Is Your Life Full of Drama? Here’s How to Stop the Cycle.

Last month, I read The Power of TED by David Emerald and loved it. The book contains so many useful ideas and lightbulb moments, I made a short video series covering some of the key points. Watch below for a brief introduction to the victim orientation, the creator orientation, and how to shift from the drama triangle to the empowerment dynamic.

What is the “dreaded drama triangle”?

How to Be a Creator, Not a Victim

How to Shift from Victim to Creator

What are your biggest takeaways from these videos? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

P.S. Do you enjoy the video format? Let me know!

Reflections on Alive in Berlin & a New Online Home for Makers and Doers

I first heard about the Alive in Berlin conference early last year. Talked about as Europe’s answer to WDS, it was very cool to hear about a personal development conference that catered to those of us on this side of the pond. The timing meant it wasn’t possible to attend last year (I had just returned from Mexico), so I jumped at the chance to get involved this year. Spoiler alert: it was awesome.

This week, I’m writing about my reflections and biggest takeaway here (my new site!), which seemed fitting as it is also a product of AIB :)

HANNAH BRAIME (2)

This is a new online home for a wider conversation about meaningful work and purpose. If Becoming Who You Are is about being, hannahbraime.com is about translating that into doing. It’s a way of keeping this space purely personal development, and moving discussions around creativity and entrepreneurship elsewhere. If these topics pique your interest, you’re invited to come on over and join me.

As with any new home, things are a little sparse right now, but I’ll be adding some more virtual furniture, tools and resources over the coming weeks and months.

In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you: what would you like to hear more about here at Becoming Who You Are? Leave a comment and let me know.

#85: How to Create a Deeper Sense of Meaning and Purpose in Your Life

If you want to create a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in your life (but get sidetracked by all the wonky purpose-finding advice out there), this week’s episode is for you. I’m going to share a couple of ideas I’ve found helpful when it comes to cultivating more purpose in my life, including:

Why it’s important to differentiate between the mission and the vehicle when it comes to your purpose
Why the idea that there’s one “thing” out there for everyone is a myth
What you need to do to get a clearer sense of the things that add meaning to your life

How to Boost Your Confidence (in a Non-Icky Way)

A couple of weeks ago, I hosted a workshop at the Alive in Berlin conference. It was totally fun and fulfilling and, until a few minutes into the presentation when I started to relax, I was also eyeing the door and half-wondering whether it was too late to make a run for it. Public speaking is something I love when I’m standing up and doing it, but right up until that moment it truly feels like the worst. thing. ever.

And that’s part of the reason I do it: because it’s a stretch. It’s also a great exercise in self-trust. I am not an affirmations-in-the-mirror kind of person so I use these times of terror growth opportunities to look for other (less cringeworthy) ways to boost my confidence. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

First of all, remember that you don’t need to feel confident in order to do something.

Confidence is not a prerequisite for action, even though we often like to believe it is. Yes, it feels more comfortable to take action on something when we feel 100% confident that we’re not going to fall flat on our faces or monumentally screw up, but let’s face it: we’re all human and it’s never a given that we’re not going to do that.

It’s also important to remember that a lack of confidence isn’t necessarily evidence that we’re not capable of doing something. Correlation doesn’t equal causation.

With that being said, I’ve found that confidence is part of a three-step process:

Action -> clarity -> confidence

The first step is taking action and trying things out (avoidance is not a confidence booster—quelle surpise). It’s easy to overthink this step, to want to make sure we’re focusing on the “right” action, and to get stuck in analysis paralysis. But this stage is really about experimentation. Take the pressure off, give yourself a free pass to choose the “wrong” action, and just do something.

The reason taking action on something—anything—is important is because it brings us to the next step, which is clarity. Clarity comes when we get feedback from our actions. That feedback might be “Hey, that wasn’t so bad after all. Maybe I’m on to something here!” It might also be “Oops, guess that didn’t go so well…”

Whatever the outcome is, your action will lead you to a sense of what’s right for you and what’s not right for you, what works and what doesn’t.

And this is where confidence comes from: clarity around the present.

Confidence doesn’t come from knowing how, it comes from know what. It doesn’t come from certainty that we can do something with grace and dignity 100% of the time: it comes from knowing what we need to try next.

If I’m hungry and my cupboards are bare, I know the next step is to go to the supermarket. I can’t guarantee that I’m going to do an amazing job at going to the supermarket—I usually forget half the things I go for and it’s not my favourite thing to do in the world—but I also don’t think “Eh, I’m not sure I feel confident about going to the supermarket.” I want food, so I go. I get food and, whatever else happens, mission accomplished. I don’t stop to question my confidence levels because my desired outcome is clear.

Even if we don’t have a crystal clear vision for what our next step looks like, we can still feel confidence in knowing “This is the path for me” or “It’s time for a change.”

That is where confidence comes from: trying things out, seeing what happens, and figuring it out from there.

What action can you take this week to feel more confident about a particular area or issue in your life? Leave a comment and share your ideas.

What Makes You Who You Are?

This was the question that started this website: what makes us who we are? What turns us into who we’re not? And how do we bridge the gap between the two?

“What makes you you?” is a huge question with many possible answers, many variables and many aspects that are still shrouded in mystery beyond current understanding.

Here’s my take on this:

At our very core, we are the electrical impulses running through our brain: the trillions of neural pathways. We are those pathways, translated into thought, speech, action and habit. We are our evolutionary drives to survive, adapt and reproduce.

And we are so much more.

We are a presence in the lives of those around us. The ideas, gifts and visions we share with the world.

We are complex, contradictory, and imperfect. We are also amazing creatures capable of understanding concepts like mortality, existentialism, symbolism, puns, and other devices of deeper meaning.

We are capable of consciously overriding our evolutionary drives.

We are tiny cogs in a big, roaring machine.

We are capable of hearing and being heard, of seeing and being seen, and of moving and being moved.

We are capable of change, growth, of recognising that our time on this planet is finite, and of making the most out of it.

At the end of it all, we return to dust.

And then, we are memories, genetic code, and whatever legacy we leave behind.

Every choice we make is a drop in an ocean, and those drops create ripples that pass onwards into the future.

At the end of it all, what will have made you who you are?

What If You Tear It All down and Start Again?

For the last six months, I’ve been craving change. Change that reflects how my business has evolved, how I’ve evolved, and where I see this heading next. I’ve felt a yearning for greater transparency, a slightly different focus, a different way of coaching, and to let go of the old to make room for the new.

I spent months telling my accountability buddy “This week! This week I am definitely going to sort out my website!” then not doing it (and when you’re a coach, that integrity gap between saying then not doing feels 10x wider and 10x worse). I over-thought the process, experienced perpetual decision fatigue, and managed to turn the whole thing into an existential crisis. Needless to say, for all my good intentions, I didn’t do what I wanted to do.

Until I did.

What changed was this: instead of taking what existed and trying to redo, I just sat down and imagined what it would look like if I started again from scratch.

I opened up a new Scrivener file, asked myself: “If I burned this whole thing to the ground and started all over again, what would I create?” and started writing down everything that came to mind.

The ideas started flooding in. The answers became clearer, and the six-month fog lifted. Were some of these ideas rubbish? Absolutely. Do I have 100% clarity now? Is my expression perfect? Hell no, but as one of my favourite sayings go, “action beats perfection.”

Starting from scratch gave me the permission I needed to let go of the old to make room for the new; to clear out old language, old site pages, blog posts that are no longer relevant, create the Purpose Library, and generally give my online living room a good old spring clean.

That’s been my week, and I’m wondering if there’s something in your life that needs this kind of attention too:

If you could tear it all down and start again, what would you do differently?

(Side note: I asked Mr BWYA this question and he said “I wouldn’t have started my site on Blogger.” You have been warned).

The beautiful thing about this question, like all good questions, is that it works in any situation that could benefit from a good dose of clarity: unfulfilling career paths, a project that isn’t working out quite as we’d hoped, muddy lifestyle choices, relationship ruts, and more.

The answer might be comforting, it might be startling, it might be terrifying, but it’s a fast path straight to the heart of what we truly want—and to what comes next.
