Retirement - Days of Joy or Woe is Me?

Proverbs 20:29 says, "…the splendor of old men is their gray head."
He had talked about when to retire for a couple of years. He had worked over 35 years in with the US Government and about 25 years with the US Naval Reserves. Now he was officially ready to put on the "I'm Retired and Loving It" hat. Yes – he had worked long and hard and now he was ready to reap the rewards of retirement.
But I was secretly dreading what was coming. Why?
I admit it. I liked having my private devotional time to meet with the Lord. I liked having my coffee and watching the morning news uninterrupted before jumping into the rest of my day. I was accustomed to the quiet and peacefulness in our home while everyone else was gone. Okay – I was selfish!
This is a lighthearted look at what we have encountered in the last two years since he retired:
A Man's Castle Every king needs a place of rest, solitude and retreat from the world's demands. Being retired has given my husband more time in his castle. That has caused me to re-inspect the castle's overall appearance and appeal. First, I wanted to deal with that dungeon of "same old, same old". We were entering a new phase of our life as empty-nesters, and we needed to connect again on a personal level. Next, I needed to make sure the rooms were light and airy – not stuffy and dark. That makes for better energy levels and a happy countenance. The moat surrounding our castle needed to keep away unwanted visitors, predators and opposing forces. Finally, the castle required regular maintenance to stay in tip-top shape. God spoke to my heart about the need to prioritize, and prefer my husband.
Ecclesiastes 12:6 says, "Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the well. Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it."

Psalm 92:13-14 declares, "Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing."
Home Improvements – Here We Come! All I heard about during his last year of work was, "We're going to clean out that garage so we can get both cars inside when I'm retired!" There is a lengthy "honey do list" of little projects that got pushed back while he was still working full-time. I have always enjoyed helping out in the yard, so the thought of jumping onto the John Deere was fun for me. I've helped lay down sod, cleaned out the gutters, helped string up Christmas lights, pruned and fertilized shrubs and trees, helped change the oil in our cars, etc. When I readily offer to help – that's one of those "love languages" that men enjoy hearing.
Colossians 3:23 states, "And whatever you do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord and no to men…"
Let's Go on a "Man Date" This is probably one of the most important areas we struggle with when our husbands retire. We have to be spiritually and emotionally sensitive to their needs – and that includes "going and doing". They often want us to accompany them on that quick trip to Home Depot or Lowes, stroll around Wal-Mart, or just take a drive to Costco to see what's new. Mine likes to "window shop" at Best Buy or take a ride to the Outlet Mall. They want to spend time with us - just being with us, and doing nothing in particular. I've learned that if I say "no" and not show any interest, he gets his feelings hurt. God has given me spiritual discernment in order to listen and respond in a God honoring way to his requests. I have learned to show interest and a willingness to go with him – all in hopes of cementing our relationship for years to come. I might not really want to go – but I recognize it's his way of showing me he wants to spend time with me.
Philippians 2:3-4 says, "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others."

Job 12:12 declares, "Wisdom is with aged men, and with length of days, understanding."
Grandpa and Nail Polish When our granddaughter was born two years ago, we were elated. We were at the hospital on that memorable day and my husband was so proud. That little girl would turn his world upside down! Our son and family live several hours away in another state, but when we get together – she is a beacon of joy to us all. One day I found a cute used Little Tikes vanity table and bench with all the accessories at my neighbor's garage sale. Our granddaughter just loved it. One of the things she likes to do (since her mommy paints hers) is to come and pretend to paint our nails. Grandpa has been a willing participant for awhile now. He patiently lets her "paint" his finger nails and toe nails with her little plastic bottle of nail polish, and then she gently "blows" on them. It's so funny to watch. It is all my husband can do to keep from laughing out loud. She takes her task so seriously!
Proverbs 17:6 states, "Children's children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their father."
God was showing me that it wasn't about my agenda, but about His. I desperately needed an attitude adjustment. My priorities needed to change and my schedule needed to be more flexible. I've heard a saying that sums it up rather well: "People take precedence over plans." I try to put that into practice now that we're together day after day. Do I do everything right all the time? Nope – but I ask God to make me more sensitive to his needs and how we can "mesh" our lives together in order to glorify Him.
As a helpmeet, I need to do what I can to bolster his confidence, honor his hard work and devotion, and praise his commitment to "us". I bring glory to God when I willingly turn my life over to Him to direct as He pleases. My spiritual ears need to be unstopped, my spiritual eyes need be opened, and my heart needs to be tendered as we continue to journey through the golden years of retirement.
"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10)

It's All in God's Timing – Isn't It?

"I just know this is going to open his eyes!"
"Now he'll finally surrender!"
Do you spend your time, energy and "wishful thinking" on trying to figure out when your spouse might accept the Lord Jesus as his Savior? Have you made plans, signed him up for a men's retreat, coerced him into attending a visiting pastor's service, had others call him, or just downright tried to play "Holy Spirit" and shame him into it? You'd better reconsider your ways and let God do what He does best – be Sovereign in all His ways.
Timing is everything. Let's venture back to the time of Ruth and Naomi who saw firsthand what God's timing is all about.
The story of Ruth in the Old Testament takes place during the time of the Judges when Israel was disobedient and idolatrous. It was a time of apostasy, moral decay and anarchy. Moab was a nation of people descended from Moab – the grandson of Lot by incest with his eldest daughter. The Moabites played a significant part in seducing the Israelites from their true God to idols and pagan worship. During the famine that occurred in Judah, Elimelech of Bethlehem took his wife and two sons to Moab where there was free travel between the two nations and fertile land to settle.
Elimelech's two sons married local Moabite women, but soon afterward Elimelech died, leaving Naomi a widow. Ten years later both sons died – leaving Ruth and her sister-in-law widows also. Naomi planned to return to Judah – the land of her husband's inheritance. She would once again be among her people during this time of great personal loss. She encouraged her two daughters-in-law to return to their fathers' homes.
Ruth strongly urged Naomi to let her return with her instead of staying in Moab. She recognized Naomi's God as the true God of Israel and wanted to reside with her permanently saying, "…your people shall be my people, and your God my God" (Ruth 1:16). Ruth recognized God's love and wisdom in Naomi and desired the same. She had forged a relationship with her mother-in-law during the ten years she was married, and she observed Naomi's faith and her interaction with Jehovah - the God of Israel.
Spiritually speaking, your husband is being wooed by God's Spirit in you! He has many opportunities to return to "Moab" (the world's ways) – but he often feels a "tug" at his heart and desires to be with you – sometimes unaware of God's perpetually drawing him near. God uses these times to gently bring your husband closer to the things of God and His love.

In the New Testament Jesus represents our Kinsman Redeemer. The goel is a "close relative" of the one he redeems. He must be able to pay the price of redemption, be willing to redeem, and be free himself. Jesus Christ is our brother – born of the seed of David. He redeems us with his precious blood. He willingly gave up his life for us, and was free from the curse of sin.
Isaiah 63:16 says, "You, O Lord, are our Father; Our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name." And Paul tells us in Titus 2:13-14, "…looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works."
Jesus wants to redeem your spouse. Our Lord meets all of the criteria for the goel and gave His life for him. He is willing to fulfill the law of love and preserve his soul for eternity. Jesus loves your mate and wants to see him embrace his destiny in Christ.
After receiving good wishes and blessings from the elders and people at the city gate, Boaz takes Ruth as his wife. Ruth later conceived and bore a son, Obed. In Matthew's account of the lineage of Jesus, Ruth's son is the grandfather of King David – a man after God's own heart. Naomi's heartache was turned to joy as she held her grandson, and God's purposes were fulfilled in the birth of the Messiah through this obedient girl from Moab.
Pray for your spouse to have a tender heart and ears to hear the call of Jesus. When he accepts the Lord Jesus as Savior, he will be included in the spiritual lineage of the redeemed! Your mate will have the veil lifted from his eyes and behold his Redeemer.
God's timing is perfect. Don't rush it… The fields are ripe for harvest.
Your spouse might still be gleaning in the Master's field.

Deborah McCarragherAuthor of Mission Possible

God changed my life as a sophomore in high school and I never got over it. But I did have a skeptical bent and always questioned everything, which led me to research many questions in depth, including the existence of God, attacks on the Bible, etc. This quest took me through three colleges and two graduate schools, where I concentrated on acquiring the tools of research (languages, logic, etc.) and studying important issues. I suppose my aptitude for writing came from those years of research and writing papers. I never set out to be a writer; but I wrote so much that it became natural to me. Do you remember Chariots of Fire, where the Olympic runner said that he felt God's pleasure when he ran? I sense God's pleasure when I research and write.
What inspired you to write your book?
Writing and publishing has been revolutionized through digital technologies such as social networking, the web, and print on demand. Yet, most authors seem confused about how to effectively use those tools to write, publish, and sell their books effectively. I talked to people at the Decatur Book Festival last weekend and was both amazed and heartbroken when authors told me about paying thousands of dollars for services they could have gotten free, or signing bad contracts with the wrong publishers, which made marketing their books very difficult.
There are so many conflicting, confusing voices out there today. Cherie and I decided to do some serious research into how successful low profile authors are publishing and selling their books, both in traditional and nontraditional publishing. Our discoveries were often counter-intuitive and differed with the majority of advice we were hearing from many of today's "experts."
What kinds of reactions has the book generated thus far?
We just published it this summer, but we have yet to hear any negative reaction. You can pretty much judge for yourself from the Amazon reviews. Readers are delighted to get the information and especially express appreciation that we put it in a very readable and even enjoyable style.
I was afraid that we might have packed in so much information that readers would be overwhelmed, but so far, everyone appreciates out putting all the details in there. Some read it straight through, but others read the chapters that apply specifically to their needs.
What's the main message that you'd like readers to take away from it?
If you want to write for yourself, keep a diary. But if you want to write for other people, learn the business of writing. Most authors seem to love honing their craft, but are shocked when they get their book out and nobody buys it. As someone said, "Writing is rewriting; publishing is marketing." People won't buy your books unless they first know they exist. I don't care if your books are on Amazon and in every bookstore in the country. If you fail to get the word out, nobody buys them. So take some time to learn the business of writing, not only from our book, but from meeting with fellow authors, joining writers' groups, etc.
What's next for you?
I just wrote a brief (50 page) critique of atheist Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion, that's I put up in beta. I'm offering it as a 99 cent Kindle to help students who read Dawkins and want to get the other side. It's called Richard Dawkins and His God Delusion: A Preliminary Critique of His Truth Claims. But now I want to stop writing for awhile and concentrate on marketing the books we have. I love speaking to writers' groups and getting the word out through so many effective ways we have available today.
Any final thoughts you'd like to share?
It's a great time to be a writer! If you've got a book inside of you, there are multiple, affordable ways to get it out there. Cherie and I love writing and publishing. And most of the ways we write, publish and market our books are very, very inexpensive, if not free. Never stop learning about writing and publishing. As Solomon praised wisdom, "She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire compares with her."
How can our readers learn more about you and contact you directly?

An Interview with J Steve Miller

Where Should We Go? Need Answers?

How often do you verbalize an intense need to find the answers when something goes wrong in your relationships? Is anyone listening? Do you cry out in frustration – looking at the ceiling – hoping you will be heard? Why do we do that?
In the New Testament, the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John all have their own rendition of Jesus preaching to the multitudes and feeding thousands. Matthew, Mark and John record Christ walking on the water and stilling the storm. While those two events are miraculous and nature defying, I find the passage regarding Peter's confession to be especially riveting. In Matthew 16:15-17 Jesus asks His disciples, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter then answers, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." To which Jesus replies, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven."
In chapter 6 of John's gospel we read that in the days following the feeding of the masses on the hills of Judea, many of them sought out Jesus and found Him on the other side of the sea. They remembered seeing the disciples boarding a boat and sailing across the sea – but they never saw Jesus with them. When they found Him they said to Him, "Rabbi, when did You come here?"
There were still many people who wanted to see Jesus rule as their King. They were desperate for change and longed for the day when Israel was no longer under Roman rule. But Jesus knew they followed Him because they ate of the loaves and were filled, not because they saw the miracles. They even discussed with Him the fact that their forefathers ate manna in the desert. Jesus then said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
Jesus told them, "I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world." Jesus most likely had hundreds of followers, many of whom left John the Baptist and followed after Him. However, scores of His disciples took offense with His words and John 6:66 tells us, "From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more."

Every time I read that passage I feel the same way… To Whom shall we go? You alone – JESUS – have the words of eternal life. Psalm 73:25-26 says this: "Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon the earth that I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
Now back to the initial question: Why do we look somewhere else other than Jesus when we have a crisis or a specific need or a secret longing? Our culture would tell us to go see a "chick flick" and feel better about our circumstances. It might beckon us to watch Dr. Phil or a self-help show to ease our pain. We can always pick up the latest copy of People or another gossip magazine to feel better about our broken friendships or failing marriage. Just turn up that radio, iPod, or home theater to drown out our anxiety and depression.
But what should we really do when we come to the end of ourselves and our own resources? Popular Christian author and speaker Joyce Meyer says, "Go to the Throne instead of the phone!" Seek the One who has the answers for life's turmoil and quandaries. Jesus Himself said, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened" (Matthew 7:7-8).
We should go to Him Who satisfies the hunger that no earthly sustenance can fill. He is the Word made flesh. He will fill you with His love and preserve you with His Spirit. He is your perfect serving and portion.
Jesus is your daily bread. He is the Manna come down from heaven. Feast on His goodness and mercy. Devour His Word and hide it in your heart. Consume His wisdom and understanding. Partake of His knowledge and apply it to your life. Drink in His love and quench your parched soul with His grace. What else would you need to survive besides bread and water?
Where should we go? Straight to Jesus – He is all you need…

Labor Day - A Christian Perspective

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.
It became an official American holiday in 1894. Labor Day celebrations were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families.
America's vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known. Labor Day is an opportunity for Americans to celebrate their diverse talents and the benefits of a capitalist society.
The nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership — namely, the American worker.
In our nation, the holiday is marked in several ways: All government offices are shut down, schools are closed, and most employees receive the day off from work. Labor Day traditionally marks the end of summer including picnics, boating, sporting events, and other outdoor activities.
As a laborer in the Kingdom of God, we also have high standards and goals to uphold.
The apostle Paul exhorts workers in Colossians 3:23, "And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men." Our work ethic is forged in God's Word, and as Christians, we are on display for all to see. Paul often spoke of his "labors" as he rebutted his opponents about supporting himself, or while praising a church-plant for their labor of love.
Paul writes to the church regarding work saying, "Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need." (Ephesians 4:28) Paul referred to his own service to his beloved children as "being poured out as a drink offering" and was glad for it! Our biblical work ethic is the backbone of the success this country has enjoyed for over 200 years.

For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister." Jesus Himself commends the church at Ephesus, in Revelation 2:2, saying, "I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil…" The apostle John writes these words from heaven, "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on…that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them."
After Jesus met the woman at the well in Samaria, He had a conversation with His disciples about missing a meal. In John 5:32 He said, "I have food to eat of which you do not know." His disciples were perplexed, and Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work." Jesus spoke to them about the souls that were ready for harvest. He told them that both those who sow and those who reap would rejoice, and jointly benefit from their heavenly wages and gathered fruit for eternal life. His Father's will was that His followers would preach the gospel to the masses and make disciples. John 5:38 sums it up best as Jesus said, "I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors." As followers and disciples of Christ, we too have that same mandate: to work out our labor of love.
This Labor Day, take time to reflect on the diversity and talents we share in the workforce for God's Kingdom.

Temptation Got the Best of You? (Summer Rerun)

He fasted forty days and forty nights. Matthew's text tells us Jesus was hungry. The Son of God had a natural human reaction to His human frailty - hunger pangs. Then the devil came to Him with a temptation: "If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." Jesus quoted scripture from the Torah (Deuteronomy 8:3) to rebuke him. The Word Himself spoke the words that pierced hell and caused demons to flee.
Two more times the devil brought temptations to Jesus, each one more tempting than the first. This form of testing appealed to Jesus' sovereignty, authority and diety. If only the Son of God would use His influence and power to benefit Himself. Satan did his best to thwart the plans His Father had ordained for His Son - but to no avail. The devil departed in humility and defeat.
We have the example of our Lord when we are tempted and at the mercy of the devil.
When we are in the wilderness of unforgiveness or the desert of rejection - we can use the same weapon to defeat the tempter. God's Word is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6), and we must wield it in confidence! We all face temptation , and it generally comes when we are tired, hungry or angry . We love to bash Eve for succumbing to temptation – but don't we all struggle with it?
Satan does not tempt us in generalities. He is far too clever for that. He likes to pick out something specific to hone in on. Take discontentment , for example. He will tell you that you deserve so much more, or maybe something better. He often zooms in on that one particular thing you don't have. He just aimed his poison dart at your "pride" and you fell for it. What happened to that shield of faith you were supposed to hold up for protection?
The enemy of our soul delights in focusing his deception on our desires or needs that haven't been met. He picks the time and place of our temptation and sends us an engraved invitation, hoping we'll reply quickly. He knows when we're tired, hungry, upset, depressed, lonely or sick that we'll be more venerable to his deceit. He patiently waits for us to let down our guard. God's Word tells us to "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life." (Proverbs 4:23)

He did the same with Eve and this is what he told her: "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every three of the garden'?" He simply twisted the truth and got her to question God's goodness and character. We must be careful not to fall for the same trick.
God may have given you a personal promise or verse to cling to regarding your mate. You may be waiting for God to do something special in your family, job situation, or with your children. Don't let the father of lies trick you into believing his falsehoods. He wants to destroy your trust in God and your confidence in Who He is.
We know from I John 2:16, "that all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father, but is of the world." Satan is the ruler of this age and our physical world. He has been influencing the practice of sin since the beginning - starting with Eve. We must watch for signs of envy and jealousy as we evaluate our circumstances. We must focus on God's sovereignty and His wisdom. We cannot lean unto our own understanding in matters pertaining to "the fairness of life". We must believe God and His Word, and leave the results in His hands.
God's Word is full of examples of those who have been tempted
- Sampson was tempted into a dangerous relationship with Delilah that compromised his God given strength and destiny.
- King Saul was tempted into disobeying the Lord regarding His specific commandments during wartime.
- King David was tempted to commit adultery, murder and deception with regards to Uriah and his wife Bathsheba.
- Judas was tempted by the chief priest and elders to "sell out" the Lord Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
- Ananias and Sapphira were tempted to lie to Peter about their "love gift" to the church.
- Peter was tempted to betray Jesus after His arrest and prompt transport to the high priest's house.
You may come to a point in your marriage when you were sure you heard from God about something, and then you didn't see any evidence of God working it out.
You can be tempted to take matters into your own hands - at your own peril of course! We must surrender our desires and plans to be denied, changed, or granted as God sees fit. Weariness can often cause us to want to "play God" in situations that are moving too slow or not down a path we deem appropriate to solve our problem. That is where we must rely on God's wise counsel and Divine plan. If through a broken heart He can bring His purposes to fruition, then thank Him for breaking your heart.
In Genesis 39 Joseph was tempted...
But he knew enough to " flee temptation ". Though Potiphar's wife continually propositioned him, Joseph cried out in protest "...how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"
In the New Testament Paul tells us, "There is no temptation that has overtaken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it." (I Corinthians 10:13) Temptation is around every turn, and in every decision.
I was tempted to contemplate divorce not long after my conversion to Christ, but God plainly spoke to my spirit that it was not an option for me. God promised me a new husband with the "same man"! I Corinthians 7:14, 16 says, "For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy… For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?" You must stay strong and focused on Jesus. Use His Word to diffuse all temptation - As Jesus said, "It is written…" So be it! Amen!

My Finny Fin Fin is must read for your little one! Author Judi Chesshir truly captured the gentle tug of the deep blue sea with this adventurous tale of three young dolphins venturing beyond the safety of their family and home. The story is well written, easy to follow, kept my interest, and lured me to want to know more. An important lesson is expertly woven into the story that your child will surely recognize. I listened to the audio while reading and felt that it was a wonderful addition to an already good story. The shark's voice added character and will certainly cause a stir among a young audience. All in all, My Finny Fin Fin is a winner and I highly recommend this book to any reader, young or young at heart.

Weary? Take On His Yoke

If you are tired and worn out , submit to Jesus and get under His Yoke of direction. Let Him properly place it on you so that you may come along side Him in your life's journey. Ready yourself for a new path forward that is free from struggle and missteps. Have a mindset of being equally yoked .
So, what exactly is a yoke and how does it pertain to us in our relationship with Jesus?
A yoke , also known as an oxbow, is a bar of wood so constructed as to unite two animals, usually oxen, enabling them to work in the fields together – side by side. It is often custom fitted for comfort.
In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul often said he was a bondservant to the Lord Jesus, implying he was yoked to Him in service . Paul also admonishes believers not to be yoked with unbelievers in marriage– as it is a picture of the spiritual struggle that will ensue. Two cannot walk as one when they are spiritually mismatched.
A yoke was also used figuratively in the sense of servitude or bondage. After He reproached the cities in which He was rejected, Jesus extended an invitation to any and all who would respond, saying, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden [weary], and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For, My yoke is easy and My burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)
There are four (4) action verbs in Matthew 11:28-30 - come, take, learn, and find .
Come implies an invitation – a bidding to move away from your previous position. Take implies a voluntary decision to receive something Learn implies the beginning of a new mindset or way of doing things. Find implies the discovery of something unknown or previously unrecognized

In the classic book The Pilgrim's Progress, John Bunyan says this in his first chapter: "So I saw in my dream, that just as Christian came up with the Cross, his burden loosed from off his shoulders, and fell from off his back… Then was Christian glad and lightsome…" When we let go of our burdens and take up Christ's yoke , it is easier and not cumbersome. It gives us a sigh of relief and a soulful rest like none other. Christ's example of endurance in the face of hostility from a lost world is our hope. Hebrews 12:3 declares, "For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls."
In his commentary, Matthew Henry states in regards to taking up your yoke: "The rest He promises is a release from the drudgery of sin, not from the service of God. To call those who are weary and heavy laden, to take a yoke upon them, looks like adding affliction to the afflicted; but the pertinence of it lies in the words of Jesus to take up His yoke, which is easy."
Yoke yourself to Christ and let Him lead you in the paths of righteousness and peaceful submission. He is gentle and loving and trustworthy. Our souls will prosper when we are conformed to His perfect will.
The following poem was written by me in April of 1998 during an intense time of prayer and intercession. I believe its prophetic message was given to me as an encouragement during the wait. Be blessed… Your Husband - My gift to you
Daughter of Mine, come closeand listen to Me.I chose you first. My strength is made perfect in your weakness.Your husband is my workmanship.I have ordained this marriage. It is a divine joining- a partnership"till death do you part."
My grace is sufficient for you.Do not take offense. His actions are not governed by My spirit. He does not yet know Me as you do.You are the apple of My eye;it is my good pleasureto give you the desires of your heart. That would be your husband - would it not?
Your obedience to Me and your humblenessin the face of heartbreak are your sacrificialoffering to Me - one in which I treasure.I am your husband now, for awhile. Let me comfort and love you.
Daughter, take heart. You are not forgotten. Can you see him? I am creating in him a new man;in My likeness. Be patient… Trust Me… Wait.
"For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife…""For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband?" (I Corinthians 7: 14, 16)

About Janet:
I've weathered tornadoes of pain during my lifetime. When I was 32, Retinitis Pigmentosa robbed me of my eyesight and winds of anguish thrust me into emotional darkness. I was tempted to sink into self-pity and stay there. The adversity intensified with marital infidelity and financial hardship. Then, years later, another storm buffeted me, bringing even greater heartache. My son, Joe, was tragically killed in a senseless altercation. Hoping for justice, I endured the trial of the man responsible. But to our astonishment, he was acquitted of all charges. "How unfair," I screamed inside. Resentment, anger and sorrow threatened to consume me. Lost in my heartache, I groped in desperation.
Finally, I turned to God, and He unlocked a new world for me through the verse that says, "Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33).
I clung to that reassurance and, one step at a time, gained strength, received comfort and rekindled the drive to keep going.
When Janet is not writing blogs, stories for my magazine columns, for anthologies or chapters for her books, she's traveling across the country and internationally for speaking engagements and mission trips.
