"Playing Pirate House" at The Nervous Breakdown.
I have an essay pubbed at The Nervous Breakdown.
An excerpt:
Maintaining a spirit of play as opposed to laboring under the "rules" of writing is a troublesome task. There is an entire industry to teach us the rules. Play, not so much. Inside the playfulness of writing we forge our connection to the reader. It's behind rules that distance is bred. I was reminded of this over the weekend. I was part of an audience at a gladiatorial arena, also known as a play-date...

BEATter late than never.
So I am finally getting around to posting about my BEA experience.
In short, it was thrilling. A bit like Disney World if Disney World were louder, more crowded and filled with even more people. It was a bit overwhelming to be honest. I passed out at one point and only woke when someone waved a galley under my nose.
The afternoon was thrilling because I got to sign my book for people who apparently want to read it:

I also got to see some familiar faces:

Did someone say Jeff Somers book giveaway?!

There will be blood (at my reading).
It appears that I will be reading from Numb on July 28th at Paper Cone Stories (held at Jack's Stir Brew, 138 West 10th Street, NYC). It also appears that I will be reading with Jeff Somers and Evan Mandery, which means that there will be blood, alcohol and sweet, sweet tears. More details as they emerge and I remember them.

I don't think I'll ever leave.
Sometimes I simply can't believe how lucky I am to live here.

Live Free or BEA Hard.
I don't recall hearing an engine rev, but apparently my agent, Dame Janet Reid, took a photo of me at BEA from a moving car.
The car must have slowed down for a moment or two, because Janet has other photos on her site. That she only allowed me to have this one tells you something.
Luckily, I am quite the master of late 19th and early 20th century computer technology, and so I was able to clean up the blurred photo she'd provided me. Details below.

Why I shut down my Facebook account.
Naturally, the indiscreet IM thread has ignited controversy. Some argue that Zuckerberg shouldn't be held accountable for something ...

Publisher's Weekly review of Numb.
Seems like they liked my book. Check it out here (the seventh review from the top). The only way I could be happier is if they included chicken wings.

BEA and mea.
It looks as if I will be at BEA this year, signing things that look like my book. I hope that if anyone interested in seeing me sweat profusely is there, they will drop by for a visit, a signature, and possibly even a feeding (I like chicken wings).
I'll be at table 7, on May 26, from 3 to 3:30.

What do I know? I'm just the author.
A great question in a comment to an earlier post, from Judith:
You say you write everyday, but you listen to your characters while you go about your daily life, right? So does that mean you like to listen to your characters first and get a clear sense of who they are, and then write, or you write right away even if the characters are still not fully developed? Basically, I guess I'm asking how soon you
start writing.
Essentially I start writing in order to find out who they are. I start with a...
