Win Numb and help women in Ghana.
I was thrilled when Candace Ganger asked if I might donate a prize for a fundraiser to benefit women in Ghana (funds will help with microloans, community improvement and education). I was happy to throw a copy of Numb (signed if you like) and a critique of up to 50 pages of your writing. You can read about how to enter the contest here.

How to get an author blurb (part 2 of 4).
Today I'll share another letter sent to an author in the hope that I might get a blurb. Asking for a blurb can feel like begging, but that's only because it is. Part 1 was Tuesday, and though I still haven't heard from Mr. Auster I think we should carry on. And so, part two...
Dear Mr. Pynchon,Would it be ungainly of me to say that you are my favorite writer?
I am writing to ask if you might be interested in reading (and possibly blurbing) my book, Numb. It will be published by...

July 28, 2010: reading at Paper Cone Stories
In only two short weeks I will be reading, along with Jeff Somers and Evan Mandery, at Paper Cone Stories (138 West 10th, Jack's Stir Brew in Manhattan) at 8PM. I will be reading from Numb, and it will even be available for purchase.
All are welcome.
Let the panic begin.

How to get an author blurb (Part 1 of 4).
One of the trickiest tasks of getting published is trolling for blurbs--those delightful, pithy, sometimes even useful little quotes that adorn a book's cover and let you know what another author thought of the book. Many wonder how an author goes about getting them. Well, for their edification, I herewith reveal the type of missive we send to those authors in the hopes of getting a blurb. The first I'll share is the letter I sent to Paul Auster. Read, and learn...

At The Nervous Breakdown: Dead, I Am.
I have a new essay up at The Nervous Breakdown: Dead, I Am.
An excerpt:
My son collects sticks. He thinks they are for his grandfather's fireplace. The fact that it is in the 100s and humid and the family would collectively strangle his grandfather if he tried to build a fire doesn't dissuade the collection at all. One might think that, being in Brooklyn, stick collecting might be difficult. One would be wrong. We live near a park that apparently has sticks flown in from all over the Tri-state...
