Remembering 9/11

Today is the 9th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in New York City, and the Pentagon in Washington, DC.  An array of emotions run through me... sadness, anger, resolve - it's hard to put it all into words.

There will be newscasts and interviews.  There will be memorial services and private vigils. We will grieve with mothers, fathers, sons and daughters.  We will ache for husbands, wives, aunts and uncles. Grandparents and grandchildren alike wi...

Lord of the Harvest

In agriculture, the harvest is the process of gathering mature crops from the fields. Reaping is the cutting of grain for harvest , typically using a scythe, sickle, or reaper. The harvest marks the end of the growing season, or the growing cycle for a particular crop.

Genesis 8:22 ends with a promise by God that He will never destroy every living thing again; "While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and winter and summer, and day and night, shall not cease."
The end o...

Labor Day & the Kingdom Work Ethic

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. It then became an official American holiday in 1894. Labor Day celebrations were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families.  America's vital labor-force added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest...

Supernatural Friendship

Webster's defines a friend as, "one attached to another by affection or esteem." There is a particular passage of scripture that is a wonderful example of Godly friendship, and that is in I Samuel chapters 18-23.

David had already been anointed as the future king of Israel, but he would not ascend to his throne for approximately twenty-two more years. During that time he defeated the Philistine warrior Goliath, served in King Saul's court as his armorbearer, and played the harp to calm the...

It's a Birthday Bash, and You're Invited !

Our family recently celebrated two birthdays:  my mother turned seventy-five (a milestone), and my sister's birthday is the same day!  This year was indeed a special one!  There's nothing I like better than baking their favorite cake, picking out just the right card, and of course, finding the perfect gift to give!   One of my favorite verses to quote for a birthday is Psalm 118:24, "This is the day which the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it."  I like to imagine Father God...

Mom, you DO have the greatest influence on your children...

Statistically, women who attend church alone with their children are on the rise. Women's Sunday school classes are flourishing. Why is this trend so prevalent across the spectrum of Christian denominations? Theories range from the lack of strong, spiritual leadership by the husband in the home, to absentee fathers, to women being more open to the spiritual things of God. No matter the reasons, women make up a larger percentage of regular attendance in most churches – oftentimes alone, with t...

Here comes the Bride…

Everybody loves a wedding! Wedding customs in the Bible centered on the two events of the betrothal and the wedding. On the day of the wedding, the bride dressed in white, elaborately embroidered robes, bedecked herself with jewels, and put on a veil. The bridegroom, attended by friends and accompanied by musicians and singers, went to the bride's house. After receiving her from her parents, and with their blessing, he conducted the whole wedding party back to his own house. On the way other ...

I AM The Good Shepherd

In Scripture, Jesus is portrayed as our Shepherd:

John 10:11... I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd gives His life for the sheep.  (Provider – Caretaker)

I Peter 5:4 …and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.
(Protector – Sustainer – Guide)

Hebrews 13:30 …that Great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant. (Trustworthy – Protector)

Jesus tells us in Luke15:4-6 the parable of the lost sheep: "What man of...
