Like Pretty Woman but no Prostitutes
Hey, all!
Happy Monday!
Well, I spent a lot of money...but I now have some really nice new clothes.
All well deserved by me. :)
What did I get?
Looky!
Uh, no that's not me. But it IS the dress I bought. I wasn't looking for a dress but when I passed by a store with this in the window, I HAD to try it on.
I didn't know until I came home but it was one of those "As Seen in O, The Oprah Magazine" dresses.
(Apparently, I have good taste)
Got this dress too from Athleta. -->
But I also bought four pairs of pants (3 were jeans!), a few sweaters, a jean jacket, and a skirt. WHEW!
When I finally got out of the car with all my bags, my friends were laughing because they said I looked like Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman--minus the mean sales clerk. :)
(Although the waitress at our lunch spot wasn't exactly sunshine and sweetness) So I guess it was sort of like Pretty Woman. LOL
~~~~~~~~~~
In other news, I went to my nephew's graduation on Friday. He is now a NJ State Trooper. It was a three hour ceremony/presentation and quite impressive.
I'm so proud of him!
And that was my week.
What did I miss?
Gone Fish--er, Shopping!
Happy Monday, all!
© Alexk | Dreamstime Stock Photos I'm off to take a little shopping day with a few of my girlfriends today!
I desperately need new clothes!
Not sure if I told you all, but I've lost 20 pounds. Actually, 20.8 pounds.
YES, and true dat.
You would think that would be a good thing, but now my skinny jeans are too big. In fact, everything looks terrible because it's too big. I NEED a new wardrobe. So that's where we're heading.
It's a bit of a road trip, since we're not simply going to the mall. We'll do lunch, yada, yada, and I hope to come back with some swanky new threads by the end of the day.
Be patient, and I'll stop in to see you all this week.
Have a good one!
What's the most weight you've ever lost?
Do you ever take an all-girls shopping day?
Special Guest Wendy Paine Miller on the perk of a novella
Happy Monday, all!
I'm so pleased to have one of THE nicest and MOST thought-provoking bloggers I know here today:
Wendy Paine Miller.
**Commit her name to your memory because she is going places and you can say I saw her here on my blog first. **
Time in a Book—Why I Wrote a Novella for Women
What’s one thing women would say they’d love more of? Besides shoes, of course.
Time.
So that’s exactly what I’m giving women with my debut novella, THE DISAPPEARING KEY.
How’s that you say? My novella (releasing as an e-book early October 2013) is half the length of a novel, but it consists of all the depth and book club conversation-worthiness you’d find in a full-length novel.
What inspired me to craft a novella?
I’ve heard a certain phrase one too many times while attending my local book clubs. “I didn’t have time to get through the whole book.”
Real Simple managing editor Kristin van Ogtrop admits, “There is a startling connection between scheduling free time andhappiness…”
Some related stats relating to women and time:
§ 49 percent of women say they do not have enough free time.
§ Women who set aside regular free time are ultimately more satisfied with their lives – 50 percent report being satisfied versus 41 percent of those who regularly postpone their free time.
(resource: http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/real-simple-women-and-time-survey_b55552)
I’m a huge advocate of women securing free time—time to read and do things we enjoy most.
Do you schedule your free time?
Thanks, Wendy!
I'll admit that I have been enjoying novellas more and more because of the time factor thing.
Here is a little bit about Wendy's book coming out next month:
Blurb for THE DISAPPEARING KEY:
Gabrielle Bivane never expected parenting a teenager would be this hard, but she never expected stillborn Oriana to live to see fourteen, either. The night of Oriana's birth, Gabrielle and her husband Roy fused their genetic and engineering geniuses to bring back all that was lost to them—at a cost.
The secret must be kept.
Oriana Bivane senses she’s not like the other girls her age, but the time has come for her to change all that. She’s tired of secrets, but does she confide in the wrong person?
The life-giving key, suddenly missing, must be found.
Here is a little bit about Wendy:
BIO: Wendy is a native New Englander who feels most alive when she’s laughing, reading, writing or taking risks. She’s authored nine novels and is currently writing what she hopes will be your future book club pick. Her work has been published in numerous anthologies and online sites. Wendy lives with her husband and their three girls in a home bursting with imagination and hilarity.
She’s represented by Rachelle Gardner of Books & Such Literary Agency.
Website: http://thoughtsthatmove.blogspot.com/
Thanks again for stopping by, Wendy, and many happy sales for your book!
So how about it, readers, do you schedule your free time?
Thinking like a Reader
Hey, I'm super pleased with my WIP right now! I only have a few chapters left to edit and then I'm done. WOOT!
(Until the next WIP)
That means promotion will start soon too. Boo! Anyhew, I was thinking about the last FaceBook party I was involved with and what readers had said there when asked what kinds of giveaways they liked receiving.
I automatically assumed we would hear things like ebooks, books, gift cards, etc...
(Things I obviously like! Ha!) But no.
What do Readers Really Want?
Here is what some said:
1) "Readers LOVE to win CD's with the book's playlist on it! That way we can read the book while listening to it. Just a little thought for you all."
2) "Anything that can help us readers feel what you felt while writing the story, see what you want us to see, smell what the air was like on a hot summer night in Georgia (or wherever the story is), it just makes us fall more in love with the books. We become attached to them and the authors."
3)"The simplest things make us readers happy. A soundtrack, pretty smelling candles that go with the theme of the book, a sentimental trinket that was mentioned in the book. We want to be a part of the story, as well. Maybe a lace hanky that was the heroine's grandma's, etc..."
I thought that was really cool! Why didn't I think of that?
Since learning that, as I've been editing, I've been listening to music. I can't write to music but I can do some editing with it.
I decided to pick the music like I was creating a movie soundtrack. You know, to put me in the mood for each chapter. I'm really excited how this music list came together and how it sparked my creativity for the story!
I think for one of my giveaways, I will either cut a CD with my playlist on it or do a IPod giveaway with the playlist on it. Something a little different. Maybe even throw in a pack of beef jerky and a magic eight ball with it too.
(You would have to read the book to know why.) :-)
That's it for me today. I'm off to edit.
How about you? If you're a reader, what kind of giveaways do you like to receive from authors?
If you're an author, have you made a playlist for any of your books?
Back To Reality and Reality TV
Happy Monday, all!
School started. FINALLY. It actually started Thursday,
but the kiddo
had two half days and was home by noon.
Noon? What's that all about?
I can't get anything done by noon.
Grrr....
So I'm officially counting school as starting TODAY,
which means
I have to get back to
my normal writing routine--yes, and back to reality.
**On a side note, all commenters for the month of Sept over
there will be entered in a drawing for a $10 Amazon GC.
So stop by! :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sox. I haven't talked about him in ages. He is a total sweetheart.
Five months old now.
He's doing really well, too.
NO accidents in the house. NO chewing issues.
However...

He does like to dig. As a result, I have little divots all over the yard and when he does that he manages to get mud/dirt caked into his paws. That makes this Momma a very ANGRY MOMMA. Especially when this Momma is all dressed up and ready to go out to dinner.
More grrrrr...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh, and I've found a new favorite TV show!
DUCK DYNASTY.
Yes, it's reality TV about a family in the south who started a company making products for duck hunting and became very wealthy.
At first, I just thought it was about a bunch of rednecks, but I really enjoy watching the family dynamics and their humor. Plus, it is one of the few popular reality shows that actually promotes good family values. Gee, imagine that?
And that's all from me. Have a great week!
What about you? Are you back to your
writing routine or have you never left it?
Have you watched Duck Dynasty?
OK. What did I do to my blog? Everything is shifted. HELP
Yay, Laborers!
Hey, it's Labor Day in the U.S.
So I'm taking the day off. :)
But you might not be, so I'll be popping around the blogosphere this week to do some visiting and catching up with you all then.
Have a great week!
Freebies and Parties
Happy Monday, all!
First of all, BIG HUGE THANKS to everyone who helped me spread the word of my KISSING KENDALL 99 cent sale.
Amazon kept it that price all week, so that was a very nice little perk for a book that has been out since December. :)
~~~
In other news, I was able to cash in some American Express credit card points recently .
So for FREE I got these items:
1-- a DOUBLE Belgium waffle maker (no more one waffle at a time)
2--an espresso/cappuccino machine (I'm becoming quite the barista now)
3--a new microwave oven (my last one was only a year old and completely went up in flames) LITERALLY
Nice, huh? It was like Christmas! Although, my hubby likes to point out, it wasn't exactly for free since we did have to spend money on our credit card to earn the points.
A minor technicality.
~~~~
And in OTHER other news, I will be participating in an Entangled Bliss Facebook Party this Thursday!
Have a GREAT week!
Oh, and in case you missed this on Facebook, I took this shot on my IPhone when I was out at dinner with friends last Thursday.
Not a bad view, huh?
Hemp seed, Egrets and Other Misc Ramblings
Happy Monday, all!
I feel like a complete HOG--even though I've lost weight and have been keeping up with my exercising.
I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that my clothes are so baggy. I actually lost a whole size (hold the applause), but because my clothes don't fit right, nobody knows. LOL
I've been really in to working out with weights and the days that I do, I like to make sure I supplement my protein so I actually build muscle. One of the things I've been having is a protein shake sprinkled with a little hemp seed.
Yes, hemp seed. It's pretty tasty. They look like sesame seeds and they have nice nutty flavor. It can be sprinkled on almost anything. I get mine from my health food store.
**********
In other news, I went to shut the sliders in my kitchen yesterday afternoon and when I looked in my backyard, I was like, "Gah!"
There was a HUGE bird.
My neighbor thinks it's an egret.
Hubby managed to guide it out of the yard, but it went directly under our neighbor's porch. We're going to call animal control because it's still there this morning. I'm wondering if it's hurt. We'll see what they say.
**********
And lastly, I woke up to ANOTHER surprise. LOL
Amazon
has lowered the price of my sweet romance
KISSING KENDALL
to 99 cents again.
(Don't know for how long) It's their doing, not mine.
And if you don't want to buy it, I would so appreciate it if you could TWEET about it instead:
KISSING KENDALL by @jennifershirk is only 99cents on @amazon! http://www.amazon.com/Kissing-Kendall-Maritime-Entangled-ebook/dp/B00BFQAPVM/ref=sr_1_4_title_0_main?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1376907033&sr=1-4#romance #ebooks @RomanceIsBliss Grab it while u can!
THANK SO MUCH for your support!
And that's all from me today!
Have a great week!
Have you ever heard of or tried HEMP SEED?
Have you ever had to call animal control before?
Summer is NOT over
Happy Monday, all!
Everybody around me keeps talking about summer as if it's in the past. "This was a weird summer", "Summer went by so fast", "It's getting cooler out summer is over".
Uh...it's early August, people. Summer is not over.
Besides, I'm in no rush to see it go or start the new school year. I find now that I'm getting older, I don't like to rush these things. (Because that means I AM GETTING OLDER)
And we can't have that. LOL
The hubby plans on "cheating" this week from work a few days so we do some biking around town, spend some time on the beach, and even go out to breakfast and lunch a few days. It'll be like having a stay-cation. :)
I plan on maximizing the most out of these last few weeks of August and enjoying the rest of the summer.
One last thing. I was on the beach yesterday with my family and we see like five guys walking down the beach in different color speedos. To top it off, they were holding shaker weights (I kid you not) and it said "bootylicious" on their rump.
I started cracking up. (I'm sure they were doing it on a dare or joke) so naturally I HAD to take a picture.
The things you see on the Jersey shore...
And I think that's about enough from me.
Is your summer over or are you still enjoying?
I'm back!
Happy Monday!
Glacier LakeIt was nice to take the week off and relax. We actually ended up going out to MONTANA and visiting some friends.
It was my fourth time going out there and always a really fun time.
Basically, we did a lot of hiking and driving, but also threw in a boat tour in the Missouri River and a trolley tour of downtown Helena. Oh, and we went to the Lewis and Clark Caverns too!
I chickened out and did not put Sox in a kennel. I ended up giving him to my mom--who practically begged me to watch him. I don't think she realized how much work watching a puppy would be. She told me she saved his life three times! (She had to fish out two nails and a pin from his mouth) LOL
Hubby and kiddo stocked on beef jerky here!
From our boat tour
He's like a toddler...
But I guess it wasn't too bad because she called yesterday to ask about the dog. (I think she misses him) :)
Anyhew, kiddo starts surf camp this morning and I need to get back to my writing.
Did I miss anything while I was away?
Have you ever been to Montana?
I chickened out and did not put Sox in a kennel. I ended up giving him to my mom--who practically begged me to watch him. I don't think she realized how much work watching a puppy would be. She told me she saved his life three times! (She had to fish out two nails and a pin from his mouth) LOL
He's like a toddler...
But I guess it wasn't too bad because she called yesterday to ask about the dog. (I think she misses him) :)
Anyhew, kiddo starts surf camp this morning and I need to get back to my writing.
Did I miss anything while I was away?
Have you ever been to Montana?
