A Kirkus star!

kirkus.jpg

Kirkus Reviews are among the top-shelf of accolades, and I’m thrilled that A GREAT BIG NIGHT was awarded a coveted star. From the review:

“The rhythmic, vibrant verse text, peppered with lively onomatopoeic sounds, dances off the pages, begging to be read aloud.

Wild, whimsical, and slightly surreal illustrations, rendered in sprightly collage and brilliantly colored paint, perfectly capture the raucous energy of the jiving frogs and hilarious bevy of cavorting animals as well as the terror of the fierce storm and the harmonious, attitude-altering camaraderie of neighbors helping one another.

Riff-raff rules in this joyful, playful, high energy great big night.”

I just about danced a jig. Many thanks to the readers at Kirkus, whose approval all of us are tickled to receive.

SHEQuest I

186985964_4131961900158505_6636882157540876714_n.jpg Part One: Struggle as Enlivening Fuel for the Soul

A meandering, firey talk with the beautiful Estelle Thomson. We began with one conversation and kept going for a set of three, she in her art studio and me in my third-floor closet.

We are sisters in grief and sass though we travel far beyond that, relevant (I hope!) for all of us in this second puberty phase of life riddled with so much change and doubt and stuckness and freedom. I am so happy to share part one.

Listen on Spotify Listen on iTunes Listen on SheQuest.com

Kate Inglis, author of Notes for the Everlost: A Field Guide to Grief and host Estelle Thomson kick-off a 3-part conversation on grief, body, triggers and creativity. Almost 14 years ago Kate was pregnant with identical twin boys and gave birth 3 months early. Ben survived, Liam didn’t. A radically honest conversation on the wild west that his NICU, the bereaved motherhood recovery (physical, emotional and spiritual) journey (“the luckiest most unlucky mother”) and musings on the tragic magic of grief. —Estelle Thomson

Despite the Odds

Near the end of 2020 I had a cozy, far-ranging conversation with Mark Vander Ark for his DESPITE THE ODDS Podcast, as featured on Arianna Huffington’s Thrive Global network. We talked about grief and life after loss, healing, and the concept of ‘acceptance’ — along with a fresh appreciation for the creative fuel of discontent. Here’s a quick video clip. To listen to the full audio episode, click below and pop over to Spotify. Thanks, Mark!

Book Me!

Costas_Halavrezos_0113ps2.jpg

I had a wonderful chat with beloved former CBC anchor Costas Halavrezos, such a voice in our family kitchen through the years, about A Great Big Night. From his Book Me! Podcast: “Kate Inglis's A Great Big Night is a delightful parable about performers and their audiences finding each other. Josée Bisaillon's joyful and witty illustrations complete a book that will be loved by readers and young listeners alike.” Listen to the episode here:

Cabin Tales

  cabintales.jpg

I was thrilled to be a guest on the excellent Cabin Tales Podcast hosted by fellow author Catherine Austen Writing. This episode is on creating tension and the process of writing, featuring me and four other authors who, happily, echo my difficulty with forward momentum in my first drafts. I just can't quit you, editing! #twostepsforwardthreestepsback

Share this absolutely golden series with any aspiring or otherwise keen writer — it's made with teens in mind but I'm already gobbling up episodes and feeling so bolstered by the voices of others in the middle of manuscripts. Much love from the crowsnest studio, and thanks Catherine!

[EDIT] loves riff-raff

unnamed.jpg

To say I’m thrilled to see A Great Big Night passed around the offices of the most gorgeous magazine to grace Atlantic Canada is an understatement. Thanks, [EDIT]!

“The most essential children's book you need this fall is this magical, rollicking, rhyming picture book about music-making critters, community and friendship.

The children storming the [EDIT] office each day at 3pm have all devoured it more than a dozen times since we purchased a copy for everyone on the team last week.

Kate Inglis’s playful and inventive language and Josée Bisaillon’s rich and textured illustrations bring to life this happy group of friends filling the great green forest with their music. Essential reading for kids and parents everywhere.”
