I had no Christian training at all. When I went away to seminary, I didn’t even know the books of the Bible. I had graduated from a college where the emphasis was placed on the intellectual and the philosophical, and I was trying to be that kind of preacher. Then I heard Dr. Harry Ironside speak. He explained Scripture in a simple manner. And I heard him make the statement, ‘Put the cookies on the bottom shelf so the kiddies can get them.’ And I remembered that my Lord had said, ‘Feed my sheep’ (see John 21:16). He hadn’t said, "’Feed my giraffes.’ So I went to God and prayed, ‘Lord, I want to be that kind of preacher.’
“Later, I substituted for Dr. Ironside at Dallas Theological Seminary, and when he passed on, the seminary's president, Dr. Lewis Sperry Chaefer, called me on the phone. He asked, ‘Would you take Dr. Ironside’s lectures here at the seminary?"’ I could hardly answer him clearly, and I almost rudely hung up the phone. I dropped to my knees, and I confess that I wept as I thanked God. I said, ‘Lord I prayed that You would let me teach like Dr. Ironside, and You have answered my prayer!" [I coveted earnestly the best gift, and He answered my prayer.] Although I am no Dr. Ironside, how I thrill today at the experience and the privilege of teaching the Word of God!”
Traits ~ Here are some examples often typified by one with the gift of the Word of Knowledge. 1) Often studies questions thoroughly so as to provide information on the topic others have not considered. 2) Has the required persistence to stay with a project once it is started until it is completed in all its details. 3) Searches for new information which sheds additional light before concluding a study. 4) Analyzes data with precision (sometimes fails to see the practical benefits). 5) Employs a logical, scientific method when approaching a problem.
Closing Comments ~ “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:12-16).
“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:6-7).
“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).

Question – Jesus, 97
~ Regarding Process~
Introduction ~ This series is about questions involving Jesus. Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth. Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others. We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts). Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.
Scripture ~ “There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, ‘Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.’
“Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’
“Nicodemus said to Him, ‘How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?’
“Jesus answered, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, “You must be born again.” The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit’” (John 3:1-9).
Comment ~ In the book “JIM ELLIOT: Recorded Messages” (https://books2read.com/JimElliot) martyred missionary Jim Elliot explains the Biblical concept of being born again in a sub-section entitled “What Does ‘Born Again’ Mean?” This sub-section is contained in “Chapter 7 – Peter.”

God Is My… (Psalms), 64
~ God Is My Salvation ~
Introduction ~ Previously from July 16, 2017 through January 6, 2019 ALN posted a series of 60 posts of “Jesus is…,” and now we look exclusively at who “God is…” from the Book of Psalms. While not a complete list these posts occur are in the same order they are in the Psalms.
Passage ~ “Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.
“For the Lord is the great God, and the great King above all gods. In His hand are the deep places of the earth; the heights of the hills are His also. The sea is His, for He made it; and His hands formed the dry land.
“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand” (Psalm 95:1-7).

Myth, 103
~ Seminary Is Not About Real Life Issues ~
Myth ~ Seminary study is all theoretical and does not effectively deal with the every day issues of living in our era. Truth ~ Seminary students study truth. Truth is the only thing which can guide an individual to living their life good and pleasing in the sight of an all-knowing God. Scripture ~ The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, “Prescribe and teach these things. Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching. Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery. Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:11-16 nasu).“Whoever loves his life loses it and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (John 12:25).
Quotes ~ “Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.” –Goethe (1749-1832)
“I'd rather lose in a cause that will ultimately succeed, than succeed in one that will ultimately fail.” –Abraham Lincoln )1809-1865)
