We are launched!
Today’s launch of A Great Big Night at the Lunenburg School of the Arts with Block Shop Books was so lovely, and had me reflecting on how my family have helped uplift my books and my fortitude for so many years. My mom made cookies and ‘teeny tiny rucksacks’ to give away as prizes; Nick captured it all on camera; Justin brought the kids, who all helped in their own sweet ways.
Times have been strange and stormy, haven’t they? I’m so grateful to have been able to gather for some storytelling about community care, resilience, and ‘riff-raff’.
The excellent folks at Block Shop, in addition to showing up to supply our books table at the launch party, also made me super-chuffed today with the first little review and recap of the book! These girls are serious experts—I’m beaming.
“A friend of mine who writes for children insists picture books must be read aloud to be fully appreciated. Since my daughter wasn't around - who at 14 will still sometimes humour me with a read-through - I had to read this title aloud to myself, and that was when it really popped and zinged.
The music train was a happy sight / Clickity-clackity three on bikes / Rolling in for a great big night.
The animals of the great green forest are abuzz with news that roving frog musicians have rolled into town with a motley collection of instruments. Soon they are all pounding the grass flat with jigs and reels, all except Grouse, that is, who disdains such idle lollygagging. Yet when a storm blows through and takes Grouse’s house and treasured belongings with it, those same lollygaggers come to his rescue. A toe-tapping rallying song summons a jolly crowd that makes quick work of cleaning up and rebuilding Grouse’s home. Riotous collage-style illustrations in this lyrical picture book help convey the cacophony of the travelling players who spread tunes, fun and, as even Grouse must concede, community throughout the forest.” —Anne-Marie, Block Shop Books

Book birthday
I was so thrilled to come home to a shipment from the Nimbus warehouse: fresh off the press, A GREAT BIG NIGHT is in the world! If you’re distant from the book launch on October 4, 2020 in Lunenburg, keep an eye out on my author page on Facebook for the livestream — after that, order yours from our local Block Shop Books, which will have a fresh stack of signed copies to ship as you like!
Doesn’t it just feel like the world needs a froggy folk trio to bring us all together after a storm? This book is full of love, community, and joy, and woodland grass pounded flat underfoot. It’s what the riff-raff brings.

Podcast: From the Hart
I had such a far-ranging conversation with Ed Hart for his 'From the Hart' podcast. We talked about the curious wilderness of post-loss faith and post-loss love; what prescription we can give to our kids for navigating through an uncertain world; and why creativity can save us. Ed is a Christian, and has been a fascinating pen pal of sorts as he read Notes for the Everlost. Here, we wandered into spiritual territory, a first for me in-conversation. And I’m so happy to have done so with such a warm soul.

Cover reveal

Well, gosh. Isn’t that something else? It’s pure magic to see a story come to life, interpreted by an artist, when it’s been simmering inside a writer’s mind for years. Working with the brilliant Josée Bisaillon and the fantastic team at Nimbus Publishing has been a delight, and I can hear the fiddles and mandolins and bodhrán drums ringing through the forest already.
It feels official, now. A GREAT BIG NIGHT hits the shelves — with a rollicking party to match, I hope! — in Fall 2020. Watch this space for book launch news, with any luck in a renewed and ready-for-fun, post-lockdown world. And on from there to the schools, festivals, and musical playtime with little ones again. What excitement!

All in this together

What a delightful gift! For a boost in challenging times, Nimbus Publishing just released a few more spot illustrations in-progress (yay for the amazing Josée Bisaillon!) for my next children’s picture book, A GREAT BIG NIGHT coming this fall.
It’s all about community coming together to spread a little joy, love, and rolled-up sleeves when times are tough. Porcupine knits! Beaver chews fresh wood. Bear brings a nice blueberry salad. And three gentle frogs rally them all with a wagon full of songs. Can’t wait for September 2020!
