Friday Five.

Why do I only think to do these on late-Friday afternoon or Saturday morning?

1.  Tomorrow, it will be exactly FOUR MONTHS until October 5, 2010.  And you know what that means . . .  :-)

2.  Oh, and speaking of FREEFALL!  It is currently oot and aboot in some places of the world.  And, by that, I mean that it's getting advance reads by some Tenners, Traveling ARC Tours (starting tomorrow, I believe), and trade reviewers.  If it were possible to simultaneously scream, "Yaaaaaaay! and "Eeeeeeek!"...

Book launch ponderings.

My publicist is working on setting up a book signing event in NYC the weekend after FREEFALL is released in October.  I don't know what's going to happen with that, but I'm moving forward as if she's already worked her magic.  What we're hoping for is an event on 10/10/10 with a group of other Tenners all signing with me.  Fun!

Meanwhile, I'm trying to make decisions about a book launch event to take place in the Seattle area the following weekend on 10/17/10, perhaps.  This would be my offici...

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Kristina McBride

Kristina McBride is the author of THE TENSION OF OPPOSITES, a YA novel released by Egmont USA on May 25, 2010.

It’s been two years since Noelle disappeared. Two years since her bike was discovered, sprawled on a sidewalk. Two years of silence, of worry, of fear.

For those two long years, her best friend Tessa has waited, living her own life in a state of suspended animation. Because how can she allow herself to enjoy a normal high school life if Noelle can’t? How dare she have other...

Seattle Art Museum visit.

Yesterday, Dwayne's parents took us to the Downtown Seattle Art Museum.  We've all been there before, but we want to see the special exhibits this time: Andy Warhold Media Works:  love fear pleasure lust pain glamour death and Kurt.

The Kurt (Cobain) exhibit was kind of . . . strange to me.  It was noisy with about six Nirvana songs all playing at once and the items included mostly fan art of Kurt.  I think reading HEAVIER THAN HEAVEN a few years ago demystified Kurt Cobain for me, as well as...

Email drafts.

I was just cleaning out my email drafts folder in one of my accounts and found this one that I composed, but never sent to my agent:

Dearest Jim,

Please save me.

Love,
Mindi

It was dated 4/29/10, which was less than a month ago.  I don't even remember what I needed saving from.  Something writing related, of course.

FREEFALL excerpt - Babel fished.

My friend Stephanie Perkins, author of ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS did a very fun exercise at her blog today where she had an excerpt from her book translated from English to Japanese and back to English again using Babel Fish.

I thought it was too much fun, so I did the same for an excerpt of FREEFALL using the same method for good nonsensical fun.  (Mine is English-->Chinese-->English.)

Here's Seth getting mad at one of his friends and storming out!

“It has died, you saw. I had died”.

He who...

Friday 5 - Television Edition.

1.  The last ever LOST is coming up this Sunday.  I'm glad!  I've been watching since season 2 (and rented season 1 on DVD to catch up).  I like the show, but it gives me a headache.  I'm looking forward to no more headaches!

2.  The last ever 24 is coming up in a couple of weeks.  I'm glad!  I've been watching since season 4 and I think it ran its course probably before then even.  I do hope Jack Bauer gets a suitably dark ending.  I don't see how it could be otherwise with the events of the ...

AUTHOR EVENTS: Phobe Kitanidis's book launch.

Today I went to downtown Seattle for the launch of Phoebe Kitanidis's debut novel, WHISPER!  There were cookies and a contest, and Phoebe did a reading and fun Q&A afterward.

Here's a picture of Phoebe looking COMPLETELY FRICKEN ADORABLE:

Here's me looking crazy next to Phoebe:

And . . . I'm not sure what's going on here.  This appears to have been taken after she signed my copy of WHISPER.  Or else right after she signed the copy for the person who was in line in front of me:

Congratulations,...

Ideas and what other people think.

Yesterday, I had a late lunch/early dinner with Denise Jaden, author of the forthcoming YA novel LOSING FAITH.  It was very fun!  Denise and I talked for two hours straight.  I don't know about her, but I probably could have done another two hours easily!

One of the topics that came up is something to which I think most writers can relate on some level:  the experience of learning that another book out there has major similarities to yours.  I'm not talking about plagiarism or people stealing ...

MEMORY LANE: My teenage love notes #1

At my (private) high school, we had "Chapel" whenever the schedule dictated (once a month?  Once a week?  I don't remember right now).  In Chapel, there were lots of announcements and a prayer or two, I'm sure.  But twice a year, chapel was replaced with Week of Prayer during which, we had to be in the church for, like two hours every day for the whole week, during which guest speakers would give sermons and prayers and such.

Below are notes my friend Matt and I wrote to each other during...
